Elizabethtown will be “Rock’In the Holidays” when GEARS hosts the 2022 Elizabethtown Holiday Parade presented by Mars Wrigley. The parade will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10.
“We’re encouraging people to really embrace the theme, with more music, more festivity, really getting loud,” said Lee Eckert, program coordinator for GEARS. “We’re going to have the Elizabethtown High School and Middle School bands kicking off the parade, and that’s a great way to start a parade.”
Other entries in the parade will include local police and fire departments, churches, Scout troops and local businesses. “We have three groups that will be having horses in
the parade,” Eckert stated. “We’ll have horses and carriages and people riding horses.”
The parade will also include a variety of floats as well as some surprises, he shared. “Santa always ends the parade, and he’ll be escorted by some special guests,” Eckert teased.
Children will be invited to visit with Santa in the square until 7 p.m. after the parade. Santa will also be making multiple appearances in the square throughout the month of December. “We’re also partnering with the Elizabethtown Library, and Santa will be doing story time from 6 to 7 p.m. on (Thursdays) Dec. 8, 15 and 22,” Eckert said.
The parade will travel on Market Street from West Bainbridge Street to Winnemore and Mechanics alleys.
Although the parade starts at 4 p.m., Eckert recommended arriving by 3 or 3:30 p.m. to secure a good viewing spot. “We usually get a good turnout,” he said. “We’re excited to have Mars Wrigley stepping up as a sponsor for the parade, and they’ve committed to sponsoring it for at least the next three years.”
He said the parade is a great way to usher in the holiday season, adding, “It’s really cool to see all the churches and groups, all the businesses and people in the community coming together for something that promotes the small-town, hometown feel of Elizabethtown.”

How does a company stay in business for 95 years? For Jack Hostetter, who owns JB Hostetter and Sons with his brother, Kent, the answer comes down to two words: customer service.
“It’s all about relationships,” said Jack, who is the president of the business, located at 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy. “It’s about getting to know your customers, and, if you want to provide customer service to the level we want, it’s all about hiring good people.” See Hostetter’s pg 2

The business opened in 1927 when Joseph B. Hostetter - Jack and Kent’s grandfather - retired from farming in Rapho Township and purchased Gabe Moyer’s Hardware Store on West Donegal Street in Mount Joy. Two years later, he purchased Brown Brothers Hardware at 35 W. Main St. In 1963, the company incorporated as JB Hostetter and Sons, and in 1970, the business joined the True Value Hardware Wholesale Cooperative, which currently has more than 5,000 member stores. In 1972, the company opened a second location at 93 E. Main St., acquiring the former H.S. Newcomer and Sons hardware store. Jack and Kent helped to run this location, along with their father, Arthur, and their mother, Clara. Arthur, however, envisioned something
even bigger.
“It was always my dad’s vision to move the store to a larger location,” Jack recalled, noting that when Arthur found out that the 5-acre property at 1225 W. Main St. was for sale, he proposed the idea of combining the two stores in Mount Joy into one. The current location opened on July 5, 1984.
Over the years, the store has expanded several times, including increasing the parking lot size and adding a rental department, greenhouse and large warehouse space to reach its current size of 64,000 square feet.
Jack and Kent, who is the company vice president, employ about 65 people. Along with an emphasis on customer service, Jack attributes the store’s longevity to what shoppers can find on the shelves. “One of the things that makes us unique is we have such a large variety - greenhouse, rentals, paint, mower repair, housewares, major appliance repair,” he commented. “We cut keys and do some locksmith work. We do a tremendous amount of screen and window repair. We do a significant business in used appliance and used lawn equipment sales. … I’m even amazed sometimes at some of

the things we have in here.”
JB Hostetter & Sons has also developed a reputation for giving back to the community, whether by allowing groups to hold car washes or chicken barbecues in the parking lot or by hosting regular blood drives at the store.
“We’re part of the community, and we want to help other organizations,” Jack said. “If they have the initiative and work ethic to go out and make money, why not help them with that
opportunity?”
As he looks toward celebrating a century in business, Jack emphasized that he’s grateful for loyal customers over the years as well as loyal employees. He also welcomes newcomers who stop in to shop, noting, “Two things I hear from people when they come into the store for the first time are, ‘Growing up, we used to have a store like this, but it’s not there anymore’ and ‘You guys have everything here.’”

