In honor of the 100-year tradition at King’s College, the opening carol will be “Once in David’s Royal City.” Worship will conclude with the lighting of candles and the congregational singing of two final carols.

New Year’s Eve Celebration Adds Fireworks By Chelsea Peifer
For the fifth consecutive year, volunteers from Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Winters Heritage House Museum have put together a fun-filled, family-oriented New Year’s Eve celebration for the community. The event, Welcome 2019, is set to take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31. Several new elements have been added for this year’s celebration, but the one that organizers are perhaps the most thrilled about is a professional fireworks display. The fireworks will begin immediately after the raising of a lighted star at 7 p.m. outside of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown. By raising the star at 7 p.m., the church is continuing a tradition that Elizabethtown Borough held for many
years in conjunction with its sister town of Letterkenny, Ireland. Organizer Phil Clark explained that at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Elizabethtown, the clock strikes midnight for residents welcoming the new year in Letterkenny. Plus, hosting a celebration well before midnight gives local families and anyone who would rather not stay up late an alternative option for ringing in the new year. From 3 to 6 p.m., chicken barbecue dinners will be available to purchase at the church. Meals will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, fruit, and a bottle of water. Advance tickets for the chicken dinners may be purchased at the church or by calling 717-367-2786. Homemade soup will also be for sale at the church that evening. Aside from the chicken barbecue and soup, the entire event is free. Children’s See Welcome 2019 pg 3
Cross Roads Church Plans Community Christmas Meal The members of Cross Roads Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, invite area residents to join them for the 21st annual Community Christmas Day Meal. People are welcome to stop in at the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to enjoy a hot turkey dinner. All are welcome, and there is no cost to attend. Takeout options are also available. Attendees who would like to pay it forward are welcome to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Mount Joy Food Bank. Reservations are requested, but not See Christmas Meal pg 8

LDHL Launches Secret Santa Program
By Chelsea Peifer
Founded in 1961 as Citizen Scholarship Fund and changing its name to Dollars for Scholars of Lancaster County for a time, Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) has always had one mission: that of helping county residents to attend college full time by providing interest-free loans. “We offer a hand up, not a handout,” said executive director Christie Livengood. She noted that LDHL has a 96 percent repayment rate. “Students pay (their loans) back because we’re a local nonprofit and they know it matters. By paying it back, in turn, they help someone else.” See Secret Santa pg 3
Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning executive director Christie Livengood (left) and administrator Amy Heth invite the public to contribute to the new Secret Santa event.

aims to pay off a portion of students’ debts anonymously. “The general idea was suggested by board members, Livengood explained. “It’s based off the idea of people paying off layaways (at superstores), school lunch accounts, and electric bills. We thought it was a cool concept and a unique way to donate during the holiday season. Donations to LDHL are tax-deductible. Organizations and individuals may donate to Secret Santa through Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019. All of the funds will be divided among the borrowers, with up to $500 of debt forgiven per person. That maximum amount was identified as the most LDHL may forgive without borrowers having to pay taxes on the forgiven debt. “We will use the money to pay off as many (debts) as possible, Livengood said. The application process for the 2019-20 school year will open on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019. Folks may learn more about Secret Santa or donate by visiting www.lancdollars.org. Those with questions may contact Livengood at 717-682-9194 or clivengood@lancdollars.org.
Welcome 2019 from pg 1 activities will be offered at the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Free activities at the church will include
bingo, balloon twisting, face painting, music provided by a disc jockey, and games led by a local Scout troop. Bingo prizes have been donated by parishioners and local businesses. Free hot dogs, popcorn, and hot cocoa will be available. Emergency vehicles including a fire truck, a police car, and an ambulance will also be on-site for folks to tour. See Welcome 2019 pg 8

