Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) had such a successful run with last fall’s student production of “The Man Who Came to Dinner” - including four Apollo Award actor nominations - that co-directors Christine Blaisdell and Jen Rutkowski decided to tackle another comedy written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman this season. EAHS will present “You Can’t Take It With You” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, and at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, in the school auditorium at 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. “We have a very comedic group of kids this year, and we knew they would do well with this show,” remarked Jen Rutkowski. “The strength of this group is really their teamwork. They’re like brothers and sisters. And their hard work ethic and love for theater would be their other claim to fame.” Blaisdell noted that the two seniors in the 18-member
cast, Claire Fritz and Carter Rutkowski, have stepped up to provide phenomenal leadership to the entire group. “Along with that, we’re seeing all of the underclassmen step up and thrive,” said Blaisdell. Carter will portray grandfather Martin Vanderhof, the eccentric patriarch of the wacky Sycamore family, who are living in New York City in 1936. His easily distracted daughter, Penny Sycamore (Tori Bressler), is a writer and painter married to eternal tinkerer Paul Sycamore (Bryan Murray). “Penny is crazy, but everybody loves her,” remarked Tori. One of the couple’s daughters, Essie Sycamore Carmichael (Emma Buettner), is a goofy candy maker with aspirations of becoming a ballerina, while their other daughter, Alice Sycamore (Claire), works in an office and is the lone strait-laced, “normal” family member. Tony Kirby (Evan Kready) falls in love with Alice and brings his parents - Mr. and Mrs. Kirby (Nick Bettendorf and Keli Georges) - to dinner at the Sycamore family See EAHS Play pg 2

The Bear Creek School recently observed Red Ribbon Week. A variety of special activities took place during the week, including wearing red to school and creating an Act of Kindness banner to demonstrate the students’ commitment to a healthy and safe learning environment. A national event occurring annually during the last full week of October, Red Ribbon Week focuses on educating children about health choices, especially the decision to avoid drugs and alcohol. The Red Ribbon celebration brings millions of people together each year to raise awareness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco, drug and violence prevention; early intervention; and treatment services. Lady Chargers Grab District Three Silver by Leah Sintic
The Lady Chargers are PIAA District III runners up after last Saturday’s 1A championship clash went 3-0 in favor of Lititz Christian. The title match was held November 2nd at Central York, pitting the top two seeds in the district against one another, and though all three sets went to the Eagles, each one came down to the slimmest of margins (3028, 26-24, 25-23). Mount Calvary came out to a shaky start, spotting Lititz seven points before notching one of their own, but the squad rallied for a massive comeback effort. Facing a nine-point deficit of 23-14 midway through the set, Kara Locker stepped up to serve and held on for a seven-point run bringing MC within reach, 23-21. After tying the scoreboard at 24, a series of lead changes delayed either team from closing the set, but eventually the Eagles got ahead by two after extending the game, 30-28. The remaining two sets held a back-and-forth battle, but the Eagles managed to get ahead when it mattered to clinch the win in three. MC’s journey to the championship game included two 3-0 sweeps, easing their way past Millersburg and Upper Dauphin on their way through the bracket. Lititz’s trek to the final included a 3-0 win over Conestoga Christian and a closer 3-2 battle against Dayspring Christian to remain undefeated (18-0) headed into Saturday’s showdown. Thursday’s semifinal was a clash between Mount Calvary, and the three seed, Millersburg, but the lopsided match went entirely in favor of the Chargers, in a swift sweep (25-11, 25-13, 25-19).
“We played smart and didn’t beat ourselves,” noted Locker, who provided 20 assists in the win over Millersburg. “Keeping serves in was a major impact, and if we if we don’t make unforced errors, we are tough to beat.” Defense was a team wide effort with Kacy Robinson, Rachel Green, Molly Bert, and Kami Mummau supplying eight digs apiece, complimented by two blocks from Brie Lehman. Mummau electrified the offense slamming 18 kills and six aces over the net. “They’ve been so good at picking out their strengths from each match and looking to improve on their weaknesses,” praised head coach Kate Ferrari. Earning their appearance in the semifinals required MC to first take down seventh seeded Upper Dauphin in last Tuesday’s quarterfinals. Though the 3-0 outcome was all Chargers, each set held a close battle, with Upper Dauphin just a few steps back (25-22, 25-21, 25-22). Mummau had another all-around great night for the Charger squad, racking up 17 assists, 13 kills, and five aces. Dauphin opened with the upper hand, surging ahead to a 12-8 lead in the initial set, but a service run with MC’s Robinson at the helm gave the Chargers six straight points to flip the script to a 14-12 advantage. Mummau stepped up to serve when the scoreboard was knotted at 22 apiece in the first set, and the MC squad rallied for three consecutive points to claim game one, punctuated by a kill from Locker to garner the 25th point. Set two was all Chargers, with big defensive contributions from Bert, who finished the night with 10 digs.

