Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society will host the 17th annual Apple Fall Festival on Sunday, Oct. 9, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will be held at the mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge.

Celebrate Fall At Haldeman Mansion Octoberfest Pirates Plunder.

“This is a very family-oriented day,” said Elaine Jackson, event chair. “There are lots of games for children to play, and you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Susquehanna River.”

Children’s festivities will include information about Johnny Appleseed, apple activities, a coloring station, Frisbee throwing, jumping rope and more.

Food options will include grilled bratwurst, hot dogs, homemade baked beans, applesauce, cider, soup, chips and a variety of apple desserts. “We always use Groff’s bratwurst,” Jackson noted. “The apples we use are donated by Masonic Villages.” Homemade baked goods will also be for sale.

The festival will feature a silent auction of items donated by local businesses. “We usually have mums and other fall flowers, donated by River Road Produce in Marietta,” Jackson remarked. “Nissley Vineyards gives us tickets to events, and M&M Mars always donates to our auction.”

Ahoy,

mateys! There be pirates in Elizabethtown. But don’t worry - these are friendly pirates. It’s all part of Octoberfest Pirates Plunder, which will take place on Sunday, Oct. 9, from 1 to 6 p.m. “If you are looking for an adventure, a fantasy-filled, familyfun outing, this is an event not to be missed,” said Amy McEvoy, a member of LIV-ETown, which is organizing the festivities.

The idea for the event combines a traditional Octoberfest celebration with some unexpected visitors.

“The theme is E-town was having an Octoberfest downtown when it was invaded by pirates looking for treasure and to recruit members into their pirate crew,” explained

For many cancer patients, the goal is to “ring the bell,” marking the end of treatment. As Kim Ramirez knows, however, survivors often incur extensive costs associated with after-cancer care. To remedy the problem, Ramirez formed Ta Ta Rebels Inc., a nonprofit that focuses on supporting breast-cancer survivors like herself. “We reached our five-year milestone last year,” Ramirez said of the organiz ation.

Boys’ Soccer Wins Six Straight, Now 7-2-1

The E-town boys’ soccer team found the cure for early season struggles - winning. After opening 1-2-1 the Bears have ripped off six straight wins and now sport a 7-2-1 mark.

The last three of those wins have all been by shutout and came over Cedar Crest, Solanco and LampeterStrasburg.

“Against Cedar Crest and Solanco, we displayed better defensive organization while continuing to score,” said head coach James Sostack. “We continue to work on composure on the ball and maintaining our team shape as we head into the second half of our schedule while recognizing that many section rivals raise their level of play when facing Etown.”

Against Cedar Crest it was the Tavon Schoenberger show with the senior collecting a first half hat trick. Jason Stark, Xavier Giron and Max Gerhart joined the action with assists. Tyler Bell needed one save to post the shutout.

One day later the Bears sent Solanco home with a 4-0 loss. Bell collected another one-save shutout while Stark collected two second half scores. Schoenberger and Noah Locke accounted for the two first half scores.

Shutout number three came on the 19th via a 3-0 final over Lampeter-Strasburg. Elizabethtown used second half scores from Dak Kelly and Giron to pull away. Schoenberger assisted Giron’s goal in the 72nd minute while Flory made it 1-0 with an unassisted score in the 29th minute.

TENNIS

The Lady Bear tennis team hit a bump in the schedule, resulting in losses to Hempfield and Lampeter-Strasburg.

“We knew going into the final two weeks of regular season that we were going to into the gauntlet of competition,” said head coach Brenda McBride, “Considering that this was projected to be our ‘rebuilding’ year we feel very excited about the season we’re having.”

The 7-0 loss to Hempfield took place on the 16th with a 5-2 setback

opposite Lampeter-Strasburg taking place on the 20th. E-town’s two wins against the Pioneers were split with Julia Laszakovits and Rebecca Mink winning at number two doubles while Dasha Gencturk picked up the singles win.

“Dasha had a very impressive win at #1 singles,” said McBride.

Against Garden Spot on the 14th, the Bears had little trouble leading to singles wins by Gencturk, Laszakovits, Mink and Kathryn Barraclough and doubles wins by Gencturk and Barraclough, Laszakovits and Mink as well as Calla Stolzfus and Noa Williams.

VOLLEYBALL

The girls’ volleyball team shook off their five-set setback to Ephrata on the 13th by sweeping Solanco and Lebanon to improve to 7-1 overall while picking up a silver medal at the Black Knight Invitational on the 17th.

The Lady Bears did not drop a set in pool play, topping CV, Governor Mifflin and Hunterdon Central (NJ) before taking out CD East in the semifinals. That set up a rematch of last year’s finals, but this time Etown was unable to slay the host squad, settling for second place.

