Community Place on Washington,

Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood. Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013. In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.” Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a mammogram,

Thrive and Grit is just one of many area organizations supporting the fight against breast cancer. Here’s a sampling of some of the other local groups that are fighting back against the disease and supporting breast cancer patients and survivors:

Thrive And Grit from pg 1 ultrasound, and biopsy completed within the week. She was diagnosed with a pregnancy-related breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday. Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance. “She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.” Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started

Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit. Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future.

Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn and other volunteers create and deliver uplifting boxes filled with gift cards for cleaning services and meal deliveries and other helpful items and goodies to assist women of all ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn. Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to. “She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn. “She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.” To learn more about supporting the mission of Thrive and Grit, readers may visit www.thriveandgrit.org.

Apple Festival from pg 1

WHERE: Community Place on Washington 61 E. Washington Street Elizabethtown, PA 17022

always well-received by the crowd. The menu at Apple Festival will include grilled Groff’s bratwurst sandwiches, hot dogs, homemade baked beans, applesauce, fresh apples, chicken corn soup, vegetarian apple squash soup, potato chips, mulled cider, and other beverages. Plenty of apple-based desserts will be available to purchase, too, such as dumplings, crisp, cakes, and pies. Apple cider making demonstrations led by Bainbridge resident Darl Williams will take place throughout the day, and visitors may sample the fresh, hot cider. A silent auction and apple giveaways will also be part of the festival. Children’s activities will include bobbing for apples, a coloring contest, flying disc throwing, and jumping rope, as well as a story time focused on Johnny Appleseed at 2 p.m. Guest speaker Dr. Iren Snavely of York County will offer a presentation titled “Young Sam Haldeman: The Making of an

American Scientist.” Snavely retired as the rare books librarian at the State Library of Pennsylvania in 2018. He is a 1975 graduate of Geneva College and received his Master of Library Science from Drexel University in 1996. He also holds a Master of Arts in European history from Temple University and a doctorate in early modern European history from the University of Chicago. Snavely is a previous editor of The Journal of Religious & Theological Information and the author of numerous articles and reviews on the 16th-century Reformation and early modern Europe. He has published articles on Pennsylvania religion, science, and historiography, profiling such important figures as Pennsylvania naturalists Alexander Wilson and Thomas Say and Pennsylvania Gov. Samuel W. Pennypacker. “Sam Haldeman was very much selftaught, and it wasn’t because he didn’t get a good education,” said Snavely. He relayed the story of Haldeman - who was born at

the mansion in 1812 - attending Dickinson College for two years before dropping out. “He said, ‘I had to learn it for myself,’” Snavely said. “He was quite a good thinker and was a specialist in a lot of areas.” Snavely said that his talk will emphasize how Haldeman became the accomplished individual that he was. Haldeman’s accolades range from being a professor to corresponding with individuals like Charles Darwin and Noah Webster and publishing articles in what Snavely said were some of the most prominent journals of the time period. “I’d say he’s the most important central Pennsylvania scientist you’ve never heard of,” Snavely said with a laugh. Proceeds from Apple Festival will be put toward preserving and maintaining the mansion. For more details in HMPS, people may visit www.haldeman -mansion.org. Readers with questions about Apple Festival may call Jackson at 717-426-3794.

Hundreds of memorial flags are needed to replace the weather-worn flags used in the Avenue of Flags presentation and to fill in the newly expanded burial sections at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville. The Avenue of Flags presentation at this national cemetery currently is a display of more than 550 USA interment (casket/memorial) flags attached to 20foot staffs placed along the driveways of the cemetery. With the new grave section expansion, the Flags-Up event in May of 2020 will initially need at least 660 interment flags to complete the display and flag donations continuing through the year to maintain a supply of replacement interment flags. Specifically, an interment flag is the flag presented to the surviving family member at a military honors funeral. The Department of Veterans Affairs has a strict policy stating only interment flags are permitted to be flown on the Avenue of Flags. Through the years, many families have donated their flags to be flown on the Avenue of Flags at this national cemetery as a tribute to their deceased loved one regardless of where the veteran is buried. The cemetery’s Memorial Council invites the public to become involved in the Avenue of Flags program by donating their family’s interment flag and allowing the Memorial Council to fly it on the

