On Thursday, Nov. 7, North Star Initiative will host a Tapas Shindig to R.I.S.E. from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at SUPPLY, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. North Star Initiative began operating The Harbor, Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, in 2017. “The common remark I get from people is, ‘Trafficking is really happening here in Lancaster County?’ And it is,” shared Janelle Esbenshade, North Star Initiative director of development. “It’s important to become aware of what’s going on and to know the facts so you can share them with other people.” Esbenshade said that the Tapas Shindig to R.I.S.E. will help people to

understand more about the issue and how they can support the ministry of North Star Initiative. Attendees will hear stories from survivors of trafficking and learn about the organization’s vision for the coming year. That vision is covered in the acronym R.I.S.E.: Renovating existing structures, Innovating through programming, Sustainability through transitional living, and remaining Established in Christ for all of the restorative services offered. The vision is also reflective of the declaration in Scripture from Micah 7:8: “Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy! Though I fall, I will rise; though I sit in darkness, the Lord is a light for me.” The Harbor is designed to provide a safe haven for women ages 18 to 40 who are survivors of sex trafficking. Olympian Shares Leadership Strategies By Chelsea Peifer

USA Field Hockey director of coach education and learning Craig Parnham, a two-time Olympic athlete and three-time Olympic coach, believes that the role of a coach is to guide - a concept he expounded on as the keynote speaker at the fifth annual Leadership Inspired event held on Oct. 16 at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim. “This team will fully function and thrive if I am removed from the process, but to get to that point takes quite a bit of work,” stated Parnham. The Susquehanna Chorale has announced that season subscriptions and tickets are now available for “Great Expectations,” the group’s 2019-20 concert season. The chorale is a nationally acclaimed adult chamber ensemble of 38 auditioned singers. It was founded in 1981 by artistic director and conductor Linda L. Tedford. The Youth Choral Festival will kick off the season on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 4 p.m. at the High Center for the Performing Arts at Messiah College, 1 College Ave., Grantham. This intergenerational event will feature performances by the 160 voices of the chorale’s educational choirs for children, youths and young women, as well as the Susquehanna Chorale. At the concert, the adult chorale will premiere “Worry Not, My Love,” a work commissioned to honor the life of an Alzheimer’s patient and to spread awareness of this debilitating disease. The song will be featured in a documentary for Johns Hopkins Hospital. This year’s Candlelight Christmas concerts will include classics interwoven with new settings of well-known texts, some featuring guest cellist Ai-Lin Hsieh. The chorale will perform Elaine Hagenberg’s “O Come, Emmanuel,” John Rutter’s “Carol of the Magi,” Donald McCullough’s arrangement of “What Child Is This?” and the spirituals “Rise Up Shepherd and Follow” arranged by Stacey Gibbs and “Mary Had a Baby” arranged by Uzee Brown Jr. Performances will take place on Friday, Dec. 13, at the High Center at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 14, at Leffler Chapel at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 15, at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg, at 4 p.m. “Through Love to Light,” the spring 2020 concert, will explore the depth of the human spirit in song. Crafted by contemporary composers, the pieces reflect humans’ capacity to love and persevere, even in the face of adversity. The concert will feature Jake Runestad’s “A Silence Haunts Me,” Eric Whitacre’s “Goodnight Moon,” Elaine Hagenberg’s “Oh Love” and “Through Love to Light,” Shawn Kirchner’s “Sweet Rivers” and James Stevens’ arrangement of “Nearer My God to Thee.” Performances will take place on Friday, May 8, 2020, at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, and Saturday, May 9, 2020, at the High Center, both at 8 p.m. Also this season, the chorale will participate in “Music in the Key of We,” a celebration of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra’s 90th anniversary and the community. Tedford has assembled a massed choir of more than 700 adult and youth singers to join the orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in honor of the composer’s 250th birthday. The public is invited to attend this event on Saturday, April 4, 2020, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg. Subscriptions to “Great Expectations” may be purchased through Thursday, Oct. 31. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Coaches - or any leaders - set the standard for a team, but Parnham emphasized that standards of excellence cannot be imposed by coaches alone. He encouraged the audience to play to the strengths of those they lead. “If you want exceptional results, you have to create exceptional circumstances,” Parnham noted. Calling out an individual’s strengths often yields greater success than harping on the bad, which has the opposite effect of not building confidence. “I’ve never met anybody that likes to be shouted at or abused in front of their peers - it just doesn’t work,” said Parnham. “Success leaves clues. Focus on the most important areas and make them trademark behaviors.” Prior to his current role, Parnham served as head coach of the USA Field Hockey Women’s National Team (USWNT), guiding it to fifth place for its highest International Hockey Federation Hero World Ranking in recent history. The team, whose official training grounds are at Spooky Nook Sports, went on to the 2016 Rio Olympics, where it earned a fifth-place finish. Under his leadership as coach, the team also won gold medals at the 2015 Pan American Games and the 2014 Champions Challenge, earned fourth place at the 2014 Rabobank World Cup, and took a bronze medal at the 2016 Champions Trophy. In 2015, the United States Olympic Committee recognized Parnham as 2015 National Coach of the Year. As a field hockey player, Parnham competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games for Great Britain, as well as the 2002 World Cup. He also coached Great Britain at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.