Bookended around that silver medal were 3-0 sweeps over Solanco

and Lebanon. That action started on September 15th with 25-10, 25-17 and 25-9 wins over the Mares. Liz Kerin (12 kills, one block) and Halley Oller (22 assists, four aces) fronted the attack while Paige Horst chipped in with 16 digs.

Up next was a visit from Lebanon on the 20th with Elizabethtown collecting wins of 25-16, 25-3 and 2521. Oller finished with 13 assists, 11 digs and four more aces while Kerin had four kills and four blocks.

GOLF

The golf team wrapped up their regular season with a trip to Foxchase GC on the 14th. The Bears went 1-3 on the day to finish with a 7-13 mark. Jared Louie finished atop the scorecard with a round of 88 while both Aidan Blyler and Dylan Parise checked in one shot back.

CROSS COUNTRY

Cross-country began their postseason ramp-up with a trip to Big Spring HS on the 17th to partake in the Ben Bloser Invitational. Both squads posted top five team finishes and earned four top 30 medals which included Jordan DiRisio (15th), Alison Fink (27th), Jaycen Conrad (22nd) and Jackson Kay (29th).

GIRLS’ SOCCER

When you are hot, you are hot, and the E-town girls soccer team is

HOT. The Lady Bears, behind a fivegame winning streak, sport a 9-1 overall mark that has them knotted with Manheim Township for the most wins in the league.

Despite all that success, not everything has come easy, case in point would be a 3-2 win over Lampeter-Strasburg on the 19th where head coach Mark Brown cited a loss of focus as the driving force in needing a come from behind win.

“We showed a lot of character in sticking with it right to the end,” said Brown, “My girls have a belief that they are never beaten and showed a lot of character in ‘sticking with it’ at a tough venue and not playing to the level we can play.”

E-town opened a 1-0 lead on a Lily Heistand goal. L-S battled to go up 2-1, holding that lead until the 78th minute when Dani Bruno knotted the game. Less than a minute later Bruno found Heistand who took care of the rest to secure the 3-2 win.

“A lot of credit goes to L-S,” said Brown, “They made it very difficult for us. From a coaching standpoint to get the win and not play as well as we can is a positive sign moving forward.”

Elizabethtown had an easier time dispatching Solanco thanks to a Jena Witters hat trick. Ava Glick tacked on a final first half score and Keegan Miller turned away three shots to secure the 4-2 win.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team defeated Donegal and Lampeter-Strasburg to improve to 7-2.

The Bears blanked Donegal, 4-0, on the 15th with Mikaela Condran picking up three of the four scores.

Caitlin Steffie got things going with her second quarter score and Sydney Pope finished with five saves.

E-town nearly made it back-toback shutouts but settled for a 4-1 win over L-S on the 20th. Pope needed eight saves to secure the win while Reagan Flory led the offense with two goals and an assist. Steffie and Condran picked up one score each.

Live bluegrass music will be performed by South Mountain, and Ryan “The Bug Man” Bridge will present an educational program about insects. Darl Williams will serve fresh-pressed apple cider from his antique cider press.

Proceeds from the Apple Fall Festival will go toward the preservation and restoration of the mansion, which was the home of Samuel Haldeman, a renowned 19th-century naturalist. Currently, the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society is working to

restore mantels above the fireplaces located inside the mansion.

Jackson said anyone attending the Apple Fall Festival may bring a lawn chair to sit and enjoy the music, the food and the river views. “You can come for just an hour, or you can stay all afternoon,” she commented. “It’s just a nice time to get together with friends before the cold weather sets in. It’s a chance to enjoy the outdoors, and it’s a beautiful time of year to be on the grounds of the mansion.”

Encore! To Stage “12 Angry Jurors”

The community is invited to attend the latest performance by Encore! Homeschool Productions, a central Pennsylvania Christian homeschool theater troupe. The group will stage the courtroom drama “12 Angry Jurors” on Friday, Sept. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Hershey Area Playhouse, 630 Cherry Drive, Hershey.

The play focuses on 12 jury members who must decide

whether a 19-year-old man is guilty of murder. Eleven jurors initially vote that the man is guilty of the crime and then try to convince the one holdout to change his vote.

For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.face book.com/encorehomeschool productions or www.encore hsp.org. Tickets will also be available at the door. Small concessions will be available during the performances.

