One aspiration of the Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster chapter is to make inclusion a priority of the program. “Our goal is to provide access (to the program) by (making) GOTR available where girls gather after school, which is not always at school,” explained GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “Many times that’s in community organizations like Boys and Girls Club,” said Johnson. “We will be inclusive in ensuring that all girls feel the curriculum is relevant and reflects their life experience and that all girls feel listened to, valued, and part of a team.” With that in mind, a team of nine girls from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club began meeting on Sept. 10, and the group will take part in its first 5K when GOTR Lancaster holds its fall run at Millersville University on Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 9 a.m. Registration for the untimed run in the Pucillo Gymnasium will begin at 7 a.m. GOTR kicked off its fall season

Jessica Wilson, who has coached the Blue Ball Elementary team, said that this year’s 5K will include a variety of activities for the girls and their running buddies. “The presenting sponsor, (a local) orthopedic and physical therapy practice, will create a temporary tattoo that reflects GOTR and the fall 5K,” said Wilson. In addition, the primping items that the girls may use before the race will include colored hair spray, face paint crayons, and bracelets they can inscribe. Wilson noted that Millersville University students take a special interest in the 5K. “All the Millersville University athletic teams send representatives on Saturday morning,” Wilson said. “As all the girls are running, (the Millersville students) will be cheering at the tops of their lungs or forming tunnels with their hands for the girls to run through or creating a high-five line (for the runners).” Wilson noted that the Millersville students can provide a real boost. “A girl who is struggling with motivation will turn the cor-

members of area high school clubs volunteer at the 5K. Johnson shared that GOTR staff members are pleased to welcome the new team from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club to the program. “We are so excited to be branching out to a nontraditional site,” she stated, noting that the program is always mindful of physical and cognitive disabilities. “We will strive to provide curriculum modifications when needed, and we promise all girls will have a coach who has been trained to understand social context and create positive and inclusive environments and build genuine relationships.” Jennifer West, program director for GOTR Lancaster, expressed gratitude for those who volunteered to lead the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club team. “We have one staff member, one intern, and the father of a girl on another city team who stepped up to coach,” said West. “He saw the need, and we are really excited about that.” Both West and Johnson hope to

see more teams that meet outside the traditional sites take part in the program. “We want to be a reflection of the communities that we’re engaging,” said Johnson. “We invite the community (to let us know) if they have a spot where girls are gathering and want to start a team,” added West. Readers who wish to take part in the run may register via www.gotr lancaster.org/5K. Registration will be discounted through Friday, Nov. 9. Discounts are also offered for running buddies and for children age 8 and under. Each GOTR participant who runs the 5K does so with a running buddy, who must be age 16 or older. Often, the buddy is a family member, but Wilson noted that volunteer running buddies are often needed. Individuals who would like to volunteer to be running buddies may visit www.gotr lancaster.org/5k#show-volunteer. Pictured on front: Girls from

every school district in the county are preparing to take part in the Girls on the Run 5K, which will be held at Millersville University on Nov. 10. The untimed 5K is open to area runners who would like to participate.

Mount Joy Area Historical Society Launches Membership Drive

23rd Silent Samaritan Luncheon Moves To New Location

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society (MJAHS) began conducting a membership drive on Oct. 1 that will continue through Saturday, Dec. 1. Currently, the society has 135 individual members, and the membership committee has set a goal of 500 members. According to MJAHS member Don Zerphey, the mission of the MJAHS is “to seek, preserve, and make available the history of the Mount Joy area.” Many documents, including cemetery records, obituaries, local news articles, artifacts, maps, genealogy books, and other resources are available for the public to view and research. The society also has a large collection of historical photographs and postcards for the community to look through and enjoy. In 2019, the society plans to begin to convert these paper documents to digital format for easier access and to preserve for future generations. MJAHS representatives note that this conversion will take considerable time and money. This fall, the society also plans to open its new addition, the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse,