The Mt. Calvary team finished second in the District Three Class A Tournament after a 3-0 loss to Lititz Christian in the championship final at Central York last Saturday. Members of the team are: front row (from left), Mackenzie Kline, Nessa Fagen, Molly Bert, Lily Shaeffer; middle row, Moko Saeguso, Grace Elder, Grace Hilsher, Kara Locker, and back row, coach Tiann Rutt, Brie Lehman, Kami Mummau, Mia Kraft, Rachel Green, Kacy Robinson, and head coach Kate Ferrari.
Facing elimination in the third, Upper Dauphin put together a rally for an initial 9-6 lead, but the Chargers got things back under control after Bert served for three consecutive Charger points to level the score at nine. An ace from Locker put MC ahead for the final time at 12-11, a lead that was soon extended by a trio of
aces from Mummau that propelled the team to a 20-15 advantage. From there, the squad simply put the finishing touches on the victory. Bert, both a senior and a captain, chimed in with some explanation on the preparation taking place behind the scenes. “Our coaches have been really encouraging us in practices and devotions to pick our heads up when

we’re down and keep pushing,” explained Bert. “That’s what I think pushed us to get these wins.” Their trip to the championship earned them a spot in state playoffs, with the Chargers slated to embark on that challenge in a first-round match on November 5th. “We are headed to the first round of states. Our girls are focused with the goal in mind. They are rising to another level, and that’s pretty awesome to witness,” summarized Ferrari.
SOCCER Both boys and girls soccer teams have concluded their season, but the CCAC all-conference selections were released last week with plenty of Mount Calvary representation. For the girls, the all-conference list included Julia Martin, Naomi Ewing, and Olivia Yordy. On the boys’ side, Damian Rutt was named to the first team, and Harrison Crick, Hansen Crick, and Isaac Grab were awarded second team honors.

VisionCorps received $9,500 from Murray, after Murray’s golf team participated in the Chubb Charity Challenge. The team, composed of Colin Brandt, Joe Kotula, Scott Wengrenovich, and Mitch Thoreson, won the local event for the Philadelphia area. By doing so, the team qualified along with approximately 40 other agencies to participate in the national event in Wisconsin. The team members finished in 18th place and earned $9,500 to donate to the charity of their choice. The Chubb Charity Challenge has resulted in donations to more than 6,000 charities in the past 20 years. This was the first time Murray has entered a team in this event. Kara Newswanger, music director Matt Yutzy, stage manager Brandon Harlee, set and costume designer Sophie Rogers, set designers Daniel Rogers and Jethro Beiler, props coordinator Jalisa Martin, and costume constructor Jessica Zeidler. Yutzy said that B2BD “kind of started by accident.” Yutzy had been teaching a theater class at a small, private school, and when the class got cut, many students were disappointed. She wrote a script for the students to perform outside of school, and that play was performed in 2013 at Hammer Creek Mennonite Church. “The parents and kids loved it so much that we decided to keep doing shows,” said Yutzy. “We love teens, and we love giving them the opportunity to use their talents or discover talents that maybe they didn’t even know they have,” Yutzy shared. “We want to give them a place to be loved and to celebrate their gifts.” “And, like our name says, we’re always doing something different,” continued Yutzy. “It’s fun to always try new things.” In 2018, B2BD staged both spring and fall productions, as well as a summer tour of shows at various locations. Applications to join the membership-only dog park can be found at www.dogparkmountjoy.com or picked up at the dog park. Students from Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) have contributed to Dog Park Mount Joy by building a bulletin board, installing a brick patio, installing landscaping, and more under the guidance of LCCTC instructor Aaron Adams. “In this partnership, everyone wins,” remarked McCleary. Dog Park Mount Joy will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Interested individuals may purchase meals to go or opt to dine in with candlelight, music, and top-notch service provided by local Girl Scouts. Each meal will include spaghetti and meatballs, bread, coleslaw or applesauce, a dessert, and a beverage. Separate prices have been set for adults and for children ages 4 to 10. Children age 3 and younger may eat for free. To order tickets, people may visit www.dogparkmountjoy.com or call 717-538-0810. Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present “Thanksgiving Exposed: The True Story of the Pilgrims” on Friday, Nov. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guests will select a specific time for a tour that will take approximately one hour. Drawn from primary sources, “Thanksgiving Exposed” is a live re-enactment of the history of the Pilgrims. The guided tours will take guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ as the focal point for all of history. Guests will then learn about the Magna Carta, the Bible’s translation into English by John Wycliffe, and the Gutenberg Press. “Thanksgiving Exposed” will include a replica of the Wittenberg doors that guests will step through to move into an area focused on the Reformation. After learning about persecution in England and the rise of the Separatists, guests will visit six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. The stations will tell the Pilgrims’ story from their beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland and their voyage to the New World. Finally, guests will learn about how the Pilgrims created their own model of self-government. Dayspring first offered Thanksgiving Exposed in 2002, when the school was located in Lancaster. “Thanksgiving Exposed” is free and open to the public, but reservations are required, and the event is expected to fill. To register, readers may visit www.dayspringchristian.com or call 717-285-2000. Separate from the “Thanksgiving Exposed” event, Dayspring Christian Academy’s Class of 2021 will hold a dinner and soup sale on Nov. 22 across the street from Dayspring at the Mountville Church of the Brethren Church, 60 Clay St. Proceeds will go toward the Class of 2021’s senior class field study to Israel.
