Immersed In An Interactive Wonderland The Train Guys Prepare Holiday Exhibit By Chelsea Peifer
The Train Guys are back at work setting up an elaborate, interactive miniature train display for the public in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. The group of approximately 20 volunteers began construction in mid-October for the final product to make its public debut from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3. “We think for a temporary Christmas display that this is the biggest on the East Coast,” said Train Guy Craig Coble. O-gauge trains run through detailed towns decorated for the holidays, and G-scale and standard-gauge trains and accessories are also featured. The interactive elements of the display, which has upwards of 50 push buttons, are one of the things that Coble said visitors tend
to most appreciate. Several new push button accessories have been added for 2019, as well as new track loops, a third level of track, a police station, a flying saucer abducting a cow, and enhancements to the perennially popular circus setup. “Last year was our best year ever. We had well over 4,600 visitors, and we’re hoping for even more this year,” Coble stated. Costumed greeters - such as a railroad police officer and an engineer - track attendance and interact with guests at the event. Historical Elizabethtown buildings are part of the setup, such as a miniature version of the Klein Chocolate Company stadium, which was built in Elizabethtown in 1919. “Most of the volunteers have a lot of history knowledge, whether it’s about real railroads, toy trains, or Elizabethtown itself,” noted Coble. “And all of those pieces of history link to so many others.” See The Train Guys pg 3
The Train Guys, dedicated volunteers ranging from teenagers to retirees, invite the public to view an interactive miniature train display in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library on select dates from Dec. 3 through 30. Admission is by donation, with all proceeds benefiting the library.

Friday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. a change from previous years, when it was a Saturday morning event. Guests will arrive to complimentary holidays treats to nibble and hot mulled cider to sip as they visit the 20-plus vendors on all three levels of the youth center. The offerings are unique and local, with most of the vendors returning year after year to set up shop at the Cornerstone event. The selection will include children’s toys, whimsical creations, soy candles, CBD products, books by a local author, and more. For the returning vendors, this is a much anticipated annual event, often described as one of their favorites. Meanwhile across town, the lights will be on at Spence Candies, 558 E. High St., Elizabethtown, and a portion of the business’ sales for the evening will benefit Cornerstone. Spence Candies has partnered with Cornerstone for every Bring the Holidays Home shopping event. Joining this year’s event at Cornerstone and keeping with the holiday theme will be the Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) 2020 Mini-THON captains. They will welcome attendees to purchase dozen-size boxes of Christmas cookies to benefit Four Diamonds.

Local favorite Fuego Latino will also be on-site at Cornerstone to offer a selection of its soups and empanadas for shoppers to purchase. “Aside from our annual spring banquet, this is one of our favorite events,” said Laurie Shepler, Cornerstone associate director. “It’s an opportunity to welcome the community into the youth center, to share the joy of Christmas, and to support local business, and then, in turn, vendors offer a portion of their sales to Cornerstone.” Coupled with the shopping event is Cornerstone’s annual poinsettia sale. While the preordered poinsettias will be available for pickup and payment, more than 100 poinsettias of multiple varieties will be available for purchase throughout the event. In the Café level of Cornerstone, a drawing for a 10-inch pot with a five-plant red poinsettia will be available for attendees to enter to win. Cornerstone Youth Center, now in its 21st year, opens its doors to all youths in grades seven to 12 for after-school and Friday evening hours. Cornerstone seeks to offer a safe, fun place where youths can build trusted relationships and realize the strong foundation for their lives. Tree Sales from pg 1 days a week through Friday, Dec. 20. Hours will be noon to 9 p.m. on Sundays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays. Cash and credit cards will be accepted forms of payment. Elizabethtown Rotary Club tree sale chair Tim Haak said that the selection will once again include Fraser and Douglas firs, ranging from tabletop size to 9 feet tall. Proceeds from the tree sale will benefit the various community projects of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club. “The funds our generous sponsors provide pay for the wholesale price of the trees we buy right from the tree farm upstate,” explained Haak. “So each tree we sell is pure profit, which goes right back to the various community projects our Rotary Club supports.” According to Haak, the club members are avid supporters of GEARS, Elizabeth-
town Area Communities That Care, Hope Within Ministries, Rheems Fire Department, Elizabethtown Fire Company, Destination Imagination, Elizabethtown Boys Club, Attollo, Junior Achievement, Cornerstone Youth Center, Wittel Farm Growing Project, Elizabethtown Area School District, Northwest Emergency Medical Services, Mini-THON, and ECHOS. Club members and community partners take turns working shifts to sell trees, help to load and unload the trees, and assist with setup and teardown for the sale. The tree sale has been an Elizabethtown Rotary Club tradition for approximately 28 years, and it is one of the group’s largest fundraisers. Volunteer John Gantz worked for Amtrak for 33 and a half years and has been part of The Train Guys for seven years. “It’s all about the kids,” said Gantz. “It’s good for me to be with a good group of guys here and just seeing the kids enjoy it all every year.” Aidan Mollohan, 17, said that this is his sixth year helping The Train Guys. He plans to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer and has been able to glean wisdom from engineers among the crew. “It’s also helped me to learn a lot about carpentry and wiring. A number of our members are electricians,” Aidan commented. Retired industrial arts teacher Ken Stehman has enjoyed working with The Train Guys since he was recruited by Coble seven years ago. “I just enjoy tinkering with things and the problem solving that’s involved,” said Stehman. “We always end up with new challenges, because it’s never the same layout.” The 2019 display will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in December; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 7, 14, and 21; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28. The exhibit will also be open from 6 to 8 p.m. for Second Friday on Dec. 13 and on Mondays, Dec. 23 and