The Silent Samaritan Luncheon is a fundraiser for the Silent Samaritan Fund, which provides counseling and other services to women who do not have adequate funds to cover the cost, and the Silent Samaritan Endowment, a permanent fund started in 2015 in the names of Silent Samaritan Fund founders Linda Peacock and Alta Landis. The 2018 luncheon will be held at a new location, Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The luncheon has also been scheduled earlier in the month of November than in the past. This year’s event will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, beginning at 11 a.m., and will feature two local women, Manheim Township High School graduate Abby Stewart and her mother, Carol Reichler. The luncheon is open only to women. Stewart and Reichler’s message is titled “The Power of Individuality and Unconditional Love.” The program will focus on the struggles Stewart encountered as a teenager and how she and her mother persevered together.

torical items manufactured or used in the Mount Joy area. While the future of the MJAHS is bright, more members are needed to support its efforts, both financially and in working members. Information stands about the MJAHS and its membership drive will be set up at local businesses throughout the coming weeks and also at Main Street Mount Joy’s Winterfest event on Dec. 1. Interested individuals may also visit www.mountjoyhistory.com to complete an online application. Additionally, hard-copy applications are available at the Mount Joy Area Historical Society Museum, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy, on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and at the monthly meetings held the third Monday of the month from March through November. For continued updates, readers may also visit the “Mount Joy Area Historical Society” page on Facebook.

The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, held at the Lebanon Expo and Fairgrounds on Sept. 21 and 22, concluded with an estimated preliminary total of $420,306. Some of the highlights include the following: a Landis Myers table that sold three times to bring in $4,000; two quilts, “Have a Little Faith” and “Diamond Lite,” were resold for a total of $7,200; a theme basket, “A House Divided,” sold for $560; a copper kettle sold for $400 and a Trek bike for $370 in the pole barn auction; two gold coins sold for $2,600 each in the coin auction; contributions and matching funds totaled $110,000; baked goods sales totaled $10,000; contributions and donations, including an earlier bequest, exceeded $110,000; matching funds totaled $25,000; quilt sales totaled $33,000; and food sales generated nearly $34,000. The auction, the largest of its type in the world, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year.

which is a completely renovated 1842 one-room schoolhouse. Renovating the building has been a five-year project with generous support from the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center; the Clarence Schock Foundation; Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.; and many other financial and in-kind contributions from individuals and local businesses. The schoolhouse will become the society’s regular meeting room for monthly programs and eventually will be available for other community needs. Once the schoolhouse is occupied and in use for meetings, the former church that serves as the society’s current museum at 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy, will be redesigned to accommodate the new Clarence Schock Foundation artifacts. New showcases will be needed to house and display these artifacts, as well as the society’s large collection of his-

understand more clearly how much they will pay for college. With the introduction of several new business and engineering programs and master’s degrees; the college’s four-year graduation guarantee; construction of the Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness, and Well-being; and new housing options, Strikwerda believes that the timing is right to make tuition more transparent. The Tuition Transparency initiative is part of the college’s new “You-Minded marketing campaign, which began in mid-September. Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, has announced plans to lower tuition 32 percent, to $32,000, for the 2019-20 academic year. To this point, many colleges, Elizabethtown included, subscribed to a high tuition discount pricing model, meaning that significant financial aid is awarded to students as a means of offsetting the high cost of college tuition. While some students and their families appreciate large financial aid awards, others may not know that they are eligible for financial aid or do not understand how financial aid structuring works. In the past year, president Carl Strikwerda, the college’s senior staff, and its board of trustees evaluated options for making tuition easier to understand. They centered on Tuition Transparency because it places easy-tograsp numbers right up front, so students and their families can

campus. The current facility, Thompson Gym, was built in 1968, and it originally supported 10 teams, 200 athletes, and 1,442 students. Today it supports 22 teams, 400-plus athletes, and 1,636 students. The entire project is expected to cost $3.7 million and add several new jobs at the college.

