LCCTC Students Construct Pole Barn S tudents from the Mount Joy

campus of the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) recently had an opportunity to take part in a hands-on learning project by constructing a storage pole barn for Donegal Youth Soccer. About 15 students in the Introduction to Construction Careers program, wearing blue safety helmets and masks, constructed the large storage shed in an area located adjacent to the soccer field in Cove Outlook Park on Old Market Street. The project was meant to be done in the spring, but the pandemic shutdown hit before construction could begin. The students were supervised by their instructor, Aaron Adams. “The students in this class are here to learn the basic skills of a variety of construction careers. So a project like this one with a variety of necessary skills is absolutely perfect for them,” Adams said, noting that the location

of the site, which is situated across the street from the Mount Joy campus, was also ideal for the students. The LCCTC occasionally works with local groups to provide labor for construction and improvement projects. “The students get on-site work experience, and we are able to save some local organizations some expenses,” Adams said. Adams explained to the students how to install structural timbers, and the students were responsible for making measurements, sawing boards to length and screwing the struts in place. Gage Watt, an LCCTC junior from Manheim Central High School, made a straight chalk line to mark positions for the coming cut lumber. He said that he was hoping to become a local construction worker after high school. “I came to the (LCCTC) for the hands-on learning and here we are,” Gage said, holding up a construction tape measure. Price Named EACC Director The Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce (EACC) welcomed Robert Price as its new executive director, effective Sept. 1. Price came to EACC from the Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, where he served as executive director. His more than 40 years of varied experience also includes serving as the membership services director for the Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Harrisburg, executive director of U.S. Green Building Council - Central Pennsylvania Chapter, and founding executive director of the Downtown State College Partnership. “The (EACC) board of directors was impressed by Bob’s extensive experience in leadership, membership services, program and event development, strategic planning, marketing and fundraising, as well as his enthusiasm for helping our member businesses and the local community succeed,” noted Tina Lutter, president of EACC’s board of directors. “We are confident he has the skills to lead our Chamber and provide continued value to our members.”

Beautiful weather typically coincides with an increase of bicyclists on the roads. For some riders, cycling is a form of transportation. For others, it is a mode of relaxation and recreation. For everyone, however, safety is paramount. Lancaster Bicycle Club safety director John Mullineaux listed two overarching principles for safe riding: wear a helmet and behave like a vehicle.

Bears Billy McNitt (74) and Timothy Davis team up to drop Solanco’s Elijah Cunningham for a loss during E-town’s 29-22 loss to the host Mules last Friday.

For the football faithful in Elizabethtown, that meant a date with YouTube on the 25th to watch the Bears tangle with Solanco. E-town entered the week two affair in Quarryville looking to build on their early season momentum that came via a 42-6 shellacking over McCaskey in the September 18th season opener. Despite the best efforts of their junior QB, Patrick Gilhool, the Bears fell to 1-1 on the year after a 29-22 setback to the Golden Mules. Gilhool accounted for 238 of Elizabethtown’s 327 yards and played a part of two of their three touchdowns. The first of which was a 36 yard strike to Elijah Reitmeyer that put the Bears up early. Solanco enjoyed the next three scores, building a 21-7 lead as the game headed towards intermission. Gilhool, who finished with 194 yards in the air, picked up his second TD of the game on a 17-yard scamper that was capped by a successful twopoint try that made it 21-15. The game remained a six-point affair until Riley Drager’s four-yard scamper (nine carries, 28 yards) early in the fourth. Caiden Herr’s second PAT conversion

gave the Bears a slim 22-21 lead that held until the Golden Mules completed their lone pass of the contest, a rainbow from Mason St. Clair to Ronnie Fulton up the middle that covered 45 yards and moved the home team on top 27-22. Fulton capped the scoring with a two-point conversion while teammate Elijah Cunningham sealed things with an interception on Etown’s ensuing possession. Brandonn Frey was Gilhool’s favorite target with four receptions totaling 53 yards while Logan Lentz added 53 yards on the ground to his 28 receiving yards. Braxton Cicero added 61 yards on two catches with Reitmeyer’s lone snag being the game opening score. CROSS COUNTRY Elizabethtown’s cross-country teams kicked off their season on September 24th taking a trip to Neffsville to battle McCaskey and the host Blue Streaks. The Bears returned home winless on the day with both sides going 0-2. The Lady Bears posted nearly identical losses, falling to McCaskey 21-37 and Township 22-38 while the boy’s dropped a 17-41 final to the Red Tornado and a 15-48 final to the Blue Streaks. Madeline Quinn collected the top spot for Etown, finishing second where her 18:55 was just 10 seconds off the winning pace on the girl’s side. Jordan DiRisio’s time of 20:22 was good enough to slip inside the top 10, putting the sophomore ninth on the day. Nathan Johnson gave the boy’s their best hope for a top 10 finish but his 18:04 put the Photo by Mona Steinhauer