Information from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs says that small businesses, or firms with fewer than 500 workers, accounted for 99.7% of businesses in 2016, the most recent year for data. Firms with fewer than 100 workers accounted for 98.2% of companies. Thanks to their influence and reach, small businesses have the potential to impact local communities in numerous ways. Small businesses employ local residents. According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, small businesses accounted for 61.8% of net new jobs in the United States between 1993 and 2016. Small businesses are innovative. The SBA notes that small businesses represent about 96% of employer firms in high-patenting manufacturing industries. That suggests that small businesses are full of new ideas.
Small businesses support local charities. Many local businesses give to charity, particularly local charities. Some donate money while others may offer their professional services or event spaces, each of which can be particularly helpful to local communities. Small businesses contribute to community identity. Small businesses contribute to the charm and character of a town or city. Many local businesses make up the fabric of a town, and towns are known and loved for the businesses that have endured. Small businesses help the environment. Shopping locally means consumers do not have to travel far to get their goods and services. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s research report on walkable downtown centers found small businesses encourage walking and cycling, helping to reduce air pollution from vehicles. Small businesses keep money
in communities. Local businesses keep disposable income and tax money within their communities. Business tax money remains local and can support schools, roads, and municipal services. Local small businesses help to keep cities and towns prosperous and humming along. Such establishments can help build a sense of community and forge lasting relationships. Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities. In the United States, the majority of businesses in operation are classified as small businesses, according to data from the Small Business Administration. Consumers can express their appreciation for the small businesses in their communities in various ways. Here are eight ways to support local businesses: 1. Shop at small businesses regularly. 2 . Use social media to give your recommendations on small
businesses that go above and beyond in quality and service. 3. Speak with business owners about your experience as a customer, sharing insight about both good and bad experiences. 4. Encourage your family or friends to make small business shopping a larger part of their overall spending plan. 5 . Exhibit Features Student Art Eighteen Elizabethtown Area High School students were chosen to have their work featured at Millersville University’s Studio for Students Youth Art Exhibit in November. Featured artists include Nicole Bender, Angela CostaOuimet, Alex DeFlavia, Stephanie DeJesus, Krimson Dougherty, Rogan English, Dylan Gulden, Kathryn Hackenberg, Ellen Laszakovits, Nicki Lathrop, Noelia Morales, Sophia Pirozzi, Makenna Smith, Elizabeth Stiles, Benjamin Wohlbowne, Trinity Young, Makayla Zeager, and Maya Zimmerman. The student work is on display at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. An artist reception was held at the center in early November for the students and their families. The purpose of the Studio for Stu-
dents Youth Art program is to acknowledge and inspire student commitment to the arts, to offer students the opportunity to present their work in a gallery setting, and to increase understanding and appreciation for the arts among members of the community. The Elizabethtown Area School District offers an array of visual art courses that seek to maximize the creative potential of its students and help them become artists in their own right. In September, the Pennsylvania Art Education Association (PAEA) recognized the Elizabethtown Area School District for its outstanding commitment to visual arts education with the endorsement of Outstanding Visual Arts Community 2019. One of PAEA’s award criteria is “highly visible programs” like the Millersville exhibit.