Landis Valley Plans Spooky Event Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, will hold the Haunted Landis Valley Tea and Tour on Saturday, Oct. 27. Valley House Hotel. The tea will feature scones, soup, sandwiches, and a dessert. Separate costs have been set for adults, for children age 12 and under, and for Landis Valley Associates members. COBYS Holds Fundraiser The 22nd annual COBYS Bike and Hike took place on Sept. 9 in downtown Lititz. The event drew more than 200 supporters and donors, and a new income record of more than $141,000 was raised for COBYS ministries. The increase in income marked the 20th consecutive year of growth for COBYS’ signature fundraiser. Since its inception, the Bike and Hike has raised more than $1.4 million for COBYS ministries. In addition to the walk, the event usually includes two bicycle rides and a motorcycle ride, all staged from the pavilion at the Lititz Church of the Brethren. The rides were canceled due to a flood advisory, and the event was moved inside to the church fellowship hall. A number of would-be riders walked instead or came to donate and pick up a T-shirt. In addition to 210 walkers, many others stopped in for fellowship and ice cream or to bid on the silent auction that ran throughout the afternoon. Total attendance was estimated at 350. opening ceremonies and introduced the Heinaman family of West Hempfield Township. Ryan and Nicole Heinaman shared the story of their 6-year-old son’s heart defect diagnosis. Ryan and Nicole expected to receive great news about their healthy baby boy during their 20-week ultrasound. When doctors discovered that the baby had a two-vessel cord, they suggested that the Heinamans get more frequent ultrasounds. During an ultrasound at seven months, doctors detected something wrong with their baby’s heart and referred them for additional testing by a pediatric cardiologist. The results were inconclusive, but doctors wanted to follow up after the baby was born. Tyler Heinaman was born in June 2012 and seemed to be healthy and normal. The Heinamans followed up with the pediatric cardiologist two weeks

born with a condition called coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. His heart defect was severe, and he needed surgery to correct it right away. He was flown to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., where he received surgery five days later. Tyler will still need to be monitored by cardiologists to ensure that the surgical repairs adapt to his growing heart and body, but today he can live a normal life with no restrictions. At the Heart Walk, Tyler and his family led the walkers out of the stadium to kick off the walk. Walkers returned to the stadium to learn the winners of second annual bicycle giveaway drawing sponsored by UPMC Pinnacle, featuring 12 bikes donated by the hospital’s physicians, staff and teams. The walk was preceded by a high-energy warmup led

Locker Captures Etown’s First League XC Title by Eric Pyles

The Elizabethtown cross country team made their annual October trip to Ephrata for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship meet and boy what a doozy. Katie Locker became the first Elizabethtown runner, male or female, to capture the league title while leading the Lady Bears to their second straight, second place finish. Locker nipped Cedar Crest’s Gwyneth Young by four seconds, 18:41.6 to 18:45.8, making her winning move in the exact spot she and head coach Mark Gallagher discussed, with about 150 meters remaining in the 3.1-mile race. Locker was joined at the top by her fellow Section One All-Stars, Cat Shontz and Madeline Quinn. The trio was unable to maintain their top three sweep pace from the regular season but came pretty close. Shontz was the third runner across the finish line, picking up the day’s bronze medal as well as an L-L medal for time of 18:57.50. Quinn was the next runner to finish, taking fourth with a time of 19:20. Elizabethtown picked up one last league medal run from freshman Sierra Kapcsos who finished with a time of 20:47.60, good enough for 24th place. Jessie Lloyd completed the scoring five for E-town, taking 86th with a time of 23:02.60.

E-town’s Katie Locker runs to an 18:41.6 time to win the Lancaster-Lebanon League Girls Championship at Ephrata Middle School last Tuesday.

