SPECIAL SERVICE

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church,

1290 River Road, Marietta, will hold a Blue Christmas service on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 3 p.m. The service will include prayers and songs from the Taize religious community in France. While the service is geared for all who grieve and are ill, lonely, depressed, or experiencing economic difficulties, all are invited to attend and participate in the service as able. More information is available at www.zionmarietta.org or by calling the church office at 717-426-1884.

On Tuesday, Dec. 31, the community is invited to ring in the new year a few hours early at Welcome 2020, a familyfriendly New Year’s Eve celebration organized by volunteers from Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown, and the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The event is set to take place from 3 to 7 p.m. The event will culminate with the annual raising of a lighted star outside

of the church at 7 p.m., immediately followed by a professional fireworks display. According to volunteer Phil Clark, the timing is significant because at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Elizabethtown, the clock strikes midnight for residents welcoming the new year in Letterkenny, Ireland, which is the sister town of Elizabethtown. Hosting a party earlier in the evening also provides an alternative option for families and anyone who would rather not stay up late for ringing in the new year. “We have an LED light sign with the year under the star, and every year when the star See Welcome 2020 pg 4

The congregation of Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, would like to invite the community to a free Christmas meal on Saturday, Dec. 21. Dinner will be served promptly at 6 p.m., with a brief program to follow. Everyone is welcome to attend the free event. Dinner will be served family-style at tables set up in the church gymnasium. The menu will include ham, green beans, baked potatoes, applesauce, rolls, and assorted desserts. The meal will be prepared and served by members of Ruhl’s UMC. Those planning to attend are encouraged to sign up by calling the church office at 717-665-3400. Organizer Seth Achey noted that while reservations are not required, they help to give organizers an idea of how much food to prepare. Live Christmas music will be performed before and during the meal by the Last Stand Band, and a Gospel message will be presented at the close of the meal. Achey said that the purpose of the now-annual event, which is entering its fifth year, has always been to share the good news and love of Jesus Christ. Last year, approximately 260 people attended the meal. “We’ve started using the Saturday before Christmas because it tends to be a convenient day for many people,” commented Achey. “A number of folks have made the meal a part of their Christmas tradition as well, coming year after year, and we’re glad to see old friends as well as meet first-timers.” Ruhl’s UMC offers a traditional Sunday worship service each week at 8 a.m., with a contemporary praise service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school classes for people of all ages take place from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. All are welcome. For more information about the church or the Christmas meal and program, readers may visit www.ruhlschurch.org.

Bainbridge Elementary School recently held its annual Thanksgiving food drive to help combat hunger in the community during the holiday season. As a result of the weeklong effort to collect nonperishable food items, 25 families in need in the Bainbridge community were slated to receive a food basket stocked with many of the items needed for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Additionally, students brought in household items such as paper towels, napkins, plasticware, toothbrushes, and toothpaste to go along with the food baskets. The school’s PTO added gift certificates for a turkey. The annual food drive has become a tradition at the school and was once again supported by the school’s students, faculty, and staff. As part of Elizabethtown Area School District’s Life Ready Model, student participation in altruistic projects is intended to extend learning beyond the four

see my counterpart develop an enthusiasm for cultivating orange flesh sweet potatoes at a training my first year and then moving on to lead a training for other Peace Corps volunteers and counterparts the following year,” relayed Wilson. In addition to her work with the women’s group, Wilson interviewed farmers about bush burning practices in Northern Ghana in preparation for her master’s thesis. After she returns from service, Wilson plans to complete her Master of Science at West Virginia University and work in natural resource management. As a Peace Corps volunteer, Wilson received a living stipend, medical and dental coverage, and travel to and from her country of service. After completing service, she is eligible for further benefits, including graduate school tuition assistance at more than 90 universities through the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program, partial cancellation of Perkins loans and eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and noncompetitive hiring status for federal jobs. The Peace Corps sends Americans with a passion for service abroad on behalf of the United States to work with communities and create lasting change. Volunteers develop sustainable solutions to address challenges in education, health, community economic development, agriculture, the environment, and youth development. Currently, 291 Pennsylvania residents are serving in the Peace Corps, and more than 8,670 Pennsylvania residents have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 235,000 Americans of all ages have served in 141 countries worldwide. The Peace Corps is currently seeking additional applicants to fill hundreds of requests for volunteers in programs worldwide in 2020 and beyond. Open positions with a Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020, application deadline are available in the fields of education, health, agriculture, community economic development, youths in development, and the environment. Welcome 2020 from pg 1 goes up we get a line of people taking pictures with it,” remarked Clark. “That is a neat tradition we didn’t even plan on.” From 3 to 7 p.m., chicken barbecue dinners prepared by Kauffman’s BBQ Chicken will be available to purchase at the church. Meals will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, fruit, and a bottle of water. Advance tickets for the chicken dinners may be purchased at the church or by calling 717-367-2786. Homemade soup will also be for sale at the church, as well as commemorative bottles of root beer made by Moo-Duck Brewery in Elizabethtown and bottled by church volunteers. Proceeds from the sales of chicken barbecue dinners, soup, and bottled root beer will help to cover the costs of hosting the event. For many years, Christ Lutheran members have sold root beer floats at a stand at the Elizabethtown Fair as a fundraiser, and in recent years proceeds from that effort have helped to fund the New Year’s Eve event. Aside from those food and beverage

