A Social Enterprise With Single Moms In Mind By Chelsea Peifer
Candace Abel started making her own soaps and lotions when she was on a quest to find healthier products to use for her youngest son, who has a critical form of a blood disorder known as thalassemia, which requires intensive medication and gene therapy for survival. “I thought, ‘If we can put better things on the table, then we can put better things on our bodies, too,’” recalled Candace. Candace’s use of goat’s milk and oils to create soaps and lotions with an artistic flair caught the attention of family and friends, who asked her to make the products for them to use and then placed even more orders for things like party and wedding favors. In 2018, Candace decided to turn her hobby into something more and established Girl Crush Company as a limited liability company (LLC).
Girl Crush Company is a member of the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild and uses organic, responsibly sourced oils and goat’s milk or honey from local suppliers. The products, which range from eye-catching unicorn swirled soaps to whimsical hand soaps with scents like heirloom tomato and oatmeal and honey, contain ethically sourced colors and fragrances. Using responsibly and ethically sourced ingredients is important to Candace, as it means no animal testing and no child labor have played a role in any of the products, which are all made in Girl Crush Company’s soap studio in Mount Joy. Now Girl Crush Company is in the process of becoming a social enterprise in order to use its profits to educate, employ, and empower at-risk single mothers in the local area. “The goal is much bigger than creating soaps,” Candace emphasized. “We want to make See Girl Crush Company pg 3

When volunteering with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Lancaster County, a nonprofit organization that allows trained community members to be appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in foster care, Candace could not stop thinking about the lack of support the single moms had in and out of the courtroom. After many conversations lamenting the need for more resources for single moms, someone challenged Candace to do something about it - and now she is. “What I’d like to offer these women is the assurance they are not alone,” said Candace. The company is a reflection of Candace’s heart for helping others something she is no stranger to doing. She founded Elizabethtown-based

Elizabethtown Area School District held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 24 for its recently installed solar field. The solar field, located between the Bear Creek School and East High Street, is part of a comprehensive approach by the district to improve efficiencies and repurpose operational expenses toward its educational programs. In total, approximately 40 community members and representatives from the school district attended the ceremony. As part of the Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) of 2016, the district partnered with McClure Company in 2017 to become more energy efficient. Updates to light fixtures, HVAC settings, and the buildings themselves have been underway for the past 18 months and will generate approximately $4 million in energy savings over the next 20 years. In addition, the school directors approved the installation of the solar field under the GESA, which will bring in an additional $2 million in energy savings during the same time period. The 500 kW solar field consists of 2,000 panels and has a life expectancy of 40 years. It will generate 640,000 kW of energy per year or enough to power 59 homes and

Veteran, Rescuers On Sept. 5, a 74-year-old local veteran suffered sudden cardiac arrest when he collapsed and fell to the floor at Giant Food Store in Mount Joy. Three bystanders helped to save his life as they immediately called 9-1-1, checked his pulse, started chest compressions, and retrieved the automated external defibrillator (AED) that was recently installed at the Giant Food location. A police officer from Mount Joy Borough arrived on the scene and took over chest compressions, and a firefighter from Mount Joy Borough assisted with the veteran’s breathing. Susquehanna Valley EMS started Advanced Life Support care, which included injecting IV heart rhythm medication and attaching him to a heart monitor, which transmitted the data to the hospital so the hospital could be prepared for his arrival. After 10 minutes and four different shocks to the veteran’s heart, the man awoke and was rapidly transported to the hospital. Mike Fitzgibbons, Chief of Susquehanna Valley EMS, attributed the successful outcome to the teamwork involved, from bystanders’ immediate actions to the availability of the AED. To celebrate the veteran’s life and to honor those who saved him, a Cardiac Arrest Save Ceremony will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. at Giant Food Store, 789 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The community is invited. The survivor, bystanders, paramedics, police, and firefighters will be available to answer questions. During this ceremony, the survivor will donate an AED to the Mount Joy VFW.

