MCCS To Stage “The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe” By Chelsea Peifer
Students at Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS) will present “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” in the school gymnasium, 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, at 7 p.m., with an additional matinee performance on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. Based on the children’s book written in 1950 by C.S. Lewis, the plot revolves around the four Pevensie siblings: Lucy, played by Claire Hixon; Edmund, played by Malachi Shenk; Susan, played by Alana Kelley; and Peter, played by Samuel Dougherty. The children have been removed from London following a wartime evacuation to the large, countryside home of a friend of their parents. Lucy, the youngest sibling, opens a wardrobe to discover the fantasyland of
Narnia, where it is always winter, but never Christmas. “(Lucy) is very adventurous, and she loves all her siblings,” said Claire. “She’s not afraid to do anything and will go anywhere to help anybody.” Lucy’s siblings join her on subsequent visits to Narnia and encounter mythical creatures including a White Witch - portrayed by Brynne Smith who rules the land instead of the rightful king, Aslan the Lion, portrayed by Austin Shaeffer. A battle ensues as the children adventure with Aslan and other creatures to restore Narnia to its proper ruler. “I like how Aslan has authority and the other creatures look up to him,” Austin said. “One thing I like about Peter is that he is always trying to keep track of his siblings. He’s very caring and tries to protect them,” said Samuel. “My See MCCS Play pg 2

On Oct. 21, the Mount Joy Train Station, 25 S. Market St., was officially dedicated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by numerous federal, state, and local officials and community members. Elizabethtown College Theatre will stage William Shakespeare’s classic tale of “Romeo and Juliet,” but the students will be presenting the show with more than one major twist. Director Michael Swanson explained that the setting will not be Italy, but Lancaster; the time period will not be the 1300s, but in the future around 2049; and, perhaps most notably, Romeo - and several other traditionally male roles - will be portrayed by female students. “Last spring we announced that we would have open casting,” said Swanson. All roles would be cast with regard purely to the quality of acting, not gender or race. Swanson said the concept reflects current trends in theater programming but also accommodates the fact that the student body at Elizabethtown College is See “Romeo And Juliet” pg 4

Lou Schmitt, Mount Joy Mayor Tim Bradley; PennDOT Executive Deputy Secretary Yassmin Gramian, Commissioner Dennis Stuckey, Commissioner Craig Lehman, Commissioner Joshua Parsons, and Jennie Granger, PennDOT multimodal transportation deputy secretary.

