UCEA Breaks Ground At CPOW BY ANN MEAD ASH

D

eb Jones, executive director of ECHOS (Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services), knows that many Elizabethtown and Mount Joy area residents have been waiting for the groundbreaking that occurred at 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, on Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. “It was a longtime dream of community members to have a social services agency here in Elizabethtown,” said Jones. “It was decades.” That dream began to come to fruition in 2018 when United Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) secured the Washington Street property, now known as Community Place on Washington (CPOW). The property formerly was a private school associated with St. Peter Catholic Church. On Sept. 11, ground was broken to expand that building to house a larger Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) compliant winter shelter and enrichment services, including job skills training, career and financial

counseling, and a computer lab. Currently, ECHOS, the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, the Clothing Barn, Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), and the Elizabethtown Area HUB are housed at CPOW. Doug Lamb, UCEA chaplain, said that the organization purchased the original property with a plan to expand. “We knew that all the programs and services we wanted to provide would not fit in the existing buildings,” he said, adding that UCEA was drawn to the property by the open baseball field and playground areas that were part of the campus. The number of clients who are served by the center has grown significantly since CPOW opened. Lamb reported that the food pantry had seen a large increase in clients, serving as many as 165 families per month. Jones noted that need for the winter shelter increased by 20% last year, when the organization served more than 70 individuals. In ECHOS’ past fiscal year, 800 individuals were helped. So You Want To Start A Blog

Let’s Go Camping! A Safer Way To Travel Is Trending

With unemployment in the double digits nationally and with limits on how much socialization can be done in person, starting a blog might seem like an ideal solution. Bloggers can earn an income while interacting with people outside their own households from the safety of their homes. However, there is more to becoming a successful blogger than just opening a WordPress account. It is easy to start a blog, but it can be challenging to keep it going.

The pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families looking into and plunging into camping during the summer of 2020. For fall, that trend does not seem to be slowing much, and fall weather is often ideal for camping activities. Scot Ash, general manager of Shady Maple RV in East Earl, has seen a 50% increase in sales over 2019, and he said that the majority of those sales involved first-time buyers. “RVing is an alternative

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

organizations hope to have the larger winter shelter ready by January 2021. ECHOS administers a number of programs in addition to overseeing the winter shelter, but its duties will expand when the addition is completed. UCEA will have charge of the common areas of the building. “(UCEA) will be overseeing the reception area and training room,” reported Lamb. The rest will allow ECHOS to provide more services for area families. “It will expand our ECHOS offices and provide for enrichment services,” said Jones, noting that the focus will be on services related to education and providing avenues to seek jobs. Specifically, a computer lab with free online training will be on-site. “We have partnered with PA CareerLink for certification courses, and there will be a bilingual career navigator,” reported Jones. Budgeting workshops, community education workshops, and a mentoring program are also planned. “We will be able to meet physical needs by connecting people to other agencies that provide short-term services,” said Jones. “This is all about moving a family forward through their crisis from surviving to thriving.” Jones added that expanding the winter shelter will be a key to helping families move forward successfully. “We know individuals who are at risk who cannot stabilize in their homes,” she said. “We provide a winter shelter and a dedicated staff member to work with families to navigate them through the system to get them the resources and support that they need and to be housed,” she said. Contributors that have helped make the expansion possible include Lancaster Housing and Redevelopment Authority, which contributed $784,000 in a series of grants; Rotary of Elizabethtown, which provided money for enrichment center; and the United Way of Lancaster County. “ECHOS is the spearhead agency for the Elizabethtown Area Hub, one of the United Way’s collective impact partnerships,” explained Jones. The cost of the building is estimated at more than $2 million. “We are at a huge stepping off point here, where we need to purchase $1.5 million in bonds to

“I stay motivated because I picked a topic that is just our life. It’s something that I’m very interested in,” said Ephrata resident Kathy McClure, who launched the Frugal Lancaster blog in 2010. “Don’t start a blog on something new to you. Choose something that you’re already doing and interested in.” McClure began blogging as a way to share with others how she and her husband saved money while raising children. Initially, the blog focused on how to use coupons effectively. It also featured a part-discount, part-referral deal program, and McClure estimated that her family saved more than $1,000 on dining and entertainment thanks to the program that first year. As the family grew and ways to save money changed from coupons to gas points, the blog also shifted. “I just share about things I use and do myself,” McClure said. “Most of the time, it’s just, we’re living life, and I share it.” During the last few months, McClure has seen people starting blogs on current hot topics such as homesteading and homeschooling. “Look at your gifts and your interests. Look at what people are asking you about and go from there. Be creative. Try it and see what works. Some people start channels for their pets,” she said. “If it brings you joy, (consider it for a blog). We’re in a time where we need things that bring us joy.” There are multiple ways to earn an income through a blog. Traditionally, these have included advertisements

