Understanding Today’s Youth Culture BY CATHY MOLITORIS
There is no doubt 2020 has been difficult. Still, good things have come out of this year, said Walt Mueller, president of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, based in Elizabethtown. “Things are tough, but there is a silver lining if we look for it,” Mueller stated. “When difficult
things happen, we see it as a downer, but really this is a moment of opportunity to build relationships, for families to spend time with each other, to rediscover each other and to slow down.” Mueller’s organization provides information and analysis on youth culture from a faith-based perspective, with a mission of “helping parents, youth workers, educators, See Youth Culture pg 3

New Year’s Day Ride Will Benefit Veterans BY CATHY MOLITORIS
n New Year’s Day, the streets of Lancaster County will be filled with motorcyclists, all riding to benefit veterans. The 12th annual charity ride will kick off at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Registration for the event will open at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the event benefit veterans who use services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “Last year, we raised $33,000,” said Tyler Stumpf, ride organizer. “Over the years, we have raised $193,000.” Money is raised through the entry fee for the ride as well as sales of T-shirts and patches. Typically, the event would also include a meal after the ride and a silent auction,
we are really encouraging people to bring items for the vets or to make a financial donation,” she stated. Local businesses are also encouraged to donate to the event. The ride, which is open to the public, is not just for motorcyclists. Drivers of other vehicles are invited, Stumpf said, adding, “It’s for anyone who would like to honor veterans.” It was important to organizers that the ride happened this year, despite changes to the event. “We knew we were going to do the ride, no matter what we had to change,” Stumpf explained. “We never once thought about canceling it. It’s too important to us and to the veterans.” For more information on the event, readers may call Stumpf at 717-468-6197.

ECHOS Opens Winter Shelter BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Shelter is something most of us take for granted. For some, however, finding shelter during the winter can be difficult. Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) is working to change that by opening the ECHOS Emergency Winter Shelter for the season. “We had hoped to house people in a larger shelter on our complex (Community Place on Washington), but construction was delayed due to COVID-19,” said Chrissie Raffensperger, winter shelter

but that has changed this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, organizers are looking for donations of items for veterans or financial contributions. “The event will be held completely outside this year,” Stumpf noted. “We’ll have a trailer in the parking lot to collect things for veterans like toiletries, stamps and pre-paid phone cards.” The 25-mile ride follows a route along the Susquehanna River and concludes at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St. Proceeds from the ride are wholly used for veteran services, with no money going to administrative costs or overhead, said Nicole Tipping, who will be participating in the event. “Since donations will not be as big this year without the auction,

Locust St., Elizabethtown, has a wing of the building that will be dedicated to the winter shelter. “This new location is conducive to families,” Raffensperger noted. “It’s a large area, and there’s room for people to socially distance.” The shelter opened on Dec. 7 and will remain open until the morning of Friday, April 2, 2021. There is no limit on how long someone can stay at the shelter, and it is open to anyone who passes the background check and is
connected to the ECHOS service area in some way. ECHOS serves Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Rheems, Marietta, Maytown and Mount Joy. “We operate on a housingfirst model,” Raffensperger explained, noting that last year the shelter housed 61 people, including 12 children and four seniors. “We believe if you give someone a safe, stable space to stay, they will be more able to navigate out of homelessness into permanent housing.” The winter shelter is currently looking for volunteers, particularly for the overnight and morning shifts. pastors and others understand and reach today’s youth culture,” he said. Times may be hard, but the pandemic has brought families closer together, and there has never been a better time for parents and youths to focus on improving communication. “People are rediscovering family meals, taking walks together, playing outside together,” he stated. “In the midst of bad things, good things have come out.” Now that families are spending more time together, more questions have come up than ever before. “We’re having families ask, ‘What do we talk about?’ or ‘Where is God in all of this?’” Mueller remarked. “To help answer some of these questions, we have put together almost 100 ‘Family TableTalk’ devotional guides, which are free to download.” The organization has also
focused on online parenting seminars and offers four, onehour options on topics including addressing anxiety or helping youths navigate social media. Additionally, the center has upped the frequency of its Youth Culture Matters podcast. “The pandemic has given us an opportunity to teach people how to handle difficulty,” said Mueller, who has been running his organization for more than 30 years. “We truly believe that when you encounter difficulty, it makes you stronger. We have found that kids are very resilient. When parents choose to speak to kids about how to handle difficulty rather than shielding them from it, they are working to prepare them for life.” To learn more about the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, readers may visit https://cpyu.org/.