In addition to leadership lessons from Parnham, Leadership Inspired included a luncheon and celebration of outstanding local leadership through the announcement of the 2019 recipients of the Connect and Educate awards. The Connect Award, which honors those who provide opportunities for connecting individuals and organizations in an effort to maximize collective wisdom, went to the Neighborhood Leadership Academy (NLA). NLA is a six-session training and grant program designed to empower community leaders in Lancaster city neighborhoods. The initiative was made possible by a collaboration of the City of Lancaster, Lancaster County Community Foundation, and Leadership Lancaster. The Educate Award was given to James Cowhey for demonstrating a commitment to educating community leaders and exemplifying qualities of a servant leader. Cowhey recently retired as the executive director of the Lancaster County Planning Commission. He began serving on the commission staff in 1988 and became executive director in 2005. Following the program, the sponsors of Leadership Inspired received a VIP tour of the USA Field Hockey team’s space at Spooky Nook Sports led by current players Kelly Marks, Kealsie Robles, and Nicole Woods. Leadership Lancaster was established in 1983 by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Junior League of Lancaster County with a mission of developing outstanding community leadership to support the needs of the county. More than 2,500 people have participated in its programs, which include a nine-month Core Program, the Executive Class, a College Core Class, Leadership Advantage, and the Board Leadership Academy. Hansen Receives Four Chaplains Medal The Rev. Paul Hansen, spiritual care associate at Masonic Village at Elizabethtown and a major in the U.S. Army Reserves, 336th Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade, has been awarded the Four Chaplains Medal. Hansen accepted the award during a ceremony on Sept. 4 at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. This award, approved by the U.S. Army Chief of Chaplains, gives special recognition to chaplains who best exemplify courage, sacrifice, teamwork, and sacred values in dealing with soldiers, commanders, families, and the

U.S Army. Recipients must have demonstrated collegial selfless behavior while rendering religious support to the military community, regardless of faith or race, in keeping with the spirit of the Four Chaplains’ sacrifice. The Four Chaplains were four U.S. Army chaplains who gave their lives to save other civilian and military personnel as the troop ship U.S. Army Transport (USAT) Dorchester sank on Feb. 3, 1943, during World War II. The Four Chaplains each helped military members board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets

when the supply ran out. The chaplains gathered on deck, joined arms, said prayers, and sang hymns as the ship went down. Hansen attended SUNY Maritime College in Bronx, N.Y., as well as the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia. He worked in the maritime industry in a variety of positions from ship’s officer to port captain prior to attending seminary. Upon graduation from seminary, he has served several different Lutheran churches in Pennsylvania and was the trauma chaplain for Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

