Each December, train lovers of all ages flock to Elizabethtown to enjoy two elaborate miniature train displays located about a mile and a half apart from each other: the Train Guys at the Elizabethtown Public Library and the Masonic Village & Elizabethtown (MV&E) Model Railroad Club. The Train Guys, comprising approximately 20 volunteers, have been at work since October setting up a train display that fills the basement of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St. O-gauge trains run through detailed towns decorated for the holidays, and there are areas featuring Gscale and standard-gauge trains and
accessories. Describing the display as highly interactive, Train Guy Craig Coble noted that it features 50 buttons for folks to press. “The trains range in age from 100 years old to brand new,” Coble noted. “ We’ll be showing things that are very unusual and appreciated by collectors and things that will appeal to children, such as Chuggington and Thomas.” This year, the east end of the display has been reconfigured to include an elevated line. Local business Groff’s Meats will be featured on a bi-level stock car. Train Guy Tom Matesevac noted that the club has featured an area business for years, and a limited number of the featured train cars are also available to purchase. Visitors may enter to win other train items in a silent auction and giveaway drawings. See Train Displays pg 12
The Masonic Village & Elizabethtown (MV&E) Model Railroad Club has added new features to its sprawling miniature train display, including an interactive button that guests can press to see smoke released from the control tower pictured as fire trucks come to its aid.
Three Trips Around The Planet Holiday Shopping Event Lifecycles Concludes To Support Cornerstone Fourth Season By Chelsea Peifer

Sometimes the wide-open road ahead can look impossible to conquer, but the leaders at Lifecycles aim to equip students to rise to meet whatever challenges may arise. Founded by Lee DeRemer, the nonprofit mentoring program is committed to building young men of character through bicycling and outdoor adventures. One of the ways Lifecycles accomplishes that is through an annual summer challenge ride, and this year was the first time that the program offered two trips. The first summer journey, dubbed the Extreme Challenge Ride, was designed for Lifecycles participants ready for an advanced See Lifecycles pg 5
Lifecycles offers free weekly bicycle rides for boys ages 12 to 18 at locations in Marietta, Landisville, and New Holland, along with weekend and summer challenge rides. At the close of its fourth season, the organization had tracked a total of more than 77,000 miles ridden by its students and volunteer leaders.

For a day, Elizabethtown Area Middle School students traded in algebra, history, and life science for career selection, personal branding, and credit scores as part of Junior Achievement’s YES! (Your Economic Success) program. The school-wide initiative aligned with the district’s Pathways program. The YES! program consisted of a series of activities intended to help the students gain an appreciation for the importance that financial and career decisions will play in their lives as young adults. Students rotated through six 40-minute stations manned by community volunteers. The main emphasis of the career component was discovering the connection between personal interests and strengths, opportunity, and education. The students explored career clusters like finance, health science, hospitality and tourism, architecture and construction, and information technology and the jobs associated with each cluster. The students also researched the importance of each cluster to
the world of work and leisure. The students also learned about career mapping and how to take advantage of developing a personal brand, a strong work ethic, and professionalism. They learned about these qualities’ impact on career success and promotion. As part of the personal finance instruction, the students learned how to establish personal financial goals, the advantages and disadvantages of using debt and credit cards, and the consequences of a positive or negative credit report. At the end of the day, the students gathered in the auditorium for Junior Achievement’s own version of the classic game show “Let’s Make a Deal” to receive prizes. The students competed against one another to answer questions about what they had learned during the day. Pictured on front: Elizabeth-

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer
Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the
like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday
John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. Tabor Community Services recently achieved national reaccreditation through the Council on Accreditation (COA) for the fifth consecutive time. Organizations pursue accreditation to demonstrate the implementation of best practice standards in the field of human services. COA evaluated all aspects of Tabor’s programs, services, management, and administration. Tabor has been accredited since 1998. COA accreditation is an objective, independent validation of an agency’s performance. The process involves a detailed review and analysis of an organization’s administration, management, and service delivery functions as compared to international standards of best practice. The standards driving accreditation are designed to ensure that services are well-coordinated, culturally competent, evidence-based, outcomes-oriented, and provided by a skilled and supported workforce. To achieve COA reaccreditation, Tabor first provided written evidence of compliance with the COA standards. After that, a group of specially trained volunteer peer reviewers confirmed adherence to these standards
during a series of on-site interviews with trustees, staff, and clients. Based on their findings, COA’s volunteer-based Accreditation Commission voted that Tabor Community Services had successfully met the criteria for reaccreditation. For the past 50 years, Tabor has been helping clients learn how to meet their housing and financial challenges, rebuild their lives, and contribute to the strength of the Lancaster community in the process. Tabor’s comprehensive array of programs and services include rapid re-housing for those experiencing homelessness, rental counseling to prevent homelessness, transitioning sheltered persons to permanent housing, supportive housing, budget counseling, financial literacy education, consumer credit counseling, firsttime home-buyer counseling, default mortgage counseling, counseling to achieve financial self-sufficiency, and matched savings accounts to help low-income families save for purchasing assets such as a home or education. For more information about Tabor, readers may visit www.tabornet.org.