Teammate Garrick English was the next runner to finish, taking 12th with a time of 18:12. GOLF Despite the late start to the season the golf team has nearly completed their 2020 season. The Bears worked their way through the regular season posting an 18-5 mark, good enough for second place in Section Two behind only Garden Spot and their 221 record. Five Bears kicked off the postseason on September 21st with a trip to Meadia Heights for the LancasterLebanon League Championship. Of those five only one, Alex Williams, played well enough to advance to the District 3 Championship on October 9th. Williams needed 81 strokes to work his way around the par 71 course which was right on his season average and good enough to place the senior in a seven-way tie for fifth on the day. Weston Kolaric posted a round of 94 to finish 10 shots outside the district cut while Jolene Markley

missed the girl’s cut by six strokes after posting a round of 105. VOLLEYBALL Looking to build off last year’s district qualifying run, the girls’ volleyball team kicked off their 2020 season with a 3-0 win over Solanco on the 24th. Sydney Stewart and Kallee Locker led the way in the 25-7, 25-11 and 25-10 win, splitting 16 kills down the middle. Stewart added one block and Locker four digs. Liz Kern matched Stewart’s single block while Angela CostaQuimet led the team with three aces. FIELD HOCKEY The 2020 season has not started the way the field hockey team would prefer. The Lady Bears find themselves 0-2 after season opening losses to Ephrata and Cocalico. The Lady Mounts accounted for the bulk of E-town’s 8-1 scoring deficit thanks to their 6-1 season opening win on Sept 24th. Sophie Brinkman setup Mikaela Condran for Elizabethtown’s lone score while Alaina Telenko recorded 21 saves in goal for the Lady Bears. E-town also had five defensive saves with Evynn Reider tallying two of those. Elizabethtown’s trip to Denver on September 26th resulted in a 2-0 Cocalico win. TENNIS With just one regular season match remaining, the Lady Bears’ tennis team is sporting a 5-2 mark with both losses coming to the two squads above them in the Section Two standings, Manheim Central and LampeterStrasburg. E-town dropped their September 14th showdown with L-S by a 5-2 final with Central handing the Lady Bears a 6-1 setback on the 18th. In between the two losses was a 7-0 victory over Garden Spot and, when combined with a 5-2 season opening win over Solanco, had Elizabethtown 2-2 at the midway point of the season. The Lady Bears responded to the Central loss by ripping off three straight wins starting with a 4-3 win over Cocalico on the 21st. Elizabethtown followed by topping Warwick 61 on September 23rd and sweeping Donegal 7-0 on the 25th. The Lady Bears finish up their regular season on September 28th when they host Lebanon.

the barn. “It’s really cool to know that you’re building something that is going to be here for a long time - something that a lot of people will use over the years,” Javan said. Brian Engle, the fields coordinator from Donegal Youth Soccer, explained that the new shed will house all the materials that the group uses during meets such as jerseys, line equipment and goals. “The LCCTC had built a small shed for us on the same location. Over the years, we outgrew that shed and then some,” Engle said. “I really look forward to having a large, secure place to store our material, and we really appreciate all of the work from the (LCCTC) students.”