Ethiopian Meal Will Fund Clinic’s Outreach By Dayna M. Reidenouer When Wegayhu Ketema traveled to her hometown of Harar, Ethiopia, in May 2018, she took the time to revisit the rock where her dreams of nursing began. As she would wait on the rock for the school day to start, Ketema would see a nurse walk by. Ketema’s admiration of the medical professional inspired her to become a nurse. Sixteen months after her stop at the rock, Ketema returned to Ethiopia, but this time, she visited her former school. And, this time, she was the nurse inspiring others. Ketema and her husband, Demeke

Getahun, are the founders and directors of Siloam Ethiopia, a nonprofit organization that has the goal to provide free health care to the poorest of Ethiopia’s residents while also meeting spiritual and emotional needs. Getahun is the pastor of Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster (EECL), 175 Church St., Landisville, and Ketema is a registered nurse and works at a Harrisburg-area rehab hospital. The couple has worked with Immanuel Church in Harar to open Siloam Ethiopia Medium Clinic in a rented building in Harar. “I believe that the vision that Demeke

and Wegayhu have for radically changing areas of Ethiopia through meeting physical and spiritual needs is possible through God’s love for the people,” commented Siloam Ethiopia board member John Lehman. “(I’m motivated by) the goal that poverty can be changed and the people of Ethiopia can have abundant life.” Things are going well at the clinic, which launched during Ketema’s May 2018 visit and has seen more than 1,000 clients, so the ministry has begun the process of expanding its reach. Rather than spend the money to rent other facilities, Siloam Ethiopia has partnered with three rural schools to use as satellite clinics. A traveling nurse will visit each school on a regular basis to provide health care to the community. One of the host schools is the one Ketema attended as a child. During Ketema’s trip to Ethiopia in September 2019, the school gave her a copy of her transcript, which includes headshots of both Ketema and her mother. In addition to establishing satellite clinics at the three schools during her last visit, Ketema met with the Ministry of Education, which presented Siloam The school in Harar, Ethiopia, where Wegayhu Ketema attend- Ethiopia with a certificate of recognition ed as a child is one of the first three satellite medical clinic for the satellite clinics; launched weekly health visits to the approximately 75 resilocations established by Landisville-based Siloam Ethiopia. Siloam Ethiopia co-founder Wegayhu Ketema (right) was part of the launch of home visits conducted by clinic staffers during her visit in September. An Ethiopian meal in Landisville on Oct. 26 will raise funds for the ministry. To support this work, Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraising dinner at EECL on Saturday, Oct. 26, from noon to 7 p.m. Getahun and Ketema will prepare a buffet meal of traditional Ethiopian food, and diners may learn about what has been accomplished by the ministry. Takeouts will be available. Reservations are not required, but for planning purposes, readers are asked to email siloamethio@gmail.com to indicate their plans to attend. They say that history looks back fondly on champions, if that is the case then Katie Locker’s time at Elizabethtown Area High School will indeed be remembered. The senior distance runner competed in her fourth Lancaster-Lebanon League Cross Country Championship on Tuesday, October 15th, finishing second to Cedar Crest’s Gwyneth Young in a reversal of the pair’s 2018 finish. Locker was unable to capture her second straight L-L title, instead settling for her third silver medal. “What a career she has had!” exclaimed head coach Mark Gallagher. “Katie is looking forward to qualifying at Districts on Saturday the 26th and for her fourth race at the PIAA state championships the following weekend.”

While Young claimed the 2019 championship by chopping 10-seconds off of her 2018 time, Locker’s second place time of 18:58.10 was nearly 20-seconds off her gold medal pace of 2018 and 23-seconds behind’s Young winning time. Despite losing two of their top five runners from last year’s squad, the Lady Bears still managed a third-place finish in the team standings thanks to strong runs from Madeline Quinn and Sierra Kapcsos. The pair crossed the finish line mere steps apart with Quinn taking fifth with a time of 20:00.40 and Kapcsos sixth with a 20:00.70. Olivia Shenk (45th, 21:42.20) and Katie Hook (77th, 23:04.50) rounded out the scoring five for E-town. Gallagher was more than pleased

