GEARS Will Hold Reverse Holiday Parade BY CATHY MOLITORIS

hen it comes to its annual holiday parade, GEARS is getting creative. This year’s event, called the Jingle Bell Drive, will be a “reverse parade,” held Saturday, Dec. 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. It will begin at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., and end in the parking lot of Elizabethtown Brethen in Christ (BIC) Church, 996 E. High St.

The parade committee is accepting applications for parade participants. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Nov. 10. To apply, readers may call 717-367-0355 or email Nate Diegel at natediegel@getintogears.org. The idea for the parade came after a brainstorming session for what to do to replace the traditional event, said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS.

Elizabethtown Chamber Will Host Chicken Barbecue BY CATHY MOLITORIS

There is power in a chicken. At least that is how Bob Price feels. Price, executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce, said purchasing a chicken barbecue dinner is a great way to support the community and keep Elizabethtown thriving. “Come out and buy a chicken dinner and support your hometown,” he said. “Support everything the

For Sara Gutshall, the square in Maytown may be small, but it occupies a big space in her heart. “That little square just means the world to me,” said the lifelong Maytown resident. Gutshall, president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809, took that dedication and turned it into a project to not only beautify the square, but also recognize Maytown’s rich history. Earlier this year, Gutshall spearheaded a fundraiser to replace the

It was just really in poor shape.” She noted the idea for repairing the square came to her in a dream after part of the square was destroyed when a car ran into it. “The accident took down light poles and curbing and more, but it

Last year’s GEARS holiday parade featured floats, bands and community groups.

For the reverse parade, displays will be stationed at the fairgrounds and in the church parking lot, and cars will drive through the parade. “We met and walked through the route, and we think we can fit up to 50 elements in the area and still be socially distanced,” Eberly noted. Doing the parade this way not only makes it a safer event, but also opens up participation to a wider range of groups, she said. “In the past, you had to have a way to pull your element through the route, like a truck or a car, or you were walking the whole distance,” she explained. “For this year, you can literally just have a canopy and set up a nice element for people to see as they drive by.” Although the logistics of the parade have changed, the feel of the event will be the same, she noted. “We still want this to look like a parade,” Eberly said. “ We want people to decorate their element just like they would if it were a float.” Entry in the parade is free. Awards will be presented for Best of Show, Nonprofit Winner and

Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & The Asa Packer Mansion stands today as it did when R. tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to

Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to

Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17-room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Remembering Pauline H. Engle, Co-Founder Of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.

Pauline H. Engle

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, cofounded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve greatgrandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, See Remembering pg 3

Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in

Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

five days in mid-September, with bricks supplied by Drohan Brick and Hardscaping in Mount Joy and work completed by Tom Jones Landscape and Lawncare in Marietta. The walkways run east and west on High Street and north and south on River Street, and they feature engraved names of Maytown residents, including veterans from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War, Gutshall said. “I wanted to go with brick for the square because Maytown at one time was the home of a brick manufacturer,” Gutshall said. “We could have replaced the walks with concrete, but bricks are part of our history, and it allowed us to engrave them as well.” Not all of the bricks were engraved at the time of construction. Gutshall said bricks are still available for engraving, and she encourages individuals, organizations and businesses to consider purchasing one. “People could honor their loved one, especially veterans, or they could honor people who lived in Maytown or businesses that were in Maytown,” she suggested. “It’s important for people to know our history.” Brick order forms may be picked up at the Maytown Post Office, 1 W. Dutch Apple To Stage “Elf The Musical” “Elf the Musical,” based on the film “Elf,” will play at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 12, through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021. This musical comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his identity and help New York City remember the true meaning of Christmas. cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to discover his identity. For the second time in his career, Kole Mitchell McKinley will play the part of Buddy the Elf. McKinley is from North Carolina and is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical performance theater. Although new to the Dutch Apple stage, he appeared in Dutch Apple’s virtual cabaret series this spring.

Performances will be on Tuesday through Sunday evenings with selected matinees. There will be separate dinner and show ticket pricing for adults, for students ages 13 to 18 and for children under age 12. Special pricing is available for groups of 16 people or more. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling 717-898-1900, visiting www.DutchApple.com or stopping at the box office at 510 Centerville Road in Lancaster.

Created in 1968, the Governor’s Twenty is a state-level National Guard award presented annually to the top 20 shooters in a state. The top 20 scorers were awarded the embroidered Gov-

Lady Bears Top L-S and Solanco, Now 12-2 BY ERIC PYLES

The old saying goes that when one door closes another one opens. For the Elizabethtown girls’ volleyball team, the door that is closing leads back to the regular season while the one the Lady Bears hope opens leads to the District 3-4A playoffs. E-town shut the door to the regular season with back-toback 3-0 wins over LampeterStrasburg and Solanco. The result is a sparkling 12-2 record that should slot the Lady Bears into the eight spot once the District 3-4A rankings are finalized after October 31st. Unfortunately, that means the district door that opens would lead to a November 5th date with Hempfield

and their sparkling 12-0 record. Elizabethtown closed out the regular season on October 27th with their rescheduled game opposite Solanco, collecting a 30 sweep with wins of 25-7, 25-8 and 25-14. “We needed to get the win to continue to strive to make districts,” said head coach David Pittman. “Fortunately, we had the opportunity to get 12 players into the match and everyone contributed to the win for us.” Those 12 players combined for 13 digs, 17 aces, 28 kills, 25 assists and three blocks with Angela Costa-Ouimet leading the way. The junior finished with a team best 19 assists while adding four aces, three kills, two blocks and two digs. Liz Kerin enjoyed a solid

