Christmas At The Star Barn Village Will Benefit Brittany’s Hope BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ake a train ride to Santa’s workshop or just enjoy the historical setting at Christmas at The Star Barn Village, a benefit for Brittany’s Hope. Christmas at The Star Barn Village will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. To ensure the safety of guests, the event will feature VIP entry with preregistered timed tickets between 7:15 and 10:15 a.m. Additional time slots may be added closer to the event, and readers may get the most updated information at www.brittanyshope.org. Although this event has been held for the last several years, this year will look a little different, said Mai-Lynn Abel Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope. “In the past we did a wonderful VIP breakfast session with Santa, but due to COVID, we are unable to hold it this year,” she explained. “In lieu, we are so excited to introduce a new activity.” This year, attendees will board the Santa Express, an 1860s steam engine train, for a ride to Santa’s workshop. “The train will pull into Santa’s workshop and he’ll board with Mrs. Claus to visit and present each boy and girl with a special gift,” Sahd said. In addition to the train ride, the event will include an opportunity to meet characters from the Enchanted Teapot, a local entertainment company; a brown bag

When Jennifer Allen and her husband, Phillip, adopted a baby in 2017, they didn’t know their lives would change in more ways than they could imagine. “My middle son has spina bifida,” said Allen. “He can’t feel from his knees down. … We didn’t know he had a disability until we were picking him up in China.” Jaden, 4, uses crutches to walk short distances and relies on a wheelchair for longer trips. Watching her son try to navigate the world with a disability inspired Allen to create Wonders Within Reach, a travel website and blog focused on travel resources for families with disabilities. Visitors to Christmas at The Star Barn Village will also have the opportunity to take a self-guided tour of the property and the buildings on-site, Sahd noted, adding, “Everything will be beautifully decorated for the holidays.” Sahd emphasized that the organizers put a lot of thought into how to put on a physical event and still make the health and safety of guests a priority. “We’ll be limiting crowds and controlling how many people can be in one place at a time,” she explained. “We want to make sure everyone has a safe and magical time.” All events will be held outside, Sahd noted. “We want to make sure people come dressed for the weather and wear good walking shoes,” she recommended. All of the proceeds from Christmas at The Star Barn Village benefit Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based organization that focuses on providing aid to abandoned children, including adoption grants for families seeking to adopt special needs children, Sahd said. “We love the opportunity to connect with our community and all of the people who generously support us,” she stated. “This event helps support our mission and our work, which is so critically needed. We serve the most vulnerable people.”

Krasley Christmas, a display in the yard of Don Krasley, features more than 80,000 lights synchronized to Christmas music. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Don Krasley loves Christmas, and it shows. For the past 14 years, he has set up a Christmas display in his yard at 525 Woodland Drive, Manheim, and has invited the public to stop by and watch a light show set to music. His display will run every night from Thursday, Nov. 26, through Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021. The hours are 5:30 to 10 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, and from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Krasley Christmas, which is what he calls his display, started

WE SERVICE WHAT WE SELL!

as a joke between Krasley and his brother, who sent him a video of a commercial showing an elaborate display. “He was like, ‘Is this your house?’ as a joke, but it lit a fire in me,” Krasley recalled. “I said, ‘I can do that.’ And I did.” He was influenced by his grandfather, who had a display in his yard in Manheim and who passed on his love of Christmas. What started as a relatively modest display has grown to include more than 80,000 lights and a lengthy show choreographed to music that

Krasley chooses and programs. It takes Krasley about three weeks to set up the display, but he spends time all year working on it, whether he’s adding new songs or picking up new items for his yard. A few years ago, he switched to all LED lights, which has significantly cut down on his electric bill, he said, noting that he spends about $50 a month to operate the display. Additionally, Krasley is an electrician by trade, so he keeps costs down by doing almost all of the wiring and other electrical work himself. Over the years, Krasley has worked on his yard to make room for the ever-growing display. “When I first started this, I didn’t have a wide-open property for it, so I took out a lot of old trees,” he explained. His home is located on a cul-de-sac, which makes the perfect spot for visitors to view the display from their cars, and his property is a bit isolated, so the light show doesn’t bother neighbors. For the past 10 years, Krasley has been collecting donations

for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central PA in Hershey as part of his display, although donations are optional. “I like what the Ronald McDonald House does for families. They are a great organization,” he stated, adding that he and some friends set up the lights outside the house in Hershey every year as well. Over the past decade, he has donated more than $29,000 to the organization. This year, Krasley’s display will include several pink elements to raise awareness for breast cancer research in honor of his wife, Tammy, a breast cancer survivor. Additionally, he will hold “pink outs” to benefit Makenna Linder, a Manheim 6-year-old who has undergone treatment for cancer. Krasley encourages everyone to check out his display, whether they are return guests or new visitors. “People are looking for fun things to do that don’t cost a fortune,” he said. “This is something fun for everyone.”