Gilhool took matters into his own hands for Elizabethtown’s next score, picking up a one-yard TD that cut the Spot lead to 19-13 at the half. It took until the fourth quarter but E-town and Gilhool found their way back to the end zone to complete the comeback. This time it was a three-yard Gilhool scamper that moved the Bears in front for the first time at 20-19 after the Cade Denlinger PAT kick. Rice capped his stellar game with a nine-yard TD run that set the final at 27-19. Rice finished with two touchdowns and 100 total yards of offense with the bulk (79 yards) coming on the ground. A win is a win and it only matters which side has more points when the final horn sounds but as the first half of their October 4th clash with the Spartans moved along, things were looking dicey for the Bears. Garden Spot, or more specifically quarterback Jesse Martin, came out of the gate hot, as the junior signal caller helped to engineer a 19-0 lead on the shell-shocked Bears. Martin’s start included two trips to the end zone in the opening frame

to Garden Spot with wins over Solanco and Manheim Central last week. The Lady Bears had little trouble with Solanco on senior night, October 1, sweeping the Mares 25-12, 25-17, 25-14. Sydney Stewart led the way with 12 kills, five aces and one block. Ashley NyeSmith added nine digs while Hayden Calaman chipped in with 36 assists. Elizabethtown needed four sets to get by Central on the 3rd but wins of 25-17, 25-8 and 25-9 did the trick. The Lady Barons avoided the sweep with a 31-29 win in the third game. Stewart collected 17 kills with Calaman finishing with another 36 assists to go with four aces. NyeSmith posted a team high 18 digs with McKenna Dare tallying a team high two blocks. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team remained in the hunt for a coveted L-L playoff berth with a 2-0 week that moved the Bears to 8-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in Section Two. The big win of the week came on October 3rd when E-town slipped by Ephrata, 1-0. The victory kept the Bears in second place in the section, above the Mountaineers and Lampeter-Strasburg, and in control of that second L-L berth. Adam Evans put the Bears up early with his unassisted goal in the 4th minute while JJ Oberholtzer kept Ephrata off the board with six saves. Two days earlier Elizabethtown used two second half goals to get by Garden Spot 2-1. Evans, with help from Jake Sevcik, gave the home team a 1-0 lead early in the second half but

Garden Spot bounced back in the 55th minute. Brandon Sensenig setup Walker Martin who managed to get the better of Oberholtzer (three saves) to knot the game at 1-1. The Warriors strung together a few second half prospects, which awarded them with a goal of their own, but not enough to challenge the Chargers’ well-established lead. The scoreboard saw no changes in the first half of last Tuesday’s contest against Covenant Christian, but the second half was a very different story, and the Chargers emerged with a 3-2 triumph. Covenant retaliated with two lategame goals of their own, narrowing the deficit to a one-goal margin, but time was not on their side, and the buzzer sounded with the Chargers up, 3-2. “They had their best possession of the season and it showed up in results with three wins,” Myers reflected on the week. “We will need to keep this up as we head into the last week of the season.” VOLLEYBALL Charger volleyball won nine straight sets last week to blank three consecutive competitors, dishing out 3-0 losses to Covenant Christian, Lebanon Catholic, and Christian School of York.

tie for 32nd place and one shot below the opening day cut line. That meant Williams made a return trip to York on line, bringing an end to his season. October 5th for a second round of District Williams finished his first day of golf. The junior stepped up his game, finaction +12 which put him in a four-way ishing with a seven over, 79 for the day. That was good enough to shuffle him up five spots, to 27th, in the final standings but left him short of the PIAA qualifying line by four strokes. CROSS COUNTRY The Elizabethtown cross country teams took part in their penultimate meet of the 2019 regular season on October 1st, taking on McCaskey and Manheim Township in Neffsville. The Lady Bears exited the meet 2-0 on the day and 7-1 on the season after topping McCaskey (25-31) and Township (28-30). Katie Locker was the first of three Lady Bears to finish in the top 10, taking first with a time of 19:45. Madeline Quinn (3rd, 20:38) and Sierra Kapcsos (4th, 20:43) finished back-to-back. Olivia Shenk (11th, 21:53) and Katie Hook (20th, 23:38) rounded out Elizabethtown’s top five. Facing stiff competition, the boy’s side was unable to secure a team win, falling to McCaskey (20-41) and the host Blue Streaks (23-38). Jessie Myers Photo by Cheri Sine matched Locker’s win, taking the Hayden Calaman makes a set for the Bears during their 3-0, Section race with a time of 16:49 but Two win over Solanco last Tuesday only one other Bear managed to finish inside the top 10. That was in E-town.

