Kroeck To Benefit From Fundraiser A fundraiser, “Coffee for Karen,” is taking place at Country Table Restaurant, 740 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Through Christmas Eve, Monday, Dec. 24, donations are being accepted at the eatery to benefit Karen Kroeck. Kroeck has been employed at Country Table for 19 years. Just over four years ago, she was diagnosed with the early stages of vocal cord cancer. Following this diagnosis, the plan was for her to undergo radiation five days a week for six weeks. She went for her radiation appointment every afternoon after her

shift at work. She continued to work six days a week at two locations, sometimes working 12 to 14 hours a day. At the beginning of 2015, a PET scan showed that her cancer was gone. In the summer of 2016, Kroeck noticed that her voice was becoming weary. After a check-up and another PET scan, she learned that the cancer had returned. W hen subsequent laser surgery was unsuccessful, she had a laryngectomy (removal of the voice box). By December 2016, she was back at work. In September this year, the cancer returned, and the plan

was to remove the tumor and follow up with radiation and chemotherapy. However, in the time since her previous surgery, Kroek’s husband had become ill and retired from work. This resulted in a change in Kroeck’s insurance policy; complications due to this change delayed the surgery, and the surgery window passed. Kroeck is now planning to pursue radiation and chemotherapy for her treatment. In addition to taking part in Coffee for Karen, readers may contribute to the cause at w w w. g o f u n d m e . c o m / a 4 u 6 4 -karenstrong.

Karen Kroeck, who has worked at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy for 19 years and is currently battling cancer, will benefit from “Coffee for Karen,” a fundraiser that will take place at the restaurant through Christmas Eve.

Trees Planted Within City The Lancaster City Alliance and community members of all ages planted 35 trees recently in areas of Lancaster city with little to no greenery. The trees will create a new entrance to the city’s southern gateway at South Queen Street and Highland Avenue. The tree planting is one part of the South Prince & South Queen Streets Neighborhood Enhancement Project, led by Lancaster City Alliance. The overall project includes improvements to fronts of homes, Adopt-A-Block participation, placement of sidewalk trash cans, and 100 trees for the neighborhood. The project stems from requests from neighbors and is part of recommendations in the city’s Building on Strength Economic Development Strategic Plan. The recently planted trees were made possible through many groups working together to benefit the city. This includes Lancaster City Alliance, City of Lancaster, Community Action Partnership, and Lancaster Tree Tenders. Funding was provided by the High Family Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ TreeVitalize Program. The Peace Light was received at an arrival ceremony on Dec. 5 at the office of the Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, located at 630 Janet Ave., Suite B-114, Lancaster. The Peace Light will be available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays from Dec. 6 through Friday, Dec. 21, at the council office. For more than 1,000 years, a flame has been continuously lit in the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Israel. As has been an annual tradition for the last 33 years, a Scout from Austria is chosen to light two blastproof miner’s lamps from the grotto flame. The lamps are then carried by jet from Tel Aviv, Israel, to Vienna, Austria. There the Peace Light is distributed at a service of dedication to delegations from across

Europe, and these delegations take the light back to their own countries, along with a message of peace. Since 2004, the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light have been flown from Vienna to New York City. Boy Scout leaders from the U.S. light their lanterns from the miner’s lamps in New York and spread out across the U.S. and Canada to share the Peace Light. This is the first year that

the Pennsylvania Dutch Council will host the Peace Light. The Peace Light is a physical reminder of the reason for the Christmas season. The Pennsylvania Dutch Council serves nearly 5,500 youths in a variety of programs in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Lancaster Farmland Trust celebrated its 30th anniversary at its annual dinner on Oct. 23. More than 230 friends, farmers and supporters attended to honor three decades of land preservation in Lancaster County. The event, which was held at the Eden Resort and Suites, raised $150,000 for farmland preservation in Lancaster County. Event attendees heard from Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding about the value of farmland and the partnership that has been forged between county government and Lancaster Farmland Trust to save farmland. Redding and state Rep. Keith Greiner presented citations to Lancaster Farmland Trust in recognition of 30 years of farmland preservation. The highlight of the evening was Lancaster Farmland Trust’s annual Acres for Auction at which attendees entered “bids” to preserve a farm. During this year’s successful “auction,” the organization raised enough money to preserve a 155-acre farm in West Cocalico Township. In the past year, Lancaster