a l l - a r o u n d g a m e w i t h fo u r kills, three aces, two digs and one block. Sydney Stewart chipped in with a team best seven kills with freshman Hailey Oller collecting five aces, a team best. Kallee Locker and Autumn NyeSmith posted m a t c h i n g fo u r k i l l s g a m e s while Olivia Hauck added three of her own. One night earlier the Lady Bears used wins of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-13 to post another sweep, this one over L-S. “We worked through some new rota-

tions in our hopes for extended season play,” said Pittman of the win. Stewart was at the forefront of this sweep, posting an eight kill, six dig and six ace effort. Locker added seven kills to go with three blocks, one dig and one ace. Paige Horst added a team high nine digs while CostaOuimet, who finished with two aces and one dig, topped the assist column with 17. Kerin rounded out the top performers with three blocks, three kills, two aces and two digs.

GEARS Renovates Hockey Rink GEARS recently renovated the Poplar Street Park roller hockey rink. The project was made possible through a donation from T-Mobile. Improvements included replacing the damaged dasher boards, paneling the exterior sections of the hockey rink, painting interior and exterior areas, power washing the hockey rink and handball courts, repainting existing

hockey lines, laying out and painting badminton/pickleball lines for two courts, painting picnic tables and pruning trees in and around the hockey rink.

Local residents (from left) Glenn “Dodge” Cunningham, Robert Houff, Beth Stauffer and Ross Tredway are now able to play pickleball outdoors at the Poplar Street Park hockey rink, which was recently renovated using a donation from T-Mobile.

Nissley Selected As Portz Scholar Anna Nissley of Elizabethtown, a 2020 graduate of Kutztown University, Kutztown, has been selected by the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) as one of four 2020 Portz Scholars. This national award is given to four students for outstanding undergraduate honors papers. Nissley’s awardwinning, 110-page paper is titled “Stories of the Appalachian Trail.” The aim of Nissley’s project is to question Western conceptualizations of outdoor spaces - in part through the critique of the terms used to refer to land like “wild” versus “developed” - through multi-genre

storytelling ranging from critical analysis to personal narratives and poetry. Nissley graduated summa cum laude from Kutztown University in the spring with two degrees, a Bachelor of Science in English education and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. She also minored in women’s and gender studies. The four Portz Scholars were slated to present their papers in a virtual session as part of the NCHC20 virtual events on Oct. 9. Winners are awarded a $350 stipend and free registration to the virtual events, as well as recognition in the NCHC award ceremony later in the fall.

St. Mark’s Will Offer Free Thanksgiving Meal BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Sixteen years ago, Janet Lehman and her husband found themselves with nowhere to go on Thanksgiving. “Our kids were grown and out of the house and we were alone,” Lehman recalled. “We thought maybe there are other people in the same boat at Thanksgiving.” So the Lehmans decided to hold a community Thanksgiving dinner at their church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy, and the tradition has continued ever since. “That first year, we made about 60 meals,” Lehman said. “Last year, we did about 450 meals. You can see how it’s grown.” This year’s free Thanksgiving Day dinner will be held on Thursday, Nov. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Because of the pandemic, the meal will only be available to go, with curbside pickup behind the church. Some meals will be delivered to the sick and homebound members of the community, Lehman said. The meal will include turkey and gravy, mashed

potatoes, applesauce, cranberry sauce, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls and butter, a vegetable and dessert. “We decided to do it as a pickup-only event this year because we couldn’t do dine-in with all the restrictions, and we still wanted to do something for the community,” Lehman shared. “People appreciate it so much. People need it, and this year maybe even more people need it.” Lehman said many attendees have returned year after year, and people enjoy the meal for many reasons. “We have people who are just lonely and come for the fellowship. We have others who are in need of a meal,” she explained. “Everyone is welcome, no questions asked.” Volunteers are needed on Wednesday, Nov. 25, to help prepare the dinner and on Nov. 26 to package the meals, wash dishes, clean up and deliver meals to sick and homebound. Last year’s event required the efforts of more than 100 volunteers. To volunteer, readers may call Lehman at 717-653-4189 by Saturday, Nov. 21. Reservations are strongly encouraged for the free See St. Mark’s pg 12

Protect P Pr rot otect ec ct yourself your yo urse ur self lf and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

The bazaar is a great way for congregation members to show off their creative talents, said Eshleman, who is a jewelry maker. “We have so many people in our congregation who are really talented. We’re not a large church, but we have people who enjoy getting together and crafting throughout the year, she noted. Eshleman said the bazaar is always well attended, with people who are new each year to regulars who come year after year. “I see a lot of people return each year and they tell me, ‘I always look forward to this bazaar,’ she stated. She encourages anyone looking for unique items to come out and support the church. “There is going to be such a great variety, she said. “If you’re looking for Christmas gifts, or something to satisfy your sweet tooth, or you just want to pick up some soup to go home and have for lunch, you can do that here. For more information on the bazaar or to preorder soup or barbecue for pickup during the bazaar, readers may call the church at 717-426-1884 or visit www.zionmarietta.org.