“We knew going into the meet that we had three of the best girls in the League, but also knew that there were several other outstanding runners in the race,” said Gallagher, “A lot would come down to who had the best race that day.” The boy’s team, with only two returning runners from last year’s league meet squad, finished ninth in the team standings, their 262 points

falling just short of eighth place Penn Manor’s 261 and seventh place Cocalico’s 259. All five scorers for Elizabethtown finished in a 20-second burst led by Alex Hartman and his 45th place run of 17:47.80. Nathan Johnson was two seconds and two places slower thanks to his 17:49.70. Jesse Myers, who picked up a second team Section One All-Star nod for his regular season work, finished 50th with a time of 17:52.10. Nat McCloud was the final Bear to crack the 18-minute barrier, his 17:59.10 good enough for 58th on the day. Garrick English rounded out Elizabethtown’s top five, taking 64th with a time of 18:07.60. The Bears will lace them up this Saturday for the District 3 Championship Meet to be held at Big Spring High School. FOOTBALL Sometimes in the world of sports you come across a game that tosses conventional wisdom out the window and leaves fans scratching their head. Such was the case last Friday when the E-town Bears battled the Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers. L-S eked out a 20-13 victory, pleasing their homecoming crowd while leaving the Bear faithful left to ponder what could have been. The Bears came into the contest averaging 380 yards of offense while riding a three-game winning streak. That offensive output helped push E-town to the outer fringes of the District

3-5A playoffs where they hoped to remain after their tangle with LampeterStrasburg but the Pioneer defense had other ideas. L-S limited Elizabethtown trigger man and L-L passing leader, Cole Patrick, to 168 yards through the air while more doubling his interception total, picking the senior signal caller three times. The L-S defense also held the Bears to a mere one-yard rushing thanks to the six sacks of Patrick. Meanwhile the Elizabethtown defense could not stop Pioneers QB Joey McTaggart. The sophomore accounted for 151 of LampeterStrasburg’s 198 yards of offense with 114 yards and all three L-S scores coming via his legs. McTaggart’s stellar evening kicked off with a 10-yard TD that accounted for the game’s only first quarter points. Elizabethtown did manage a rebuttal in the form of a 10-point second quarter that sent them into the locker room holding a 10-7 lead. Cade Denlinger put the Bears on the board with a 38-yard field goal early in the second. E-town’s offensive high point came later in the quarter when Patrick hit Alex Diahn (nine catches, 114 yards) for a 45-yard score. Denlinger’s extra point made it 10-7. McTaggart struck again in the third quarter. This time scoring from three yards out, moving LampeterStrasburg back in front 13-10 after the failed two-point try. Denlinger picked up his second field goal of the game

later in the third, this one from 28-yards, knotting the game at 13-13. McTaggart’s final strike came with about four minutes remaining in the contest. The nine-yard rumble and ensuing Seth Beers PAT made it 20-13 where it would remain. The Bears look to hang onto their 5A playoff berth with a regular season finale opposite fellow 5-4 club Conestoga Valley. Kick-off is set for 7pm this Friday. VOLLEYBALL There is never a good time to find yourself in the middle of a losing streak. Unfortunately, the E-town Lady Bear volleyball team finds themselves in the middle of a three game slide

right as the postseason is kicking off. In fact, the final loss in the threegame slip was the first game of what Elizabethtown hopes will be a long post-season run. The Lady Bears were bounced from the LancasterLebanon League Tournament on Saturday October 20th via a 3-1 loss to Manheim Township. Township kept E-town off balance throughout, leading to wins of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-22. The Lady Bears did manage to avoid the sweep with a 25-19 game three victory. Julia Rathsam continued collecting assists, finishing with 24, while both Sydney Stewart and Kristin Geesey finished See E-town pg 14