Customer Care Center Updated The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has modernized its online Customer Care Center - www.cus tomercare.penndot.gov - to make it easier to report concerns on state-maintained roadways with new mapping capabilities, optional photo uploads, and a mobilefriendly interface. The purpose of the new Customer Care Center is to make it easier for members of the public to share their concerns or feedback. The modernized service sorts concerns into categories: road or bridge conditions; removing something from a roadway; traffic, signs, or signals; ongoing roadwork or projects; or general questions and concerns. Users can map their current location to document a concern or choose an address or roadway, as well as

other relevant location information, and even upload photos related to the concern. These descriptions will provide better information for PennDOT staff and can reduce the amount of time needed to gather more information from customers submitting concerns. As of Sept. 30, the previous Customer Care Center had nearly 45,000 concerns submitted this year. More than 96 percent of those concerns have been resolved. Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county, municipality, street name, and state route number, which can be found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition,

a description of any familiar landmarks would be helpful for PennDOT to locate the problem area. Maintenance concerns will be corrected as soon as possible. Emergency road repairs, such as road wash-outs, are handled on a top-priority basis. Concerns may also be reported through 800-FIX-ROAD (800349-7623), though the number should not be used to report traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. Motorists should continue to call 911 to report these types of emergencies. Customers with questions or concerns related to driver or vehicle services should visit www.dmv.pa .gov. For concerns related to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, readers should visit www.paturn pike.com.

The winners of the 2018 Code4PA codeathon have created a mobile app that provides users with personalized recommendations for opioid addiction treatment. The winners were selected from 28 projects developed by teams of participants from across the state. More than 350 technology professionals, addiction and recovery experts, college students, state officials and others took part in this year’s Code4PA, which kicked off on Sept. 20 in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The teams returned on Oct. 20 to demonstrate their projects for judging. The app, called Care4PA, suggests services and treatment providers based on information provided by the user such as his or her location and insurance provider. Users can also view other patients’ ratings of providers. Over time, the app will use this feedback to refine and improve recommendations. The app also provides state officials with insight into provider performance and utilization. Participants used opioid data from the state open data portal and other sources, as well as mobile, GIS and other technologies to develop app prototypes, data visualizations and other tools focused on prevention,

Tips Shared For Healthier Holidays Skin Protection Information Posted About 70 percent of the sodi- may substitute equal parts unsweetThe American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good initiative offers simple swaps for healthier holidays. The association provides its latest recipes and science-backed health tips as part of Eat Smart Month, which was observed in November. Taking small steps and avoiding one common mistake putting good habits on hold - is recommended. People may celebrate the season with no regrets by enjoying special occasion foods in moderation and swapping in healthier substitutions when they have control over the menu. To be at one’s peak this holiday season, American Heart Association-approved recipe hacks are offered. Additional recipes are available at www.heart.org/eat smartmonth.

um Americans consume comes from processed, prepackaged, or restaurant foods. Reading labels is a simple way to net healthy results. Compare the nutrition facts on similar foods and go for the one with less sodium, including frozen varieties. Salt can be replaced with herbs and spices. Lemon juice, citrus zest, or hot chilies can add extra flavor without the added sodium. Canned fruits packed in juice or water rather than syrup are recommended. Fruit is plenty sweet without added sugars. Overly ripe fruit can be used to sweeten baked goods. Non-fat, plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream is a healthy swap with the same texture and flavor. Instead of butter, a healthier vegetable oil can be used, or people