Garden Spot outplayed us in the first set, but in the second we started to gain some momentum and really came out firing in the third,” said Griest. “We finally woke up and started to play E-town volleyball we were able to grind out a win in the fourth set to push the match to a fifth.” The wins that Griest spoke of were 25-20 and 25-22 finals that made it a 2-2 affair. I know it will come very soon.” The fist loss came on the 24th by a 1-0 final with Donegal picking up the win thanks to a Kiera Baughman score late in the opening half. Alaina Telenko turned away the remaining eight shots she faced to keep things close. Two days later, Lampeter-Strasburg claimed a 3-2 win. The loss might have dropped E-town to 4-8 on the year but can still be classified as a good loss as the last time the two sides clashed the Lady Pioneers posted a seven-goal victory. Lampeter-Strasburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead just past the midway point of the opening half. It was there that Alaina Telenko (six saves) and the Lady Bear defense found their footing, keeping the damage to just three scores. Charger Volleyball Snags 10th Win of the Season by Leah Sintic
It might have been a short week for Lady Charger’s volleyball, but they made the most of it, picking up their tenth win of the season and boosting their overall record to an impressive 10-0. Tuesday’s Sept. 24 home match pitted the MC club against Dayspring Christian Academy, and the Chargers rose to a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-21, 25-18). Taking game one by a large margin (25-14), it looked as if it might be a quick victory for the MC squad, but Dayspring rebounded for tighter competition in the subsequent two games. Long volleys characterized set two and, after a few errors, the Chargers found themselves having to regroup to maintain control. “The girls had stopped communicating and when we stop communicating there is a tendency to disengage,” explained head coach Kate Ferrari. Capitalizing on those uncharacteristic MC errors, Dayspring saw an opening and came out with increased intensity in the third set, holding their first of lead of the contest, staying with Mount Calvary point-for-point, and at one point inching ahead to an 11-8 advantage. “We told the girls they needed to talk on the court. We also knew we needed to have faster transition in the game,” added Ferrari. Making those few adjustments made all the difference, and the Chargers started to regain control of the match.
Kara Locker had an all-around strong game for the Chargers and stepped up to the helm, serving until the squad regained the lead, 12-11. After a quick Dayspring point, the Chargers sided out to regain the serve, and Grace Hilsher took the team on a bit of a run, edging MC ahead 16-12, and sparking the momentum needed to close out the game and match. Locker’s efforts accumulated 10 kills, 12 assists, and 4 aces. Brie Lehman supplied a block, and sophomore Kacy Robinson gave the squad a defensive boost with 9 digs. GOLF The golf team’s last match of the regular season took place at Highlands of Donegal course on September 20th against Schuylkill Valley and, though the match was close, the club came up just short of a win. Schuylkill pulled ahead in the nine-hole match registering a 198 team score, compared to MC’s 222. Mount Calvary senior Danny Smullen paced the squad all season, and the final match was no exception, with Smullen carding a 46. “It was great to see Danny Smullen be the low-score at the match,” praised head coach Matt Owlett of the team’s lone senior. “Danny has been our MVP this year, so to see him do well in his last regular season match ever was encouraging.” Luke Turner (56), Hunter Stewart (59), and Hayden Merrick (61) rounded out the top four for Mount Calvary. Though the team was unable to nail down a collective win over the course of the season, continued growth and team-building remained at the forefront of their efforts. “Unfortunately, it didn’t translate into a team win, but hopefully it builds momentum,” encouraged Owlett. All season the team has been focusing on the Mount Calvary School theme of Passionately Pursing an Excellent Knowledge of Christ, a pursuit that the school hopes to instill into students in every aspect of life from academics to athletics and everything in between. For how that looks on a golf team, Coach Owlett elaborated. “Golf is a game that will often push you to the limit of your self-control. In those struggles, we can catch a tiny glimpse of Christ’s struggles through His human experiences. We want to use the game of golf to understand Christ, ourselves, and others.” GIRLS’ SOCCER Injuries have plagued the Lady Charger’s short roster all season, and while they hope to be at full strength soon,

playing games without substitutions and juggling injury restrictions has taken a toll on the club. Their tumultuous week displayed two lopsided contests in which they blanked Christian School of York 4-0, before being on the receiving end of a 5-0 shutout from West Shore Christian. On Thursday, the Chargers fell behind West Shore early in the contest, and found themselves trailing 4-0 at the break. Despite the deficit, the team rallied to hold the Bobcats to only one second half goal. MC keeper Marlie Neidwick defended against a barrage of 21 shots from the Bobcat attack, including facing two PKs, and came up with an impressive 16 saves. “Marlie did terrific in goal,” head coach Schmitkons said of the sophomore. “It’s not easy to get pounded with shots. She didn’t let it phase her, just moved on to the next play, and gave her best effort.” Tuesday’s home field matchup against Christian School of York also displayed a Mount Calvary squad playing without their lead scorer and without substitutions, yet despite the setbacks the club still managed to pull out a 4-0 triumph. “I think it was confidence building to see that we were able to still create many good scoring opportunities,” praised Schmitkons. Speaking to the need for multiple players to step up, the fact that all four Charger goals came from different players said volumes about the team’s willingness to diversify their attack and create openings for each other. Defensive player Olivia Yordy was first to strike, using speed and footwork to work her way from one end of the field to the other to be an offensive threat, yet still get back on defense. Breanna Winters, a freshman, showed aggression on the offensive end following up on several second chance opportunities, and was rewarded with her own opportunity to score just before the half, redirecting a cross from Naomi Ewing. Thirteen minutes into the second half, Ewing maneuvered her way through midfield traffic, breaking free of the CSY defense within the 18, and tucked the third Charger goal into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Chargers up 3-0. The squad broke the goal line for the fourth and final time with 11 minutes left in regulation. Taegan Akers worked her way down the right side of the field, drawing out the Crusader defender before placing a cross right in front of the goal for freshman Addalei Shenk to knock into the net. “We wanted the girls to be persistent in creating opportunities to score, and defending quickly once the ball was lost,” added Schmitkons. “They did that well, earned a strong win, and maybe built a little more confidence too.” BOYS’ SOCCER Boys’ soccer found themselves on both ends of a 2-1 scoreboard last week, picking up an early week win over New Covenant Christian, and falling to Harrisburg Christian two days later by the same score. Both contests were on the road for the Charger squad, and the week wrapped up on Thursday at Harrisburg Christian in a double overtime loss. Neither team broke the goal line in the first half. The Harrisburg Knights were the first to strike, netting a goal midway through the second half. Opportunities dwindled along with the clock, but one minute before regulation expired, freshman Brandon

Zeager stepped up in a big way for the MC club, knocking in a goal and propelling the contest into extended minutes. Unfortunately, the Knights tallied the game-winner during the second overtime putting a halt to the Charger comeback efforts. On Tuesday’s trip to New Covenant, it was the Chargers who ended up ahead in the 2-1 count. Sam Robinson opened scoring with a goal 13 minutes in, but the Flames had the answer with the equalizer just six minutes later. Once again, a freshman stepped up to make a gamechanging move for Mount Calvary. Seven minutes before time expired, a go-ahead goal from Brett Taylor turned out to be the determining point, with junior Damian Rutt providing the assist on both Charger goals. This week the Chargers expect a three-game week that has potential to boost their standings in CCAC rankings and holds post-season ramifications.