Lady Chargers Enter Playoffs With 16-1 Record The last three regular season games are in the books for the Lady Chargers, which meant an additional trio of victories to accrue an overall record of 16-1 headed into the post season. Wrapping up their regular season schedule with a home court clash against Dayspring Christian last Friday, the Lady Chargers came out on top after three (25-14, 25-13, 25-19). “The girls came pumped tonight, and the energy could be felt prior to the game,” celebrated head coach Kate Ferrari after the sweep. “The girls

were able to focus and get a good lead in the first set.” Contributing to that excitement from the start, Brie Lehman stepped up with a block to register the very first point of the contest, setting the tone for the Charger triumph. Molly Bert and Haley Witmer provided four aces apiece to keep the Dayspring defensive line scrambling. Witmer also offered 18 assists and Grace Hilsher was there to finish attacks with six kills. Defensively, Hilsher and Kara Locker supplied six digs apiece and Locker added a block to the effort. “In the end, I am so proud of their

efforts, not only tonight, but throughout the season,” praised Ferrari. The night before, the Chargers visited Fairfield High School and again took the contest in straight sets (25-14, 25-21, 25-20). Witmer had an outstanding all-around game dishing out 7 aces, 23 assists, and 12 digs. “I think one of the greatest highlights was Haley’s ability to mix up the offense. She had a great setter/hitter connection with all of our hitters,”

elaborated Ferrari. “Being able to move the sets around to various places makes our offense more dynamic.” Kami Mummau and Locker were a tandem offensive force, trading off kills and racking up nine apiece. Hilsher matched Witmer’s ace count, firing over seven of her own to further spark the Charger offense. first set and never looked back, winning (25-2, 25-10, 25-12). Witmer was nearly unstoppable from the service line, going on an opening run that secured all but two of the Chargers first set points. Witmer amassed a total of 19 aces, 9 setter assists, and 5 digs. Kami Mummau and Kara Locker combined for six kills apiece.

The lopsided contest allowed the MC underclassmen plenty of court time, gaining valuable experience in the win. “Haley [Witmer] was a strong serving force, and freshmen Kacy Robinson and Grace Elder stepped up and made some good plays,” noted Ferrari. See Chargers pg 14

Ashley NyeSmith added 15 digs while Locker chipped in with nine kills and Stewart five aces. Rathsam and Locker both added two blocks while Kimbark had two aces. NyeSmith tallied 12 digs while Kristin Geesey added six kills. The Lady Bears final win of the regular season came on October 15th when they topped Ephrata by a 3-0 count. Rathsam led the way with 19 assists and 13 digs leading to wins of 26-24, 25-18 and 25-20. THOMAS W. FLECKENSTEIN Attorney At Law (717) 333-4053 301 Linden St., Unit 5 Ste. 305, Columbia, PA 17512 www.FleckensteinPALaw.com

The Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) FFA Chapter held officer elections for the 2018-19 school year on Sept. 12. The 2017-18 treasurer, Caitlyn Schiewe, presided over the elections as the representative from her retiring officer team. The newly elected officer team is as follows: Erica Castetter as president, Destiney Lundy as vice president, Maya Pieters as secretary, Mya Swift as treasurer, and Chloe Masters as reporter. LCCTC FFA members interested in running for an office completed an application and were interviewed by a nominating committee, which was a panel of three individuals involved with agriculture. These industry partners were all members of FFA during their time in high school, and they recommended the slate of officers after the interview process. Their recommendation was then voted on and passed by LCCTC FFA members. The chapter was scheduled to

hold its first meeting of the school year on Sept. 17 to develop a program of activities and assign all of the members to committees. This year, the LCCTC FFA plans to attend several local fairs and leadership conferences. The chapter intends to hold fundraising events, participate in community service work, and plan the annual community Fun Fair at school in May. The first community service project will be a blanket drive in memory of Schiewe’s younger brother, Zane Witmer, who passed away while the family was vacationing in Florida. New blankets may be dropped off at the Willow Street campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. For more information about the blanket drive, readers may visit www.Blankets4Zane.org. All of the members of the LCCTC FFA Chapter are enrolled in the Animal Production Science and Technology Program at the Willow Street campus of the LCCTC. For

