The Maytown Historical Society

By Chelsea Peifer

Armed with the belief that collaborating as a community can often yield far greater results than going at it alone, 10 nonprofit organizations based in the Elizabethtown area have teamed up to present Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary. The event is set to take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, in the gymnasium at Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown. Organizer April Miller, who serves as director of development at MCCS, explained that the event will allow people who would like to support Elizabethtown-area organizations during Lancaster County’s Extraordinary Give on Nov. 16 to make donations in one central location. After noticing

that most of last year’s Extraordinary Give events took place in downtown Lancaster - which can be a bit of a hike for folks living in the northern end of the county - Miller decided to reach out to groups in Elizabethtown to see which, if any, would be interested in collaborating this year. “I thought, ‘ W hy not bring everybody together under one roof?’” recalled Miller. The Extraordinary Give is an annual celebration of giving that enables donations made to any of the participating organizations during a designated 24-hour period to be increased thanks to a stretch pool made possible by sponsoring businesses and organizations. Folks may donate online at www.extragive.org or at the giving stations that will be set up at Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary. See E-town Is Extraordinary pg 8

Inviting the community to Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary are (front, from left) Jen Fontana and April Miller of Mount Calvary Christian School, Aimee Bergen of Hope Within Ministries, Mai-Lynn Sahd of Brittany’s Hope, (back) Peter Graustein of Naaman Center, and Jeff Kime of House on the Rock Ministries. The event will feature free food, live music, children’s activities, door prizes, and giving opportunities from 5 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 16 at Mount Calvary Christian School during the Extraordinary Give.

National Collection Week is set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a distribution center in Baltimore. From there, Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts. “During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves,” shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or (developing) country who may have never received anything like this before.” “For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location,” Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person.” In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoeboxes to

children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year. This was the case with the Rwanda delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipients’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive,” Ward recalled. “The void that was in their eyes becomes this amazing joy. Like we say, it’s the light of Christ that comes in.” One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out to be a soccer goalie, but his family couldn’t afford to buy any,” Ward relayed. “So the gloves turned out to be perfect.” Ward explained that families may use a medium-size shoebox

they already own, purchase a designated Operation Christmas Child box at Hobby Lobby, or contact any of the drop-off locations to see if they have any extra boxes available. Drop-off locations in Lancaster County include the following: LCBC - Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim; Jerusalem Church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim; New Life Church, 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster; Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street; Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland; and Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. To view the times for each location or to find additional drop-off sites in surrounding areas, interested individuals may visit www.samaritanspurse.org/ operation-christmas-child/drop -off-locations/. Additional instructions and suggestions on what to pack in the boxes according to age and gender may also be found at the website. Generally, each box should include one special item, such as a stuffed animal, soccer ball with a pump, or clothing outfit, and then be filled in with other toys, school supplies, and hygiene items.

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present “Thanksgiving Exposed: The True Story of the Pilgrims” on Friday, Nov. 16, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guests will select a specific time for a tour that will take approximately one hour. Drawn from primary sources, “Thanksgiving Exposed” is a live re-enactment of the history of the Pilgrims. The tours will take guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ as the focal point for all of history. Guests will then learn about the Magna Carta, the Bible’s translation into English by John Wycliffe, and the Gutenberg Press. “Thanksgiving Exposed” will include a replica of the Wittenberg doors that guests will step through to move into an area focused on the Reformation. After learning about persecution in England and the rise of the Separatists, guests will be escorted by a guide through six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. The stations will tell the Pilgrims’ story from their beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland and their voyage to the New World. Finally, guests will learn how the Pilgrims created a unique model of self-government. Dayspring first offered Thanksgiving Exposed in 2002, when the school was located in Lancaster. “Thanksgiving Exposed” is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. To register, readers may visit www.dayspringchristian.com or call Dayspring at 717-285-2000.

