GEARS Will Hold Reverse Holiday Parade BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen it comes to its annual holiday parade, GEARS is getting creative. This year’s event, called the Jingle Bell Drive, will be a “reverse parade, held Saturday, Dec. 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. It will begin at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., and end in the parking lot of Elizabethtown Brethen in Christ (BIC) Church, 996 E. High St. The parade committee is accepting applications for parade participants. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Nov. 10. To apply, readers may call 717-367-0355 or email Nate Diegel at natediegel@getintogears.org. The idea for the parade came after a brainstorming session for what to do to replace the traditional event, said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS.
treats or money to create the bags. At the end of the parade, Santa and Mrs. Claus will greet attendees from a safe distance, and children will have a chance to send a letter to Santa in a drop box. “If they would like a return letter, they can put a self-addressed, stamped envelope with their letter, and our Santa will hand-write a letter back to them, Eberly said. She encourages parade goers to get into the spirit of the event by decorating their cars as well, as long as all decorations are road safe. “ We are going to have fire police on site, and the Rotary Club will be there to direct people through, Eberly said. “We want people to be patient, be courteous, and, most importantly, to enjoy the parade.

“We still want this to look like a parade, Eberly said. “We want people to decorate their element just like they would if it were a float. Entry in the parade is free. Awards will be presented for Best of Show, Nonprofit Winner and For-Profit Winner. Voting will be conducted through the GEARS Facebook page. Attendance at the parade is by donation to GEARS to cover costs associated with the event. “ We are excited to try this because we were trying to come up with stuff to give people who still want to participate in events, Eberly said. “We’re not going to let anybody get out of their car as they go through. We’re trying to have as little exposure to other people as possible. She said she hopes to give out goodie bags to all attendees, and she is looking for donations of

For the reverse parade, displays will be stationed at the fairgrounds and in the church parking lot, and cars will drive through the parade. “We met and walked through the route, and we think we can fit up to 50 elements in the area and still be socially distanced, Eberly noted. Doing the parade this way not only makes it a safer event, but also opens up participation to a wider range of groups, she said. “In the past, you had to have a way to pull your element through the route, like a truck or a car, or you were walking the whole distance, she explained. “For this year, you can literally just have a canopy and set up a nice element for people to see as they drive by. Although the logistics of the parade have changed, the feel of the event will be the same, she noted.
According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever. As the editor of Where & When Pennsylvania, a publication of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), I quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth. That’s why we’re launching a new series in our community papers called EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA. Each month we’ll feature a town in our coverage area, as well as a destination somewhere in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we hope to show that you don’t have to travel far to find great restaurants, unique shops, amazing outdoor locations, and world-class historical sites.

Take a train trip through the Pocono Mountains on the Historic Stourbridge Line, visit the Jimmy Stewart Museum and the iconic actor’s hometown, see the amazing architectural feats of Frank Lloyd Wright, and hear the distinctive bugle call of a bull elk in Pennsylvania’s northwest. There are so many fascinating destinations to be discovered across town and across Pennsylvania. Our first highlighted destination will be Jim Thorpe; look for the article in your mailbox in early November.

ONE LITTLE FLU SHOT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
Protect yourself and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

Pauline H. Engle, Co-Founder Of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue See Remembering pg 7

After the game, the message would have changed to ‘Thanks for watching the Judd Novak and Owen Sensenig show.’ The Baron duo went off with Novak taking part in all seven Baron scores, including four to Sensenig, during the 51-14 Central victory. Elizabethtown was powerless to stop Novak, who completed 11-of-16 passes for 354 yards and six scores starting with an 89yarder to Sensenig in the first quarter. E-town was able to offset Novak’s next TD, a 68-yard strike to Wes Borden, with a six-yard Riley Drager (14 carries - 54 yards) score but Central was on top 14-7 and starting to pick up momentum. That Baron push accelerated in the second quarter with Novak and Sensenig hooking up for two more scores, one from 44 yards and the second from 19 yards. The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society recently announced the National Park Service (NPS) has recognized the Native American heritage of the Haldeman Mansion’s property in Bainbridge and three other properties in its vicinity. On May 28, NPS placed these properties on the National Register of Historic Places under the designation the Locust Grove Archaeological District. The district is an ensemble of archeological sites representing what is known as a “persistent place,” that is, a location that attracts long-term, repeated uses. The factors that made this setting attractive were fertile and well-drained high river terraces near the mouth of Conoy Creek and the area’s being a nexus of lines of communication and travel. It offered land routes in the cardinal directions and allowed movement by canoe up

and down the river. This was a prime location for camps and hamlets of earlier periods, from the first settlers of the Late Pleistocene epoch through the Middle Woodland period, as well as the inhabitants of the local area in the post-European contact and modern eras. There are also sites near the district with Paleoindian components. The district’s known Native American settlements span the Late Prehistoric/Protohistoric/Early Historic periods (circa A.D. 1250-1750). Here there were repeated settlements by peoples of the Shenks Ferry, Luray, and Susquehannock traditions, as well as early historic refugee groups like the Conoy (Piscataway) who had migrated to the area under pressure from European settlement and related economic and political forces.

Remembering from pg 3 their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She
was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, rela-
tionships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching
Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and

now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister. Pauline H. Engle
NPS from pg 6 The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society said the Locust Grove Archaeological District is notable in the National Register of Historic Places because it documents a broad time span, contributes resources in an archaeological district, and reflects a wide range of local and immigrant cultures. Two of the sites, Conoy Town and its cemetery, appear to be nationally significant relating to the theme of the European contact period’s interactions in the northeast. The latter are recognized by a nearby Pennsylvania Historical Marker along Route 441.
The sequence of settlements documents the transition from Native American communities based on incipient agriculture and settled village life to the peoples who struggled to come to terms with the effects of disease, depopulation, conflict, and forced migrations in the 16th through 18th centuries. It illustrates the transition in settlement patterns from dispersed, undefended hamlets to larger, permanent fortified villages that occurred prior to European contact, as populations grew and resource competition led to conflict.

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

The district overlaps Haldeman Mansion proper, which was placed on the National Register in 1977 in recognition of its Colonial, Early American, and Scientific Heritages. The Scientific Heritage is recognized by a Pennsylvania Historical Marker along Route 441.