Gretna Theatre Plans Concert Gretna Theatre will be one of a select group of nonprofit arts organizations in the country and one of only two in Pennsylvania that will present actress and singer Vanessa Williams in a special livestreamed virtual concert. “Live From the West Side” will be delivered online on Saturday, Dec. 5. The concert, transmitted live in HD with professional sound mixing, will take place at the Shubert Virtual Studios on Manhattan’s West Side. It will feature a mix of Broadway show tunes, pop songs, and personal stories from

Williams’ life. At-home audience members will be invited to email in questions to be answered during the event. Virtual passes can be purchased at www.gretna theatre.org. Passes include access to the livestreamed performance, plus an additional 72 hours of on-demand viewing of a video recording of the livestream after the broadcast ends. Proceeds from the concert will help to sustain the community that produces and presents live professional theater and seeks to engage, transform, entertain, and educate.

Instagram account focused on family travel. She soon realized that although there were lots of accounts like that, something was missing. “None of the families looked like mine,” she noticed. “You don’t see a lot of families with disabilities out traveling. You tend to see other families like yours at physical therapy or at the hospital. I wanted to show what it’s like out in the community.” Allen noted that approximately 20% of people in the United States live with a disability. “My goal with my website is to raise disability awareness throughout the travel industry,” she said. “I believe that awareness is the first step toward progress.” Allen’s website and blog feature posts on everything from the most accessible beaches to tips for a no-stress hotel stay with children, as well as ideas to help make it a little easier to navigate the world with a disability. “I know it’s difficult to get out and do things when you have a disability,” she stated. “I’m learning all sorts of tips and tricks and want to share those with other people.” COVID-19 has put a damper on her travel plans so far, she said, noting that the farthest they’ve gone as a family is Canada, but she hopes to schedule a European road trip in the future. Above all, she wants her website and blog to help raise disability awareness. “While my main audience is the disability community, I believe awareness is important for all of us,” she explained. “If we can see that there are people in the world who are different from us, we can all benefit.” To learn more about Wonders Within Reach, readers may visit https://wonders withinreach.com/.

Christmas Will Have An Old-Fashioned Feel At Mount Hope Christmas spirit will be in the air during Holidays at Mount Hope. dinner theater, said Candace Smith, director of sales and communications for Mount Hope Estate and Winery and the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. The event evolved from a Charles Dickens Christmas into the interactive show it is today, held in the 19th-century mansion on site. Although this year’s event will look a little different than years past, it will still feature all of the holiday cheer guests expect. “Guests will check in at the front door of the mansion and be directed to their individual-party, socially distanced tables, where they will enjoy a three-course meal as the characters move from room to room to entertain with Christmas carols and seasonal storytelling,” Smith explained. For the Holiday Open House, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the grounds and mansion free of charge.

“The Holiday Open House is a great event to simply enjoy shopping with unique merchants, visit with Father Christmas, have lunch at the Anchor & Mermaid Tavern (and) see the opulently decorated mansion,” she stated. “Guests can take their time and do some or all of these things at their own pace.” Smith said both events are important for Mount Hope. Although some changes will be in place this year, including limiting the number of guests allowed inside the buildings, the spirit of the events will remain intact. “Both the dinner theater and open house have become traditions for many of our visitors, and we look forward to providing these seasonal opportunities in a safe and merry way,” she noted. “We offer unique alternatives to modern-day holiday celebrations. The 34th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 19. Due to COVID19 and the Department of Health’s safety guidelines, the process for this year’s annual event will be different. The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. UPMC has partnered with LCPN to provide COVID-19 health screenings to volunteers. Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-

The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. For information about how to contribute, readers may visit www.lcpn.org.

The Middletown Holiday Home Tour Planning Committee will hold a Holiday Scavenger Hunt at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, and Sunday, Dec. 6. The hunt will be a COVID-19 safe family holiday event. The scavenger hunt is self-guided, and each family can choose the number of participants. The scavenger hunt will send participants traveling through the Borough of Middletown, either by automobile or by foot, to hunt for items on a prepared list. During the scavenger hunt, participants will also be able to enjoy Middletown’s historic homes, holiday lights, and holiday decorations displayed by residents. Lancaster Author Pens New Book During the shutdown in spring 2020, freelance writer Michael C. Upton took the opportunity to pen a travel guide of his home, Lancaster County. Pulling from more than 20 years of experience writing feature stories, interviews and reviews, Upton compiled 50 locally-inspired tips for those traveling to Lancaster County in his new book, “Greater Than a Tourist Lancaster County.” Over the years, Upton cultivated relationships with business owners, artists and community leaders, providing him with a unique perspective of Lancaster

County. In “Greater Than a Tourist - Lancaster County,” Upton avoids sending visitors to everyday tourist attractions and shares insights into the area’s history, attractions and natural beauty. From Instagramworthy spots along the backroads of rural farmland to personal accounts of some the area’s top dining experiences, Upton shows visitors how to experience the best Lancaster County has to offer. Print and electronic versions of the book are now available. For more information, readers may email info.somepro@gmail.com.