favorite part about playing him is that I get to tease Edmund, and he is played by a good friend of mine, so that’s a lot of fun.” Kelli Robinson, who is directing the MCCS production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” said that the cast features students in grades six through 12 - a diversity of ages that she appreciates as the students have a chance to learn from and interact with one another. “This show really identifies well with the faith of this school, and because it is an allegory, it is fun to see (the students) make those connections,” stated Robinson. “C.S. Lewis wrote this so that younger kids, when confronted with darker aspects of their faith and life, wouldn’t be as scared,” added Robinson. “It’s definitely going to be a family-friendly show.” Additional members of the cast include Benjamin Gerlach as Mr. Beaver, Katelyn Niedwick as
Mrs. Beaver, Vince Clay as Tumnus, Jordan DeGroft as Fenris Ulf, Kylie Masters as Unicorn, Enya Smith as Centaur, Jackson Mohr as Dwarf, Joshua Humbert as Father Christmas, Alivia Rutt as Elf, and Isabel Robles as White Stag. Avalyn Hostetter, Summer Sturgis, and Kasai Hines will portray Aslan’s followers, and Emma Nicklas, Timothy McKelvey, Aaron Smith, and Bethany Copeland will portray the Witch’s Army. Tickets may be purchased at a discounted rate in advance by calling the school at 717-3671649 or for full price at the door prior to performances. Prices will be discounted for students and senior citizens, and admission is free for children age 3 and younger. approximately two-thirds female. Romeo will be portrayed by Grace Gibson, a senior English literature major from Medford, N.J., with Juliet being played by Delphi Aubry, a sophomore math education major from Mount Joy. “We actually had a fun conversation after auditions and after we found out that we were both being considered for these roles, and we had decided that this (scenario) would be our first choice,” relayed Aubry, who has acted in several Shakespeare productions with The People’s Shakespeare Project and at her alma mater, Lancaster Country Day School. “Probably the hardest thing about playing Juliet is that she’s 14, and throwing myself back into the mindset of a 14-year-old girl isn’t something I ever thought I’d need to do,” Aubry said. Aubry and Gibson believe audiences will be entertained by the fresh spin that the student cast is putting on the tragic tale. “When I tell people, first of all, that I’m playing Romeo, and then that it’s post-apocalyptic, they are definitely intrigued,” said Gibson. The show marks her first time in a lead role, with her past theatrical experience primarily being in musicals. The production will include an elaborate dance scene, with choreography by Kristin Pontz. The cast has also been working with professional stage combat coach Dan Burke in order to perfect the combat scenes in
“Romeo and Juliet.” Performances are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday to Saturday, Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, and Thursday and Friday, Nov. 7 and 8, in the Tempest Theatre at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. An additional 2 p.m. performance is set for Sunday, Nov. 10. To purchase tickets in advance, interested individuals may call 717-361-1160 or email boxoffice@etown.edu. Tickets will also be available to purchase at the box office prior to each performance, while supplies last. The 2019-20 school year marks the last season of an academic Elizabethtown College Theatre, as it was announced in June 2019 that the theater and philosophy majors offered at the school would be phased out. Swanson said the future of the theater program, as far as student productions as extracurricular, is unclear. The final academic theater season will also include the Etown Shorts Fest VIII, with performances set to begin at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 and 23, in Tempest Theatre. Those performances will be focused on experiment and education in a group of short plays directed by theater students. “Silent Sky,” a play by Lauren Gunderson, will round out the season with performances on select dates from April 16 to 26, 2020. Glossbrenner UMC To Host Country Fair And Market
By Chelsea Peifer
Glossbrenner United Methodist Church (UMC), 713 Church St., Mount Joy, will host its annual Country Fair and Market from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. A chicken potpie dinner will be served on Nov. 1. The meals, which are available for a set fee, include homemade chicken potpie, coleslaw, applesauce, a roll and butter, and a beverage. Takeout meals will also be available. “We get a lot of great comments on our potpie,” shared Marcia Brooks, who is a member of Glossbrenner’s Caring Hands and Hearts outreach group that organizes the annual event. On both days, beef vegetable soup will be available to purchase by the
quart while supplies last. Apple dumplings and sugar-free apple dumplings, along with a variety of other homemade baked goods, will be available to purchase on both days, too. On Nov. 2, hamburger barbecue sandwiches and hot dogs will be on the lunch menu, along with homemade chicken corn soup, beef vegetable soup, snacks, and beverages. Hot dogs will be free for children age 12 and under. A crafting group meets throughout the year to create items that will be available to purchase at the Country Fair and Market, including book angels, gnomes, snowmen, ornaments, holiday items, purses, dog and cat toys, and more. Items donated by the congregation create an extensive indoor yard sale that organizers say offers
something for everyone. The yard sale items are available to purchase by donation. Proceeds from the Country Fair and Market are used by Caring Hands and Hearts for mission and outreach efforts. Over the past year the group donated toward Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS), the Mount Joy Food Bank, the Mount Joy Furniture Bank, New Life for Girls, UMC camps, a prison ministry, and other nonprofit organizations. Funds were also used to provide assistance to local families in need. Glossbrenner UMC has Sunday worship services at 9:30 a.m., with Sunday school at 10:45 a.m. Nursery care is available during the worship services. For more information, readers may visit http://gumcmj.net or call 717-653-5683.

St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, invites the community to be part of a special day on Sunday, Nov. 3. The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a service that combines both traditional and contemporary elements. The church’s new worship leader, Meghan Brenneman, and its new organist, Michael Kohler, will be featured during the service. The service that morning will include the rededication of the bell tower, the remembrance of the saints, and Communion that is open to all. Work was done on the bell tower between Labor Day and the middle of December in 2018
to restore the tower to its condition when it was built in 1924. The community will be called to service with the tolling of the bell, which was last rung in 2001. A Ministry Fair will take place in the fellowship hall from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will offer an opportunity to see all the ministries that St. Mark’s offers, such as Care Ministries, opportunities for children and youths, dinners, and more, and attendees will have a chance to participate in these community-focused programs. The church facilities will be open for tours during the fair. Entry to the church is from the large parking lot behind the building.