As they move from site to site on the grounds, guests will learn how the printing press and production of books impacted cultural and religious life from the 1400s to the present. Examples of print material from the 1500s onward will be on display, including a 1529 Froschauer Bible that is part of the museum’s collection. In the Native American Longhouse, guests will learn

Make And Take With Santa Set The National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will host a holiday Make and Take With Santa on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon. Children of all ages are invited to make a holiday-themed
level of riding. A group of 10 teenage boys and six adult leaders spent one week navigating 330 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., covering more than 60 miles each day and taking in beautiful scenery along the Great Allegheny Passage. A second trip later in the summer to White Sulfur Springs in Bedford was designed as more of a camping trip with daily rides, rather than a trek from one destination to another. Heavy rainfall during that week added to the normal challenges attached to camping and riding. “It rained almost every day, but we just kept reminding the boys every day that attitude is everything,” DeRemer recalled. In addition to offering two summer rides, the 2018 Lifecycles season featured the introduction of a new weekly riding site that met at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Albert Vega, who had volunteered as a leader for the weekly rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Marietta and Landisville, approached DeRemer with the idea of starting another site in the eastern part of the county. “My truck was always full going up to Marietta, and I told Lee that it would be cool to expand,” Vega recalled. “He asked if I’d be willing to lead it, so I began recruiting leaders.” Vega said that is especially amazing to see boys who start out saying that something is too hard go on to conquer the particular ride or obstacle. “We climbed for two days (during the Extreme Challenge Ride), and when we got to mile marker zero in D.C., all the boys were saying, ‘We accomplished it!’” Vega said. “That was really neat, and I love watching the boys see things they’d probably never see unless they were off the grid.” The Garden Spot site led rides on Wednesday evenings from April through
November, but Vega said the schedule for 2019 is still in the works. Individuals interested in participating at any of the sites may visit www.lifecyclesteam.org to learn more. “The doors are always open,” DeRemer stated. Rides take place on a weekly basis with extra rides on Saturdays from time to time. Bicycles and helmets are provided, along with a meal. Participation is free and open to boys ages 12 to 18. Following a holiday break, Lifecycles will resume in January with its indoor program on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS), 105 Fairview Ave., Mount Joy. As Lifecycles wrapped up its fourth year of operations, DeRemer said that thus far the organization has tracked a total of more than 77,000 miles ridden equivalent to more than three times around the planet - and over 22,000 volunteer hours and 10,000 meals served. “I’m just floored by this, and we’re already talking about year five,” shared DeRemer. In 2019, Lifecycles plans to implement a teenage bicycling safety certification for those interested. “We have been educating them but wanted to be able to give an official certification,” DeRemer explained. It will allow participants to take a test and become certified through a practicum experience. The summer Extreme Challenge Ride will cover 400 miles from Lancaster to Boston. “If you’re really ready, we’ll give you an experience you won’t forget,” said DeRemer. To inquire about volunteering at any of the locations, readers may email director@lifecyclesteam.org or call 717-586-2511. “We always love to have new volunteers of any age and riding ability,” remarked DeRemer.