HOPE Breakfast To Have Dominican Flavor By Ann Mead Ash

When Carley Bilindabagabo, events coordinator with HOPE International, was asked about the speaker for the 2018 HOPE International breakfast, she responded with enthusiasm. “We have someone special this year: Alex Nuñez, president and CEO of Esperanza International, our partner program in the Dominican Republic,” said a smiling Bilindabagabo. The 2018 breakfast will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The Lancaster County Community Foundation will hold the seventh annual Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals may visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from any of 500 local nonprofit organizations, and make an online donation. Thanks to the Community Foundation, the High Foundation, and corporate sponsors, all participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. For example, if an organization receives 3 percent of the total donations raised during the Extraordinary Give, that organization will receive 3 percent of the stretch pool. An additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered throughout the day in the form of Golden Tickets and other incentive structures. New this year, individuals may support their favorite organizations through peer-to-peer fundraising. Individuals may set fundraising goals and share stories and their ExtraGive personal links with their social network to raise support for their chosen organizations on Nov. 16. Community members may become peer-to-peer ExtraGive fundraisers by visiting the aforementioned website, finding the organization they wish to support, and clicking the Fundraise button. Additionally, this year dozens of individuals across Lancaster County will be part of spreading the word about the Extraordinary Give by being part of the Give Fleet. The volunteer driving squad is open to members of the public who would like to promote the Extraordinary Give by applying a specially designed magnet to their personal or business vehicle. Magnets will be available through the Lancaster County Community Foundation. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their own magnet at any time from Saturday, Nov. 10, to Friday, Nov. 16. Any licensed driver is eligible to be part of the Give Fleet and may register to participate at the Extraordinary Give website. On Nov. 16, community members may also support the day of fundraising by attending the Family Give Fest and the ExtraGive Fest. Both events are free and open to the public. The Family Give Fest will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Lancaster Marriott, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster.

Children, parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are invited to participate. The event is designed with preschool and elementary children in mind. Families will be able to learn about causes in Lancaster that impact local families every day, give their thoughts on what is important to them, and share their passion with others. The festival will include interactive learning stations, on-site ExtraGive T-shirt printing, and a family photo station. Steven Courtney will present live music. The ExtraGive Fest will follow from 6 p.m. to midnight on the second and third floors of the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center. Attendees may count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give and attend performances by local and regional bands. ExtraGive Fest will also serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, featuring screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, social media stations for photo opportunities, and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. From 5 p.m. to midnight, the Griest Building in Penn Square will be aglow with a 14-story light show, making it a glowing symbol of the community’s generosity during the Extraordinary Give. The light show will feature changing colors and patterns that ExtraGive Fest attendees may customize by pushing integrated buttons in an interactive experience. The lights’ responses to the individuals’ actions are meant to create a metaphorical example of how each individual action may impact the community. The record-breaking 2017 Extraordinary Give generated a total of $8.6 million for 464 nonprofit organizations in a single day. More than $31 million has been generated since the creation of the Extraordinary Give in 2012. For more information about the 2018 Extraordinary Give, including a list of participating organizations, readers may visit www.ExtraGive.org. The event’s purpose is to raise funds for 500 local nonprofit organizations.

The American Heart Association recently dedicated a second blood pressure kiosk in Lancaster thanks to support from the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation and matching funds from CVS Health. Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation and representatives from the American Heart Association were on hand at Bright Side Opportunities Center on Sept. 12 for a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new blood pressure monitoring kiosk, which is available for public use. The first kiosk was installed at the Barnstormers’ home stadium in July with the support of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation. The kiosks are also the first American Heart Association blood pressure kiosks to be installed in Pennsylvania. The kiosks provide instructions to ensure the user receives an accurate blood pressure reading and information to interpret their blood pressure reading and make healthy lifestyle choices that can help control

their blood pressure. Users will also have the opportunity to register for the American Heart Association’s evidencebased blood pressure control tracker called Check. Change. Control. The program provides users with ongoing information and tips via email and helps them track their progress toward lowering their blood pressure over time using an online tracker. Anyone in the Lancaster community may take enroll in the Check. Change. Control. program by visiting www.ccctracker .com/aha/Gunterberg and entering campaign code GCFBP. According to new blood pressure guidelines released in November that define high blood pressure beginning at 130/80, 46 percent of U.S. adults may have high blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood pressure raises the risk of stroke, heart attack or heart failure. For more information about controlling high blood pressure and other healthy living tips, readers may visit www.heart.org.

