A beloved holiday favorite, the tale follows embittered Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Brayton Alkinburgh, as he clings to his miserly ways and declares the joys of Christmas to be “Bah! Humbug!” Scrooge’s disheartened mentality is shaken up through the course of several events, including encounters with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future - portrayed by Emma Witman, Anastasia Hess, and Teresa Moore, respectively. Zac Snyder will play Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s employee. “I get to be the happiness of the show and spread cheer with my family,” said Zac, who lives in Columbia and attends Lancaster Catholic High School. This will be his fifth performance with SSC. Mrs. Cratchit will be portrayed by Julia Bono, who is making her SSC debut. “I love this show, and I was really interested in playing a character who is a lot older than me

All proceeds from the home tour will be used for community projects in Manheim, such as the upcoming Santa’s Helpers gift distribution. Each year WCM members shop for surprise Christmas gifts for children in need in the Manheim Central School District. Guidance counselors help to coordinate the effort so that families can remain anonymous, and each child fills out of a wish list with three needs and three wants. “I’ve known this house all of my life, and I’ve always wanted to live in it,” said Donna Hlavacek, referring to her home on East Ferdinand Street in Manheim. Faced in pink Indiana limestone, the mid-century Cape Cod was built in 1954 by Raymond Hollinger, the former owner of Hollinger’s Mill on South Oak Street, as a retirement residence for him and his wife. Donna grew up on South Oak Street and has fond memories of the house with the “stegosaurus wall” of stone alongside the driveway and walkway leading to the front entrance. The property will be one of nine featured on the annual Women’s Club of Manheim (WCM) Holiday Tour of Homes on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. “This is an iconic Manheim house, and
depending on your age you’ll remember it as something different,” remarked Donna. “If you’re my age, it’s the Hollinger house. If you’re younger than me, it’s the Graybill house, and there were a few other owners in between there, too.” Reid and Inda Graybill, who founded Graybill’s Tool and Die Inc. in Manheim, were the property’s most recent residents prior to when Donna and her husband, Ken, purchased it in 2017. Ken passed away in April. Though apprehensive about being part of the holiday home tour, Donna agreed to feature her home when a friend suggested she do so in honor of Ken and his love for the holiday season. Her home’s sunroom will showcase a collection of memories - Disney ornaments on the Christmas tree and other things Ken had collected with his children and grandchildren. Another room features Donna’s collection of original Stiegel glass pieces,

while decorations in the living room have led to her dubbing it the children’s Christmas room. In addition to Donna’s property, the self-guided tour will include stops at the homes of Chuck and Dolly Thompson, 285 Silverwood Drive, Lititz; Roman and Barbara Rusynko, 317 Silverwood Drive, Lititz; John and Jacqueline Phillips, 247 Silverwood Drive, Lititz; Mike and Shelby Korom, 6112 Bayberry Ave., Manheim; Ian and Melanie Nauman, 51 N. Hazel St., Manheim; and Jay Ralston and Rocco, 36 Market Square, Manheim. Waltz Vineyards Estate Winery, 1599 Old Line Road, Manheim, and REO Suites, 41-43 N. Main St., Manheim, will also be stops on the tour. Discounted tickets for the tour are available in advance from any WCM member or at the following Manheim locations: Shaub’s Dry Cleaning, 22 S. Main St.; Longenecker’s Hardware, 127 Doe Run Road; Divine Consign, 37 Market

