Afew years ago during a New Holland Community Collaboration meeting, then-CrossNet Ministries director Meredith Dahl, who moderated the meetings at that time, asked if anyone present would be interested in forming a mental health committee. “A lot of things have been birthed at Community Collaboration meetings,” said Joan Yunginger, director of social services with CrossNet Ministries and a regular Community Collaboration attendee. “Problems come up. (These are issues) people are seeing.”
In response to Dahl’s request, a group, now called the New Holland Mental Health Committee, formed. “We started in 2023. Our first meeting (was held) in June,” recalled Christine Ansari, social worker at Garden Spot High School (GSHS). “We meet about every six to eight weeks depending on what’s on our task list.”
According to Ansari, the No. 1 task on that list was to help connect community members with the help they needed. “Our first initiative was to create a list of resources we trust,” she explained, adding that the list contained referrals of trusted sources. “(It was not just an internet search) of outpatient services near me,” she explained. “We wanted to create a list of agencies (that we know).” That list was created and housed at www.elancoevents.com/resources.
Yunginger noted that counseling services are available in New Holland and that those in need may arrange for an appointment through CrossNet. “It’s designed for people who don’t have insurance or whose insurance doesn’t cover this or if the copay is too much,” explained Yunginger, who added that CrossNet can subsidize sessions in some situations.
Mental health counseling is provided through Lifepoint Counseling services. “(CrossNet) makes a referral to Lifepoint Counseling,”

EPC Golf Outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Like golfers who win the Masters Tournament and the green jackets tailored for them, Good Samaritan Services (Good Sam) and Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) are ideally suited for one another.

The charity event will be held Friday, June 6, at Crossgates

The first will tee off at 7:30 a.m., and the second will start at 1:30 p.m. A light breakfast and a chicken barbecue lunch will be served to the morning groups; the afternoon groups will receive a light café lunch and a chicken barbecue meal for dinner. Offering help and compassion
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Shannon Rios, outreach and public relations coordinator with Lighthouse Church, once struggled with addiction and homelessness. That firsthand knowledge makes her keenly aware of the needs of recipients of His Helping Hands Food Pantry and the Compassion Closet clothing pantry that she oversees at the church.
“I know what’s easy and what’s not,” Rios stated. “If you go to a food pantry and they give you cans, that’s great, but what if (you) don’t have a can opener?”
The food and clothing pantries at Lighthouse Church, 1279 Main St., East Earl, are open the first and third Fridays of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. Rios noted that the church hopes to serve one community meal a month in conjunction with the pantry dates.

According to Rios, the church has had a food pantry since the early 1990s. Storage space was an issue before the congregation recently built the new church at the present location. The food and clothing pantries opened for the first time in the new church on the evening of March 7. Pantry recipients drive through the portico at the right of the church, and while waiting to enter the food pantry, recipients may sit in the gym and peruse the clothing closet. Clothing available to recipients includes gently used items in season, as well as shoes and accessories, for people of all ages and either gender.
At the previous location, recipients filled out a form with their name and the size of the household, and then volunteers retrieved food items in accordance with those needs. “Now we have the space for them to walk through (with a volunteer) and get their own food,” said Rios of the choice pantry at the new location. On a tour of the pantry, Rios pointed out the poultry and ground turkey and hot dogs in the pantry’s refrigerators and freezers. Because of the state-of-the art church kitchen off the gym, Rios said that volunteers can freeze family- and individual-size packets of meat. “We work with local farms and grocery stores,” said Rios, who noted
donations have come from Shady Maple Farm Market and Pepperidge Farm. “We have eggs, cheese, bread, and we have a beautiful space (for) fruits and vegetables.”
The food pantry also stocks toiletries and household goods, which Rios pointed out cannot be purchased with SNAP food stamps. More information about the food pantry and a list of needed items may be found at www.lighthouse ag.com/foodpantry, but Rios noted that certain types of foods are always in demand. “Any type of premade pasta in cans and Hamburger Helper-type meals that can be made with or without meat, cereal, and kids’ snacks (are good donations),” she stated, adding that peanut butter and jelly are always welcome. Donations must be in date. Other needs include toilet paper, laundry soap in a variety of sizes, dish soap, and feminine hygiene products. Diapers and baby wipes are also accepted. Readers who wish to donate may call 717-354-0056, ext. 115, or email srios@lighthouse ag.com.
Clothing for the Compassion Closet may be dropped off the first Saturday of each month from 9 to 11 a.m. Clothing should be gently used and in season if possible. “We are looking for spring and summer (items) now,” said Rios, who added that she will never turn away a good pair of children’s snow boots because it is not that season.
Committee from pg 1
explained Yunginger. If a client can visit Lifepoint’s offices, they make the appointment and see a counselor of their choosing. Appointments are also available at CrossNet offices, usually on Thursday afternoons. “If they don’t have transportation, then it’s in our office,” said Yunginger, who noted that CrossNet also partners with the Petra Church counseling office if a client prefers to go there. “There’s a (counselor) for youth, as well and (those sessions are) held at the CrossNet Youth Center,” she added.
Now, the committee is planning its first event, a resource fair to be held in June. The committee has invited both local organizations and some from as far away as Hershey to set up displays and provide information to local families. Ansari noted that in addition to mental health resources, the committee plans to engage with parenting resources and med-
ical enrollment assistance and give out information on vaccine clinics at the event.
“There are a lot of needs,” shared Ansari, who stated that the committee asked questions about the best ways to inform local residents about resources when planning the fair. “These are our trusted agencies,” she added. “That’s what matters.”
CrossNet social services offices are located at 127 W. Franklin St., New Holland. More information about the organization may be found at https://elanco cross.org. Readers who have specific questions may call 717-355-2454.