LDHL gives loans once a year, and Lancaster County students attending an accredited program anywhere in the world full time may borrow money up to four years. Loans are not automatically renewed; borrowers must reapply every year. The amount awarded depends on how much money LDHL has received from community donors and student repayments; it has no endowment and receives no government funding. In August 2018, LDHL loaned $1,025,100 to 604 students. “The more money we receive, the more money we can give out, Livengood remarked. Thanks to community support, the maximum amount a student may borrow each year has increased to $1,700. The maximum student debt is currently $6,500, reported LDHL administrator Amy Heth. Borrowers have a six-month grace period after graduation before they must start repaying their loan at the rate of $100 a month. LDHL officials hope that this holiday season folks will be inspired to participate in the organization’s first-ever Secret Santa event, which

Pictured on front: Dan Chultz, 521 Club board member, invites area residents to the annual Christmas Eve ALCATHON that will run from noon on Dec. 24 to noon on Dec. 25. The club, which is a location for recovery-based activities, is located at 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster.

It May Be Yours But We’ll Fix It Like It’s Ours!
A woman waiting for a noontime Easy Does It meeting to start at the 521 Club wants others present to know the significance of the Lancaster County location for recovery-based activities. “This place saves lives,” she said. The 521 Club, which is named for its first home at 521 E. King St., Lancaster, has been a fixture in the county for several decades. Over the years, the club has been in several locations, including Park City, on Harrisburg Pike, and on Dillerville Avenue. Since 1999, it has been located at 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster, offering a place for several daily meetings based on the Alcoholics Anonymous curriculum. On Monday, Dec. 24, the club will hold its annual Christmas Eve ALCATHON. The event will begin at noon on Dec. 24 and run through noon on Tuesday, Dec. 25, to provide amped-up support to those battling substance abuse issues. The club is overseen by a nine-member board, of which Dan Chultz is a member. “Christmas is a very sensitive time for anybody in recovery,” said Chultz. “We start at noon on Christmas Eve with a kickoff, and we have a meeting starting each hour for 24 hours.” According to Chultz, each meeting is chaired by a different club member. “(The format) provides people with a chance to share their experiences or issues with family and friends,” said Chultz. “The whole holiday season, beginning with Thanksgiving, is difficult for someone in recovery because it triggers so many emotions and that can be difficult to handle,” Chultz explained. “The easy way out would be substance abuse, and we don’t want that to happen so here we are.” Those who attend will find that food and a welcoming atmosphere will be plentiful no matter the time. “Food is replenished every hour,” said Chultz, who noted that the 521 Club is packed with about 100 people when the event begins. “(Attendance) tapers off and on (throughout the 24 hours),” noted
Chultz. “People leave but for those who have nowhere to go, we’re here.” Chultz added that because of varying work schedules, it is important for the club to be open all times of the day or night during the ALCATHON. “It’s a place for people who may have lost families or relocated here and don’t have family here,” said Chultz. “People come here and socialize with friends.” Chultz noted that those being served by local organizations such as The Gatehouse and Transition to Community/Potter’s House are invited to take part in the ALCATHON. The 521 Club was established as a meeting place for those in recovery. Social activities offered at the club include dances, bingo, and bonfires. Club members have also reached out to residents in the Butter Road area. “We pride ourselves in trying to be neighbor-friendly,” said Chultz. “In the summer, we have a picnic and we invite the neighbors to socialize and see what we’re all about.” He noted that, which the exception of the ALCATHON, most club activities end by 9 or 10 p.m. According to Chultz, the 521 Club, which offers membership to anyone who has accumulated 30 days of continuous sobriety, serves as an important stepping stone for those facing the challenges of staying in recovery. “We provide a way for people in recovery to realize they can lead a normal life, have fun, be involved with people, and do things that don’t involve substance abuse,” he said. Readers who would like more information about the 521 Club may visit www.The521club.com or call 717-299-9397.