It has been a long time since the Elizabethtown football team saw 4-0 next to their name but after a 34-17 dismantling of Red Lion on the 16th that is no longer the case. E-town used 125 rushing yards and three scores from Logan Lentz coupled with 292 passing yards and a score from Josh Rudy to score in all four quarters, turning a 13-10 halftime score into the 34-17 final. Braden Cummings hauled in Rudy’s TD pass, finishing with 125 yards on three catches but it was Brady Breault that topped the receiving chart with 163 yards on six catches.

Tony Gibble, owner of The Tatted Toy Guys and a member of LIVETown. “Everyone from kids to adults are able to join the pirate crew by embarking on a journey downtown through local businesses collecting their pirate attire. This activity is free to all participants.”

Events will take place throughout the downtown area, said Abby Huber, owner of Charlamay’s Trinkets and Treasures and a member of LIVETown. “The basic footprint is from Rita’s on Market Street through the downtown square to the St. Peter’s Church parking lot,” she noted.

As Clint Gibble, owner of The Candy Unicornium and LIV-ETown member explained, Octoberfest Pirates Plunder will feature food truck vendors in the church parking lot, a pirate band, a stilt-walking pirate, scavenger hunts, treasure hunts and street performers. A pirate encampment will offer people the chance to fight a pirate, and people can meet mermaids at Mermaids Cove, he said. “My Town E-Town Sticker Books will have several stickers to collect at this event,” Clint remarked, adding, “The sticker book is a fun throwback to the ’80s sticker book collecting. Sticker books are … a fundraiser for LIV-ETown events.”

Tony explained that the idea for the pirate event came last year when the

LIV-ETown team was brainstorming a family-friendly Octoberfest celebration. Clint and Tony met a local family, Keith and Sue Mapplebeck, who, along with their son, Joseph, are pirate impersonators. Keith is also known as Doc Pyrate-Surgeon and offers community story times, which he will do at the Pirates Plunder.

The pirate event is just one of numerous community festivities organized throughout the year by LIVETown. “LIV-ETown, which stands for Local, Interactive, Vitality, strives to create a memorable interactive environment where participants become part of the fun,” Tony stated. On Friday, Oct. 14, LIV-ETown will host a “Hocus Pocus”-themed Second Friday throughout downtown Elizabethtown. “It is themed to the popular movie ‘Hocus Pocus,’” said Clint. “We will be featuring our very own Sanderson sisters as well as Billy and an interactive scavenger hunt with a mini trick-or-treat for candy by Mars Wrigley. Local Boy Scout Troop 51 and Pack 85 will be helping pass out the candy.” He added that events like the Pirates Plunder would not be possible without the support of local businesses and the American Legion Post 329, which is the major sponsor. For more information, search for “LIV_ETown” on Facebook.

“That in itself confirms that what we do is very much needed in the survivor community. Once you ring that bell, you are no longer eligible for resources received during treatment. The ongoing cost of follow-up scans, durable medical equipment (DME) and therapies continues well after ringing the bell.”

To help raise funds for the cause, the nonprofit will hold the sixth annual Survivors Raise Hope event. The fundraiser will include a motorcycle ride from the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., to the Middletown Anglers and Hunters, 1350 Schoolhouse Road. It will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. The ride will kick off at 11:15 a.m., followed by festivities at the Middletown location beginning at noon.

“There will be breakfast sandwiches, coffee and soda available during registration,” Ramirez stated. “The Elizabethtown Fire Police will assist our ride out of town and again at Cloverleaf and Route 230. The Linglestown Legion Riders will escort the ride to ensure a safe ride.”

Participation in the ride is not required to attend the event held in

the outside pavilion at the Middletown Anglers and Hunters. “We will have pulled pork sandwiches provided by One Love Café, chips provided by Martin’s Snacks, cookies from the Mount Joy Sheetz, macaroni salad provided by Mount Joy Weis Markets, Turkey Hill teas, water and, of course, the famous chicken corn soup made by one of our volunteers, Linda Geib,” Ramirez remarked. The event will also feature a variety of giveaways, bingo, a bean bag toss and merchandise available for purchase.

Three speakers will be featured at the event. “This year’s discussion will cover the choices/options given after a breast cancer diagnosis,” Ramirez said. “Barbara Fox from Confidence Inked will discuss how to camouflage the surgery scar. Bridget Grant from Inkcredible Outcomes will discuss the

options of areola tattooing after reconstruction. Jennifer Krein is a breast cancer survivor that will share her breast cancer journey with everyone. These discussions are to raise survivorship awareness as we are the rest of the story.”

The Survivors Raise Hope event is the organization’s biggest annual fundraiser, and proceeds will help breast cancer survivors with ongoing out-of-pocket medical expenses, Ramirez noted. “This helps with copays, deductibles, DME such as prosthesis, mastectomy bras and compression sleeves,” she said. “We also provide a scar tissue therapy that helps with regaining your range of motion after surgery.”

