Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) opened its Emergency Winter Shelter at St. Paul’s UMC in Elizabethtown. Chrissie Raffensperger, winter shelter coordinator, invites community members to volunteer at the shelter. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Shelter is something most of us take for granted. For some, however, finding shelter during the winter can be difficult. Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) is working to change that by opening the ECHOS Emergency Winter Shelter for the season. “We had hoped to house people in a larger shelter on our complex (Community Place on Washington), but construction was delayed due to COVID-19,” said Chrissie Raffensperger, winter shelter coordinator. “ We are very grateful to instead be able to use space at St. Paul’s UMC this year.” The church, located at 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown, has a wing of the building that will be dedicated to the winter shelter. “This new location is conducive to families,”

Raffensperger noted. “It’s a large area, and there’s room for people to socially distance.” The shelter opened on Dec. 7 and will remain open until the morning of Friday, April 2, 2021. There is no limit on how long someone can stay at the shelter, and it is open to anyone who passes the background check and is connected to the ECHOS service area in some way. ECHOS serves Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Rheems, Marietta, Maytown and Mount Joy.

“We operate on a housingfirst model,” Raffensperger explained, noting that last year the shelter housed 61 people, including 12 children and four seniors. “We believe if you give someone a safe, stable space to stay, they will be more able to navigate out of homelessness into permanent housing.” The winter shelter is currently looking for volunteers, particularly for the overnight and morning shifts. Responsibilities of volunteers include greeting guests, monitoring guests overnight, preparing to-go lunches and cleaning the shelter for the next evening’s use. Providing winter shelter serves several purposes, Raffensperger noted, including protection from the elements. “It’s also dangerous to be on the streets,” she explained. “We want to provide a safe space for people, and we want to help people who are looking for help.” For more information about volunteering with the ECHOS Emergency Winter Shelter, readers may call the ECHOS office at 717-361-0740, ext. 200, or email volunteer@ echoslancaster.org.

New Year’s Day Ride Will Benefit Veterans BY CATHY MOLITORIS

On New Year’s Day, the streets of Lancaster County will be filled with motorcyclists, all riding to benefit veterans. The 12th annual charity ride will kick off at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Registration for the event will open at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the event benefit veterans who use services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “Last year, we raised $33,000,” said Tyler Stumpf, ride organizer. “Over the years, we have raised $193,000.” Money is raised through the entry fee for the ride as well as sales of T-shirts and patches. Typically, the event would also include a meal after the ride and a silent auction, but that has changed this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, organizers are looking for donations of items for veterans or financial contributions. “The event will be held completely outside this year,” Stumpf noted. “We’ll have a trailer in the parking lot to collect things for veterans like toiletries, stamps and pre-paid phone cards.” The 25-mile ride follows a route along the Susquehanna River and concludes at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St. Proceeds from the ride are wholly used for veteran services, with no money going to administrative costs or overhead, said Nicole Tipping, who will be participating in the event. “Since donations will not be as big this year without the auction, we are really encouraging people to bring items for the vets or to make a financial

donation,” she stated. Local businesses are also encouraged to donate to the event. The ride, which is open to the public, is not just for motorcyclists. Drivers of other vehicles are invited, Stumpf said, adding, “It’s for anyone who would like to honor veterans.” It was important to organizers that the ride happened

this year, despite changes to the event. “We knew we were going to do the ride, no matter what we had to change,” Stumpf explained. “We never once thought about canceling it. It’s too important to us and to the veterans.” For more information on the event, readers may call Stumpf at 717-468-6197.

Chiques Church To Celebrate Christmas Eve Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, will hold a Christmas Eve service on Thursday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. The prelude will begin at 6:45 p.m. The service will include Nativity figures, such as shepherds, the magi, and

the holy family; congregational singing; music selections by a children’s choir, a men’s trio, and soloists; and candle lighting. For more information, readers may call Mike J. Hess 717-305-8767.

Understanding Today’s Youth Culture There is no doubt 2020 has been difficult. Still, good things have come out of this year, said Walt Mueller, president of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, based in Elizabethtown. “Things are tough, but there is a silver lining if we look for it,” Mueller stated. “When difficult things happen, we see it as a downer, but really this is a moment of opportunity to build relationships, for families to spend time with each other, to rediscover each other and to slow down.” Mueller’s organization provides information and analysis on youth culture from a faithbased perspective, with a mission of “helping parents, youth workers, educators, pastors and others understand and reach today’s youth culture,” he said. Times may be hard, but the pandemic has brought families closer together, and there has never been a better time for parents and youths to focus on improving communication. “People are rediscovering family meals, taking walks together, playing outside together,” he stated. “In the midst of bad

things, good things have come out.” Now that families are spending more time together, more questions have come up than ever before. “We’re having families ask, ‘What do we talk about?’ or ‘Where is God in all of this?’” Mueller remarked. “To help answer some of these questions, we have put together almost 100 ‘Family TableTalk’ devotional guides, which are free to download.” The organization has also focused on online parenting seminars and offers four, onehour options on topics including addressing anxiety or helping youths navigate social media. Additionally, the cen-

ter has upped the frequency of its Youth Culture Matters podcast. “The pandemic has given us an opportunity to teach people how to handle difficulty,” said Mueller, who has been running his organization for more than 30 years. “We truly believe that when you encounter difficulty, it makes you stronger. We have found that kids are very resilient. When parents choose to speak to kids about how to handle difficulty rather than shielding them from it, they are working to prepare them for life.” To learn more about the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, readers may visit https://cpyu.org/.

