Families invited to a Night of Champions

When Diana Roth, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) area representative for ELANCO, wanted a way to honor the students she works with at Garden Spot, Cocalico, and Lancaster Mennonite high schools and to commemorate the eight years of FCA in ELANCO, she thought about holding a family-oriented event. “It will be a celebration recognizing student-athletes and student leaders,” said Roth of the first event she is calling Night of Champions.

Night of Champions will be held at Christian Fellowship Church, 758 Spruce Road, New Holland, on Thursday, March 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The special guest speaker for the event will be Chad Ryland, National Football League kicker for the Arizona Cardinals. There is no charge to attend, and dessert and coffee will be served.

A crop for a cause

According to Denise Crissup, crafting retreats are to some women what a trip to deer camp is for some men. “This is like a day version of (enjoying that kind of camaraderie),” said Crissup with a chuckle. Crissup, along with Michelle Steinbrecher and Juliana Sauder, is organizing the first fundraising crop to benefit the Bowmansville Fire Company (BFC).

The BFC fundraiser crop, which will offer a total of 24 hours of crafting, will be held over two days - Friday, March 28, and

all-county place kicker. Ryland attended the University of Michigan and later transferred to the University of Maryland, where, Roth said, he became involved in FCA. Ryland played for the New England Patriots in 2023 and 2024 before being signed by the Cardinals. Roth first heard Ryland’s story at an

FCA Huddle at Cocalico High School (CHS). “I really appreciated his testimony,” said Roth, who asked Ryland, who has relatives associated with CHS, if he would speak at the event.

“He said, ‘Absolutely,’” recalled Roth, who added that Ryland will bring an autographed football as a banquet prize and participate in a meet-and-greet.

“(Ryland) is a perfect fit (for this event),” stated Roth. Roth’s goal in holding the banquet is to celebrate God’s work in ELANCO by recognizing students, coaches, and volunteers with the organization.

“(The plan is to honor) specific students from Garden Spot High School, CHS, and Lancaster Mennonite High School,” explained Roth, who noted that FCA is a student-initiated and student-led organization. “I work with the students, equipping them with tools and resources,” she said, adding that the core values of FCA are “integrity, serving,

Ministry assists men in crisis

Jaime Santiago knows what it’s like to battle addiction.

He went through it and turned his life around.

Jaime (pronounced “HI-mee”) is the founder and executive director of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), an organization that aims to assist those who are facing situations similar to the ones he encountered.

Jaime and his wife, Pam, have dedicated their lives to helping men who have undergone trauma

and adverse childhood experiences as well as the men’s families.

Jaime said RTCM, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, helps men who experience anxiety, depression, resentment, bitterness, unforgiveness, and attachment issues.

He noted that these issues can make the men more susceptible to getting involved with life-control problems. “As a Christian resident discipleship mission, we provide housing, 35 hours of clinical and pastoral counseling, and education,”

Library seeking donations

The ELANCO Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, is urgently seeking donations to help close its funding gap. The library receives some funding from local and state governments but is responsible for raising approximately 60% or more of its annual operating budget each year through local fundraisers, donations, and grants. The Library System of Lancaster County received a significant funding cut for 2025, which in turn means less funding for the ELANCO Library. Donations may be made at www.elancolibrary .org/donate or at the library.

The ELANCO Library participates in PA Forward, the Pennsylvania Library Association’s 21st-century literacies initiative, which encourages libraries to offer programs, services, and collections that foster the development of basic literacy, information literacy, civic and social literacy, health literacy, and financial literacy. The ELANCO Library earned the Gold Star designation within the program for the 2023-24 year. For more information on PA Forward, visit https:// paforward.org/.

Jaime said. RTCM also provides marriage and family counseling in its leased building at 2324 Leaman Road, Lancaster.

“People say, ‘You’re a rehab,’” said Jaime, who is an ordained minister and has a degree in licensed professional counseling from Liberty University. “I say, ‘Oh, we’re not a rehab. We’re a residential recovery support program.’”