“Through the Door,” an exhibit from local artist Gail Whatmore, will be on display in the North Gallery at Mulberry Art Studios during the month of December. The public is invited to meet the artist at a First Friday opening reception on Dec. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, and holds regular gallery hours on weekdays. Whatmore, a native of Lancaster County, has always had a love for the arts, which she inherited from her father, whose intricate works still hang in her fami-
ly’s home. Following graduation, Whatmore pursued a career in business. However, while she was working with her own three children during their school years, she found herself drawn back to the arts. The inspiration for the “Through the Door” collection is the Christmas season. Whatmore enjoyed depicting Saint Nicholas in different eras and incorporating artists of that same time period in the scene. Ralph E. Balchunas, Jr. June 22, 1967-November 8, 2019 Ralph E. Balchunas, Jr. passed away on November 8, 2019, at home after battling many months from a lung disorder of unknown cause. He passed peacefully with his Mom close beside him. He was preceded in death by his Dad, Ralph Sr., who passed on February 21, 2019. In his own words, Ralph said that all the outdoor activities that he shared with his Dad were the most precious times he experienced in his life. He also said in his dedication to his Dad at his Dad’s memorial service, that his Father taught, shared, helped and parented him so well that he could not have asked for a better Father. He further stated that they loved each other so much they were almost the same person, and the most important thing was that his Dad was his Best Friend. Ralph graduated from Elizabethtown High School and was employed at Turkey Hill Dairy, Brother’s Pizza Shops, and Arnold’s Logistics. In 2005, he returned to live with his parents as he became disabled with fibromyalgia and its related issues. Ralph loved outdoor activities, especially geese and deer hunting. He and his Dad hand-crafted many goose decoys and were well known for their expertise in waterfowl hunting. He enjoyed sport with his firearms and was dedicated to the Second Amendment. He also enjoyed snowmobiling in Pennsylvania and New York. He was especially proud of his Mustang. He loved rock music and once had the opportunity to meet all the band members of Queensryche, his favorite musical group. He was thrilled and excited about the experience and celebrated by buying his parents a pizza at 3:00am after the show! Ralph is survived by his beloved Mother, Kay Balchunas. He once gave her the following Christmas greeting: “When I think of all the times in my life that you’ve been there for me, I realize just how forunate I am to have a Mom like you. You’ve given me unending strength, support and encouragement. I often wish there were some way I could give you even half the love you’ve given me. That’s why Christmas is so important - for the closeness it brings and for the chance to tell you how much I Love You. Merry Christmas, Mom. Love Your Son.” In the preceding weeks before his passing, he wished to tell his estranged adopted daughter Nicole that he loved her very much and cherished all the fun times they had together, especially taking her fishing, golfing, and goose hunting. Ralph was blessed to have many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout his lifetime. He was especially fond of the “kids” that came to visit Uncle Ralph and Auntie Kay. He loved watching his Dad interact with the young folks as they went riding in the family golf cart. His Dad and our Dear Lord surely welcomed him in Heaven with loving open arms. A memorial service will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Rifle Association. Services are being handled by the Murphy Funeral Home, McSherrytown, PA R051664

Artist Scott Higgins, who created drawings for the “We Love Our Pets” exhibit last April at Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster, will return to the gallery for a solo show in December. “Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes,” which features charcoal animal portraits, will open on Dec. 6 with a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Higgins created the works with charcoal, each piece taking approximately 12 to 15 hours to create. The drawings look very realistic, but upon closer inspection viewers can see the artistic marks. Higgins is a York-based artist who grew up in Lancaster and has been an artist practically his entire life. He said that he finds daily inspiration in his pets and how they make him feel. Knowing the special bond people have with the pets in their lives makes him feel honored to create a piece for a client. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. James Sutton, and moderator Keith Weaver. According to Eshleman, the purposes of the trip included establishing a relationship between Meserete Kristos Church (MKC) and LMC, which had spawned MKC, and offering an opportunity for the LMC leaders to learn from MKC leaders. During an
Tewodros Beyene (right), who recently ended his tenure as president of Meserete Kristos Church in Ethiopia, spoke with Keith Weaver (left), moderator for LMC - a fellowship of Anabaptist churches, and LMC bishop Alvin Motley in Bishoftu, Ethiopia, during a learning trip held from Aug. 27 to Sept. 6.
introduction of several LMC leaders to MKC’s administrative staff at a regional office of MKC, former MKC president Tewodros Beyene said it was meaningful to him that the LMC leaders sought to learn from MKC as he has observed that Europeans and North Americans usually visit to provide instruction. The plan for the trip to Ethiopia originated while MKC vice president Kelbessa Muleta and the chair of the Meserete Kristos College Board were in the U.S. in 2018 on a fundraising and promotional tour. LMC leaders were received as honorary delegates at the MKC General Assembly Meeting, during which a procedural vote for the church’s presidential election resulted in the conclusion of Beyene’s tenure as president of the church. After the vote, Beyene asked for a basin and pitcher to be placed on the stage and for incoming president Desalegn Abede to be seated on the stage. Beyene then washed Abede’s feet. Kauffman visited a church in Adama, formerly known as
Nazareth. En route, his group drove past sites where Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) worker Chester Wenger had founded a school and where EMM worked Rohrer Eshleman had founded a hospital. Among the topics discussed by LMC and MKC leaders during the trip was MKC’s adaptive administrative structure, which spans regions and various language groups throughout Ethiopia. Although Mennonites were involved in relief work in Ethiopia since 1945, it was not until late 1947 that EMM began the evangelistic work that led to the founding of MKC. Today MKC has more than 600,000 worshippers.

The modern performing arts center will provide a venue to foster myriad types of artistic expression, both for the school’s students and for community partners otherwise unaffiliated with Country Day. School Holds Assembly Rheems Elementary School celebrated Fire Prevention Month on Oct. 25 with an assembly focusing on the importance of being prepared in the event of an emergency. As part of a special program, representatives of the Rheems Fire Department held an assembly to share important safety tips. Students learned how to call 911; the importance of smoke detectors; how to stop, drop, roll, and cover their face; and how to develop an escape plan. In addition, a member of the department dressed in his fire gear to help alleviate the students’ fears in the case of an emergency. Once the program was over, the students went out to the parking lot, where a fire truck was on location. The students learned about all the different tools, devices, and hoses on the truck and what they are used for in firefighting. Representing the Rheems Fire