ened applesauce when baking. Sneaking in a vegetable like pureed sweet potatoes, carrots, or cauliflower can boost nutrition. Frozen cubes of pureed vegetable can be ready in the freezer. Using half whole wheat and half white flour is also recommended. Whole grains are a great nutritional boost, and mixing the flours helps to disguise the swap. People can sip smarter by adding seasonal fruit to old-fashioned water. There are plenty of ways to jazz up a beverage without adding alcohol. Readers are encouraged to t r y infusing cranberries, pomegranate arils, or orange slices into sparkling water. To learn more, readers may visit www.heart.org or call 800-AHA-USA1.

It is easy to associate vigilant sun protection with summertime, when the sun is shining intensely. However, sun protection is necessary every day, regardless of the weather or time of year. Even when it is cold or overcast, UV rays that cause skin aging and skin cancer are reaching the skin. In the right winter weather conditions, people can sustain sun damage just as easily as during the summer. UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, are the strongest in the summer. However, UVB rays can burn and damage skin yearround, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice. Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light,

so the rays hit twice, further increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging. UVA rays remain constant throughout the year and can penetrate through clouds and fog. UVA rays can also penetrate glass, so it is still possible to damage skin while spending a bright winter day indoors. The first line of defense against this sun damage is clothing. Covering up is easier in the winter, because it is cold, but the face, head, and neck tend to remain exposed year-round, and this is where most skin cancers occur. People should not forget their UV-blocking sunglasses and broad-brimmed hat before heading out. Sunglasses protect the

eyes while also fighting snow glare, and a hat keeps the head warm while keeping UV rays from damaging the scalp. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher should be applied daily to all exposed skin. People should make sure to cover often-missed spots like the tops of their ears, around the eyes, and near the hairline. Individuals should consider choosing a moisturizing sunscreen with ingredients like lanolin or glycerin to combat dry winter skin. Finally, people should try to avoid the peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and seek shade when they can. For more information, readers may visit www.skincancer.org.

Rock Ford Sets Yuletide Tours Rock Ford’s annual Yuletide tours provide a journey back in time to when Christmas Day was only the beginning of the season. Candlelight, festive music, dancing, and holiday greenery will set the scene for an 18thcentury Yuletide at Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. During the period when General Hand and his family lived at Rock Ford, Christmas Day marked the start of a festive season that included 12 days of parties, dinners and dances. Visitors to Rock Ford’s Yuletide tours will learn about 18th-century traditions, listen to traditional holiday music by the Harrisburg-based musical group Seasons and watch preparations in the mansion’s kitchen by members of the Warm Hearth Club. Costumed volunteers will be stationed in various rooms of the mansion offering insight into Yuletide traditions. The candlelight tours will feature period dancing by a volunteer dance group. A new show, “Marionettes in the Mansion,” will mark the culmination of Yuletide at Rock Ford. A joint production with the Lancaster Marionette Theatre, the show will be staged in the mansion and will celebrate the life and times of Hand and his family. The show will feature the talents of Robert Brock. Previews will be held during

Campaign To Aid Bethesda Mission

Mini Merry Meatballs Presents may get much of the glory during the holiday season, but there is much to be said about the foods found throughout this time of year as well. Whether one is hosting a holiday soiree or plans to bring something to a potluck party, it is helpful to have a list of fail-proof recipes at the ready. Tasting menus, bite-sized treats, and finger foods are always a hit at holiday functions - and this recipe for Mini Merry Meatballs, courtesy of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, is sure to please. Paired with a cranberry barbecue sauce, these savory appetizers are bursting with flavor and holiday appeal.