TENNIS The girl’s tennis season came to a close on October 4th and 5th with the Lady Bears taking part in the LancasterLebanon League Flight Tournaments. Anna Bert and Allison Evans posted Etown’s lone win of the championships, topping Solanco’s Michaela Brenneman and Sophia Stoltzfus by an 8-3 final in the opening round of the Flight Three bracket. The pair Photo by Cheri Sine was unable to continue their Ashley NyeSmith bumps a Solanco serve run falling to the top seeded for the Bears during their 3-0, Section tandem of Rory Cantwell and Two win at home last Tuesday. Sarah Shaub (Hempfield) in on the other side of the coin two days the quarterfinals by an 8-0 final.

Evans also found herself on the wrong side of her Flight Four singles match opposite Lampeter-Strasburg’s Nora Holmes. Evans took the first set, 7-6 (7-4), but the three seed rebounded with wins of 6-1 and 10-1 to take the match and bring Evans’ season to a close. Kate Weissend and Lauren Masser also took part in the L-L championships. Weissend, a Section Two All-Star nominee, had trouble shaking Grace Lehman of Hempfield, falling to the Lady Knight in Flight One singles and Flight One doubles action. Weissend teamed up with Masser to take on Lehman and Tierney Cantwell in doubles play with the Hempfield duo posting a 61, 6-4 win. Weissend’s troubles with Lehman also resulted in a 6-1, 6-1 loss in their singles battle. “She played very well but lacked the years of experience that Lehman had,” said head coach McBride. Masser also dropped her singles match, falling out of the Flight Two bracket with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg’s Ryan Gerhardt. Despite the first-round trouble for her squad McBride was happy. “I felt like they all played well and were happy with the way they played.” FIELD HOCKEY Elizabethtown field hockey saw their string of one-goal games run to five after all three of their L-L battles finished with a 1-0 final last week. Despite losing two of those three games there is a drastic improvement over the first half of the season. Over E-town’s first nine games they were outscored 26-11 with three wins. Having played just six of the remaining nine games the Lady Bears have nearly the same number of wins with two and have scored as many goals, seven, as they have surrendered. The result is a 5-10 record with some momentum heading into the final week of the season. On September 30th the Bears suffered a 1-0 loss to Cocalico. Alana Sterner scored the game winner for the host Lady Eagles, slipping one by Alaina Telenko (four saves) with 9:46 remaining in the game. The Lady Bears found themselves

freshman players are stepping into big roles with Winters and Lilly Albright knocking in a goal apiece. “I’ve asked a lot of my defensive line, comprised of Elena Hatfield, Olivia Yordy, Ruth Hynum, and Rachel Thomas,” noted Schmitkons. “We rely on them to hold defense, but to also be part of the attack and get in dangerous places.” Despite the lopsided final score, Covenant did prove to have the ability to create hazardous shots on goal during their limited opportunities on the other end of the field, but the shutout was preserved largely in thanks to seven key saves from MC keeper Marlie Neidwick.

