Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD) saluted 23 local veterans during its 12th annual Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11. The program afforded school officials and high school students an opportunity to salute local veterans for their service to the country. It was also an opportunity for students to learn about the contributions that veterans have made and learn about the meaning of the day. Elizabethtown Area School District board president Terry Seiders and Elizabethtown Borough Mayor Chuck Mummert joined superintendent of schools Michele Balliet in thanking the veterans who had gathered for the program in the high school auditorium. All five branches of the military - Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy - were represented among the veterans who gathered for the ceremony. High school seniors Abigail Dehmey, Alexander Hartman, Joseph Sikora, Andrew Telenko, and Winston Williams also took part in the program along with the high school marching band. The students took turns delivering the invocation, presenting the history of taps, playing taps, reading a brief history of Veterans Day, and reading a tribute poem to the veterans. “Mix It Up Day” from pg 1 Bear Creek School hosted a Mix It Up Day lunch on Oct. 22 to promote inclusion and connect students with a new classmate over lunch. The event was timed to coincide with the international campaign, for which the Bear Creek School joined thousands of schools across the globe in helping students step outside their comfort zone and get to know peers they may have never met. To make it easier for students to sit with someone new at lunch, school staff handed students a playing card when they entered the cafeteria. Students with identical playing cards were matched based on a prearranged seating chart. In addition, school staff fostered a relaxed, fun environment

with music, dance, and conversation starter questions. Mix It Up Day is a call to action that challenged the students to make a new friend in a safe, supportive environment. The purpose of fostering interaction across group lines was to help reduce prejudice and bullying, as well as build a more inclusive and welcoming school community. Pictured on front:

Thanksgiving is a day for families to relax and enjoy a delicious meal with their loved ones. It is not a time to be alone; however, not everyone is blessed to have a family, or relatives nearby, to share this day with. That is why the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC) family and community members will be cooking and serving the church’s 15th annual free community Thanksgiving Day dinner. In 2018, more than 90 volunteers helped cook and serve Thanksgiving meals to approximately 400 people. After guests enjoyed a delicious home-cooked turkey dinner, many volunteers sat together and enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner, too. This year’s free Thanksgiving Day dinner will be served on Thursday, Nov. 28, in the fellowship hall of St. Mark’s UMC, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Besides turkey and gravy, the meal will include stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, rolls and butter, cranberry sauce, dessert, and beverages. People who want to enjoy dinner at the church with family, friends, and community members will be greeted, seated, and served the family-style dinner at noon and should plan to arrive between 11:45 a.m. and noon. Takeout options are also

available. Those who pick up a dinner to take home should arrive at the church between 11 and 11:20 a.m. only. Arrangements can also be made in advance to have meals delivered to individuals who are sick or unable to leave their homes. To make reservations for eatin, takeout, or delivery, individuals are asked to call the church at 717-653-5493 by Monday, Nov. 25. Organizer Janet Lehman noted that although reservations are strongly encouraged so that the team can better plan for the dinner, walk-ins will be warmly greeted. Lehman explained that the goal of St. Mark’s UMC is to provide a Thanksgiving meal for everyone in the community who is looking for a place to enjoy a delicious home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner. “So whether you are going through a difficult time, you have no family in the area, or (you) would like a warm (and) welcoming place to take your family for a mouthwatering turkey dinner, St. Mark’s is the place to come for your Thanksgiving dinner,” stated Lehman. Although there is no cost for the dinner, donations will be accepted. Volunteers are needed in the evening on Wednesday, Nov. 27,

and on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers are sought to donate cakes and pies, peel potatoes, make stuffing, set tables and chairs, cook dinner, serve the dinner, clean up following the dinner, and wash dishes. To sign up to help, interested individuals may contact Lehman at 717-653-4189 or lehmanfamily @comcast.net. Members of St. Mark’s UMC believe that they are called to invite, connect, equip, and send followers of Jesus to meet needs, touch lives, and change the world. One way that the St. Mark’s family can meet needs and touch lives in the community is through its food ministry. In addition to the free Thanksgiving Day dinner, St. Mark’s volunteers, with help from Mary Mother of the Church Parish, serve free meals to the community on the third Sunday of most months from 4 to 5 p.m. in St. Mark’s fellowship hall. Pictured on front: The congregation of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy welcomes anyone to enjoy a free Thanksgiving dinner at noon on Nov. 28 at the church. Takeout options are available. Reservations are strongly encouraged, and volunteers are needed.