from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.
The 2022 fair will feature 45 nonprofit organizations offering environmentally friendly and ethically sourced gifts, along with food and beverages from local eateries and food trucks. Father Christmas will be present for pictures, visits, and interactive story reading, and a number of children’s authors will be on-site.
Several organizations will be at the fair for the first time this year, including the fledgling Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence, which is starting a Lancaster chapter. The group held its first event at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church in September. At the fair, representatives hope to offer education and raise both funds and awareness. “There have been 75 gun homicides in the last 10 years in Lancaster County,” said representative Sue Heilman, who added the group hopes to
influence young people with a pledge concerning firearms.
Josiah Groff started Big Picture Soccer three years ago when he and his wife were serving at an orphanage in Juarez, Mexico. “We work with local leaders in communities in poverty,” said Groff, who now lives in Lancaster. “We give them resources and training so they are able to start soccer clubs for the youth in those communities.” According to Groff, the goal is to use soccer clubs to build character, inspire hope, and provide opportunities. Big Picture has a club in Uganda, and Groff is working to start a club in Lancaster city that will give immigrant and refugee populations opportunities to connect with the community. Attendees at the fair can help Big Picture by sponsoring teams or purchasing equipment.

David agreed, recalling, “She was (at the dance studio) six days a week.” Knowing the costs of lessons, costumes, and competitions, Libby’s parents decided to raise money to provide scholarships for dance students. Live Like Libby scholarships are available for eligible students

Brooke said that the name was chosen based on chalk messages written by Libby’s fellow John R. Bonfield Elementary students. “It was perfect for her (because) she was so full of joy and life and kind to everyone,” said Brooke.

Food, fun, art and an auction will highlight the Maytown Historical Society’s Christmas Gala. The event will be held on Thursday, Dec. 15, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 N. Queen St., Maytown, beginning at 6 p.m.
This will be the first time the annual event has been held since 2019, said Janie Garber, treasurer of the historical society. “We always have a really great meal,” Garber stated, noting that the dinner will be catered by Country Home. The dinner will be served family style and will include tossed salad, stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, beverages and homemade pies with ice cream.
After dinner, entertainment will be provided by artist Elva Hurst, who will do a “chalk talk.” “She will create a picture of our choice, and as she is drawing the picture, she will be speaking about it,” Garber explained. Hurst is known for her motivational, entertaining and inspiring talks. At the gala, she will complete a farm memories drawing. She finishes her work with a black light and colored light show that brings the work to life. “She’ll create a large picture, and then we’re going to turn around and auction it off to raise money for the historical society,” Garber
said.
Additional items to be auctioned off include a table runner hand-quilted by Deb Gepfer and a “chunky blanket,” made with thicker, heavier yarn, created by Garber.
“We also have selected a few items from our museum storage, and we’re bringing them out for the auction,” Garber said. The items will include Maytown pottery and a basket.
Proceeds from the gala will benefit the Maytown Historical Society’s museum and the society’s future expansion. “People have been so gracious in donating things to us, and now we
need to expand,” Garber said, noting that money will also help with the society’s operating costs.
She encourages everyone to come to the gala for a fun night out. “It’s good food, lots of fellowship with neighbors and the opportunity to support a community organization,” she said.
Tickets for the gala will be sold at the Maytown Post Office, 1 W. High St., from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, or may be purchased by calling Linda Good at 717-725-2437.

A Night Of Christmas Fun
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The members of the program team at Ruhl’s Church are always looking for ways to connect with the community. Their brainstorming led to A Night of Christmas Fun, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.
The evening will begin with Christmas carols and the reading of a short book telling the Christmas story. Each child who attends will be invited to decorate a premade gingerbread house, created from graham crackers. All decorations will be provided to take home a complete house.
A table will also be set up for children who finish early to color wooden Christmas ornaments or play games. The night will end with a
treat of milk and a Christmas cookie.
A Night of Christmas Fun is open to everyone, said Steph Heisey, who is organizing the event with Beverly Snavley. “It’s a family event,” she stated. “It’s something for families to do together. It’s bringing back old Christmas traditions and giving people the chance to spend time together at the holidays, doing something fun together.”
Ruhl’s Church regularly holds community events throughout the year, including dinners, music nights, a summer picnic and God’s Clothing Closet, a clothing giveaway.
All of these events help the members of the congregation fulfill the church’s mission, said Snavely. “I think that’s what Jesus requires of us - to do for others, to help others
and to share His love,” she stated. “That’s what He wants from us, and this is a way we can answer that call.”
There is no charge for A Night of Christmas Fun, but reservations are requested to ensure there are enough
Holiday Meal Delivery Set
The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.
Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.
The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families across Lan-
caster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann Bakeries, Giant Foods, Pepperidge Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America.
In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.
Age-Friendly Summit Set
The virtual Age-Friendly Lancaster City Summit will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Dec. 7. During the program, viewers will learn about the Lancaster City Age-Friendly Action Plan, which was approved in January.
The Lancaster City AgeFriendly Action Plan includes four ongoing Action Team Projects. The projects are Housing Creation and Preservation, Vision Zero and Public Space Design, Promoting Intergenerational Connec-
tions, and Communication Coordination and Outreach. Attendees will participate in a breakout discussion concerning one of the four Action Team Projects, contribute ideas that may enhance and support the Action Plan, and learn how to incorporate age-friendly practices in their initiatives in the coming year.
For details and registration, visit www. eventbrite.com. To learn more, contact agefriendly lanc@gmail.com.
LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717-5698521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.