E-Town Football Falls in District 3-5A Opener by Eric Pyles

The scoreboard said that Elizabethtown lost the game to Governor Mifflin by a 30-0 count in their District 3-5A clash on November 2nd but in actuality the Bears lost the game to Mother Nature. Rain, and a lot of it, turned Elizabethtown’s Thompson’s Field into a muddy mess, forcing both teams to turn to their ground attack for any chance at victory. Unfortunately, that is not E-town’s forte but does slot right into the Mustangs wheel house. The result was a Bear offense that cobbled together 58 total yards and two first downs while Governor Mifflin tallied 280 total yards with 268 yards and all four scores on the ground. With the Bear offense stuck in neutral, Mifflin started their first scoring drive near midfield. Seven rushes later, the last a 40-yard Bryce Stubler burst on a fourth and five conversion, and the Mustangs had a 6-0 lead midway through the opening quarter.

Another quick Elizabethtown possession, this one ending in a failed fourth down attempt, gave the Mustangs the ball at midfield. A short five play scoring drive, capped by the first of Kolbie Resser’s TD runs, put Governor Mifflin up 14-0. Resser’s 28-yard score provided a good boost on the way to a 92-yard evening. The game remained a 14-0 affair through the second quarter thanks to the Bear defense. E-town forced a punt and two turnovers plus added a fourth down stop on Governor Mifflin’s four second quarter possessions keeping the Mustangs from extending to their lead. “Defense did get some turnovers which helped and we had our chances Photo by Cheri Sine on offense we just couldn’t do any- Adnan Traore (52) and Elijah Eberly (15) hustle in to help Zachary thing, couldn’t get it going,” said Frank make the tackle on Governor Mifflin’s Javier Pena during head coach Andy Breault. last Friday’s District Three Class 5A opener in E-town. Mt. Calvary Ends Season With PIAA Semis Loss by Leah Sintic

In a disappointing twist, the Mount Calvary girls’ volleyball squad was knocked to an early exit from the PIAA District Three 1A tournament after a 3-0 loss to Covenant Christian in the semifinal round. Thursday’s determining game was held at Lower Dauphin with MC, the one seed, expected to advance to the championship match over fifth seeded Covenant Christian, but in an intense game with high stakes, Covenant got ahead early and held onto their momentum for the sweep (25-12, 25-23, 25-16). The loss brought the Chargers’ 2018 season to a halt, finalizing their overall record at an impressive 18-3. Entering the week of the district playoffs as the top seed, the Lady

Chargers were under pressure to deliver, and had to dig deep to hang on to their quarterfinal victory over Veritas Academy on Tuesday. After handily claiming sets one and two, triumph appeared to be a sure thing for the Mount Calvary squad, but Veritas regrouped for a comeback surge and knotted the set score at two apiece, forcing a determining fifth set in which the Chargers prevailed (25-20, 25-8, 23-25, 5-25, 15-10). In the early minutes of the contest, the teams traded points and gathered their bearings, but after the initial 3-3 scoreboard, Rachel Green stepped up for a four-point service run to help the Chargers pull away 7-3, a lead they held on to for the remainder of the set. All was going well for the Chargers after two sets, including a dominate