Fundraiser Benefits North Star RICK FAUST Rick Faust ,43, of Mount Joy passed unexpectedly on November 10th,2020. Rick was a real character who loved to make people laugh. Even during Covid he made people smile by wearing an underwear mask in public. Rick was all about a good time and as he put it “Had champagne tastes on a beer budget”. His infectious humor and smile will be missed. Rick had many interests. One thing about Rick, he was never half way into a hobby. Early on in life he lifted weights and enjoyed listening to 2Pac especially Makaveli. He regularly went to the beach and loved fishing. He surely helped keep the tackle shop in business. Later on, he enjoyed history and was proud to be a World War II Re-enactor. He also enjoyed fixing cars. He was a skilled Painter but previously enjoyed driving sports cars for the Manheim Auto Auction. The closest he got to his own sports car was an old Scirocco that he loved hitting the pedal to the metal. He was just an amazing person all around to friends and family. He is survived by his parents Pat Faust & Jackie Burham plus 4 children he adored: Patrick, Hayden, Gavin & Tyler. In addition, Grandma Lee Gaborek and multiple Aunts, Uncles, Cousins plus extended family. Rick lives forever in our memories till we meet again.

On October 8th, Martin surpassed a milestone never before reached in MCCS varsity girls’ soccer history, netting her 100th career goal in an away contest at West Shore Christian. She racked up a total of 114 before the season came to a close. “I am so excited to have achieved this milestone that I have worked so hard for, and it would not have been possible without the support of my amazing teammates and coaches over the past four years,” celebrated Martin. The club celebrated five all conference selections, with Martin and Abigail Yordy named to the first team, and Webb, Ruth Hynum and Lauren Enterline receiving secondteam recognition. They will also say goodbye to seniors Martin, Olivia Yordy, and Lea Lin, a trio whose leadership and skill will not be easily replaced. Amongst the ups, downs, and hurdles of the 2020 season, the club never lost sight of their team theme, “Playing for God” derived from I Corinthians 10:31. Though the outlook on the season was uncertain at best, Coach Schmitkons challenged her team to embrace each obstacle that presented itself. “In Districts the team played their best games of the season. They showed they were still capable of growing and improving, and we’re looking forward to seeing that happen in the future.” BOYS’ SOCCER MC boys soccer powered through an undefeated regular season (120-1) to advance to the CCAC finals before falling, 1-0, to Harrisburg Christian on October 31st. Four days prior, Damian Rutt’s
goal in the first round of playoffs lifted the squad to a 1-0 victory over Conestoga Christian on October 27th, earning their appearance in the CCAC title game. The Chargers’ season efforts also earned them a PIAA District III playoff berth in which they bowed out in a semi-final loss to Tulpehocken, 20, closing their season on November
7th. Rutt’s scoring contributions were a crucial aspect of the team’s season-long success, accruing 15 goals and 13 assists. Sophomore, Brett Taylor, created another offensive angle for the Chargers, garnering 10 goals and seven assists. MC’s regular season contained

and to say that 2020 has presented obstacles is an understatement. Yet, despite those challenges young athletes also continue to prove they are able and willing to rise to the occasion. “I am so proud of our athletic staff, coaches, and most importantly our players for their perseverance during a very unique fall season,” commented Mount Calvary Athletic Director, Jared Griest. “Not only were we able to complete a full season without any cancellations, but all of our teams combined to compete at a level that we have never experienced before.”

sport as well as the fun and comradery he brought to the team. Hayden Merrick, a four-year player who also is a member of choir, National Honor Society and Yearbook, will be remembered for his sense of humor and growth in leadership pointing others to follow the Lord. Hunter Stewart, a three-sport athlete and class VP, has contributed some of the best numbers for the golf team as well as showing a fun-loving, team-first mentality. the returning crew. GOLF Charger golf reminded us that wins and losses are not the only indicator of growth when it comes to athletics, as the team persevered through competitions, pushing themselves to grow in both skill and character. “The season did not see much success in the win column,” said head coach Matt Owlett. “But we certainly improved as a team. Most importantly, we honored God with our attitudes and efforts and had an incredibly fun time together.” Though unable to clinch a team win, in their final match at Millersburg the MC club shaved off 30 strokes from their previous collective best, and Hunter Stewart and Hayden Merrick finished their high school golf career with personal best rounds. Three graduating three seniors were celebrated on October 2nd for senior night, with each adding a unique dynamic that will be missed. Jordan Weaver played two years on the golf team in addition to lending his talents to the Yearbook committee. Coach Owlett pointed out Weaver’s improvement in the

formidable back line and strong keeper, sophomore Reagan Mummau, who gathered 38 saves. Wyatt Lamb, a junior, anchored the defensive line that bolstered the squad, and two sophomore’s Brandon Zeager and Braden Esbenshade, placed in defensive midfield positions, gave the club invaluable contributions on both ends of the field. Twice during the regular season, once against High Point Baptist and then against West Shore, the club found themselves in a 3-0 deficit headed into the final minutes of regulation, and both times the Chargers regrouped to battle back to an outstanding 4-3 triumph. “Our VB soccer regular season has been one of MCCS best and we have battled against some tough opponents,” explained coach Marc Myers. “The boys have demonstrated their spirit, hard work, and teamwork as we need every single player to be successful.” Taylor and Rutt were both named to the CCAC first team allconference team, and Zeager and Lamb received second team honors. Next season, the team will miss the presence of their lead scorer, Rutt, and fellow senior Dane Kelley who was described by Coach Myers as an example of hard work and dedication. While their leadership will be missed, their examples