placed on a page as well as sponsored posts in which businesses pay bloggers to write about products or events. Now, there are services like Patreon through which bloggers may offer special access to posts on Instagram or subscriptions so readers will not see ads on their blogs. Running an Instagram account, along with having an active Facebook page or group, has become crucial for earning an income from blogging. McClure spends as much time on Facebook and Instagram posts as she does on blog posts, and she uses her blog as a content resource center where she creates posts that she shares on social media. “I think I’ve become more of an influencer than a blogger,” she said. “It’s a lot of Instagram stories and posts that people connect with.” Posting to social media is relatively simple because images, not text, are the focus, but McClure expressed a bias toward having a blog as a backup. “If Instagram goes

Penryn Photos will be displayed in a Winter Shelter Road, Manheim, will host a drive- slideshow on a 21-foot LED screen at the drive-through parade. Opportunities to win prizes will also be available during the event on Facebook Live by searching for the “Manheim Drivethru Parade 2020” event. Donations will be received for Mount Hope Retirement Community and the local FFA and 4-H groups. These organizations were selected because the church believes now is an important time to help senior citizens in the community; the farm show is all about students and their love for animals; and these groups fundraise by selling food each year at the Manheim Farm Show. The rain date for the parade is Thursday, Oct. 8. For more details, readers may visit www.manheimbic.org/parade or www.facebook.com/manheimbic, email info@manheimbic.org, or call 717-665-2133.

During the event, spectators will be invited to drive through the church parking lot and enjoy many sights and sounds of the traditional Manheim Farm Show parade, including rescue vehicles, farm equipment, animals, and sponsor stands. At the end of the parade, the church will offer free milkshakes while supplies last. Local Manheim businesses have provided prizes for the best decorated car, a photo contest, and more. To participate in the photo contest, community members may submit a photo of a special creation, animal, or other item that they would have entered or exhibited in the Manheim Farm Show.

Because it was early morning and cold, the snake was sluggish. Kim Pierce and her husband, Gene, of Terre Hill, graduated from a tent to a hybrid camper a few years ago, but she still prefers cooking over an outdoor fire to using the stove in her camper. The couple’s first date was a backpacking outing on the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. “(After) we had a family, we camped at state parks in tents,” said Kim, who noted she loves her hybrid because the canvas reminds her of tenting. Kim honed her campfire skills when she did an internship at Yellowstone and worked as a park ranger in Caledonia State Park. She was introduced to a book called “Roughing It Easy” by Diane Thomas, where she learned how to make a stove from a tuna can, corrugated paper, and paraffin and to cook eggs and bacon in a paper sack. “You can cook cheaply over the fire,” said Kim, who currently cooks meals in foil pouches and mixes up pancake batter before leaving home so it’s ready to pour at the campsite. “We make breakfast burritos so we don’t need utensils,” said Kim, who noted that the smoky smell of a campfire is a delight to her. “There’s something about … being in the outdoors and smelling the fire,” she said. “I like the smell.” New Holland resident Steve Loewen bought his “toy hauler” camper several years ago and converted the area where motorcycles would be stored into a bed. way to travel that allows families to social distance while traveling and while camping,” said Ash, who pointed out that campers have their own beds, baths, and cooking and eating facilities traveling with them. “It keeps the family unit together,” said Ash. However, the safety factors and other benefits of camping can be achieved without “glamping,” as RVing is sometimes called. ELANCOarea residents and hiking buddies Laura Zimmerman and Jessica Zimmerman, who are related through Laura’s dad and Jessica’s grandmother, do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as 10 days with up to 35 pounds of clothes, food, water and other supplies, including a tent, on their backs. They can cover as much as 10 miles per day, and they have camped in places like the Quehanna Trail in Elk County, the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga County, and Jessica’s favorite, Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County. The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures that can drop into the teens. Laura noted that to keep the food supplies light, they take along a lot of pasta and rice, and they carry dried beef. Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. Jessica noted that enjoying the journey in nature is a focus of the hiking trips. “When I am out backpacking, it would be a disappointment if I went home without seeing any wildlife,” said Jessica, who notes she is especially on the lookout for rattlesnakes and copperhead snakes, but she has also seen bear, elk, fishers (which are similar to weasels or minks), foxes, coyotes, elk, deer, and flying squirrels. “You didn’t mention porcupines,” added Laura. Jessica relayed that during a hike through Harvey Winter State Park, a