Pointing out the importance of having quality items, such as makeup and personal care items, to give away, Rios stated, “Dignity is a big thing.” She noted that at Christmas the church holds a Filling Up Families event, and she has witnessed how much it means to young women to have access to good personal products. “It’s embarrassing to get food,” she said. “We need to have nice things to give to people, and this will help out a lot.” Rios also plans to reach out to schools and area social services organizations so the ministry can help provide clothing especially to mothers and children in need. In the future, Rios hopes to see the ministry grow. “We will definitely get more shelves and more items,” she stated, looking around the pantry. “This is a really great start.”

Wreaths Across America receives donation
MISSION BBQ donated $352,930 to the national nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) on Feb. 27.
The contribution was made possible thanks to the generosity of MISSION BBQ customers and their support of the American Heroes Cup campaign. The donation will sponsor veterans’ wreaths to remember fallen U.S. service members laid to rest at 142 participating locations for placement on National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, Dec. 13.
Thanks to donations collected at the Wyomissing location, 127 veterans’ wreaths have been allocated for placement at Fairview Cemetery and
Fairview Cemetery Annex in Denver.
WAA is best known for its annual wreath-laying ceremonies throughout the United States and beyond at more than 4,900 participating locations. However, the nonprofit’s yearlong mission to “Remember the fallen, honor those who serve and teach the next generation the value of freedom” is carried out by millions of volunteers across the country through many community programs.

wish to sponsor the event or provide prizes can visit the aforementioned website or email EPC marketing and communications director Dan Silva at marketing@ engleonline.com.
“We want to be involved with the communities we serve,” said Jocelyn Engle, who is EPC’s publisher. “We know that some people just need an extra boost in times of need, and this was a perfect fit for us.”
Rachel Shelley, the director of marketing for Good Samaritan Services, agrees. “We love our partnership with EPC,” said Shelley. “Obviously, the funding that comes from the golf outing is helpful in supporting our mission (and) funding the work that we do in the community. Also, EPC is obviously so well-connected, and this is a great awareness-building event for us, too.”
Good Sam has locations across Lancaster and Chester counties and every day serves about 300 people who are in crisis. “Our mission is to respond with compassion to individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness,” Shelley said.
Anyone who needs assistance from Good Samaritan Services can go to https:// goodsamservices.org. A Good Sam representative will conduct a screening via a phone call to determine if the organization can help.
EPC is carrying on a family tradition started by company founder Alvin Engle, who was Jocelyn’s grandfather. Alvin was involved with numerous philanthropic endeavors and set the tone for the company going forward, Jocelyn said. Since its inception, the golf outing has generated nearly $300,000 for neighbors in need. “We want to make the experience memorable for
from pg 1
golfers and also make sure community members are aware of what Good Sam does,” Jocelyn said. “We want to (send the message) that everyone is included. We want to make sure (the golf outing is) affordable for everybody to take part. … I think what’s so neat about our event is we’ve had so many returning sponsors and golfers because it is something people look forward to every year.”
Many of Good Sam’s 30 staff members will volunteer at the golf event. “Our staff loves coming to the golf outing,” Shelley said. “It’s such a cool day for our staff. A lot of them are working directly with the people we serve every day providing case management, and it’s a heavy job. It’s important, important work. It’s really important for our staff to come on the day of the golf outing and see the community support for the work that they’re doing.”
Good Samaritan Services executive director Nate Hoffer will attend the outing. “His true passion for what he and his team members do has been fun for us to watch
as an organization, because we know everyone is being taken care of by Good Sam,” said Jocelyn.
Only 3% of Good Samaritan Services’ budget is funded by the government. “People have been generous and kind in supporting and believing in the work we do,” said Shelley.
Good Sam will be expanding its impact with two homes in Phoenixville. It will be the first time Good Sam will offer housing for women in Phoenixville. The homes will continue to provide safe housing for women facing homelessness, with the added resources of Good Sam.
Shelley stated Good Sam takes an individualized approach to caring for clients.
“Everyone in crisis has their own individual story,” she said. “They are on a unique path on how they are going to reach stability.”
Clients meet one-on-one with a resource coordinator, who provides case management with “bite-size goals” for them to work on, Shelley said. She added Good Sam team members “take this large problem of crisis and break it into sizable goals while walking alongside them in that journey and equipping them with tools.”
There are no quick fixes. The goal is to remove any barriers that might be in the way of clients achieving longterm housing stability.