Men can learn more about RTCM by visiting https://restartministry .org or calling 717-3043341. “The only criteria for us is, ‘Do you want to improve your life?’” Jaime said. “And if they do, they get better. If they don’t, they’re never going to get out of the wilderness.”

RTCM is a family venture. Pam is RTCM’s office manager, bookkeeper, and events director. Jaime and Pam’s daughters, Cassie Santiago, the graphic designer and marketing manager, and Querida Carrington, the social media manager, are also part of the team. Jaime’s brother, Pedro, is on the board of directors. Many of the staff members graduated from the treatment program.

Lancaster County Prison.

Early during his time in jail, Jaime said he was consumed by dark thoughts before a cellmate convinced him to go to the chapel. “The first thing he said to me was, ‘Do you want to go to chapel with me?’” Jaime recalled. “I said, ‘Huh?’ but I eventually figured out what chapel was. I told him, ‘I will go one time, but if I don’t like it, don’t ask me again.’ I went, and that was the first time I heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I was blown away.”

Jaime has first-hand experience with a treatment program. He said there was “a lot of chaos” in his childhood home in New Jersey. “Whatever childhood trauma one could mention, I experienced as a child growing up in a dysfunctional home,” Jaime said. “That led me to not being taught how to function in life.”

Jaime stated that a pastor helped him realize, “God loves me, and He wants to have a relationship with me and forgive me for my sins.” That message resonated with him.

After getting out of prison, Jaime participated in Teen Challenge, which provides addiction treatment programs. Jaime established RTCM in 2015, and men first entered the building on Feb. 1, 2016. “You learn how to better help people,” he said. “You learn what doesn’t work and what does work. You have a lot of great celebrations, and you have ones who complete the program, but unfortunately don’t apply what they learned, and they relapse. It’s a mountaintop or down-in-the-valley experience.”

As he got older, Jaime abused alcohol and experimented with drugs. “By the time I was 13, I was addicted and committing crimes to support my addictions,” he said.

Jaime was incarcerated for eight years. He became a born-again Christian 38 years ago during a stint in

“Something physically just lifted off me,” Jaime said. “For the first time of my life, at the age of 20, I gave my life to God, and that was the first time I had peace and the first time in my life I felt loved. I knew from that very moment I would never be the same again.”

Jaime said 78 men have graduated from the program, which charges clients $3,000 for a sixmonth stay. Fundraising efforts help defray the costs.

RTCM, which currently houses 12 clients, recently began a capital campaign to raise money for a new location, which would house up to 24 men. A second phase of the campaign would provide additional housing for graduates of the program, who would pay rent.

Anyone wishing to donate to RTCM can visit https://rtcm.givesmart .com. RTCM is introducing a peer-to-peer fundraising program, which encourages contributors to create a personal fundraising page and invite friends and family to donate.

Saturday, March 29 - at Living Hope Christian Fellowship Church, 1488 Reading Road, Mohnton, just outside Bowmansville. On March 28, the crop will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 10 p.m. Lunch, dinner, snacks, and beverages will be included in the table price. On March 29, the crop will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and brunch, dinner, snacks, and beverages will be included.

Although crops originally were scrapbooking events, the BFC fundraiser will welcome individuals doing any kind of craft. “(Participants) bring whatever they’re working on to work on with friends,” explained Crissup.

“You bring your own projects and supplies.” Crissup noted that some craft enthusiasts bring everything they are working on while others only

bring certain projects. “There have been people who bring supplies but just use the day to organize and get ideas,” she noted. Crissup has run a similar event in Morgantown to benefit the Twin Valley Food Pantry for the last two years, and she recalled some of the types of crafts she has seen participants bring to that event. “One woman brought a sewing machine to do pre-quilting,” said Crissup, adding that another woman made fleece blankets, fringing the edges and tying them off. Other participants make jewelry or do diamond painting.

“It’s just the ladies getting together and doing what they like to do anyway, and the funds go to whichever charity,” explained Crissup. “Each woman rents her own table,” Crissup noted, adding that the 8-foot tables will

be arranged for easy conversation and networking. “Friends can rent adjacent tables,” she pointed out, noting that a space on the registration form asks a participant whom she would like to have at adjoining tables. “We push tables together and seat accordingly,” she stated.

