Essential workers in Lancaster County who are struggling with the emotional effects of COVID-19 may be eligible for a new program that provides three free sessions with a therapist. The program is funded by the Steinman Foundation and administered by Mental Health America of Lancaster County.
MHALC Presents CMAP During the COVID-19 shutdown, the Steinman Foundation wanted to respond to the needs of the community. One way the organization chose to do that was to focus on mental health, with a goal of making sure community residents felt supported in unprecedented times. The foundation reached out to Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to bring a Community Mental Health Assistance Plan (CMAP) to local workers. “They partnered with us because we had relationships with service providers and we’re able to support individuals beyond the project,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC. MHALC turned to Philhaven/WellSpan as a consultant. “WellSpan runs an Employee Assistance Program (EAP),” explained McDevitt, who added that the organization provided a lot of guidance
in the best way to execute the plan, especially emphasizing that less than a quarter of each patient’s session should be spent on paperwork. “We wanted it devoted to getting to the (patient’s) story,” said McDevitt. “We want people to feel comfortable and to walk away with some tools, skills, and ideas on how to move forward with the angst or fear that they have.” MHALC hired Caryn Thompson to be the project coordinator. In early May, she began researching the best way to implement the program, amassing a list of nearly 70 providers, which was reduced to 10 providers based on grant applications. The final list represents a variety, from groups to individuals, with providers that offer bilingual services, those who focus on seniors, one whose specialty is the Plain population, and more. “We wanted to make sure we (reached) everybody in the county,” Thompson said. By
early June, Thompson was holding online training sessions for the providers to let them know what was expected and to explain the documentation they needed to complete so that MHALC will have the demographic information needed to continue the program. McDevitt explained that the program is designed as an approach to the increase in anxiety, depression, and other fear-related behaviors associated with the shutdown. “We have seen an increase in police calls, and crisis outreach is starting to tick up now,” she said. Lancaster County residents who are in need of professional support may call MHALC at 717-397-7461 on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for an intake form. “You will talk to one of our navigators who will help you identify a therapist,” said McDevitt. Thompson will recommend a therapist, and CMAP will provide three free confidential

businesses and the community at large as we navigate the challenges and opportunities the current economic climate provides,” Price said. He added that he will eventually maintain regular hours at the Chamber’s office, but he is currently going into the community to meet Chamber members. Price holds a bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Cincinnati, where he graduated with honors. He is the founder of PennPrice Management Group. He and his wife, Marcia, reside in Elizabethtown. They have four grown children and five grandchildren.

Katlyn Lantz, development coordinator with ECHOS (Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services), has fond memories of the organization’s first fundraising banquet, called the One Community Many Neighbors Celebration, which was held in fall 2019. “We all gathered together to hear about ECHOS’ mission and vision,” she recalled, noting that past ECHOS clients spoke at the event. “This year, we had hoped to do the same,” continued Lantz, who noted that the COVID-19 pandemic served to change the organization’s plans. Instead, ECHOS is putting together a different type of appeal, titled “30 in 3.” “It’s a virtual fundraiser,” explained Lantz. “We are going to try to raise $30,000 in three days.” The fundraiser will kick off at 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and end at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24. Plans for the fundraiser include spotlight videos focusing on donors and clients and stakeholders in the community. According to Lantz, members of the ECHOS staff will provide Facebook updates including snippets of videos during the three-day event. Links to videos on ECHOS’ website will be posted there. In addition, an area of the website has been designated for the fundraiser. To locate the page, readers may visit https://echoslancaster.org and hover over the word “Give.” Three tabs will appear, and people should click on the one that says “30 in 3 Giving

It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. EPC has not been immune to the tough decisions that we’ve all had to make during this pandemic. With our highest priority being to maintain the best local news coverage, we have made some changes that you will begin to see starting this week. To that end, this community paper will be distributed to your household every two weeks, encompassing the entire coverage area. While you will not receive the printed edition each week, we

that in the organization’s past fiscal year, more than 800 individuals were helped. “We work with a family to help them holistically to address issues,” said Jones of the 2,000 work hours the team puts in yearly. “We look at the stability of housing, family dynamics. We teach soft skills, problem solving, and budgeting. This isn’t a Band Aid. It is helping (clients) to alleviate crisis in a way that will stimulate growth.” Lantz noted that the response to the 2019 banquet was positive and that organizers would love to see that momentum continue. “We’re hoping for the same kind of outcome we had from our celebration last year,” she said. “We will have a small celebration at the end of it to thank our community. We are really excited.” Readers who are interested in taking part in the fundraiser should search for ECHOS on Facebook. celebration from multiple internet sources. ECHOS provides a variety of services to the community from the Community Place on Washington (CPOW), a complex that is scheduled to break ground for an expansion on Friday, Sept. 11. ECHOS’ shelter, which has existed for five years, moved from a local church to the building, which was once a parochial school, in 2018. Need for the facility increased by 20% last year. The year before that it increased 70%. But the winter shelter is only the beginning of ECHOS’ services to the community. Deb Jones, executive director of ECHOS, explained that the organization oversees 13 additional programs that offer community social services integrated with services designed to prevent and alleviate poverty with a goal of empowering stability among families and individuals in the Elizabethtown and Donegal school districts. Jones noted that the ECHOS team of 16 works with 300 volunteers to help clients define and solve a crisis to go from surviving to thriving. “We have family and individual support programs, addiction prevention,” she said, adding
