he Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., is getting crafty. The museum will host the Elizabethtown Heritage Craft Show from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14. Admission is by monetary donation to the museum or by donation of nonperishable food item for the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown. “The craft show is an opportunity for the crafters to showcase and sell their work, for the public to come and enjoy what the vendors are offering and for the food bank to benefit as well,” said Nancy Landis, museum director. The Winters Heritage House Museum building dates to the 1760s, Landis noted, and money from the craft show will help with necessary repairs to the site. “We are just getting ready to

“ExtraGive” Is Extraordinarily Important BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
In a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire

through the show will be one way, but you can re-enter if you want to revisit a booth.” In a typical year, the Winters Heritage House Museum offers a range of classes on traditional skills like hearth cooking, spinning and weaving. There is also a genealogy library on site. “We are currently offering selfguided tours of the museum with a QR code you download on your phone,” Swartz said. “It’s an interactive tour.” Landis noted that the craft show offers a way to bring people from the community into a building that has a historical significance in Elizabethtown. “We have people who come back every year, and then we have people who are here for the first time who say, ‘Why haven’t I been coming to this before? It’s great.’ We really have something for everyone,” she said.

We estimate we will need about $50,000 for that.” Visitors to the craft show, which is marking its 30th year, can expect a wide variety of items, said Maryann Swartz, museum manager. “It’s a nice selection of unique, handmade items,” she shared, listing hand-forged iron pieces, scarves and hats made from handspun dog fur, home décor, jewelry, handsewn items, hand-turned wood and more. “We hope to have about 25 vendors, and we may have some outside in the backyard on Saturday, weather permitting,” Landis stated. To keep the event as safe as possible, masks will be required for both shoppers and vendors. “We are limiting the number of vendors per room and limiting the number of people allowed in at one time,” Landis said. “Our route

ExtraGive from pg 1 generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. A group of 105 Pennsylvania National Guard (PNG) soldiers and airmen competed with rifles and pistols in multiple courses of fire to determine the best marksmen during the Governor’s Twenty match at Fort Indiantown Gap recently. Created in 1968, the Governor’s Twenty is a state-level National Guard award presented annually to the top 20 shooters in a state. The top 20 scorers were awarded the embroidered Governor’s Twenty tab and a certificate to identify them as being outstanding marksmen. Staff Sgt. John Rebuck of Elizabethtown earned a spot in the top 10, finishing in eighth place. During the Governor’s Twenty match, participants have the opportunity to test marksmanship skills and weapon systems in a battlefocused environment. The Army and Air Force both recognize the state award and it is reflected on the service members’ official personnel record. Events were varied and included multiple distances and shooting positions. The competition was conducted by the PNG Individual Training Branch, Marksmanship Training Unit.

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

ECHOS works to provide services to prevent and alleviate poverty while empowering stability, said Katlyn Lantz, ECHOS development coordinator. Participants who stop by ECHOS to pick up their
medal on designated days will also be entered to win one of several glass plates etched with the Great Turkey Hunt logo. Even though the race is not happening in the traditional way, Wells noted that the virtual event has its benefits, including being able to draw from a larger pool of participants who are not limited by geographic location. “Our first participant to sign up lives in North Carolina. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s

Those results will appear in the November 18 edition of the Elizabethtown Merchandiser.

Elizabethtown managed a late pushback to close the gap to 24-18 but Hempfield was able to hold on for a 25-18 win. Game two started well for the Lady Bears with the visitors jumping out to a quick 6-2 lead. Hempfield countered with run of their own to close the gap, eventually tying the game at 7-7. The two sides traded points for a bit with E-town holding a brief 10-8 lead only to see the Lady Knights tie it right back up, at 10-10. Neither side maintained control with the lead bouncing back and forth while the score climbed to 14-14. Hempfield found their grove with a quick 5-0 burst but the Lady Bears countered with a four-point spurt of their own to make it 19-18 before squaring the score up a moment later at 20-20. Elizabethtown was able to stave off elimination by closing out with a 5-3 run, collecting a 25-23 win. Game four opened like game three, a quick 3-0 Hempfield run followed by an equal E-town run and a 3-3 deadlock. Elizabethtown was unable to replicate their game three magic and the Lady Knights were able to slowly pull away until the 25-17 final. The 3-1 loss drops the Lady Bears to 12-3 for the 2020 season that included a LancasterLebanon League Section Two runner-up finish and a District 34A berth. The next week everything flip-flops, and you are picking up your second win of the season while snapping a fivegame slide courtesy of a 43-14 shellacking of Cedar Crest. The Bears dominated Cedar Crest on both sides of the ball, racking up 420 yards of offense while holding the Falcons to just 157 total yards, leading to the 29point victory. Riley Drager was the catalyst for the offensive success, racking up 179 yards and two scores with the bulk, 160 yards and both scores, of that coming via his 22 carries. Josh Rudy was under center and tossed two touchdowns while collecting 128 yards with Patrick Gilhool serving
as his favorite target. Gilhool, the former QB, hauled in four of Rudy’s 10 completions for 48 yards and a score. Despite the statistical domination, things started poorly for the Bears.