with his team’s performance, “Our girls’ team did fantastic at Leagues. It was great to see Maddie Quinn regaining her running form after missing over half the season with an injury. Newcomers Olivia Shenk and Katie Hook, both sophomores, ran solid races.” The boy’s team was unable to match their Lady Bear counterparts but four runners in the top 100 had the Bears 10th in the final team standings which according to Gallagher, “was not quite up to our expectations.” Gallagher hopes his troops “finish the season with a bang” with strong performances at the District 3 and hopefully the PIAA meets. As for the quartet of Bears in the top 100, Jesse Myers led the way with a 30th place time of 17:32.20. Alex Hartman was the next Bear to finish,

doing so 10-seconds after Myers and in 39th place. Nathan Johnson just missed the 18-minute barrier, crossing the finish line at 18:01.30 and in 56th place. Garrick English followed, finishing 68th with a time of 18:24.50. Dustin Sauder wrapped up the scoring five in 116th place with a time of 19:09.80, missing the top 100 by 13-seconds. VOLLEYBALL Typically, when a team closes out the regular season with losses in two of their final three games it signals the end of a disappointing season but that is not the case for the E-town girl’s volleyball team. In fact, despite losses to Garden Spot and South Western head coach Jenna Griest says, “I’m proud of our team for playing three straight nights of great volleyball to finish out the toughest

week in our season.” White those losses came on back-toback nights, the Lady Bears opened their final week with a 3-0 victory over Ephrata on October 14th. Twenty-five assists and three aces from Hayden Calaman coupled with 21 digs and three more aces from Ashley NyeSmith helped Elizabethtown post wins of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-13 over an Ephrata squad that finished the regular season three spots higher than the Lady Bears in the final District 3-4A rankings. Sydney Stewart added 10 kills while Kierra Hinkle matched Calaman’s and NyeSmith’s three aces. Kallee Locker chipped in with three blocks. Elizabethtown closed out their L-L slate on the 16th with a trip to New Holland to battle Garden Spot in what ended up being a Section Two title match. The Lady Spartans claimed the match and the section with wins of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-23. “It was a tough loss but I’m very proud of the fight and the grit our team played with. They never gave up and they battled in each set, especially in the fourth when we were down 18-9 and

we ran 10 straight points to take the lead,” Griest stated. “We played some great volleyball but just came up short on the night.” The great volleyball did result in a 25-22 game three victory for the visiting Lady Bears but that only served to delay Garden Spot’s win. Calaman picked up another 32 assists in the loss while Stewart collected 15 kills. Locker patrolled the net to the tune of six blocks while Ashley NyeSmith finished with 12 digs. Autumn NyeSmith added six aces. The regular season came to a close one night later with a 3-0 loss to South Western, the 4th ranked team in the final 4A power rankings. The Lady Mustangs controlled things throughout leading to comfortable wins of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-17 for the home team. Locker posted a team high 11 kills and two blocks while Calaman tallied 22 assists. Ashley NyeSmith finished with eight digs while Stewart had two aces. Mt. Calvary Boys Win CCAC Championship Leah Sintic

Mount Calvary boys’ soccer celebrated an historic feat last Friday night, bringing home the CCAC championship banner for the first time, outlasting Dayspring Christian Academy, 1-0, in the title match. The conference title has been an elusive one for boys’ soccer, but their hard earned performance this season earned them a banner to hoist, joining their fellow varsity programs with a title in the record books. “The boys were able to bring home the CCAC championship because of their dedication to our game plan,” commented head coach Marc Myers on the momentous win. “Their focus and heart were there for every minute

of the game.” The contest was held at In the Net, in Palmyra on Friday night, delivering a high intensity contest for the packed crowd from start to finish. MC monopolized the early control of the ball, outshooting the Warriors 6-1 in the first half, but it wasn’t until three minutes before the break that the Chargers notched their goal. Earning a free kick outside the 18, deep on the left side, Damian Rutt soared a perfectly placed shot over the Warrior defensive wall and just out of reach for the Dayspring keeper, finding the netting in the far upper 90. Despite an equally intense second half, the slim 1-0 lead held, thanks largely in part to three key saves from MC keeper, Reagan Mummau, to deny