Upcycled items will make up just one portion of the selection of handmade products at this year’s Christmas Market at Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. Organizer Kristi Elkner said that the definition of upcycle is to reuse discarded objects or materials to create a product of a higher quality or value than the original. “I love that. Taking something that someone might not use anymore and making it into lots of new things people can use,” Elkner remarked. Elkner compared the process of upcycling to the beloved children’s book “Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree.” In it, author Robert E. Barry tells the story of a Christmas tree that is too tall to fit in Mr. Willowby’s parlor, so he cuts off and discards the top - only for that tree to travel and get shortened again and again to be placed into the homes of families of bears, rabbits, and mice. In a similar fashion, Elkner gave the example of how people from Donegal Presbyterian - ranging in age from 9 to 87 - upcycled gently worn shirts and clothing into aprons, napkins, tote bags, and sachets that will be available to purchase at the Christmas Market. Even the buttons from the shirts were utilized for other projects. Old sheet music was transformed into holiday ornaments and decorative items. “It’s just one thing that keeps on going,” said Elkner. This year’s event is set to take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the church. All of the items for sale will be original, handmade wares including fiber arts, jewelry, soaps, face scrubs, lip balm, bath
bombs, kitchen products, linens, glass and wooden décor, bows, children’s toys, teacher gifts, catnip mats and toys, dog biscuits and bandannas, oven mitts, hats, mittens, accessories, hand-knit shawls, greeting cards, and an assortment of baked goods, preserves, and candy. Everything will be arranged in an easyto-browse boutique style in the fellowship hall, which overlooks the Donegal springs. Elkner noted that in planning for the event, which takes place every other year, organizers aim to ensure that the bulk of the selection will be new items while still including a few favorites from past years. Christmas crackers, for instance, were a previous hit that will be back. The crackers consist of a short cardboard tube wrapped in colorful paper and twisted at both ends to use as stocking stuffers or gift toppers. Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted as forms of payment. All proceeds from the Christmas Market will go toward the church’s local missions fund, which is used to support efforts such as short-term housing for individuals in need, Mount Joy Food Bank, East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank, and Hands Across the Street at Columbia Presbyterian Church. SM Johns & Son Construction in Mount Joy expanded its garage and now offers automotive services in addition to working on construction jobs. Representing the business are (front, from left) Preston Lindeman, Ethan Snyder, Justin Olweiler, (back) Jim Ammon, Randy Martin, Jeff Vuxta, Shawn Kreider, Brad Vuxta, Tony Noll, Brian Schreffler, Morgan DeJesus, Brian Drager, Jon Carson, owner Steve Johns, (not pictured) Cameron Johns, Ken Johns, Cheryl Ammon, and Jeff Flanders. SM Johns & Son Construction, LLC, 645 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, has announced that the garage that was used to maintain its fleet and equipment has expanded to allow the business to offer auto, truck, equipment, trailer, and camper repairs to outside customers. The business has a team of three mechanics to handle inspections, repairs, and maintenance for all types of vehicles. Owner Steven M. Johns worked in excavating, paving, and sales for 13 years prior to starting SM Johns & Son Construction in 2010. Beth Johns bought the first skid loader on her own at an auction because Steve was unable to attend. Steve and his son, Cameron, bought the first truck for the business and worked for two months to repair rust and mechanics to get it road worthy. They then drove it to Baltimore to purchase the business’s first trailer, a trip that they remember as being an adventure, complete with their vehicle blowing two tires on the way. The business started with small excavation jobs. With each job, funds were saved toward building the business and adding equipment. That model continues to today, with each job helping to add to the equipment and business. Today the company has a fleet of dump trucks, pickup trucks, trailers, mini excavators, trackhoes, rollers, and more. Passersby will see crews from SM Johns & Son Construction working on sidewalks in the area, at the Amtrak station in Mount Joy, and at many other local sites. The business has completed work at Dutch Wonderland, Historic St. Mary’s Church in Lancaster, Fire Department Mount Joy, and other residential and commercial sites in Lancaster and York counties. SM Johns & Son Construction offers a number of services for homeowners and commercial properties. In the area of excavation, the business completes small to large residential, commercial, and industrial projects, as well as driveways, regrading, pond work, stormwater projects, and tasks related to utilities. The business is also at the ready for emergency situations involving utilities such as water and sewer, as well as sinkholes. Concrete jobs are part of the company’s repertoire, with examples including curbs and sidewalks, walls, stamped concrete, patios, and driveways. The business is also able to complete residential, commercial, and industrial general construction jobs. Complete construction is available, including framing, electrical work, plumbing, HVAC jobs, drywall installation, flooring, and roofing from start to finish. Services are available for additions, remodeling, kitchens and baths, basements, decks and patios, and hardscape. The company’s automotive services are offered for cars, trucks, medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and campers. In addition to state and emissions inspections,
services are available for lube, oil, and filter; air conditioning; tires; and hydraulic hoses. The company also offers in-house alignments, diagnostics, and fabrication and welding. Annual Holiday Home Tour Slated
Servant Stage from pg 1 Servant Stage Company will present Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” across Lancaster County, with nearly 40 performances set at local theaters, churches, retirement homes, and schools. The show’s music is directed by Johnathan Bauer and underscored by pairings of harp, cello, guitar, and penny whistle, played live at select performances by Emily Aziza and Tony Marini. First produced by Servant Stage in 2015, this original adaptation is unique in that every word is taken from Dickens’ text, bringing the holiday classic to life through the collaborative storytelling of eight performers, all playing multiple roles. Dickens’ text will be interspersed with portions of musical narration set to the tunes of classic Christmas carols with original lyrics by Jon Rider, also playing the part of Scrooge.
All performances are offered as pay-what-you-will in keeping with Servant Stage’s mission to make performances accessible to everyone in the community. The show will tour across Lancaster County through Sunday, Dec. 23, including performances at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, Dec. 2, and at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from Friday, Dec. 14, through Sunday, Dec. 23. To reserve tickets or for more information, readers may visit www.ServantStageCompany.com or call 717-455-0255.