Candlelight Tour from pg 1 The property of the Marietta Senior Apartments, 601 E. Market St., will be decked out for the holidays and open to tour participants thanks to the efforts of manager Lisa Kashner and director of property management Jo Raff. “This is our first year decorating the outside of the building, so we’re going all out and channeling our inner Joanna Gaines,” said Kashner with a laugh. The building stands where the B.F. Hiestand Lumber Mill was originally built in 1848. Kashner noted that the apartments’ residents traditionally go above and beyond for Halloween. Being on the Marietta Candlelight Tour for the first time has given everyone another holiday to throw their energy and creativity into. The building’s lobbies and community room will be part of the tour, as well as the apartment of resident Jan Newcomer. Born and raised in Wrightsville, Newcomer moved into Marietta Senior Apartments five years ago after retiring and moving back to the area from Lewes, Del. Her apartment features an array of country and primitive décor. “It truly is a community event showcasing the entire town during the holiday season,” said Preston. Preston explained that the

Marietta Candlelight Tour planning committee only takes a three-week break each year before it starts the planning of the next tour. “You can see the passion in their eyes when start talking about their thoughts for the next year,” remarked Preston. Tickets may be purchased in advance for a discount at www.mariettarestoration.org or by calling 717-426-4048. Tickets are also available to buy in advance at the locations listed on the website. On the day of the event, tickets may be purchased in Marietta at Donegal Intermediate School, 1177 River Road; Old Town Hall Museum, North Waterford Avenue and Walnut Street; and First National Escape, 100 W. Market St. All proceeds from the Marietta Candlelight Tour will benefit the MRA and its efforts to restore and preserve the historic buildings in Marietta. A map is provided with the tour program. Parking and shuttle bus service will be available from various stops throughout Marietta, and the Rivertowne Trolley Company will be operating as well. In addition to the participating homes, Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church - celebrating its 200th anniversary - will be on the tour as this year’s featured

church. Several other historic properties will be open to participants as well, including Old Town Hall Museum. Built in 1847, the building now hosts a museum on the first floor with a unique collection of Marietta and Lancaster County memorabilia. Union Meeting House will showcase work from local artists for people to browse and purchase. Resident organist Kirk Garner will play Christmas music on the Meeting House’s 1847 Henry Knauff Pipe Organ. Arts and crafts vendors will be set up at First National Escape and Pioneer Fire Company. Chicken and waffle meals will be available to purchase at the fire company from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. At the Marietta Community House, Nissley Vineyards will offer wine sampling and wine to purchase, and Marietta Wax Company will be set up selling primitive decor. In addition, Susquehanna Waldorf School, 15 W. Walnut St., will host its annual Winter Faire from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., where tour participants - as well as the public - are invited to stop in for holiday shopping, children’s games and activities, and food and beverages. “Marietta truly sparkles on the first Sunday of every December,” Preston said. “It’s the highlight to a lot of people’s holiday season, (and) it really kicks off Christmas in the river town.”

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been awarded a $30,000 KidCents Regional Grant from The Rite Aid Foundation. Funds will be used for the organization’s youth programs across the 27-county region, including school pantries, Kids Café sites and BackPack Plus Programs. The KidCents Regional Grant Program, which provides grants of $15,000 to $30,000, funds specific out-of-school time programs focused on children’s nutrition, physical fitness and academic success. The KidCents program also annually supports a select group of more than 400 nonprofit, children-focused organizations that are committed to improving the health and well-being of children living in the communities Rite Aid serves, as well as national organizations focused on critical children’s issues, including The Fred Rogers Company, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Folds of Honor. In this cycle of KidCents Regional Grants, The Rite Aid Foundation awarded 233 nonprofit grants totaling more than

$5 million. Grants were available in select counties in the following states: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington. KidCents Regional Grants support nonprofit organizations with programs that serve children in kindergarten through grade 12 and improve quality of life in Rite Aid communities. The grants support three of KidCents’ primary focus areas for improving the health and well-being of children: healthy eating, active living and education. To be considered, programs and projects were required to take place during out-of-school-time, with priority given to programs that support communities in need. This is the second cycle of KidCents Regional Grants. In the first cycle, The Rite Aid Foundation awarded 180 grants, totaling more than $4 million. Another cycle of KidCents Regional Grants will launch in 2020. To learn more about the program, readers may visit www.riteaid.com/grants.