Dayspring the equalizer. “They were confident going forward, and we knew we could score, but the most important thing was to keep a clean sheet,” noted Myers. In order to earn their way into the championship game, the Chargers were faced with West Shore as an opponent last Wednesday, and rallied for a 3-0 victory, while also battling the elements on a cold, windy, wet night. The first half was a deadlock of traded possessions with no alteration to the scoreboard, but the second half told a very different story. Once Rutt opened scoring with a free kick goal early in the second, momentum began to build for the MC squad. Rutt secured the second goal on a converted PK, and assisted the third which freshman Brett Taylor headed into the netting for the finishing touch on the shutout victory. Mummau held his ground to preserve the shutout, denying all three Bobcat shots. “I’m very proud of how hard the boys worked to put in a total performance on both sides of the ball,” commended Myers. With a conference title securely in their possession, the squad turns their focus to District III playoffs, hoping to extend their season even farther, pushing themselves to cultivate both skill and character. “Titles put smiles on our faces, but these boys using soccer to help grow themselves into godly men is always the goal,” concluded Myers. VOLLEYBALL Three action packed contests concluded the Lady Chargers regular season last week, adding two wins and a loss, resulting in an overall record of 15-2 and setting the stage for an exciting post-season. Friday night, the squad hosted their last home match and bested West Shore in three swift games (25-10, 25-14, 25-11). One night

The Mount Calvary boys soccer team defeated Dayspring Christian Academy, 1-0, last Friday at In The Net Sports Complex to win the 2019 Commonwealth Christian Athletic Conference Championship. earlier, MC notched another league victory, a comeback win over Dayspring Christian Academy (21-25, 25-20, 25-8, 25-22). Against West Shore, senior Molly Bert paced the team with a wellrounded effort including seven aces and five digs. On Thursday, MC allowed Dayspring to get the upper hand in the first set, and the Charger crew faced an initial 7-0 deficit, making the night a comeback from the get-go, but composure and execution brought the squad right back into the contest. “We focused on one point at a time, and although we didn’t pull out the win for that set, I was pleased with their battling,” praised head coach Kate Ferrari. The Chargers gained their footing in the subsequent sets, and turned the game around into a decisive victory, claiming three straight sets.

“They didn’t give up, and our girls started to take some of the small details we’ve been going over in practice and putting them into their game,” noted Ferrari. “It’s always a great feeling from the sidelines when you see the areas you’ve coached come to fruition and earn points on the score board.” Kami Mummau was a dominant force in the comeback, leading the team with a staggering collection of 14 kills, 12 digs, 7 aces, and 4 blocks. Kara Locker put up 18 setter assists to compliment the attack, and Brie Lehman’s four blocks bolstered the Charger defensive efforts. In a 3-1 loss to York Catholic last Monday, plenty of highlights could be found despite the triumph going to York (23-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-17). “We were very proud of our girls’ efforts. They have a great team that gave us some great competition,”

credited Ferrari. “We were grateful for the match up and our girls really stepped up their level of play.” Contributions came from multiple athletes; Mummau powered 18 kills, Locker supplied 22 assists, Kacy Robinson provided 5 digs, while Lehman and Gracie Hilsher guarded the net with two blocks apiece. This week the Lady Chargers embark on their CCAC playoff questknowing the conference title is once again within their reach. The squad hopes to exceed last year’s performance which took them all the way to the championship game, but came up just short, in a 3-0 loss to 2018 CCAC champs, Lititz Christian. Turning the corner into playoff competition, Ferrari hopes to keep her team locked in on their on their goals both physically and mentally. “We’ve tried to keep the girls focus See Chargers pg 12