second game win where Kami Mummau was an offensive force. Mummau fired over a powerful kill to extend the MC lead to 11-5, catapulting the Chargers on a 4-0 run capped by a Mummau ace at 19-5. the Monarchs to work their way back into contention and clinch the third set after a back-and-forth battle. “We knew Veritas was going to come out with their best because it would be their season if they didn’t win,” acknowledged head coach Kate Ferrari. “They’re a great team and we knew they would come out strong. E-Town from pg 14 Another two-point conversion pushed the lead to 22-0. Two stalled Elizabethtown drives, coupled with another Governor Mifflin turnover, pushed the game into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs put their final points on the board with 10:38 remaining in the game, Reeser finished the scoring with a 25-yard QB draw. Singleton added a two-point conversion to set the final. Elizabethtown’s final drive of the game did produce their second first down with Leon Allen rumbling for five yards on a fourth and two attempt. Zach Frank (nine rushes, 17 yards) and Allen (eight rushes, 21 yards) fronted the Bear rushing attack while Luke Pierson (five catches, 36 yards) and Alex Diahn (one catch, four yards) accounted for Cole Patrick’s passing yards. Patrick finished the water-logged affair seven of 17. “They were trying to get a new ball

Passing is just our thing more so. They are a pretty balanced attack and we rely on passing so it hurt our offense tonight.” CROSS COUNTRY The E-town cross country team wrapped up the 2018 season on Saturday November 3rd with a trip around Hershey’s Parkside Course for the PIAA Championship. Only three members of the Bear’s squad qualified for the PIAA meet, all on the Lady Bears’ side. Cat Shontz was the first to cross the finish line, capping her E-town career with a PIAA-3A medal. Shontz picked up the hardware with a 25th place time of 20:04. Katie Locker crossed the finish line five seconds later to become the first finisher outside the medals. Madeline Quinn rounded out the E-town trio with a 34th place run of 20:21.

Momentum was clearly churning in favor of the Monarchs, and the Lady Chargers faced a dismal game four in which Veritas ran away with the first nine points and ultimately took their second set 25-5 to level the playing field. “After the second Veritas win, we told them it wasn’t over and we needed to keep fighting,” added Ferrari. “We told them to forget what happened in set four. play their game.” All the pressure was riding on the final 15 points, and after squandering their two-game lead, refocusing and reigniting the Charger momentum was a steep task, a leadership role that fell to upperclassmen such as Haley Witmer and Brie Lehman. “Haley and Brie really tried to rally the girls. They encouraged them to play like they’ve never played before and to encourage each other in it all,” credited Ferrari. The efforts paid off, and winning the first two points of the final set was a huge confidence boost for the Chargers as they worked their way back into a rhythm. Midway through the game Kara Locker helped propel MC ahead with one of her three blocks, giving the club a surge of adrenalin and the 8-4 advantage. Locker continued her contribution, rotating to the service line when the scoreboard read 12-10, and fired over an ace to bring the Chargers within two points of victory. Locker remained at the service helm for the duration of the contest and the team fought for every dig and pass to win the final two points and earn their ticket to the semifinal round. Mummau finished the contest with 18 digs, 11 kills, and 4 aces, and Witmer provided 29 setter assists. “We’ve been trying to really work on that mental side of the game. Moving on past mistakes, speaking positively to ourselves despite mistakes,” explained Ferrari. Speaking of positive achievements, three Lady Chargers, Witmer, Mummau, and Grace Hilsher, were named to the CCAC first team all-star list for their season long efforts. Though the season has reached its conclusion, reflecting back on 18 wins includes plenty of highlights to demonstrate the squad’s growth. With no senior players on the roster, the entire team looks forward to returning and building on their successes.