the CCU offices at 717-230-9550. All album and concert proceeds will benefit the homelessness programs of Christian Churches United: HELP Ministries and Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven. HELP Ministries is a walk-in assistance office for people in crisis. The office seeks to prevent homelessness whenever possible and help those who are homeless to quickly find long-term housing. Short-term shelter access is available when necessary. In April, CCU and MSPC led a new initiative that places a HELP staff member at MSPC to directly connect with people living on the street. This staff member seeks to build relationships and help people find housing. Since the program’s beginning, 15 people have been helped to go directly from the street to long-term housing. More information is available at www.ccuhbg.org/HELP. Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven is a long-term residential facility for men who were chronically homeless. It also includes a walk-in overnight sleeping space for men, open each winter from December to March and staffed by volunteers. For more information, readers may visit www.ccuhbg.org/SHSH. Since 1978, CCU has served those facing homelessness, poverty, or incarceration in Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry counties. CCU partners with more than 100 Christian congregations in the area to provide social service programs to community members and work with grassroots efforts to support those in need. For more information, readers may visit www.ccuhbg.org.
On Saturday, Dec. 14, at noon, Wreaths Across America will be represented at Mount Tunnel Cemetery, 1058 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, to remember and honor veterans. Remembrance wreaths will be laid on the graves of the fallen heroes, and each veteran’s name will be spoken aloud. The public is invited to attend the brief ceremony at noon and then join in laying wreaths at as many graves as possible. Wreath sponsors are also needed. For more information, readers may visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

Fourteen Harrisburg bands and musicians have contributed to a new Christmas album to benefit the homeless population during the holiday season. The album is titled “Joy to the Burg: The Gift of Music to Help the Homeless.” In connection with the project, the contributing musicians are organizing “Joy to the Burg: A Live Christmas Concert,” to be held on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. at Rose Lehrman Performing Arts Center at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, 1 HACC Drive, Harrisburg. Slightly more than half the artists whose work is included on the album will perform at the concert. The master of ceremonies will be Glenn Hamilton of The River 97.3. Tickets may be purchased at www.JoytotheBurg.com. “Joy to the Burg: The Gift of Music to Help the Homeless” was envisioned by philanthropist and musician Sheldon Jones of the band Loco Lobo. Jones said that he and his wife moved to Harrisburg approximately two years ago and soon noticed the number of homeless people in the downtown area. Jones, who had returned to playing the guitar in his retirement, conceived the idea for the benefit concert and spoke to Tom Sweet, pastor at Market Square Presbyterian Church (MSPC) in downtown Harrisburg, where Jones attends. Sweet suggested Christian Churches United (CCU) as a beneficiary for the concert. The album was released on Nov. 7 at CCU’s United In Love Banquet. Many of the tracks on “Joy to the Burg” are traditional Christmas carols. The contributing artists are Shea Quinn, Anthony Pieruccini Trio, Canaan’s Land, Crossfire3, Steve Rudolph Trio, The Goods, Grant Bryan Band, Leap of Faith, Grumpy, Loco Lobo, No Last Call, Ryan Chilcote, Dred “Perky” Scott and the Steve Rudolph Trio, and the Susquehanna Chorale. The album is available for purchase on compact disc or by digital download at www.JoytotheBurg.com. Separate suggested donations have been set for the CD and for downloads. Sally Hughes, River Rat Pottery; P.J. Rankin Hults, folk painted paper cutting; Karen Hurd, traditional tin work; Jim Murphy, painted furniture; Judy Perilstein, handcrafted vintage antique button jewelry; Lee Pfoutz, primitive wild fowl carvings; and Lynn Taylor, Kingston Pottery and Fine Ceramics. Many of the artists have devoted fans and followers from well beyond the central Pennsylvania area, and the show draws visitors from numerous states. “Last year, people were lined up two and a half hours before we opened,” Shaw recalled. In addition to perusing the original wares, people may purchase freshly roasted peanuts outside the station, where an old Manheim peanut oven will be in operation. The Manheim Historical Society museum and the model railroad display located adjacent to the railroad station will be open to the public on both days, as well as Stiegel Glassworks 1976, located at the rear of the railroad station. Glassblowing demonstrations will take place at Stiegel, and a variety of handcrafted glass will be available to purchase. Call Jim Murphy at 717-584-5576.

Local author Dennis Denenberg will be on hand to sell and autograph copies of his book, “50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet!” Denenberg co-authored the book with Lorraine Roscoe, and it was a 2006 Notable Children’s Trade Book.
