we are so thankful for our readers and the local businesses and organizations that help to make our communities thrive “ExtraGive” Is Extraordinarily Important BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
In a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF See ExtraGive pg 5

The 34th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 19. Due to COVID-19 and the Department of Health’s safety guidelines, the process for this year’s annual event will be different. The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. UPMC has partnered with LCPN to provide COVID-19 health screenings to volunteers. Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-5675341 from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 11. Registration is required no later than Dec. 11. A volunteer will
deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19. The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community
Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. For information about how to contribute, readers may visit www.lcpn.org.
Eye Drop 2020 Postponed VisionCorps has postponed its Eye Drop 2020 rappelling event, originally scheduled for Friday, Nov. 20. The event is now set for Friday, July 9, 2021. Due to concern for the health and safety of participants, volunteers, staff, and donors, the decision was made to
postpone Eye Drop 2020. Those scheduled to participate in the event as a rappeller, donor, or sponsor have been contacted and asked to extend their participation and support to the rescheduled event in 2021. For more information, readers may call 717-205-4115.

communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organizations to adhere to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF will award a creativity prize after the event, and it has posted downloadable photo props and social media images that individuals may use at home at www.extragive.org/info/ downloads. “At its core, ExtraGive has been a digital event,” Spangler said. “From a pure mechanics standpoint, nothing has changed from past years, but it’s no secret that it won’t feel quite the same this year.” Rather than host an in-person countdown to the close of the event, LCCF will present a live webcast from 5 p.m. to

midnight. It will feature entertainment and spotlights of participating nonprofits so viewers may find new causes to support. A special broadcast with WGAL and Choice Live from Lititz will air from 9 to 10 p.m. Community members are invited to submit videos and post on social media with #IGiveExtra to say why they are participating in the ExtraGive for inclusion in the webcast. ET Football Hosts Exeter in Season Finale BY ERIC PYLES
The old saying goes that ‘all good things must end’ but when it comes to high school sports, each season must end regardless of how good the season has been, after all the next season is just around the corner. For the Elizabethtown football team their 2020 season came to close on Friday, November 6th when the Bears welcomed Exeter Township in a COVID-19 added non-league tilt. While the home side was hoping their Bears could close out the season with a win, the visiting Eagles had other ideas, handing E-town a 37-9 Photo by Cheri Sine setback to end the Bears’ 2020 camE-town’s Braden Cummings runs through the tackle attempt by paign with a 2-6 mark. Despite the final score, ElizabethExeter’s Gio Nowotarski during the Bears’ 37-9, nonleague loss town put the first points on the board at home on November 6.
when a bad Exeter snap was recovered by the Eagles in their own end zone. The Bears’ slim 2-0 cushion stood through the remainder of the opening stanza, but things started to come undone in the season quarter. Exeter notched the first three in a run of six straight scores, starting with a two-yard Tyler Yocum plunge. Up next was a 35-yard Gio Nowtarski punt return for a touchdown with a 21-yard Mikey Muser field goal wrapping up the second quarter burst. The resulting 17-2 Eagle lead only grew after the break thanks to two Exeter scores in the third quarter. Gavin McCusker dished out both with Joey Schlaffer hauling in a 25-yard score before Carson Schmidt made a 53-yard trip to paydirt. Those two scores pushed the Eagle lead to 31-2 as the teams looked to finish up in the final frame. Exeter managed one final score on a one-yard Cabraun Woody TD, pushing their lead to a mercy rule inducing 37-2. Elizabethtown was able to make one final trip to the end zone, sending senior lineman Jett Kelly off with a one-yard score and a 37-9 final. Riley Drager finished with 100 rushing yards on the nose, adding two receiving yards to his game tally. Patrick Gilhool was the top target in the passing game with five catches for 56 yards while Josh Rudy finished with 75 yards on nine of 17 passing. CROSS COUNTRY One day after the football team
closed out their 2020 season, the Elizabethtown cross country season officially came to a close. Madeline Quinn wrapped up what head coach Mark Gallagher called “an outstanding XC running career” by taking part in her fourth straight PIAA-3A Championship race. The High Point University (North Carolina) bound Quinn equaled her best PIAA finish by claiming 34th
place with a time of 20:29. “Considering the heat at the time and the very poor air quality, she ran a great race,” said Gallagher. “Maddie was one of the most dedicated, hardworking runners I ever coached,” he added. “She was a great role model for younger runners, both as a runner and as a person. She will be greatly missed!”

the Elizabethtown Fire Department Ambulance. Although Northwest EMS is based in Elizabethtown, it also has stations in Maytown, Manheim and Brickerville. It provides basic and advanced life support services over 173 square miles in 11 municipalities throughout Lancaster County, as well as two each in Dauphin and Lebanon counties. Last year, the agency fielded 7,843 emergency dispatches, with an average response time of one minute, 46 seconds out the door and less than eight minutes on scene. The agency provides 24-hour coverage seven days a week with 40 full-time and 35 part-time staff members, as well as six volunteers. In addition to providing emergency services, the agency conducts a wide variety of community education classes on topics including basic first aid, CPR, farm and home safety, fall risk and
prevention and concussion awareness and prevention. “We also do a lot of showand-tell in schools, and we visit churches and other organizations with our community outreach,” Kingsboro said. The pandemic has made an impact on the agency, he noted, adding that Northwest EMS has worked with other groups to form a COVID-19 response team and provide a preshift checklist for local police departments. Kingsboro said the award is important to the agency, but the community is even more important. “We really believe in being an active part of the community,” he stated. “We get the majority of our support from community donations and memberships. Community support helps us out so much so we’re ready if and when the community needs us.”