Current club president Althea Ramsay Carrigan noted that the organization is pleased to be able to support the program. “We’re incredibly proud of (the Summer Youth Experience), where youths in Lancaster can learn how to make friends, challenge themselves, improve self-esteem, and learn new skills to close the summer learning gap,” Carrigan said. As the flagship fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the Basketball Extravaganza raises up to $50,000 in net income yearly. Over the 38 years it has existed, the event has raised more than $600,000. Almost all the funds that are raised are returned to the local nonprofit community. In addition to the Summer Youth Experience, the event has helped to fund International

off ” the college basketball season. The tournament was only for men until 2006, when the Professor Terry Green Memorial Tournament added women’s teams to the mix. Proceeds from the Basketball Extravaganza will benefit the United Way’s Rotary Club of Lancaster Summer Youth Experience, a program that works to keep Lancaster youths engaged and productive. The Summer Youth Experience includes activities that are carefully selected for their benefits to students, specifically helping atrisk youths bridge the gap between the end of the spring semester and the return to school in the fall. The goal is to improve children’s lives and to reduce the likelihood of students dropping out of school.

When the Rotary Club of Lancaster/Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Charitable Basketball Extravaganza started nearly 40 years ago, the idea behind the event was to fill an empty spot in the January F&M basketball schedule. Bruce Holran, then F&M director of public relations, approached then school athletic director Dr. William Marshall with the idea to establish a fourteam men’s collegiate basketball tournament early in January. The event would bring people to the college and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization. Since that time, the event has grown dramatically, now including eight top men’s and women’s NCAA Division III games. The men’s William Marshall Tip-Off

Tournament will feature F&M, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hobart, and Alvernia University. The Terry Green Memorial Tournament for women will include F&M, Elizabethtown College, Washington & Lee, and Haverford College. The 39th annual Extravaganza will be held in F&M’s Mayer Gymnasium, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 16, 17, and 18. A complete game schedule may be found at www.lancasterrotary.org/event/b asketball-extravaganze-2018. Since 1992, when Marshall joined the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the event has been linked to the group. Following the partnership, both organizations worked to grow the tournament, eventually moving to the weekend before Thanksgiving to “tip

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will hold the second concert of its 72nd season on Saturday, Nov. 10, at McCaskey East High School, 1051 Lehigh Ave., Lancaster. Performances will take place at 3 and 8 p.m. Maestro Stephen Gunzenhauser will lead the combined forces of the Lancaster Symphony, the Keystone State Boychoir, and the Lancaster Symphony Chorus in Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” Guest vocalists Elizabeth Caballero, Daniel Shirley, and John Viscardi will be featured. The program will also include John Harbison’s “Remembering Gatsby” and Oscar Navarro’s “Paconchita Overture.” “Carmina Burana” (“Songs of Beuren”) is based on a manuscript uncovered in the monastery of Benediktbeuren in upper Bavaria in 1803. It is a collection of poems and songs in Latin, Middle-High German, and Old French, written by university students, minstrels, defrocked monks, and artists, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The works reflect a strong belief in destiny, an attitude that was a combination of medieval Christianity and ancient Greek philosophy. In 1935, Orff read the uncovered “Carmina Burana” manuscript as compiled by Johann Andrea Schmeller in 1847 and decided to use the texts in the first

section of a trilogy of cantatas titled “Carmina Burana,” “Catulli Carmina,” and “Trionfo di Afrodite.” By 1936, Orff finished the first part, and “Carmina Burana” premiered in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 8, 1937. The American premiere followed many years later in San Francisco on Oct. 3, 1954. John Harbison is a U.S. contemporary composer. “Remembering Gatsby” comes from an opera titled “The Great Gatsby.” It premiered in 1999, more than 25 years after work on the opera began. The opera was inspired by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby.” The “Paconchita Overture” is a Latin work by Oscar Navarro that premiered in July 2016. The name came from the combination of Navarro’s parents’ names, Paquito Navarro and Conchita González. The percussion section is the driving force behind the piece. The piece also features call and response conversations between the different instrument families, as well as complex rhythmic patterns that fuse with the flavor of Spanish heritage. Navarro performed two seasons ago with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for the U.S. premiere of one of his other works. To purchase tickets, readers may call the LSO box office at 717291-4420 or visit www.lancaster symphony.org.