E-town from pg 10 with a 3-1 win over Conestoga Valley in their Lancaster-Lebanon League quarterfinal matchup. E-town used their service game to take the opening set 25-12 but struggled with service returns in the second to fall 26-24 to the Lady Buckskins. Locker (16 kills and two blocks) with the help of Calaman (35 assists) took over the third set for a 25-14 win before the Lady Bears closed out the victory with a 25-10 triumph in the fourth set. Both Ashley and Autumn NyeSmith finished with four aces but Ashley was able to add a team high seven digs to her game. Stewart chipped in by matching Locker’s two blocks. The Lady Bears continue their post-

season with a L-L semifinal match opposite Manheim Township on October 23rd and kick off District 3-4A play on October 26th against Central Dauphin. FOOTBALL When a high school football team releases the schedule for the upcoming year there are always two games that typically carry more meaning than the others, Homecoming and Senior Night. With Solanco already having spoiled Homecoming 2019 the Bears hoped that Senior Night 2019 would end differently. The Pioneers of Lampeter-Strasburg had other ideas, using their punishing ground attack to drop E-town to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in Section Two action, courtesy of a 4013 setback.

Elizabethtown did manage 331 yards of offense but L-S racked up 250 of their 383 total yards on the ground while scoring in all four quarters to collect the comfortable victory. That scoring started with a 15-yard Alex Knapp run early in the opening frame and continued when Connor Nolt hit Ian Herr for a 38-yard score late in the quarter. The Patrick Gilhool (25 of 41 for 292 yards and two TDs) led offense did get going in the second to produce Etown’s lone score of the opening half, a 15-yard strike from Gilhool to Cole Hitz, but L-S used a one-yard Tim Martin plunge to counter that score and make it a 20-6 game at the break. Martin made his second visit to the end zone for the only points of the third quarter, a 16-yard rumble that stretched the Pioneer lead to

27-6. Bryan McKim was the fourth different Lampeter-Strasburg player to find paydirt, doing so with a nineyard scamper that opened the fourth quarter scoring and made it 34-6. Hitz (11 catches for 117 yards) and Gilhool broke up the L-S run when they connected for their second score of the night, this one from six yards. That touchdown closed the gap to 34-13 but the Pioneers tacked on one final score via a fiveyard Owen Fikkert plunge to set the 40-13 final. Cole Rice added nine catches for 162 yards in the loss while Riley Drager paced the ground attack with 44 yards on eight carries. Chargers from pg 11

The path to the final was an eventful one, with Tuesday’s semifinal round holding more than its fair share of drama, as MC edged their way past West Shore Christian by outshooting the Bobcats 2-1 in PKs after double overtimes failed to yield a victor. Things did not look good for the Chargers in the early minutes of the contest, and they found themselves working out a of 2-0 deficit after only 16 minutes on the field. “I am very impressed with how our girls didn’t put their heads down or get overly frustrated at that point,” head coach Kim Schmitkons noted of the dismal start. “They stayed positive with each other and kept fightingthey never thought they were out of the game.” Persistence coupled with patience earned them their first reward with just under three minutes left in the first half. In what has become an almost perfected art for the duo, Ewing played a beautiful cross to the far post of the Bobcat goal, where Martin headed it home. West Shore did commendable job limiting the Charger offense for the majority of the second half, making it even more vital for the MC defensive backs to keep the Bobcats from extending their 2-1 lead.

on our end goal,” summarized Ferrari. “We remind them that there are a lot of things within sports that are not in our control, but what we can control is our attitude, our emotions, and our effort. I’d like to see our girls go out there and finish strong.” GIRLS’ SOCCER Girls’ soccer also earned their way to the CCAC championship game, a showdown against High Point Baptist, but things did not go their way, leaving them on the wrong side of a 3-1 final. After a rocky start on the field, the Chargers quickly found themselves trying to claw their way back into contention facing a 2-0 deficit. Exhaustion and injury added to the battle, but refusing to quit, the club strung together a few strong offensive possessions culminating in a late firsthalf goal. Naomi Ewing sailed a corner kick opportunity directly in front of the goal, and Julia Martin got a head on it to get the Chargers back within a goal, 2-1. Unfortunately for MC, High Point had one more offensive success in the second, widening the gap and holding on for the victory.