a combined effort. Naomi Ewing’s shot rattled around the box, deflected off both the crossbar and the keeper, and found Breanna Winters who was there to ensure the ball crossed the goal line. Unfortunately for the Chargers, their late game surge was nipped by a quick overtime goal from the Eagles to conclude the bout. Tuesday’s 5-0 win over New Covenant was a highlight in the week, with every single player needed to fill a position on the field-and not always the position they prefer to be in. “It’s the small plays and moments when they implement something, or try something we’ve emphasized in practice that I’m most proud of,” described Schmitkons of her tenacious crew. “They are a group willing to try and willing to work. They know they don’t play perfectly, but they put in the effort and persevere.” Those efforts can often be seen in the way the team shares success, including the five goals scored in the Covenant shutout. Defensive back Olivia Yordy powered in two of the Charger goals, while still supplying defensive coverage for the squad. later with a 1-0 win over Garden Spot. The victory avenged a 2-1 overtime loss to the Spartans back on September 12th. Alisia Alvarez scored the game’s lone goal, with help from Emily Epps, in the opening half and Telenko made it stand with a five save game. Against Manheim Central on October 4, the Bears fell short, for the second time this season, 1-0. Telenko stopped 14 of the 15 shots she faced but she was unable to stop Janna Lutz’s offering that came with 4:58 remaining in the game. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team navigated the second to last week of the regular season without suffering a loss. Despite posting a 4-1 win over Garden Spot on October 1st the highlight of the week came on the 3rd when the Lady Bears pushed the Section Two leading Lady Mountaineers of Ephrata to a 2-2 tie. Kaitlyn Snyder allowed two scores to Reagan McCarty but her 10 saves held the rest of the Ephrata attack in check. McCarty’s goals came back-to-back on both sides of the break, turning Elizabethtown’s 1-0 lead into a 2-1 Ephrata advantage. Alicia Underkoffler, with help from Olivia Shuck, gave E-town that 1-0 lead in the 9th minute. Abby Sedun knotted the game for good in the 77th minute, forcing overtime with 3:41 left in regulation. The going was much easier in the 4-1 win over Garden Spot. Kaelynn Sheetz was the motor that made the offense go, scoring once while assisting on the other three. Her first assist came 2:21 after the opening whistle when she found Amber Bostdorf for a 1-0 lead. Sheetz made it 2-0 just 99 seconds later with her lone goal, using a Shuck pass to aid the effort. The Lady Bears continued to press which resulted in another Sheetz assist, this one to Sophia Berry at 7:29. The onslaught wrapped up in the 30th minute when Sheetz hit Olivia Anson for a 4-0 cushion. Snyder lost her shutout bid when Mataya Hostetter scored Garden Spot’s lone goal just before halftime Photo by Deb Grove Brett Taylor advances the ball for the Chargers during their 3-2, but her six saves ensured the win. Coping With Sudden Death, a fourweek series, will take place on Wednesdays, Oct. 23 to Nov. 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Pathways Center. The free series will provide a safe place to explore one’s questions and feelings and connect with others who have similar experiences. Space is limited; registration is required. Call the Pathways Center by Wednesday, Oct. 16, to speak with a bereavement counselor to determine if the group will meet their needs.

Five local apprentices received top scores at the ABC Keystone’s annual Craft Competition on Sept. 21 at the chapter’s training facility in Manheim. Earning the top scores in their respective trades provides these apprentices the opportunity to move on to the 2020 ABC National Craft Competition to be held March 26, 2020, in Nashville, and they will each receive from the chapter an all-expenses-paid trip to the com-

petition. All competitors received Home Depot gift cards. The fourth-year top-scoring apprentices represented five trades: carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and sheet metal. ABC Keystone has a history of producing National Craft Championship medal winners representing the southcentral Pennsylvania area. The 2019 ABC Keystone local Craft Competition top scorers

were Jarrad Fulgenzi of Lancaster, sheet metal, Frey Lutz Corp.; Bradley Gerberich of Carlisle, HVAC, Penn State Construction; Sean Herr of Lancaster, electrical, John E. Fullerton Inc.; Jeremy Spangler of Conestoga, plumbing, Haller Enterprises Inc.; and Brandon Thomas of Ronks, carpentry, Warfel Construction Company. The timed competition followed a similar format as the upcoming national competition, and

apprentices were challenged to follow plans to craft projects that tested their skills, knowledge, and attention to safety. The competition has two components: the written test, which counts for 25% of the total score, and the practical hands-on competition, which counts for 75% of the total score. In addition to showcasing their top-quality work, the competitors must also adhere to strict safety standards.

The Keystone Chapter’s Pennsylvania-registered apprenticeship program offers education in seven trades and focuses on hands-on training under the guidance of experienced instructors. To learn more, readers may visit https://abckeystonecenter.org.