Blues And Brews In Marietta

If you’ve got the blues, bring them to Marietta on Saturday, Oct. 8, and you’ll be in good company. That’s the date of the Marietta Blues and Brews Street Festival, featuring live entertainment, food and vendors. The event will run from 1 to 6 p.m.

The festival will be held along Front

Activities

Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will offer special events. Programs are open to the public, but preregistration is required by contacting 717-964-3808 or governordick@hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number. Attendees should meet at the Environmental Center.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, the Humpty Dumpty Hike will step off at 11 a.m. Participants will gather all the pieces of Humpty scattered along the trail and put him back together while learning about the forest. A fee applies.

The Music on the Porch bluegrass jam will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. Pickers are welcome to attend.

Street in Marietta, between McCleary’s Public House, located at 130 W. Front St., and River Trail Brewing, located at 40 E. Front St. Live music will be featured on outdoor stages at both locations, said Dodd Gross, entertainment director of McCleary’s.

“Pre-COVID, Marietta bar venues had two pub crawls a year,” Gross stated. As Craig Trissler, owner of River Trail Brewing, explained, “We had a meeting with other restaurant owners to discuss events that would help bring people to the area, and we decided to try music festivals to replace the pub crawls.” The first event, the Marietta Music and Beer

Fest, was held in July. The Blues and Brews Street Festival will operate in much the same way, Gross said. “We set up our street stage in the middle of the street with two bands,” he recalled. “So, we’re going to do it again at the Blues and Brews.”

At McCleary’s, Moe Blues will perform from 1 to 3 p.m. Gross described the group as “an awesome traditional harmonica-driven blues band from Lancaster.” From 4 to 6 p.m., Six Whiskey Revival will entertain. “They perform hard-driving blues and rock,” Gross remarked. After the official festival concludes, Little Buddy Blues Band Sharing And Caring (NSAC) is designed to minister to women in the community. Each meeting begins with a light snack, song, devotions, prayer and ends with a message. This year’s theme is “Created”. We will feature a variety of speakers along with one “how to create” freezer meal class. programs. Babysitting is all preschool

You’re invited to a fall benefit banquet for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community. The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and a catered meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meal will be prepared by Peters’ BBQ of Manheim, The Country Store of Mount Joy and Amy’s Mixing Bowl of Manheim. The menu will feature homemade ovenbaked stuffed chicken breasts with a mashed potato filling, chicken gravy, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans with bacon, salad, homemade soft dinner rolls with butter, and assorted desserts and drinks.

Following the meal, a program will take place with guest speakers, personal sharing and special music. This year, a new banquet feature will be themed baskets and experiences to bid

on. Basket themes will include Paws & Claws - Pet Lovers Basket, Italian Amore Basket, Sweet Treats & Sugar Baked Basket, PA Dutch Basket, Spanish Fiesta Basket, Hunter’s Necessity Basket, Spa Basket, Outdoors Basket and Coffee Lovers Basket. Larger items will include a new wood-burning outdoor fire pit, passes to local entertainment venues and attractions and a sterling silver Charles Krypell pearl filigree bead necklace. Additionally, the fundraiser will include an option to bid on catered meals that will be offered in homes of those with a personal connection to Mt. Hope.

Proceeds from the banquet will help Mt. Hope continue providing care to seniors regardless of their ability to pay. “The mission of Mt. Hope will be shared, and attendees will also hear personal stories of how Mt. Hope touched people’s lives when they needed answers and provided a way to help families in need,”

Mt. Hope

said Kris Wilson, director of advancement, noting that the banquet will mark the first time a large group of Mt. Hope supporters has been together in person since June of 2019. “People attending the banquet will be simply amazed at everything Mt. Hope accomplished since the summer of 2019,” she stated. “I love the stories, and by sharing our stories, you realize you are not alone on the pathways of life, and you can see how unique and what a special niche Mt. Hope fills in our area.”

Located in Manheim, Mt. Hope provides skilled nursing and rehabilitative care in a 50-bed facility for lower-income seniors and people with disabilities. “Mt. Hope gives over $1 million in charitable care every year, a feat made possible by the great amount of support from our local community,” Wilson noted.

“Raising funds to assist in helping residents who are not able to afford the cost of their care or benevolent care is a growing need.”

To make a reservation for the banquet, contact Wilson at 717682-8026 or email advance ment@mthopenazarene.org. Opportunities for event or table sponsorships are available for a donation. The cost to attend the banquet is free for individuals, with the opportunity to contribute financially at the event. The deadline to make reservations is Saturday, Oct. 15.