MCCL Sets Christmas Concert Series
The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has announced its 2022 Christmas concert series.
Concerts will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at Historic St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster; Sunday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster; and Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 1801 Oregon Pike, Lancaster.
Guests will experience the retelling of the birth of Jesus through song and Scripture. Several selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” including a congregational sing-along of the “Hallelujah” chorus, will be interspersed throughout a varied program of familiar
favorites, multicultural songs, and bluegrass-infused selections from Tim Sharp’s Angel Band. Singers will share music in many languages, which they learned and practiced with native Spanish, French, Ukrainian, and S’gaw Karen speakers. The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster will perform several Christmas concerts.
Creative Works of Lancaster will present “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera,” a musical sock puppet parody of the movie “Jaws,” on Friday, Dec. 9, at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., with performances at 6, 8 and 10 p.m.
On hiatus since “Sock Puppet Star Wars: The Skywalker Sock-a,” in December 2018, the Creative Works sock puppets will go back in the water 10 years after the premiere of “Jaws to the World: A Holi-
day Sock Opera” in 2012 at the Lancaster Dispensing Company.
“Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” will include singing sharks and cardboard boats as five actor-puppeteers wield a cast of more than 30 custom-designed, handmade sock puppets. Originally written by playwright and former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein, the script has been newly updated and refreshed with Erich’s blessing by current board member Alexander Bannon. Musical
director Joshua Schwartz from the original production will return to lead the cast’s performances of rock and pop music and Christmas carols.
Creative Works’ pay what you decide (PWYD) ticketing model guarantees that no one will be turned away due to financial limitations. Audience members are asked to reserve a ticket in advance and pay what they think the experience was worth after the performance.
Tickets can be reserved at www.zoetropolis.com.
Those who reserve a ticket will be sent a PWYD link after the performances. Tickets may also be available at the door, but reservations are encouraged.
Creative Works of Lancaster receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Learn more about Creative Works at www.creativelancaster.org.
The Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will hold open houses on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Attendees will be able to watch trains of various scales running on 1,600 feet of track in seven display areas; there will be trains overhead, as
well. The displays aim to provide authentic detail and realism, and there have been changes in every layout.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
The Railroad Club building is on Freemason Drive on the grounds of Masonic Village at Elizabethtown. Once on the campus, follow the direction-
al signs. Ample parking is available.
For more information, call 717-287-2086 or visit www.mvemodelrrclub.com or www.facebook.com/Masonic villageMRRC. Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club was founded in 1997, and membership is open to the community. New members are welcome, and interested individuals may talk to any club member at the open houses.

Christmas Rolls Into The Railroad Museum
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will once again welcome the holiday season with its annual Christmas With the Conductor events on Saturdays, Dec. 3 and 10, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be a set fee per child in addition to regular museum admission, and the activity is recommended for children over the age of 3.
As guests arrive at the museum, a conductor will greet them in the lobby and lead them to one of many historic railroad cars. Once inside, the conductor will read the Christmas story “The Polar Express” to children. After the story is finished, the conductor will take the party to Jack Frost Station, where everyone will decorate their own gingerbread cookies and receive a small goodie bag to wrap up the event.
Christmas With the Conductor is a part of the Railroad Museum’s Home for the Holidays event, which is included in museum admission. On both days of the event, the museum will be filled with costumed interpreters in historically accurate garb, hands-on activities will be available in Stewart Junction railway education center, and cookies and
hot chocolate will be offered in the lobby while supplies last.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania began hosting Christmas With the Conductor in 2005, with the goal of using the classic tale of “The Polar Express” and historic train cars to promote literacy in children and celebrate the holidays.
“The kids love getting their tickets punched. The event really captures the excitement of going on a trip for the holidays,” said Elizabeth Myers, program coordinator at the museum.
“They always have so much energy, especially after the cookies and icing at the end!”
Guests will have an opportunity to participate in many other seasonal activities before and after Christmas With the Conductor: live holiday music will be played throughout the museum, messages will be telegraphed to the North Pole, and children may take a photo with Santa.
“My favorite part is always the live music. As you walk around and look at the historic locomotives, the environment and background gives the museum so much extra life,” said Myers.