Grace Community Fellowship Church of Manheim, 1483 N. Colebrook Road, recently welcomed Eldrick Lal as its full-time pastor. Lal was officially installed as pastor during a worship service on Aug. 18. Former lead pastor Dennis Andrews, who served at the church for 18 years, prayed for Lal during the service and symbolically passed the reins over to him. Lal served as an associate pastor at Philadelphia Church in Seattle for 10 years prior to accepting the position as pastor at Grace Community Fellowship Church of Manheim. “It has been a wonderful journey of faith, trust, and prayer. It is a journey that my wife and I prayed and fasted about,” shared Lal. “When I came here in May (to interview), I felt in my heart that I was called here.” Born in Pakistan, Lal spent most of his childhood in Libya and went to school in Nairobi, Kenya. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Sons of God Bible College in Nairobi and spent 10 years serving as a missionary in Kenya. He and his wife, Rosebell, met in Kenya when she and her family fled from Pakistan due to religious persecution. Married for 18 years, the couple has two children: Ranson, 16, and Hazel, 14. Following his years in Kenya as a missionary, Lal traveled to the United States to earn a Bachelor of Theology in pastoral ministries from Atlanta Bible College in McDonough, Ga. He then went on to earn his Master of Arts in Christian leadership from Cross-National Graduate School of Leadership in Seattle. “I’m thankful that God led me here. It is an honor and a privilege for me,” shared Lal. “The people (at Grace Community Fellowship Church) know the Word of God and are committed to following it. People here are very hospitable and have loved on us. I didn’t feel like an outsider at all in coming here.” Lal noted that he and Andrews

Wolf St., Manheim, on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. Children, youths, and families are invited to drop by before, after, or during trick-or-treating to receive free goodie bags and participate in seasonal activities.
Grace Community Fellowship Church will also host a Thanksgiving service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at the church. “Everyone is welcome here. This is a house of God, and it is for everyone,” emphasized Lal. “People are welcome from any background. I am an approachable person, and I love to learn people’s stories.” Grace Community Fellowship Church offers Sunday school classes for people of all ages at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship services at 10:30 a.m. Fellowship meals take place at noon on the second Sunday of each month. EASD Receives Recognition For Arts Education The Pennsylvania Art Education Association (PAEA) has recognized the Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD) for its commitment to visual arts education with the endorsement Outstanding Visual Arts Community 2019. PAEA aims to empower its members to transform their practices, students, colleagues, and communities to build a strong art education culture and citizenry. Elizabethtown is one of five schools in Lancaster County to receive this distinction. Districts receiving this endorsement demonstrate the importance of their visual arts programs with the following elements: rigorous and inclusive programs - arts programs demon-
strate rigor using standards-based curriculum taught at every level by highly qualified and certified arts educators; highly accessible programs - art programs are offered to all students at every level of education with a sustainable budget for the visual arts; and highly visible programs schools and districts identify their programmatic accomplishments, curriculum for all levels, art staff members, mission statements, and arts events using their school websites and social media. At EASD, arts education courses are available at all grade levels, from kindergarten through 12th grade. The array of visual art courses ranges from graphic design to painting to photogra-
phy and more. In addition, students are engaged in the local art scene, whether it be exhibiting work in local museums or helping with community murals. In November, the Millersville University Office of Visual and Performing Arts will feature an exhibit of Elizabethtown Area High School student artwork as part of the Studio for Students program. The display will be able to be viewed during business hours and during any Winter Center performances. Every fall, countless high school football teams across Pennsylvania start their respective seasons with the same dream, ending their season with a win. Unfortunately, here in PA only six teams actually finish their season with that coveted win in the state championship game. That means, for most, a week 10 victory will have to suffice. Count the Elizabethtown Bears in that second group. After a midseason four-game slide made a postseason berth unlikely, a Week 10 battle with Conestoga Valley settled in as the vehicle to close out the 2019 campaign on a high note. E-town did just that by surviving CV’s late game comeback bid to post a 17-10 win. That sends the Bears into the offseason
with a 4-6 overall record and a 2-4 mark in Section Two action. As the showdown with CV unfolded, it appeared as if Elizabethtown would enjoy whistle to whistle control with the Bears building a 17-0 lead through two quarters. The tide changed at intermission with the Buckskins holding E-town scoreless over the final 24 minutes to bring the crowd to the edge of their seats. With the Bears unable to find their first half groove, CV was able to chip away at E-town’s 17-point lead. That comeback started in the third with a Bradley Stoltzfus TD plunge. The senior QB, who accounted for 204 of Conestoga Valley’s 218 offensive yards, made it a 17-7 game with a one-yard score. Elizabethtown’s offense remained
stuck in neutral, keeping the door open for CV’s comeback bid. That bid inched closer to success when Nathan Heck connected on a 24-yard field goal late in the final stanza, cutting E-town’s lead down to a slim seven points at 17-10. Elizabethtown was unable to keep Conestoga Valley from getting one last crack as the offense continued to sputter but the Bear defense was up to the task and secured the win by forcing a turnover on downs on CV’s final possession. Elizabethtown’s first half success was due largely to Patrick Gilhool and the air attack. The sophomore signal caller piloted the offense with three first half scoring drives and finished the game with 132 yards on 13-of-23 passing with one second quarter TD pass. That was one of six balls that Cole Rice caught, tallying 80 yards with 29 of them coming on that second quarter TD. The successful PAT
kick was Cade Denlinger’s second made kick of the frame, having put E-town up 10-0 with his 44-yard boot earlier in the second quarter. The junior kicker was also successful on his other PAT attempt, making it 7-0 after Leon Allen plowed in from four yards out in the opening stanza. Allen finished with a team high 45 yards on 11 carries and that four-yard score while Cole Hitz matched that 45-yard output but by snagging five Gilhool passes. VOLLEYBALL The calendar shows October but the Elizabethtown girls volleyball team traveled to South Western High School on the 26th hoping for their own version of March Madness. Every year in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at least one lucky 12-seed manages to upset their fifth seeded foe in the opening round of the big dance.

