According to members of Ranck’s United Methodist Church, 700 Ranck Road, New Holland, there is such a thing as a free lunch. “To be able to serve a need in an unbiased, nonjudgmental way … that’s the purpose,” said Kris Pursel, pastor at Ranck’s, “That’s the message behind ‘Love and Care Is Found Here,’” he said, referring to the tagline on the yard signs the church has put out to advertise the new free lunch program.
“Free Drive Thru Lunch” reads the yard sign outside the church. The free lunches will be handed out on the second Saturday of every month from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or until the lunches are gone. The church has a drive-through portico on the north side, where the lunches are easily distributed to recipients in cars. Each person in the vehicle may receive a lunch. The next free lunch event will be
held on Saturday, Jan. 11.
Free lunch
The effort is led by Dee Kopicz and Anne Folker with help from Lisa Kurtz and a few other volunteers who meet on the Friday before a lunch distribution to make lunches for at least 50 recipients. Kopicz reported that the November lunch preparation involved five volunteers making sandwiches for 30 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of packing bags with the sandwiches; fruit; a snack, such as chips or pretzels; a bottle of water; and a dessert. The November distribution included Halloween candy, and the December lunch bags contained Christmas candy.
According to Kopicz, Ranck’s members tend to be mission minded, supporting local organizations such as CrossNet Ministries and Align Pregnancy Services and sending Christmas cards to veterans in hospice.

Making seniors comfortable
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“I want (seniors) to have a space (at Welcome Home Thrift & More),” said Alisha Wambolt, executive director of the thrift store. “Surprisingly, over the last year, several widows and other seniors have come in saying, ‘It’s so cold out that I don’t want to be outside, but I don’t want to just sit at home,’” Wambolt explained. She noted that seniors are looking for something to do, but they may not be able to make a commitment to volunteer. In response, Wambolt pictured an area where seniors could relax

Christian schools in Lancaster County have never really been competitors. Now they’re working together to align their missions and streamline their efforts.
The upcoming Christian Education Fair is an event that’s designed to draw strength from numbers, explore and promote the increasing popularity of Christian education and provide
families with learning opportunities that are aligned with their beliefs and their children’s needs.
“It’s not that we were against each other; it’s we weren’t working together,” said Jill Armstrong, Lancaster County Christian School’s events and communication coordinator and one of the organizers of the event. “I just think there wasn’t an intentional collaboration. We

for people with disabilities in Lebanon and Lancaster counties. So, when Kopicz, who works part time for Ebenezer Church in Brownstown, saw that church distributing lunches from their facility, she brought the idea to Pursel.
“I thought, ‘Why can’t we do it here?’” recalled Kopicz. The brainchild led to a series of discussions between congregant and pastor. “Pastor Kris asked me, ‘Where are we going with this?’ and ‘What are we trying to accomplish?’” said Kopicz, who prepared a presentation for church members before the program kicked off in November.

“We aren’t on Main Street in New Holland,” she said, adding that homeless members of the community are more likely to be on Main Street than out on Ranck Road. But Kopicz described a scenario including people who could benefit from the effort. “This (lunch program) is about single moms and dads who work,” she said. “Maybe they have a couple children, and they are barely making it, but they make a little too much to qualify for aid.” Kopicz noted that people in this situation are often exhausted and living from paycheck to paycheck. “And then sometimes life happens,” she noted, listing issues such as a car breaking down or an increase in rent or child care. “They just need a break, and ‘Wow! It’s a free lunch!’” Pursel said that Kopicz’s answer challenged his paradigms. “I had this idea of going to where the need is as compared to the need coming to you,” he said, adding that Kopicz felt strongly that need is everywhere. “It’s not limited to Main Street or the big city,” he said. Although a contact card goes into each lunch bag, Kopicz noted that lunch program participants may be more comfortable at a drive-through. “People might not feel quite as intimidated when they don’t have to come in and sit down and eat,” she said.
Finding recipients for leftover lunches was important to organizing the effort. In November, 35 of 50 lunches were given out. Kopicz found that City Gate and Good Samaritan Services in Ephrata