“The Hardened Heart” from pg 1 the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV). David, who was a graduate of the York Academy of Art, was working on the plaster of Paris decorations that are part of the “Love” painting when he created his first hardened heart. “He had excess plaster, and he was just throwing it in a candy box,” explained Patricia. “When he tore the (box) away, he (noticed) the texture (of the heart). He thought it had character, and he called it the hardened heart.” David served as director of education for the Bradley Academy of Visual Arts and fine art department chair for Antonelli Institute of Art and Photography of York. His work has been displayed at Penn State University campuses and the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic in New York City, among many other locations. Readers who would like to know more about the artist and his work may visit www.davidleesestudio.com. More information about The E may be found at https://emeralde.org.

round opening in it. Each heart is painted and coated with varnish. Coupled with another piece titled “Love,” which he completed in 2013, David’s work forms a statement about the ways domestic violence and sexual assault can scar hearts. The “Love” painting, which is 88 by 43 inches, appears to be an ode to the motifs of love, but when one looks closely, the border contains statistics about domestic violence against women, sexual assault, teenage pregnancy, and divorce rates, exposing the truth that can be behind the myth. During the exhibit, community members are invited to visit The E and have a photo taken with posters available near the exhibit. One is of a blue heart that reads “NO MORE hardened hearts from sexual assault,” and the other is purple and reads “NO MORE hardened hearts from domestic violence.” Photos may be shared to social media with the hashtag #nomorehardenedhearts. The posters are for sale, and half of the proceeds from each poster sold will be given to

the wall looking for the heart that bears the color and message they associate with their own. “Life’s experiences give us each a hardened heart,” said Patricia Leese, widow of David Leese, the artist who created the hearts. “Some (experiences) are negative, but some (hearts) rise above,” added Patricia. “You get knocked down, but you get back up and see life differently.” David was both clever and creative in crafting each of the nearly 40 heart prints in the gallery. “The broken heart is actually two pieces that come together, even part of one of the letters (is split),” pointed out Patricia. Two original plaster of Paris sculptures - “Melancholy Heart” and “Young at Heart” - are part of the exhibit to give viewers a threedimensional understanding of David’s creations. “David designed the lettering for a stencil (depending on the subject) of the heart,” explained Patricia, who noted that the cold heart bears images reminiscent of icicles on its surface, the wounded heart bears a gash, and the “hole in my heart” design has a small,

Boys And Girls Club To Host GOTR Team Girls on the Run (GOTR) is partnering with the Boys and Girls Club to launch its first-ever thirdthrough fifth-grade team at its clubhouse this fall. By hosting a team at the Boys and Girls Club, GOTR is acting on its commitment to ensure that its programs are accessible to anyone who wants to participate. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological, and physical competencies to successfully navigate life experiences. Teams of 15 girls from third through eighth grades meet after school to learn critical life skills and build physical fitness. The culminating event is a celebratory 5K, which the girls complete with an adult running buddy. This season, 800 girls on 61 teams ranging in ages from 8 to 14 are participating in the 10-week program. The girls on these teams will learn about self-esteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals through a curriculum that combines experiential games with physical activity to address the whole girl’s health: physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual. Hundreds of volunteer coaches lead the curriculum. The goal is to provide access by ensuring GOTR is available where girls gather, in their community or school. GOTR is mindful of girls with physical and cognitive disabilities and strives to provide curriculum modifications when needed. All girls will have a coach who has been trained to understand social context, create positive inclusive environments, and build genuine relationships. GOTR is currently recruiting coaches who introduce diversity to the coaching team. Readers may visit the website for more information or contact Jennifer West at jwest@gotrlancaster.org. The season-culminating 5K event is open to anyone who wants to run or walk. The Girls on the Run 5K will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 9 a.m. To register as an individual or a team of five or more people or to volunteer, readers may visit www.gotrlancaster.org/5K.