Mt. Calvary’s Kami Mummau drives a winner past York Catholic’s Ariyana Fisher during the Chargers’ 3-0, nonleague loss last Monday at Catholic.

“Olivia Yordy had a great performance shutting down their [West Shore’s] primary playmaker,” pointed out Schmitkons. “Elena Hatfield also had a terrific game covering our back line and keeping them out of the 18. We limited their shots and Marlie [Niedwick] had some key saves.” With only 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Chargers capitalized on their first shot on goal of the second half, a run from Martin that culminated in an unassisted tying goal. The first overtime period blending into a second with neither team willing to budge, but both teams showing signs of fatigue. “The overtimes were taxing,” acknowledged Schmitkons. “Every player showed grit and determination throughout.” Determining a semifinal game in PKs is certainly exciting for spectators, though not always a welcomed thought from goalkeepers, but MC’s

keeper rose to the challenge. Over the course of the shootout, three of West Shore’s shots went high or wide, one connected, and on one, Niedwick made a pivotal diving save. For MC, Ewing and Martin stepped up to nail their shots, giving the Chargers the 2-1 advantage to advance to the championship. After the physically and emotionally draining contest, the teams took a moment to come together, displaying a unity of purpose that far outreaches the realm of athletics, thanking the Lord together for the opportunity to compete. “It was a great moment after the game to glorify God with West Shore,” described Schmitkons. “The teams came together to pray and praise God for the great seasons we had and the intense battle of the game. It is always encouraging when we can lift up praise together even after fighting so hard in the game.”

14 - MERCHANDISER - Elizabethtown Edition - October 23, 2019

Director Kevin Ditzler described the themes of “The Crucible” as timeless and relevant. “(‘The Crucible’) looks at who is to blame in all of this, and the audience will be trying to figure out how people were duped into this,” Ditzler said. “We want the audience to feel the hysteria the people of Salem felt, and attempting to do that really excited me to take on this show.” Ditzler has 20 years of experience directing shows at Lampeter-Strasburg High School and has acted in numerous

SSC performances. This will be his first time directing an SSC production. Rachel Snyder of Mount Joy will portray 17-year-old orphan Abigail Williams, who works as a live-in housekeeper for John and Elizabeth Proctor until she is kicked out by Elizabeth. “(Abigail) twists the truth so much and makes the whole town believe her lies,” Snyder said. “The tension throughout the show builds for itself,” noted Tom Sharpes of Lancaster, who will portray John. “You really identify with these characters and want them to make the right decisions. The writing is brilliant.” Madeline Ruth Pickens, who will play Elizabeth, agreed and described her

ECHOS Seeks Volunteers

character as having many layers. “It’s just so intricate. Her thought life is such a battle and trying to communicate that to the audience is difficult. I want to do that justice.” “(‘The Crucible’) is one of those shows that is always relevant, and there are still truths that can be found in it today,” added Pickens. Additional cast members include Jordan Ross Weinhold, Duane Hespell, Sharon Boyer, Steve Hassinger, Jack Hartman, Bill Ryan, David Kloser, Kelly Warren, Shekinah Qalo, Lydia Alkinburgh, Grayson Marz, Brian Noffke, Jim Johnson, Isabella Astuto, Ashley Gage, Charis Alkinburgh, and Sophie Eckman.

Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) relies on a variety of volunteer support for its work in the community to assist individuals in need. ECHOS is seeking volunteers for its moving team coordinator and donation center coordinator positions. Individuals interested in either position should email vista@echoslancaster.org or call 717-6893423, ext. 206.

Additionally, ECHOS is gearing up to open the doors to its emergency winter shelter for the fifth year. Last year, the shelter saw a 76% increase in beds used. Volunteers are sought to oversee the operations of the shelter, and the shelter is seeking 73 volunteers per week. Individuals interested in volunteering to assist with the winter shelter will need to attend one of four trainings offered by