Total Exterminating Services (TES), a pest control company serving Lancaster and York counties, has moved within Columbia to 272 Locust St. Owner Steve Shetter stated that the new location is more visible and provides room for the company’s continued growth. TES was founded in Columbia in 2016 and has expanded from one technician to five and added a full-time office manager. The growth is due to several factors, Shetter said, adding, “Even though we are a fairly young company, we have over 75 years’ combined experience. Also, being local gives us advantages.” Shetter noted that diversity of services is another reason for the company’s rapid Total Exterminating Services employees (from left) growth. TES is able to provide solutions for Jose Vellon, owner Steve Shetter, Kathie Slenker, any pest control needs for both residential Mike Hughson, and Zachary Lape work out of the and commercial customers. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) requires anyone under the age of 12 to wear a helmet, whether they are operating the bicycle or participating as a passenger on a bike or a bike-pulled trailer. PennDOT does not mandate helmets for riders age 12 and older, but it strongly recommends that everyone wears a helmet. Mullineaux agreed, saying, “Wear a helmet. They do help an enormous amount. I’m 70 years old, and I wear a helmet every time I ride.” Although helmets are regulated for children, the age at which youngsters may ride on the road is not. Instead, that privilege depends on the training and the skill level of the individual rider. Some area school districts provide education to middle-grade students to encourage them to ride bicycles to school. Regardless of age, behaving like a vehicle while riding a bicycle might not be intuitive, but it is worth practicing.

According to Mullineaux, in Pennsylvania, cyclists have the right to ride wherever they think it is safe to do so, with the exclusion of riding against traffic. “Always ride with traffic. Always,” Mullineaux stressed. Pedestrians walk against traffic because they can quickly move to the side of the road when encountering oncoming vehicles. “If you’re riding a bicycle, you don’t have time to get over when you see a car coming toward you,” Mullineaux said. When Mullineaux learned to ride on the road, he was taught to put his wheels on the white fog line or stay as far to the edge of the road surface in the absence of the line. However, he later learned that doing so makes cyclists less visible to automobile drivers, it makes it tempting for drivers to try to squeeze by a bicycle, and there is nowhere to go if an animal runs in front of the bike or the road contains an obstacle. “I like the shoulder, but if you don’t

have a shoulder to ride on, the next safest place is to have your wheels in the same place as the right-hand tires of an automobile,” Mullineaux said. “(That way), in order for them to pass you, they must do a clean pass.” Mullineaux related that he once encountered a person at a safety presentation who was upset that cyclists were taking up part of a lane while ascending a hill. He asked the individual how they would have behaved if the cyclist had instead been a piece of heavy equipment, emphasizing that it is important to give cyclists the same respect. On one-way streets, Mullineaux regularly rides in the middle of a lane because vehicles can safely pass him in the adjacent lane. For single-lane roundabouts, which have been slowly cropping up in Lancaster County, cyclists should take the lane. Motorists may have to spend a few extra seconds getting through the roundabout, but it is worth it to ensure everyone’s safety. To make left-hand turns on a two-way street, Mullineaux said that he gets close to the double yellow lines as soon as it is safe to do so and signals a turn. “If a car comes up behind me (and also plans to turn), they have to wait for me,” he remarked. Bicycle lanes are a prominent feature on some Lancaster city streets. On Walnut Street, most of the bike lane is against the sidewalk and protected from the left lane of traffic by a row of parking spaces. Anyone seated on the left side of parked vehicles must look to the lane behind their vehicle to ensure they do not open their doors into a cyclist’s path. Mullineaux shared that driver’s education courses are now teaching the Dutch Reach to open doors. Popularized by the Netherlands, where bicycles outnumber residents, the Dutch Reach is so named because a seated individual crosses their body with their opposite hand to open their car door. Doing so turns the individual’s body so it is more likely they see the lane toward the rear of the vehicle and thus spot any approaching cyclists. On rural routes, cyclists may encounter horse-drawn carriages. Bicycles are almost always faster, although Mullineaux said he has been known to draft behind a buggy in the presence of a tailwind. To safely pass a horse-drawn vehicle, cyclists may ride close to the center line, making sure no drivers are coming toward them. Then, once they are well past the horse, riders may return to their original position on the road. “I sometimes wave (when passing), especially if there are kids in the back,” Mullineaux said. He offered a word of caution about sharing the road with horsedrawn conveyances, noting, “If you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to come upon a buggy unawares.” The Lancaster Bicycle Club offers educational resources and training on bike safety. Interested individuals may visit https://lancasterbikeclub.net/, click on the About tab and select “Safety Tips” and “Smart Cycling.”
