UCEA Breaks Ground At CPOW BY ANN MEAD ASH
eb Jones, executive director of ECHOS (Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services), knows that many Elizabethtown and Mount Joy area residents have been waiting for the groundbreaking that occurred at 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, on Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. “It was a longtime dream of community members to have a social services agency here in Elizabethtown,” said Jones. “It was decades.” That dream began to come to fruition in 2018 when United Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) secured the Washington Street property, now known as Community Place on Washington (CPOW). The property formerly was a private school associated with St. Peter Catholic Church. On Sept. 11, ground was broken to expand that building to house a larger Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) compliant winter shelter and enrichment services, including job skills training, career and financial counseling, and a computer lab.
ECHOS administers a number of programs in addition to overseeing the winter shelter, but its duties will expand when the addition is completed. UCEA will have charge of the common areas of the building. “(UCEA) will be overseeing the reception area and training room,” reported Lamb. The rest will allow ECHOS to provide more services for area families. “It will expand our ECHOS offices and provide for enrichment services,” said Jones, noting that the focus will be on services related to education and providing avenues to seek jobs. Specifically, a computer lab with free online training will be on-site. “We have partnered with PA CareerLink for certification courses, and there will be a bilingual career navigator,” reported Jones. Budgeting workshops, community education workshops, and a mentoring program are also planned. “We will be able to meet physical needs by connecting people to other agencies that provide short-term services,” said Jones. “This is all about moving a family forward through their crisis from surviving to thriving.”
Advoz Partners With Local Police Departments Advoz: Mediation and Restorative Practices recently announced its partnership with the Elizabethtown Borough and Northwest Regional police departments in launching the new Rapid Referral Mediation (RRM) Program. The initiative establishes a coordinated referral process that will extend the continuum of services available to everyone in Lancaster County. The goal of the partnership is to bridge police and community partnerships

Currently, ECHOS, the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, the Clothing Barn, Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), and the Elizabethtown Area HUB are housed at CPOW. Doug Lamb, UCEA chaplain, said that the organization purchased the original property with a plan to expand. “We knew that all the programs and services we wanted to provide would not fit in the existing buildings,” he said, adding that UCEA was drawn to the property by the open baseball field and playground areas that were part of the campus. The number of clients who are served by the center has grown significantly since CPOW opened. Lamb reported that the food pantry had seen a large increase in clients, serving as many as 165 families per month. Jones noted that need for the winter shelter increased by 20% last year, when the organization served more than 70 individuals. In ECHOS’ past fiscal year, 800 individuals were helped. The organizations hope to have the larger winter shelter ready by January 2021.
If there is a platinum lining to the cancellation of large in-person events, it is this: Moving events online allows anyone, anywhere in the world, to attend, provided they have an internet connection. Kelly Brazzo, co-founder and cochair of the CureLGMD2i Foundation, has taken advantage of that opportunity in her plans for the 10th annual signature game night, which is the organization’s largest fundraising event. “People from all over the country are signing up,” Brazzo said. “The majority are people with the disease who haven’t been able to attend in the past because of travel limitations.” Brazzo predicted that more than 300 people will log on for the online event on Saturday, Oct. 24, rather than the usual 130 to 150 who have attended previous years’ events at Eden Resort and the Lancaster Elks. One of those people will be Dallas, Texas, resident Melissa Grove, who will serve as the master of ceremonies. Grove is a therapist and a professional speaker with a background in
theater arts. She also has limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2i (LGMD2i), a genetic condition that results in weakness and muscle wasting, particularly in the shoulder and hip areas. It is a progressive disease and can result in significant cardiovascular, respiratory, and overall physical complications. Grove was diagnosed at 18 and is now 52. She runs a $2 million nonprofit in North Texas but has begun making plans for her transition out

rebuilding efforts to the Rama Cay people of Nicaragua, cyclone relief to the NiVan villagers of Vanuatu, and lifeskills training and educational support in Papua New Guinea and Moldova. FIA has created opportunities for more than 215,000 people to hear the Gospel. Readers who would like to learn more about Friends In Action can participate in one of the events FIA is hosting this fall to raise awareness and funds for Christian mission outreaches. To better adhere to CDC guidelines for social distancing, FIA will host two mission banquets this year. The first will take place on Friday, Oct. 30, at Best Western Premier The Central Hotel & Conference Center, 800 E. Park Drive, Harrisburg. An identical banquet will be offered at
Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, on Friday, Nov. 6. At both locations, doors will open at 5:30 p.m. A served buffet dinner will feature beef tips, lemon herb chicken, and assorted desserts. The evening’s program will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The banquets will include a show of appreciation for volunteers, donors, and sponsors, as well as videos from the NiVan, Wewak, and Rama Cay people groups and testimonies from the field. Attendees will hear stories from the Messiah College student engineering team and students involved in The Collaboratory, a center for project-based learning at Messiah College. Skits, games, prizes and giveaways, auctioned items, and information kiosks will also be part of the events. See FIA pg 3