The GateHouse from pg 1 organization received from the Capitol Area Behavioral Health Collaboration in March 2017. The stone mansion was built in 1876 under the direction of ironmaster Henry Miller Watts, who had the home constructed as a wedding gift for his son, Ethelbert. In addition to his success in Marietta’s iron industry, Henry’s accomplishments included serving as an ambassador to Austria. Holland explained that the mansion’s three-story tower was modeled after a castle Henry admired in Austria. Most recently, the estate belonged to the late Donald and Joyce Hershey, who purchased the property in 1981 and extensively remodeled the 9,000square-foot house while preserving many of its original features, such as carved wooden doorknobs, gas chandeliers, and oak and walnut patterned floors. The Hersheys, who were among the original founders of LCBC (Lives Changed by Christ) Church, had converted the property’s garage into the first venue for LCBC. At the grand opening of The GateHouse at Riverview Tower, speakers included The GateHouse board president Mark F. Walmer, drug court judge David L. Ashworth, and Kristi Martarano, the future clinical director of The GateHouse at Riverview Tower. Martarano is a former client of The GateHouse, a graduate of Leadership Lancaster, and the current clinical director of The GateHouse for women in Mountville. The Mountville facility will be

Holland explained that the 90-day recovery program begins with a two-week orientation and that a professional and credentialed treatment team works with each resident on counseling, recovery, life skills, and connecting with local 12-step groups.

“We want to encourage and transform the lives of individuals who are struggling with addiction, and we do that by walking beside them in a safe, community-driven space,” summarized Holland. “Our goal is to reintegrate (residents) into the community.” Holland said that establishing a new facility truly meets a need in the area, as the organization had been serving approximately

Yet another new initiative by the EACC to promote member businesses during the holidays is Charlie the Chamber Elf, a stuffed doll that will be going on adventures and visiting local businesses. EACC will post photographs and clues on his whereabouts on Facebook at “Discover Elizabethtown” so that the community may guess his location. Charlie the Chamber Elf will stay in one location for three days before hopping to a new spot. One winner who correctly guesses his location at each stop will be selected to receive a prize from that business. “The goal with Charlie is to get more online exposure for our members, so that people can see how much of their shopping can be done right here in Elizabethtown,” noted Dixon. Barnstormers Honored By Atlantic League The Lancaster Barnstormers front office has been lauded by the Atlantic League, winning two awards for the 2019 season, it was announced recently by league president Rick White. Lancaster garnered the league’s Community Service Award for the franchise that has done the greatest work aiding those in need in its particular market. In addition, the Barnstormers’ general manager, Mike Reynolds, won the Joe Klein Executive of the Year honor for his work in growing the Barnstormers’ brand and attendance during his three seasons at the

front office helm. The Barnstormers’ organization was feted for several community outreaches. One in particular was the Christmas Tree Lane presented by the BCF Group and the Christmas Spirit Light Show that was pioneered at Clipper Magazine Stadium during the 2018 holiday season, generating over $29,000 for local charities. Also factored into the honor were Thanksgiving and Christmas programs centered at Clipper Magazine Stadium that feed the hungry through the holiday season. Lancaster is also the site of a Camp Out for Homelessness

event in conjunction with Tabor Community Services. Lancaster, in its 15th season in the Atlantic League, was also applauded by the league for the creation of the Little Sluggers’ Dugout, a private room for nursing mothers, sponsored by MayGrant Obstetrics and Gynecology. Mental health awareness also came to the forefront in May in a partnership with the Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital. Cylo also kept a busy schedule during the 2018-19 campaign, making 587 appearances outside of the confines of the stadium. Reynolds has dramatically

increased season and group ticket sales since joining the Barnstormers for the 2017 season through innovative programs like seat wraps. He has overseen a surge in attendance that produced a rise of over 35,000 fans for 2019. It was also noted by White and the other club owners that Reynolds has spearheaded a sales initiative that provides training for all teams with a yearly seminar held in Lancaster. For more information about the Lancaster Barnstormers, readers may call 717-509-HITS (4487) or visit www.lancaster barnstormers.com.