Bears Drop a Tight One to Donegal, 3-2

BY ERIC PYLES

Two days later the Lady Bears made the trip to Lampeter. Alisia Alvarez picked up two third quarter goals for E-town but it was not enough to stop Lampeter-Strasburg from surging to a 5-2 win. Lampeter-Strasburg kept Telenko busy in goal with 31 shots, leading to 26 saves. Elizabethtown finished the week with a Friday trip to Manheim. The two sides needed overtime to decide a winner with Central coming out on top 2-1. Hailey Mertz forced the extra session with her unassisted third quarter score while Telenko finished with 11 saves in the loss. FOOTBALL The first Friday of October sent the E-town football team to Witmer where the Bears were hoping for a treat in line with their 42-6 week one win. Instead the Bears ended up tricked, resulting in a 10-7 loss to the host Buckskins. Both sides experienced difficul-

The boys’ soccer team picked up their first win of the 2020 season on October 2nd, topping Penn Manor 3-1. Donny Henriques needed just three saves thanks to scores from David Fry, Daniel Tema and Mitchell Garber. The Bears had endured two losses to open the season before the Penn Manor win, falling to Lampeter-Strasburg and Garden Spot. Henriques recorded another three saves against L-S but Derrick May was able to beat the junior keeper twice, including the game winner in overtime, to give Lampeter-Strasburg the win. The Lady Bears picked up their first win on the 28th, topping Lebanon but dropped their headto-head with Ephrata by a single point. Madeline Quinn led the way with a first place run while Jordan DiRisio and Sierra Kapcsos joined her in the top 10. The Lady Bears picked up two more wins on October 1st, slipping by Hempfield and lapping Penn Manor. E-town did fall to Cedar Crest giving them a 2-1 day. Quinn pulled out a surprise win, topping reigning L-L champ, Gwyneth Young of Cedar Crest, while DiRisio (fourth) and Kapcsos (fifth) gave E-town three inside the top five. The boy’s team found the going more difficult with losses to Ephrata, Lebanon, Cedar Crest, Hempfield and Penn Manor leaving the Bears winless in 2020. Nathan Johnson and Garrick English claimed the only top 20 finishes in either meet with Johnson taking second and English seventh in their tri-meet with Lebanon and Ephrata. Johnson finished his Thursday race 29 seconds quicker but with stiffer competition he slid down to 19th place. English closed out the top 20 with his 17:54. TENNIS The girl’s tennis team closed out their regular season on the 28th with a 6-1 win over Lebanon. Allison Evans, Julia Anderson and Grace Caims picked up singles wins while Evans and Rylee Bender, Mia Giordano and Caims plus Angelina Hemsch and Allison Lowell posted doubles victories. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team nearly posted a perfect week with only a 2-1 setback to Penn Manor keeping E-town from perfection. Lily Heistand picked up the score while Kaitlyn Snyder finished with eight saves. The Lady Bears blew by Garden Spot on Wednesday, posting a 7-1 win thanks to two goals games from Olivia Anson and Jena Witters. Add in scores from Heistand, Abigail Sedun and Jacqueline Bruno and you get an easy game in goal for Snyder and Lizzie Carter who combined for 12 saves. Elizabethtown needed double overtime to pick up their first win of the week, slipping by Lampeter-Strasburg 2-1 on the 28th. Heistand scored the game winner with just seconds remaining after taking a pass from Snyder who picked up the win thanks to her 20 saves. Josie Spayd put E-town up early with help from Bruno. VOLLEYBALL Girls’ volleyball improved to 3-1

with wins over Cocalico and Manheim Central sandwiched around a 3-0 loss to Garden Spot. The Spartans won 25-14, 2515 and 25-21 to hand Elizabethtown their first loss of 2020. The Lady Bears rebounded with a 3-1 win over Central with Angela Costa-Quimet and Liz Kern leading the way to wins of 29-27, 25-10 and 25-16. Kern had 11 kills and four blocks while Costa-Quimet had 35 assists. The Lady Bears had an easier time with Cocalico on the 28th, winning 259, 25-6 and 25-8 for the sweep.