Organizer Vicki Yaider noted that the youth group made luminarias that will be lined up outside to provide extra lighting and ambiance. Weather permitting, a fire pit will be blazing and supplies for s’mores will be on hand. Also new for this year will be commemorative bottles of root beer available for purchase. The 22-ounce bottles will be brewed and bottled by an Elizabethtown-based brewery and will feature a commemorative “Welcome 2019” label. According to Clark, Christ Lutheran members have sold root beer floats at a stand at the Elizabethtown Fair as a fundraiser for more than a dozen years, and in recent years proceeds from that effort have helped to fund the New Year’s Eve event. Proceeds from the bottled root beer sales will help to keep future celebrations free for attendees. Clark also hopes to have additional commemorative bottles made to sell at the next Elizabethtown Fair. With four years of successful events in the books and details all lined up for this year, now organizers are simply hoping and praying for good weather. “It was bitter cold last year, but we didn’t cancel,” recalled Clark, estimating that approximately 300 people showed up. “It was surprisingly well-attended for how cold it was.” For more information, readers may call 717-367-2786 or visit www.christ lutheran-etown.com.

make or donate food. Originally, organizers thought the meal would primarily reach people who may be struggling financially and unable to afford food, but McFarland said that more than anything the meal has served as a way for people who would otherwise be alone to enjoy fellowship and the company of one another. “People usually get here at the beginning and stay the whole time,” said McFarland. Last year, approximately 420 people enjoyed a meal from Cross Roads. “A lot of times their families live far away, and they have no place to go,” added Clare Funck, who has helped to plan and serve the annual meal for many years. “We sit at their tables and catch up, and sometimes we pray with them or ask if they have any prayer requests.” Cross Roads members also deliver meals to folks working at places like the police station, the fire department, and local convenience stores on Christmas Day - all with the goal of making sure no one feels lonely or forgotten. “If you’re alone for Christmas, come here and be welcomed into the family here,” encouraged Funck. “It’s such a joy to see people being fed and enjoying themselves. It feels like you’re at home.”

Walk-ins are welcome. “We don’t ever want to turn people away, because we always end up having plenty of food,” said coordinator Joe McFarland. Meals can also be delivered upon request to area residents who are unable to leave their homes. McFarland had the idea for the annual Community Christmas Day Meal at Cross Roads at a time when free Thanksgiving meals were plentiful in the area, but Christmas Day meals were not. “I honestly felt like it was what God wanted us to do,” shared McFarland. The inaugural event was held on Christmas Eve, in case there were not enough volunteers available to serve on Christmas Day, but as it turned out there were plenty of helpers. Every year after that, the meal has been held on Christmas Day, and McFarland said helping to serve the meal has become such a popular tradition that sometimes they actually have to turn away volunteers. Church members who are not helping with setup and teardown and serving the meal are eager to

Festivities will take place through Sunday, Dec. 23, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The EACTC tree, made possible by a donation from Al Spicer of POS SOS, features more than 150 handmade ornaments, representing the nearly one dozen programs implemented by the organization in the Elizabethtown Area School District. Featured programs include Club Ophelia, Do the Right Thing, Red Ribbon Week, and more. Students who are a part of the Elizabethtown Area High School’s PAWS … and Think Club, an initiative of EACTC, made the ornaments and decorated the tree. Through Dec. 23, the public is invited to vote for Best of Show at Christmas Tree Lane. Visitors can purchase voting tickets, and 100
percent of the proceeds will go back to that tree’s charity. For example, if the EACTC tree has 500 votes, EACTC will receive $500. The top vote-receiving organizations also have the potential to win donation prizes. For more information about the event, including hours and admission prices, readers may visit www.lancasterbarnstormers.com. Additionally, the community is encouraged to watch for EACTC’s next Positive Community Norm (PCN) sign this month. The third sign in the series states, “Three out of four teens say their parents are the leading influence on their decisions. Talk early and often.” The campaign focuses on the positive behaviors within the community in order to grow those behaviors and improve the overall health and safety of the community. The campaign also aims to decrease the perception that youths may have that all of their peers are engaging in a risky behavior by focusing on the majority who are making healthy choices.
Songs For Cindy Fundraiser Planned The annual Songs for Cindy fundraiser to benefit the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation will take place on Sunday, Dec. 16, from noon to 6 p.m. at Shank’s Tavern, 36 S.
