Taking Simple Steps To Help Small Businesses Thrive BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

The young couple at a dinner party that Valley Farm Supply owners J.C. and Caren Remsberg attended was frustrated with the challenges facing their small trucking company: hiring people, growing the business, and even the possibility of returning to work for someone else. The Remsbergs were empathetic, and they passed along the same advice J.C. had received from a college friend who owns a logging business.

Advoz: Mediation and Restorative Practices recently announced its partnership with the Elizabethtown Borough and Northwest Regional police departments in launching the new Rapid Referral Mediation (RRM) Program. The initiative establishes a coordinated referral process that will extend the continuum of services available to everyone in Lancaster County. The goal of the partnership is to bridge police and community partnerships while transforming conflict through conversation. The inspiration for this program came from the police departments expressing their need for a different type of response for certain cases. Meanwhile, Advoz, founded in 1981 as Lancaster Mediation, was also seeking ways to address conflict in local communities when they erupt, rather than months later in court. “Police officers are usually really great negotiators, and we work and train hard to bring peace to every situation that we face, but police officers generally do not have the time or training to effectively

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth. That’s why we’re launching a new series in our community papers called EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA. Each month we’ll feature a town in our coverage area, as well as a destination somewhere in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we hope to show that you don’t have to travel far to find great restaurants, unique shops, amazing outdoor locations, and world-class historical sites. Traveling locally can have a big impact on small businesses without having a big impact on your wallet. Take a train trip through the Pocono Mountains on the Historic Stourbridge Line, visit the Jimmy Stewart Museum and the iconic actor’s hometown, see the amazing architectural feats of Frank Lloyd Wright, and hear the distinctive bugle call of a bull elk in Pennsylvania’s northwest. There are so many fascinating destinations to be discovered across town and across Pennsylvania. Our first highlighted destination will be Jim Thorpe; look for the article in your mailbox in early November.

He explained that the program will provide police access to an online referral system through which an Advoz case manager will review the information and assign a mediator to the case within 48 hours. The program has been made possible thanks to partial funding from the Lancaster Bar Association and private donors.

The Maytown Historical Society Museum, located at 4 W. Main St., Maytown, is open for visitors’ perusal. The museum’s newest exhibit, “Old Home Week 1910,” features pictures, documents, and many artifacts from Maytown’s first historical celebration. In 1910, Maytown was 150 years old and the town decided it was time for a celebration, which was dubbed Old Home Week. A town committee was formed to plan the event. Many of the celebration’s activities were documented, and the souvenirs were preserved. These artifacts are all on display along with a detailed list of the participants in the celebration. The museum will be open on Saturday, Oct. 24, and Saturday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Rev. Robert Lescallette, museum curator and well-known local historian,

Things Your Family and Friends Want You to Know (But Are Too Polite to Say)

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American ags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is ďŹ nding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is ďŹ nding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania oers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country. Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio Paid for by Amish PAC. Elizabethtown’s final 2-1 verdict came on the 16th courtesy of Ephrata. E-town posted a 5-4 edge in corners and matched Ephrata’s four shots on goal, but two Santana saves coupled with Rachael’s goal in the 71st minute were not enough to overcome the visiting Mountaineers. with Governor Mifflin, 3-1. Santana finished with five saves while Jakob Powell, with help from David Fry, handled the offense for E-town. FOOTBALL The football team is suffering through a difficult stretch with losses to Warwick and Cocalico putting the Bear’s at 1-4 after an opening week win over McCaskey. E-town had trouble handling both the Warrior and Eagle attacks leading to a 50-9 loss to Warwick on the 9th and a 52-0 setback to Cocalico on the 16th. TENNIS The girls’ tennis team wrapped up their 2020 campaign with the LL Flight Finals starting October 8th. Allison Evans pulled double duty, taking on Conestoga Valley’s Ellie Kready in singles action while teaming up with Rylee Bender for doubles. Evans had her singles season end with a 6-1, 6-2 loss but was able to extend her double’s season thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hempfield’s Rory Cantwell and Sophie Carson. Evans and Bender were unable to advance past their quarterfinal match where they lost to Manheim Township’s number two pair, 6-0, 6-0. GOLF Alex Williams is another Bear with a wrapped-up fall 2020 season. Williams made his annual trip to Briarwood Golf Club for the District 3-3A Championship on October 9th and finished 15th after his opening round 87. Williams did par half of the holes on the East Course but that left the senior five shots off the day two cut. CROSS COUNTRY The cross-country team made one last journey into the sea of regular season meets before their postseason begins. That journey took place on October 13th with the two sides coming home from Conestoga Valley with a combined 1-3 mark. The Lady Bears claimed the lone win, topping CV 27-30 while falling to Warwick 23-38. For the boys’, it was a 23-41 loss to the hosts combined with a 25-33 loss to the Warriors. Madeline Quinn was the overall winner with a time of 19:25 while Nathan Johnson posted the top boy’s finish, his 18:04 putting him just four seconds off the winning pace. FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team used the ‘save your best for last’ approach, picking up their lone win of 2020 in their final game of the season. Kayla Williams, with help from Gabby Pistone, scored the game winner with 8:14 remaining in OT. Mikaela Condran nearly wrapped up the win in regulation with her fourth quarter score but Central was able to force the extra period with a late score of their own. Alaina Telenko picked up the win by turning away 16 shots.

The Lady Bears suffered their final two losses on October 8th and 13th, falling to Donegal and Lampeter-Strasburg by a combined 7-2 tally. Telenko had 25 stops between the two games with Sophie Brinkman and Jade Haines covering the offense. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Lady Bear soccer team saw their three-game winning streak snapped on the 12th with a 3-0 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg. Elizabethtown mustered three shots leaving most of the action on the opposite side of the pitch. That led to eight Lady Pioneer shots, two Kaitlyn Snyder saves and the 3-0 loss. The Lady Bears rebounded quickly with wins over Garden Spot, Ephrata and Governor Mifflin pushing them to the top of the Section Two standings. The easiest of those wins came against Spot on the 14th with two Jena Witter goals helping E-town to a 4-0 final. Jacki Bruno and Kendall Davies added one score each while Snyder needed just two saves to earn the shutout. Up next was a Friday trip to Ephrata with a 2-1 victory the

result. Witters put E-town up early while Lily Heistand scored the game winner in the second half. Snyder’s five saves were enough to lock up the win. The Lady Bears ventured out of conference for an October 17th match-up with Governor Mifflin, returning home with a 4-3 victory. This time it was Bruno’s two goals that paved the way with Olivia Anson and Emma Moore picking up the slack. Snyder and Lizzie Carter recorded three saves apiece. VOLLEYBALL The girls’ volleyball team ran their winning streak to six games with two wins over Ephrata and one over Lampeter-Strasburg. Etown claimed the first Ephrata meeting 3-0 on the 8th with a 3-1 victory coming four days later. Sydney Stewart, with 27 combined kills, and Angela Costa-Ouimet, putting up 60 assists, piloted the offense in the two wins. Elizabethtown kept rolling on the 15th with a 3-0 sweep over Lampeter-Strasburg. Stewart picked up another 12 kills and Costa-Ouimet another 17 assists leading to wins of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-16.