Crissup said local restaurants are contacted regarding food for the event and that the registration form asks about food allergies. A few scrapbooking vendors will have displays at the event as well.

Crissup, who has run scrapbooking retreats in the past, first became involved with fundraising crops when she took part in one in the Boyertown area as a vendor. While there, she and a friend connected with the organizer of the Morgantown event and learned that she

planned to step down. That crop was being held once a year in the winter. Crissup and her friend rescheduled the event for two days. “We are using that same framework for this event,” noted Crissup, who first brought up the possibility of doing a fire company benefit at a fall BFC meeting. BFC members were interested in having her hold a similar event. “There is some excitement,” said Crissup, who noted she would like to see all 50 tables full for both days of the crop.

“I’m hoping to fill 30, but 50 would be fabulous,” she said. Crissup said organizers hope to raise up to $5,000 for BFC and that funds will be used for operational expenses and for the new engine the fire company is purchasing for about $900,000.

Readers who wish to take part in the crop may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Bowmansville Fire Company Fundraiser Crop.” Individuals with questions may email denise.crissup@bowmans villefire.org.

“Whatever craft you can do yourself and hang out with your friends, give yourself permission to spend a day or two doing that,” said Crissup, who also suggested brainstorming with friends at the crop or walking around to see what others have brought to work on. “Some gals who know each other only meet up a few times a year, and they share photos,” she said.

“That’s the main focus.”

CLS to feature

Dr. Irvin Scott

According to Ellie Green, communications director with The Factory Ministries, when some Factory staff members heard Dr. Irvin Scott speak through Harvard University’s Leadership Institute for Faith and Education (L.I.F.E.) Convening event, they were impressed with the educator’s teaching. “His work has inspired and shaped us,” shared Green, who added that the recent publication of Scott’s book “Leading With Heart and Soul” seemed to indicate that the time might be right to invite Scott to Paradise. “We thought (Scott) would be the perfect fit for a Community Leadership Summit (CLS) designed to encourage leaders,” she explained.

The third annual CLS to be hosted by The Factory Ministries will be held on Friday, March 7, at The Factory, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. There is a cost to attend the CLS, which includes a hot breakfast and coffee from Speckled Hen, a copy of Scott’s book, a question-and-answer session, and networking with local leaders. Because tickets are limited, organizers request that those wishing to attend register by Monday, March 3, using the “CLS” event link on the home page at www.thefactoryminis tries.com.

Scott is considered an expert in organizational leadership, as well as entrepreneurship and educational reform. “This event is for all leaders, whether or not their focus is education,” noted Green. Scott’s experience in education includes teaching, as well as serving as principal and assistant superintendent. He was principal at McCaskey High School in Lancaster for four years. Scott was the deputy director for kindergarten through 12th-grade education at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as the chief academic officer for Boston Public Schools. Currently, he is

a member of the faculty of Harvard’s Graduate School of Education.

Scott’s new book is based on his experience in the classroom, school, and district education and as a nonprofit leader, as well as spiritual principles.

Readers may find motivation in the stories Scott tells and the strategies he recommends. Answers to questions such as “How do we empower innovative, servant-hearted leaders?” and “How do we inspire communities to support the learning journeys of local youths?” are spotlighted along with information of how to reach the goal of offering equitable opportunities to learning so that each student has the necessary resources to thrive.

“(CLS events are held) as a way to support and encourage our local leaders and give back to the community,” said Green.

The Factory Ministries began more than 30 years ago as a youth center located in a building that had previously been a sewing factory. More recently, the ministry moved to the former Paradise Elementary School and began to remake the building into a facility that can better serve the needs of the community.

Over the years, the organization has grown to offer a food pantry, known as The Factory Market, and adult advocacy services, along with a family housing center. The Braves Learning Center focuses on educational needs with the goal of addressing poverty through changing a child’s trajectory. For more information, readers may search for “The Factory Ministries” on Facebook. Readers who have specific questions may call 717-687-9594.