can learn from each other. We can grow in different ways as we collaborate. We’re trying to find ways to work as one.”
The inaugural Christian Education Fair will be staged from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, at Lancaster Bible College’s Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Representatives of a dozen Christian schools in Lancaster County - Anchor Christian Academy, Dayspring Christian Academy, Hinkletown Mennonite School, Kraybill Mennonite School, Lancaster County Christian School, Lancaster Mennonite School, Linville Hill Christian School, Lititz Area Mennonite School, Lititz Christian School, Mainstay Christian Academy, Mount Calvary Christian School and Veritas Academy - will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.
Many of the Christian schools that will be represented are nondenominational private institutions
designed for students in prekindergarten through grade 12. The Christian Education Fair will inform visitors about the schools’ curriculum, athletics, arts, extracurricular activities, transportation, tuition, financial aid and enrollment processes.
“I hope that it’s unifying and energizing,” said Armstrong of the education fair’s atmosphere. “I hope that it’s upbeat and there’s lively conversation. I hope the schools encourage people to ask questions. I hope there’s kind of like a family feel.”
The event is free to attend, everyone is welcome and no registration is required.
“There are a lot of options out there, and it can be overwhelming,” said Armstrong. “I think there are families asking themselves, ‘Do I do Christian schools? Do I do public schools? Do I do homeschooling?’ I think you’ll see families with new kindergarten-age children. I think

you’ll see parents of students who are experiencing natural transitions, from elementary school to middle school, from middle school to high school. There’s no pressure, no commitment; just come and learn.”
Organizers of the Christian Education Fair sent out event invitations to 18 Christian schools in Lancaster County to participate.
“Enrollment in Christian schools
is growing rapidly,” said Armstrong. “I think we offer something different that families are attracted to. Most Christian schools are places of community. We want to showcase our uniqueness. But what might be right for one family might not be right for another. We’re kind of on a mission together. I think all of the Christian schools would say similar things.”

Kopicz recalled that at the first distribution people commented on how nice the program was and thanked the church members for making the effort. “One woman said that her dad was there (to receive a lunch), and he called her, so she came with her son,” recalled Kurtz. Kopicz noted that a number of senior citizens received lunches as well.
Pursel said because the church is promoting the program, it is hoped that the number of meals distributed will increase. “Initially, we didn’t want to bite off more than we could chew,” he explained. “Once we had a backup plan for extra meals, it went from having a risk to having no risk.” Knowing that no food would be wasted was important to organizers. “These meals will find value to the people they are reaching, and they will all find a home,” he said.

and help with small jobs that do not require a lot of time. Wambolt’s vision has come to fruition in the creation of a special area at the back of the store’s main showroom designated for socializing or simply relaxing. The area, which resembles a living room with comfortable and inviting décor, is named Grace’s Corner after Wambolt’s grandmother. “She was the first senior and widow I ever knew,” said Wambolt, who has a special call to reach out to those who have lost their spouses. “I can’t imagine being a new widow, and some are in their early 50s,” said Wambolt of her sympathy for those in this stage of life. “(They may be thinking), ‘OK, what am I going to do with my time?’” she stated. “They want to be around people, but maybe they don’t want to commit to a full schedule of
volunteering.” The new space on the main floor will give seniors who visit an opportunity to be near others as well as something to do. “We need a lot of grace to work through that season (of life),” shared Wambolt.
Activities will include puzzles that will be stocked in a cupboard at one end of the space, and there will be magazines in a rack. Seniors can bring a book or grab one off the store shelf to look
at. Wambolt is also considering putting a television in the space so visiting seniors can watch movies. “(A visitor) could invite a friend to come and chat,” said Wambolt, who noted that coffee is available at the front of the store for those who prefer to talk over a cup.
Puzzle workers will actually be doing the thrift shop a favor. “We put all of our puzzles together to make sure they have all their

pieces, so that’s something they could do,” Wambolt pointed out. “We are getting donations of puzzles by the boxload.” Preparing clothing for sale is another way seniors can help while enjoying some company. “We steam 90% of our clothing, so someone is running the steamer all the time,” said Wambolt. “So that’s something easy they could do.”
“Our goal would be to focus on (providing) a place to go where (visiting seniors) can be around people and converse if they want to, but they don’t have to,” said Wambolt. “They won’t have to sit at home alone.”
Welcome Home Thrift, in the Ironspire complex at 2800 N. Reading Road, Suite 430, Adamstown, supports Home International, a ministry to young girls in India. Volunteers are sought to sort donations and work in the shop on a regular basis. Wambolt noted that groups are needed for onetime projects. Applications may be picked up at the store.

type of private education available to Lancaster County students. The origins of local Christian schools date back to the early 1900s, and their growth seems to be associated with periods of time when some became nondenominational.
“I think we are really privileged to live in a part of the world that has so many Christian schools,” said Armstrong. “I think the county has a lot of history of prioritizing Christian education, just by the number of Christian schools that there are. Over the years, I’ve watched schools better articulate their missions. Christian education emphasizes a biblical worldview and studying the Word of God.”