1 cup seasoned stuffing mix 1 egg, beaten 3 tablespoons water 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper

Mini Merry Meatballs (Serves 24) 1/2 pound ground beef brisket 1/4 pound ground beef ribeye steak, boneless 1/4 pound ground beef (80 percent lean)

Instructions: Preheat oven to 400 F. Combine brisket, ribeye, ground beef, stuffing mix, egg, water, garlic, salt, and pepper in a large bowl, mixing lightly but

Your

Cranberry Barbecue Sauce: 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1/2 cup chopped white onion 1 tablespoon minced garlic 2 1/2 cups fresh cranberries 1/2 cup orange juice 1/2 cup water 1/3 cup ketchup 1/4 cup light brown sugar 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 tablespoons molasses 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper Salt

thoroughly. Shape into 24 1.5inch meatballs. Place on a rack in a broiler pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes until the internal temperature reads 160 F. Meanwhile, prepare the Cranberry Barbecue Sauce. Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic; cook and stir 2 to 3 minutes, or until tender, but not brown. Add remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until cranberries burst and the mixture has been reduced to a thick consistency, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; cool slightly. Transfer mixture to blender container. Cover, allowing steam to escape. Process until smooth. Season with salt, as desired. Serve meatballs with barbecue sauce.

Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown will celebrate the season with decorations and a collection campaign to help the Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg. During the holidays and throughout the winter, Indian Echo Caverns will accept donations of men’s, women’s and children’s socks for Bethesda Mission. While coats, gloves, hats, and other clothing are needed as well, having socks on hand at all times is a necessity. Donations will be collected in the Indian Echo Caverns gift shop.

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer

Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the

like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday

John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. A limited number of tickets may be available on the night of the tours but are not

Holiday Tree Tips gets home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day.

The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

Natural Christmas tree aficionados love the authenticity such trees provide during the holiday season. Natural trees also provide a unique aroma that can make holiday celebrations feel more homey. A few simple strategies can help holiday revelers ensure their Christmas trees make it through the holiday season unscathed. When purchasing natural trees, holiday celebrants, especially those who like to buy their trees in early December, may be concerned about keeping their trees fresh throughout the holiday season. Several tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been consumed. The first tip is to buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, people should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season. If it is not possible to cut one’s own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree should be wrapped in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season. Pre-cut trees should be cut again before leaving the lot. Precut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it

The congregation of Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, would like to invite the community to its free Christmas meal and program on Saturday, Dec. 22. Dinner will be served promptly at 6 p.m., with a brief program to follow. Everyone is welcome to attend the free event. Dinner will be served family-style at tables set up in the church gymnasium. The

menu will include ham, green beans, baked potatoes, applesauce, rolls, and assorted desserts. The meal will be prepared and served by members of Ruhl’s UMC. Those planning to attend are encouraged to sign up by calling the church at 717-665-3400. Organizer Seth Achey noted that reservations are not required but are strongly encouraged in order to give organizers an idea of how much food to prepare. Live Christmas music will be

performed before and during the meal by the Ruhl’s UMC band, and a Gospel message will be presented at the close of the meal. Achey said that the purpose of the event is to share the good news and love of Jesus Christ. Last year, approximately 150 people attended the meal. “The tradition started with members of the church wanting to share a Christmas meal with those in need of one and share the good news at the same time,” stated Achey. “I may

sound like a broken record, but that is our life’s purpose - to share Christ’s love and message with others.” Ruhl’s UMC offers a traditional Sunday worship service each week at 8 a.m., with a contemporary-style service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school classes for people of all ages take place from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. For more information about the church or the Christmas meal and program, readers may visit www.ruhlschurch.org.

Ruhl’s United Methodist Church will host a free community Christmas meal and program on Dec. 22. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Monday, December 24th

The first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King’s College in Cambridge, England was held on Christmas Eve in 1918. Following the 100 year tradition at King’s College, the opening carol will be Once in David’s Royal City. Worship will conclude with a candle lighting service and the congregation singing two final carols.

R026608

The worship will be an adaptation of the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. The service recalls the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus as told in nine Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books, and the Gospels. The lessons are interspersed with solos and the singing of Christmas carols and hymns. Come join us