The Amish Experience, a guided bus tour company in Lancaster County founded in 1959, has announced that in order to serve those visitors who are concerned about getting on a bus with strangers, it has developed a completely contactless option for the traditional 90-minute guided Amish farmland tour. A small FM radio transmitter was installed in the Amish Experience bus, so that everything the guide says into his or her hands-free microphone in the bus is broadcast over a vacant frequency on the FM dial, thus allowing customer to drive in the safety and comfort of their own vehicles, following the bus down the scenic back roads, with the live, in-the-moment narration of the guide coming through their car’s speakers. The only thing a customer must have in their vehicle to enjoy the contactless option is an FM radio. There is a fee per car.

The seminary has launched a national search to find its next president. The board of trustees is looking for an experienced, mission-oriented leader in higher education who is visionary in outlook, collaborative in approach and an advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion. AGB Search, a firm based in Washington, D.C., and specializing in executive searches for higher education, is consulting in the search. A 10-member Presidential Search Committee, representing trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni and community leaders, will review applications and identify finalists for the board of trustees to consider. The Rev. Dr. Monica Dawkins-Smith, a trustee and Lancaster Theological Seminary alumna, is chair of the search committee. The committee is accepting applications through

By the time Morrison and a group of friends presented Saad with his gift, they had raised more than $1,700. Saad said he was surprised by the gesture, and he’s grateful for the relationships he’s formed with Weis customers. “I like this job,” he said. “I like the people I meet. If I see somebody needs something, I try to help.” Saad has been known to even help customers fix flat tires or to entertain fussy babies while parents load up their groceries. Saad, who immigrated to the United States from Egypt in 1996, said he may use some of the money to visit his mother, who still lives in Egypt. His father passed away this year and he was unable to travel back to his hometown due to the pandemic. “Samir is just the nicest person,” Morrison said. “He’s a kind man who deserved to be recognized for his kindness.”

The Susquehanna Chorale will release a virtual concert of its Candlelight Christmas series. The concert is free to the public and will be available via a link on www.susquehanna chorale.org on or after Saturday, Dec. 19. The chorale is a nationally acclaimed adult chamber ensemble of 38 auditioned singers, founded in 1981 by conductor and artistic director Linda L. Tedford. “The Susquehanna Chorale’s Candlelight Christmas concerts are eagerly anticipated by audience members,” Tedford said. “For the safety of all, we made the difficult decision to cancel our live performances this year. But we will

share the beautiful Christmas messages of hope, peace, and joy through the virtual concert.” The concert will feature two new pieces performed virtually by the choir members: Dan Forrest’s arrangement of “The First Noel” and “ We Wish You a Merry Christmas” by arranger John Rutter. The virtual concert also will include selections from the chorale’s past Candlelight Christmas concerts, performed at Messiah University’s High Center for the Performing Arts, and a piece from the group’s “Susquehanna Christmas II” recording. The concert will include one sing-along carol for

viewers, a favorite part of the Candlelight Christmas concert experience, and a special message from Tedford. The concert will conclude with the chorale’s traditional finale, Malcolm Sargent’s setting of “Silent Night.” Among the sponsors, foundations, and donors making the virtual concert possible are Cross Keys Village in New Oxford, Anne M. and Philip H. Glatfelter III Family Foundation, Howard E. Heckler, Josiah W. and Bessie H. Kline

Foundation, McCormick Family Foundation, The Presser Foundation, Renew Cumberland County Relief Block Grant Program, United Service Foundation Inc., and University Music Service. The Susquehanna Chorale is a recipient of Chorus America’s Margaret Hillis Achievement Award for Choral Excellence. In 2011, Tedford was honored by the American Choral Directors Association of Pennsylvania with the Elaine Brown

For fellowship, food and fun, head to Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, Dec. 19. The church will hold a drivethrough live Nativity and free Christmas meal for pickup between 2 and 4 p.m. “The meal is an annual tradition, said pastor Blaine Wenger. “We had to change some things this year, but we didn’t want to give this up. It was important for us to do this for our community. While the meal is traditionally a sit-down dinner, shifting to takeout-only was necessary this year, he noted, adding, “We’re still offering a great meal of ham and baked

potatoes, green beans and dessert. With the church needing to change the format of its meal, the congregation took the opportunity to add something new. “This year, we’ll be having a drive-through Nativity with five different stations, Wenger stated. “Visitors will be able to hear and see the Christmas story with live music and with live animals. The Christmas meal is always a popular event with the public, he said. “Last year, about 350 people came for the meal, he remarked. “We want the community to know we are here for them. We want to share the message of Jesus with them and focus on everything