options, everything at the event is offered free of charge. At Winters Heritage House Museum, people can observe hand-spinning and hearth cooking demonstrations. Children’s activities and crafts will also be offered. Free activities at the church will include bingo with prizes, games, balloon twisting, face painting, marshmallow roasting, and music provided by a disc jockey. Free hot dogs, popcorn, and hot cocoa will be available. Emergency vehicles including a fire truck, a police car, and an ambulance will also be onsite for people to see. “It’s a very family-friendly and community-oriented event,” said Clark, noting that planning for the annual celebration begins in July. “We have a really great committee.” The planning committee for Welcome 2020 includes Clark, Pam and Keith Wolgemuth, Vicki Yaider, Pam and Craig Madonna, and Diane Boyd. For more information on Welcome 2020, readers may call 717-367-2786 or visit www.christlutheran-etown.com.

Mount Joy Mayor Tim Bradley has proclaimed the week of Dec. 15 to 21 as Harold Billow Appreciation Week in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of the Malmedy Massacre, which took place on Dec. 17 during World War II. Billow, a longtime Mount Joy resident, is known to be the last living survivor of the Malmedy Massacre. On Dec. 17, 1944, during the second day of the Battle of the Bulge, German Waffen SS soldiers captured and disarmed United States service personnel of the 285th Field Artillery Observation Batallion in the area of Malmedy, Belgium. Bradley’s proclamation details how following their capture, the U.S. soldiers were led into a nearby field and were executed with machine gun fire. Afterward, German combat soldiers walked through the field executing anyone who still displayed signs of life. Some soldiers lay motionless, feigning death, and thus were able to survive and later escape. At least 84 American soldiers were killed. The event has been noted as the worst single massacre of American troops in World War II. “I … do hereby recognize the faithful devotion, dedicated service, and personal See Billow pg 9

The inaugural event was held on Christmas Eve, in case there were not enough volunteers available to serve on Christmas Day, but as it turned out there were plenty of helpers. sacrifice Harold Billow has rendered to his country, community, and comrades, by proclaiming the week of Dec. 15-21, 2019, as Harold Billow Appreciation Week,” states Bradley’s proclamation. To mark the sacrifice of his comrades, Billow displays 87 flags in his yard to honor each of the fallen men during every major patriotic holiday each year. In addition to Harold Billow Appreciation Week, Bradley declared Dec. 17 as Malmedy Massacre Remembrance Day in honor of the men who lost their lives or became disabled in their service to their nation 75 years ago. Dec. 17 is also significant to Billow as it was on that date in 1945 that he married his wife, Vera. The two met in England while Billow was serving in the U.S. Army and returned to the U.S. in 1946. They were married for 63 years before Vera died in 2008. Billow has received Congressional recognition and has been honored by the Pennsylvania National Guard Military Museum and Fort Indiantown Gap. He has shared his experience as a guest speaker at Donegal High School, veterans’ events, and area churches.

Afghanistan. Glen, who was a nurse, had first traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. He later completed a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse. He worked at Lancaster Regional Hospital and for the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from

Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for LMHS and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. From the tournament and other donations, the endowment has received almost $50,000. Funds are used to provide scholarships to immigrant and refugee children at the school. Play during the tournament is “Glenstyle,” which means there are no officials. Glen-style play will be explained to the teams prior to each tournament. Registration for the tournament is now open, and those interested in taking part are encouraged to sign up soon as the spaces for teams fill up quickly. Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health opened a seventh urgent care location - at 418 Cloverleaf Road, Elizabethtown - on Nov. 26, following a renovation to the Norlanco outpatient facility. The urgent care is open 14 hours a day and offers services and treatments that are often not available in a typical urgent care facility, including the ability to administer IV fluid for dehydration, two treatment rooms that have the capability to monitor patients for several hours, increased capabilities for asthma treatment, increased diagnostics for pain (stomach, leg, shortness of breath), and concussion screening. The urgent care is staffed by physicians and advance practice providers on the medical staff at LG Health. Open seven days a week with no appointment necessary, urgent care is ideal when medical attention is needed for sprains, cuts, burns, infections, or flu symptoms and when patients cannot get in to see their family doctor, such as after hours or on holidays. The outpatient facility also features new behavioral health and cardiac services. Existing physical therapy services currently provided at the outpatient center have also been expanded following the renovation. LG Health has additional urgent care locations on Rohrerstown Road in Lancaster and in Ephrata, Parkesburg, Lebanon, Lititz, and downtown Lancaster. Hours for the LG Health Urgent Care at Norlanco are Mondays through Sundays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, readers may visit www.lghealthurgent care.org to reserve a spot in line or call 717-627-7687.
