Great Turkey Hunt 5K To Support ECHOS By Chelsea Peifer

It may not be every day that you have your eyes peeled for rogue turkeys, but runners in the Great Turkey Hunt 5K will be encouraged to be on the lookout for just that. Stuffed turkeys will be hidden along the course for participants to find and trade in afterward for a frozen turkey. But that’s not all - pie will be served after the race, and all proceeds from the event will support Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS). See Great Turkey Hunt pg 7

Inviting the community to participate in the Great Turkey Hunt 5K on Thanksgiving Day at Elizabethtown College are (from left) race facilitator Chuck Wells, race director Grace Wells, and Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS) assistant director Leigh Ann Farling. Proceeds from the event will be used in partnership with ECHOS to support local families in need this holiday season.

minimum gift amount has been reduced from $25 to $10. The change was made with the goal of inspiring more individuals to participate and generating more engagement from across the region. The new minimum amount aligns with the Community Foundation strategic priority of inclusion and aims to continue increasing the number of unique donors who make a gift during the event. A number of returning features are planned this year, as well. The Extraordinary Give will again offer an opportunity for individuals to leverage their social media networks in support of a nonprofit they care about by becoming a “Fundraising Champion.” Fundraising Champions may activate their personal networks to generate giving for the causes they care about using a personal link. To become a Fundraising Champion, readers may visit www.extragive.org, find their favorite organization, and choose the button that says “Fundraise.” The members of the Give Fleet, a volunteer driving squad open to the public, will promote the event by applying a temporary decal to their personal or business vehicle.

Loan Program from pg 1 Eck noted that while LDHL has offered interest-free loans to college students from Lancaster County for nearly 60 years, this is the first time it has created a lending program for students attending technical or trade schools. To ease into the TOTE Loan Program, interest-free loans will initially be available to students who will attend the 12-month or 18-month Practical Nursing or 16-month Automotive Technology Specialized Associate Degree programs at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC). “It’s a pilot, (so) I’m sure we will learn things doing it,” Eck said. “Our goal will be to open (the program) to any (school), but we have to start with baby steps.” The funding for the loans came from the estate of E. Ann Klein, who died in 2007. Klein had distributed funds to several organizations, with the stipulation that they receive interest payments from the invested money for the first 10 years. Now that the time has expired, LDHL has received the principal, and the resulting cash in hand will allow the funding of loans. When deciding how to use the bequest, the LDHL board looked at Klein’s life for inspiration. Klein was the daughter of one of the owners who turned New Holland Machine Company into a thriving business. She held a pilot’s license and had an interest in antique cars. According to the Elizabethtown Historical Society, Klein and her husband had more than 55 antique automobiles stored in Elizabethtown. When Klein was unable to source tires and other parts to restore her vehicles, she launched the Universal Tire Company and later Klein Kars. While business principles can be learned in a traditional four-year college, trades like auto repair are typically learned at a different See Loan Program pg 7

Great Turkey Hunt from pg 1 Race director Grace Wells explained that her husband, Chuck Wells, who also facilitates the annual Frozen Foot races in Elizabethtown, had always wanted to organize a race to raise funds to give Christmas gifts to people in need. When ECHOS executive director Deb Jones spoke at their church, Elizabethtown United Church of Christ, last year, Chuck and Grace talked to her about the possibility of hosting a race to benefit ECHOS. Chuck and Grace got to work and planned the inaugural Great Turkey Hunt 5K, which took place on Thanksgiving Day in 2018, with 108 participants. “Our mission at ECHOS is to mobilize communities to provide services that prevent and alleviate poverty and empower stability in our neighbors, and this (event) is such great evidence of that happening,” said ECHOS assistant director Leigh Ann Farling. “We want to express how thankful we are to have had Chuck and Grace come to us and offer to do this.” This year’s Great Turkey Hunt 5K race will

begin at 8:15 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28, at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. The course will begin from the Elizabethtown College Brown parking lot, located across College Avenue from Lake Placida. Registration and packet pickup will be open from 6:45 to 8 a.m. near the starting line. Jogging strollers and friendly pets are welcome to accompany participants, too. To register in advance, interested individuals may visit www.appliedrace mgmt.com/the-great-turkey-hunt. Race T-shirts will be available to purchase on the day of the event while supplies last. Post-race festivities, in addition to pie, will include the presentation of awards to the overall top male and female finishers, as well as age group awards to the first-, second-, and third-place finishers in each of the 10-year age groups. Additionally, everyone will receive a participant medal. As mentioned, proceeds from the race will be used in partnership with ECHOS to support local families in need this holiday season. According to Farling, ECHOS currently operates 12 programs - three of which focus on housing - to meet the needs of residents in the Elizabethtown area. “Last year we invested over $72,000 into the community to address client needs,” noted Farling. From July 2018 to July 2019, ECHOS served a total of 750 people. “(The Great Turkey Hunt 5K) is a great opportunity for anyone looking for a way to impact their neighbors,” Farling remarked. Volunteers are needed to help in various capacities at the Great Turkey Hunt 5K. To sign up to volunteer, interested individuals may email vgwells@comcast.net. ECHOS representatives will be at the Great Turkey Hunt 5K to provide information and answer questions about the organization. Volunteers are always needed at ECHOS, and people may visit www.facebook.com/ECHOSLancaster/ to learn more about those opportunities.

LDHL expects to receive applications from adults who have already entered the workforce and now want to change careers or to enhance their skills, Eck said. “We’re learning how big of an audience there is (for this),” she added. Like the college loan program, the Student Aid Report (SAR) generated after the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be used to determine the size of a TOTE loan.