The Bears’ Kallee Locker blocks the shot by Manheim Township’s Emily Stevens during E-town’s 3-0 victory in last Monday’s Lancaster-Lebanon League semifinal match at Garden Spot.
E-town, the 12th seed, entered their District 3-4A first round match opposite fifth seeded Central Dauphin hoping that lady luck would be on their side and provide some October magic. That was not the case as Central Dauphin brought Elizabethtown’s 2019 season to a close with a 3-0 victory that was put together with wins of 25-9, 25-15 and 25-19. Kallee Locker led the way in the loss with nine kills and three blocks. Hayden Calaman added 20 assists while Ashley NyeSmith tacked on nine digs. Despite a regular season that included just four losses Elizabethtown ended the year with a 14-6 record thanks to back-to-back losses to finish the season. A few days prior to that season ending setback to CD the Lady Bears fell to Hempfield in the Lancaster Lebanon League Championship game. “I’m very proud of our team and the fight they put up against a very solid Hempfield team,” said head coach Jenna Griest of her squad’s 3-0 loss. “We knew we’d have to lean heavily on our defense going into this match because Hempfield has so much depth to their attack. We never gave up and made a lot of hustle plays. We’ve got a lot to be proud of to finish league play as the 2019 LL League Runner Up.” The undefeated Lady Black Knights picked up their third straight L-L title and 10th league crown overall by continuing their impressive 2019 run. That run includes 17 straight wins, all by 3-0 sweeps, with the 25-18, 25-18 and 25-17 win over Elizabethtown coming as the most recent. Calaman managed 12 assists with Sydney Stewart collecting six kills and one ace. NyeSmith matched that one ace while adding nine digs while Kierra Hinkle tallied just one ace in the loss. Locker finished with a team high three blocks. The Lady Bears earned that title game spot with a 3-0 win over Manheim Township in the L-L semifinals on October 21st. “The team