The groom is the son of Louis Karl Heck II of Kein, N.H. He graduated from Kein High School as well as Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey. He is employed by Hershey Medical Center in Hershey. An October wedding is planned.
Jones added that expanding the winter shelter will be a key to helping families move forward successfully. “We know individuals who are at risk who cannot stabilize in their homes,” she said. “We provide a winter shelter and a dedicated staff member to work with families to navigate them through the system to get them the resources and support that they need and to be housed,” she said. Contributors that have helped make the expansion possible include Lancaster Housing and Redevelopment Authority, which contributed $784,000 in a series of grants; Rotary of Elizabethtown, which provided money for enrichment center; and the United Way of Lancaster County. “ECHOS is the spearhead agency for the Elizabethtown Area Hub, one of the United Way’s collective impact partnerships,”

explained Jones. The cost of the building is estimated at more than $2 million. “We are at a huge stepping off point here, where we need to purchase $1.5 million in bonds to cover the expansion costs,” said Lamb. Individuals wishing to take part in this fundraising effort may visit https: //communityplaceetown.org for more information. Jones noted that being able to meet the basic needs of families increases their chances for a positive outcome, which in turn benefits everyone. “It not only impacts the individual and the family, but it strengthens our community as a whole,” she said. “Our community is much stronger as we collaborate together.” Information about ECHOS and its programs may be obtained by visiting https://echoslancaster.org.

Now is the time to attend Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.
In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. while transforming conflict through conversation. The inspiration for this program came from the police departments expressing their need for a different type of response for certain cases. Meanwhile, Advoz, founded in 1981 as Lancaster Mediation, was also seeking ways to address conflict in local communities when they erupt, rather than months later in court. “Police officers are usually really great negotiators, and we work and train hard to bring peace to every situation that we face, but police officers generally do not have the time or training to effectively mediate situations that have taken weeks, months or even years to develop,” said Ed Cunningham, chief of police for Elizabethtown Borough. “The trained volunteer mediators that will be part of the Rapid Referral Mediation Program will have that time and training, and they will hopefully be able to work collaboratively with the residents to come to an amicable solution to their problem.” “Our agency has partnered with Advoz in hopes individuals involved in disputes can peacefully meet and resolve the conflict,” added Mark Mayberry, the chief of police for the Northwest Regional Police Department. “In many situations, the police are unable to resolve ongoing individual disputes.” Chris Wenden, the executive director of Advoz, said that he is pleased with the opportunity to partner with the local police departments. “It is important for us and our team of trained mediators and facilitators to be able to come alongside the police and other members of the community,” said Wenden. He explained that the program will provide police access to an online referral system through which an Advoz case manager will review the information and assign a mediator to the case within 48 hours. The program has been made possible thanks to partial funding from the Lancaster Bar Association and private donors.
of the organization. LGMD2i progression has meant that Grove has limited use of her arms and legs, and breathing is a challenge. Grove related that a barista once accidentally gave her a coffee one size larger than ordered. As Grove carried the beverage into the mall, she realized it was too heavy for her to hold. She had to stop every few steps to take a sip until it no longer strained her arm. “I’ve watched myself disintegrate. It’s a slow erosion of abilities - that’s what’s really tricky about it,” Grove commented. “Just the small things people take for granted (are difficult).” Grove and Brazzo, whose daughter Samantha is a seventh-grader who also has LGMD2i, are excited that at least two treatments for LGMD2i have entered the human trial phase. “ We always promised (Samantha) that by high school, we’d have a treatment for her,” Brazzo said.
“ We’re ahead of schedule now, if the treatment does what it promises to do.” CureLGMD2i has funded more than $600,000 in research projects, and with the announcement of clinical trials, the foundation has also begun to develop a travel fund that will cover the costs for people with LGMD2i, along with parents or aides as needed, to travel to testing sites and conferences. The foundation also hosts an annual LGMD2i conference in Iowa. “The research is very important because it’s what’s going to get us out of this, and the conference is important because it brings us together,” Grove remarked. “To be in the same room as someone with my exact same disease … is incredibly healing and important.” Grove is excited about the prospect of treatment options, and she hopes many people will attend the Oct. 24 event to learn about LGMD2i.

“Get to know some of the people you’re supporting actual people who are living with muscular dystrophy,” she invited. “They’re just living their lives and working their jobs and trying to stay afloat, but they’re doing it with a physical disease.” The games aspect of the Oct. 24 event will be minimal, but there will be a “Vegas” theme. The event will be hosted on Zoom from 7 to 9 p.m. and will include a virtual happy hour, an online auction, and prize drawings. Additionally, an LGMD2i family with professional singers will perform, the new ambassadors will be announced, and pharmaceutical company representatives will speak about available clinical trials.