played well against Manheim Township,” said Griest. “We served well and were able to get them out of system for most of the match. Township led in the third, which put us under some pressure. But our team handled that pressure with composure and we were able to walk out of the semi-finals with a win.” Stewart led the way in the 25-13, 25-16, 25-23 result, tallying eight kills and two blocks. Locker and Krimson Dougherty matched Stewart’s two blocks to give E-town a three-way tie for team high honors in that department. Hayden Calaman netted a team high 17 assists while her sister, Haylee, led the Lady Bears with five aces. NyeSmith finished with seven digs. SOCCER The postseason was over almost before it began for both the boy’s and girls’ soccer teams. The boy’s team dropped their October 22nd District 3-4A opener to Central Dauphin while the Lady Bears fell to Cumberland Valley in their first-round affair on the same day. Both teams were looking to avenge regular season losses to the same foes but Central Dauphin was able to send the boy’s team into the offseason with a 6-1 loss while the girl’s team dropped their rematch with CV by a 4-0 final. Despite ending up on the wrong side of their respective finals both clubs can take solace in their losses none the less. For the Lady Bears, Cumberland Valley is the defending 4A champ in District 3 and came into the game as the top seed in this year’s 4A bracket. On the boy’s side the Bears fell to the third seeded Rams who began the season 0-1-1 then ripped off 17 straight wins that moved to 18 with the win over Elizabethtown. JJ Oberholtzer had six saves in the boy’s loss while Katlyn Snyder finished the Lady Bears’ loss with 13 saves. Caleb Gerber, with help from See E-town pg 14

Lady Chargers Cap Season at 10-7-2
That’s a wrap for the girls’ soccer season, one that included a bit of everything; highs and lows, injuries and comebacks, lessons and leadership, culminating in an overall 10-7-2 record. Knocked out of the District III playoffs after succumbing to a 6-0 loss to Fairfield, the Lady Chargers hung up
achieving more than just a winning record. “Through our wins and loses they have encouraged each other, lifted each other up, and graciously accepted instruction,” described head coach Kim Schmitkons. “They have learned to endure setbacks and fight through challenges without getting discouraged, always

the 2019 season due to injury, but there was no doubt she was back on Monday with a goal in mind-three actually. Martin scored all three MC goals to secure a hat trick in the win, sparking the momentum shift late in the first half with her first successful strike to get the Chargers on the board 2-1. Most teams don’t relish the thought of trailing 2-0 to open a
contest, but the MC team seems to thrive on the it; overcoming deficits in five of their ten triumphs this season. “Again, I was pleased that the girls didn’t hang their heads after being down two goals,” credited Schmitkons. “Once we got going, everyone was playing their best, and at the half they unanimously believed they could win the game.”
Believing is one thing; digging deep enough to make it happen is another, and the equalizer didn’t come until there was less than 10 minutes left in regulation. This time, Martin shook off her defender on the left wing with some quick footwork outside the 18 before squaring up to deliver a shot into the far side upper 90. See Chargers pg 14

CROSS COUNTRY District 3’s annual cross-country invasion of Newville took place on October 26th with over 1,000 runners descending on Big Spring High School for the 2019 District 3 Championship Meet. The Bears represented Elizabethtown well, collecting six top 100 finishes that included two top 20 medals. Add it all up and it led to a 22nd place team finish for the boy’s and a
12th place team finish for the girls. Katie Locker and Madeline Quinn were the two medalists for E-town. Locker finished the district course in 18:52.40, good enough for 8th place and a fourth straight berth in the PIAA Championship race. Quinn will be making her third PIAA appearance thanks to a 19th place run of 19:22.80. Sierra Kapcsos, Olivia Shenk and Katie Hook rounded out the E-town top five on the day. Chargers from pg 13 The Beavers were not without opportunity, powering a clear shot on goal as the minutes waned, but MC keeper Marlie Neidwick’s focus was unwavering in the final minutes, scooping up a total of five saves as the Charger squad forced overtime. “Marlie had some really big saves, especially towards the end when she made two diving saves in the mud,” Schmitkons pointed out. They give their best in every situation,” concluded Try Hockey for Free Day Coming to Schmitkons. Assistant coach Allie Schellin refLancaster Ice Rink Nov. 9th
erenced II Timothy 4:7 to describe the no-quit attitude of the squad who was forced to play multiple games down in numbers. The verse states, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” While the Scripture is referring to a spiritual race, the MC squad was able to implement the characteristics described by playing with perseverance and a gracious attitude when facing opposition. BOYS’ SOCCER Boys’ soccer closed the books on their historic 2019 season, closing the year with a 2-1 loss to Fairfield coming in round one of District playoffs. “Couldn’t be more proud of them than I was tonight,” noted head coach Marc Myers after the loss. Fairfield led most of the contest, and went up by two in the second half on a free kick opportunity. MCCS earned one back when freshman Brett Taylor redirected a corner kick from Damian Rutt into the netting, but time expired before they could convert another.
Mount Calvary entered the District tournament fresh off of their championship win in the CCAC conference, claiming the banner for the first time in school history, topping off their action packed 12-4 regular season. “The season is over tonight, but these boys brought MCCS the soccer championship for the first time ever,” praised Myers. “A team that plays with such heart; I can only pray that God can use this season for His glory.” VOLLEYBALL A heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Linville High School brought the Lady Chargers CCAC tournament run to an abrupt halt in last Wednesday’s semifinal. The five-set battle went back-andforth with four of the five sets coming down to two-point differentials (23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-13). Kami Mummau’s 26 kills and pair of aces helped boost the squad to
the first set win, but Linville fired back with a second set win. Kara Locker put up 34 assists, keeping the Chargers in the mix. Defensively Grace Hilsher paced the team with 18 digs, and two blocks from Brie Lehman shifted momentum in Charger favor, holding a 2-1 set advantage after three, but Linville rallied to regain control and claimed the final two. The road to the CCAC title might have been a dead end, but the MC squad isn’t quite done yet. Their regular season performance of 15-2 earned them the second seed in the District III playoffs, and they will kick off that run in a quarterfinal clash against Upper Dauphin on Tuesday, October 29th. “We embrace the positives and learn from the mistakes,” reflected head coach Kate Ferrari hoping to turn the loss into incentive for the teams District run.

Dutch Apple To Stage “Holiday Inn” Irving Berlin’s classic “Holiday Inn” will be presented at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 14, through Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020. Based on the 1942 film starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, “Holiday Inn” tells the tale of Jim as he leaves the bright lights of show business to settle down on a farmhouse in Connecticut and discovers that life just is not the same without a bit of song and dance. When Jim meets a spirited schoolteacher with hidden talent to spare, they turn the farmhouse into a fabulous inn that is only open on the holidays. The show includes classic songs by Berlin, including “Shaking the Blues Away,” “Heat
Wave,” “Blue Skies,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “It’s a Lovely Day Today,” “Easter Parade,” and “White Christmas.” From Thanksgiving to the Fourth of July, “Holiday Inn” features dance numbers, comedy, and a heartwarming story. The color blue About Ikebana lying. with World Day of Bullying Prevention, was chosen because in many cultures blue Residents of Juniper Village at Mount Joy recently gathered to learn about Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. Rather than arranging flowers haphazardly into a bouquet, flowers are arranged symbolically, according to the season of the year. To keep flowers in place, participants used a kenzan, which is a small pin-covered object, upon which stems are pierced for support. Residents participated by selecting which flowers and stems would be used, as well as how to place them on the kenzan. This type of arrangement focuses on balance, with the goal being to display each individual branch, flower, and stem artfully to bring out the inner qualities of the various living materials. Flowers from around Juniper Village were collected to create the arrangements. Residents selected a vase and then filled it with colorful pebbles and seashells. They each added a handful of these objects as they listened to the reading of an article that explained the history and purpose of this style of floral design. Juniper Village at Mount Joy is located at 607 Hearthstone Lane, Mount Joy. For more information, readers may call 717-272-8782 or visit www.junipercommunities.com.

This year’s theme was “Stomp Out Bullying,” and the initiative was designed to bring schools and communities together in a collective effort to put an end to bullying and cyber bullying in local communities. The initiative was also intended to increase awareness of the impact bullying
symbolizes peace. The district strives to provide a school environment where all students feel safe and that is conducive to learning. Through the Leader in Me program, students learn how to develop positive and healthy relationships with their peers and make responsible decisions when it comes to their own behaviors and interactions.
