Garden Spot

BY ANN MEAD ASH
Organizers of last year’s Taste of New Holland event seem to have found a recipe for success, raising more than $10,000 for Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR). The combination of food trucks, fun for kids, live music, and prizes and giveaways proved appetizing to local residents. This year, a bingo night has been added to the menu to spice up the offerings in hopes of raising more than $15,000. Bingo will be held on Friday, April 25, starting at 6 p.m. in the GSFR Station 1 hall, 339 E. Main St., New Holland. Advance tickets to the 10-game bingo, which are discounted, may be purchased at www.gsfr39.net by midnight on Thursday, April 24. Two special games will also be offered for an extra fee. Among the many prizes organizers have gathered for the event will be themed baskets, 10 Yeti cups, a hot air balloon ride courtesy of Garden Spot Village, two Weber charcoal grills donated by JB Zimmerman Ace Hardware, a bush donated by Sauder’s Nursery, and a trail camera provided by Summers Trucking. “We have dozens of donations from local businesses,” said organizer Danielle Landis, who noted that tickets to attractions including the Magic & Wonder Dinner Theatre and Sight & Sound Theatres, Longwood Gardens, and Hershey Gardens will be prizes.
The Taste of New Holland food truck portion of the event will be held in the GSFR parking lot on April 25 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, April 26, from noon to 7 p.m. On April 25, an intermission will be held during bingo so that players may visit the food trucks. This year, 13 trucks will take part, and each will give a percentage of sales to the fire company. Landis noted that the plan was to incorporate as many
area food trucks as possible, stating, “It’s where local food meets community support.”
Among the many food trucks lined up for the event will be Noel’s Café selling coffee and specialty drinks; Next Level Pizza, which will sell wood-fired pizza; Nice Size Fries, which will provide fresh, hand-cut french fries; Hen House Grilling, which will sell chicken sandwiches and cheesesteaks; Skip’s, which will
offer chicken sandwiches, tenders, and loaded fries; Pappy’s BBQ, which will offer barbecued items; and Castaneda’s, which will add Mexican flavors to the mix. The New Holland Lions Club trailer will sell the hot ham sandwiches for which they are known, and Garden Spot Fire Rescue will offer oyster sandwiches and burgers, with 100% of the proceeds going back to the fire company. Ryan Forbes still recalls the moment in jail in 2003 when he first gave his life to the Lord. In 2004, in state prison, Ryan prayed again, asking God to show him His purpose for Ryan’s life. “I thought I heard Him say, ‘My son, you will preach to the multitudes,’” Ryan recalled.
On April 5, Ryan Forbes Ministries launched at Petra Church. The mission statement for the ministry is “Redeeming and restoring lives through the power and love of Jesus.” The event followed the culmination of 20 years of what Ryan called “learning and growing and being refined.”
“This kind of all came about because for years I have had a burning desire to get the story out about how Jesus can save lives,” said Ryan. “I like to teach, speak, share my heart, and communicate what I believe to be His heart for other people,” said Ryan. “On the journey, I have often felt called to a missional itinerant speaking ministry,” shared Ryan.
Ryan and his family had considered becoming full-time missionaries with Preparing the Way Ministries in Kenya, Africa, but when Ryan’s wife, Caitlyn, was not completely comfortable with moving abroad, it was time to rethink the situation. “We stepped back See Ryan Forbes pg 8 See Taste of New Holland pg 2

Gina and Mitch Dissinger, owners of Lickity Split, decided to add a cool competition to this year’s Taste of New Holland by holding a Banana Split Eating Contest for all ages. The competition will take place on April 26 at 3 p.m. The first to finish his or her banana split will win a prize, which will be announced closer to the event. There is a fee to register for what Gina called “a fun and delicious challenge.” The number of participants will be limited. Individuals who wish to take part may register at the Lickity Split ice cream truck prior to the competition.
4 p.m., the Kid Zone will open. According to GSFR Captain Wes Kopp, most Zone activities will be fire-prevention related. The smoke trailer and fire house will be on-site. Fire trucks will be on display, and engine rides will be available by donation. Smokey Bear will visit the Kid Zone, as will the ELANCO Library Book Bike, and free books will be given away. “We will have face painting,” noted Gina. Landis added that princess characters will also visit courtesy of Crowns and Corsets. Slushies and cotton candy will be available by donation.
Live music for the event will be provided by Dynamite Dave and the Ignitors.

Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland, will hold a Polka Mass featuring the Heidelberg Brass Band on Sunday, April 27, at 10:30 a.m.
The event made its debut in May 2015 at Trinity in celebration of the 25th ordination anniversary of pastor Glenn Beard Jr., manager of the band. Now, 10 years later, the band has celebrated this Mass more than 100 times in congregations throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland. It has even celebrated a Polka Mass wedding liturgy and a Polka Mass memorial service.
The Heidelberg Brass Band, formed in 1954, included Beard’s father, Glenn Sr., and two uncles, Jim and Bob. Glenn Sr. has been the band’s drummer
for 70 years and is the only original member of the band who is still playing. Since the time that he was a student at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Glenn Jr. had the desire to have a liturgical service consisting of original lyrics set to popular polkas and waltzes that the band plays. Help and inspiration were sought from the Rev. Frank Perkovich from Minnesota, pastor Ed Battiste from Ohio, and pastor Carl Witt from California. With their aid, Glenn Jr.’s wife, Lisa Beard, and C. Jay Hertzog, a former member of the band, put together the Polka Mass. Lisa wrote original lyrics for six pieces of music within the liturgy, and Glenn Jr. wrote words for five hymns.

ASPIE, a nonprofit dedicated to creating supplemental income for adult artisans with disabilities, will hold its annual spring gallery show on Saturday, April 19, at a new venue: the Booth Ferris Room at the Steinman College Center on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. Steinman College Center is located off College Avenue. The show will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The event is made possible by cooperative work between ASPIE and the college’s Best Buddies chapter. Best Buddies is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
As ASPIE enters its second decade of operation in 2025, its member artisans generate income through donations for their original artwork via the online ASPIE Gallery at www.aspieartists.com and the more recently opened in-person gallery at 1905 Barton Drive, Lancaster. Donors make it possible for artists with disabilities to show their work and grow more independent.
Artists who will be highlighted in the April 19 show include Jesse Buckwalter, a photographer from Lancaster; Jonathan Whitlock, a painter from Lancaster; Dorrin Gingrich, a painter from Macon, Ga.; JP Henry, a photographer from Earleville, Md.; Kate Man-
ners, a pour painter from Lancaster; Steven Georges, a metal artist from Mount Joy; and Malcolm Corley, a painter from Lancaster.
Several of these artists will attend a portion of the gallery show. In addition, a musical presentation by the Harmonic Crooners will occur from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The Harmonic Crooners is an ensemble from the Adult Enrichment chorus led by Annette Whitlock, an ASPIE board member. Adult Enrichment is a day program for adults with disabilities operated by United Disabilities Services.

from that commitment,” said Ryan, who was coached during the decision-making process by his 10-member mission support team at Petra Church. “I had breakfast with (Petra equipping pastor) Brian Flewelling,” recalled Ryan. “He was processing with me, and he said, ‘I understand you’re not going with your family, but that doesn’t mean that’s the end of it,’” stated Ryan. Flewelling said, “You have a call on your life.”
After much thought and prayer, a new plan was developed. “Instead of the whole family hopping on a plane,” Ryan said, “maybe it’s me stretching my legs and doing three or four international trips a year and working with other ministries to share my story and preach the Gospel.” Ryan’s team coached him into looking to create a support base of people who want to partner with him to enable him to share his testimony and expertise. “The hope is in a few years to grow a big-enough support base to do that full time, whether that’s (in the U.S.) or internationally,” said Ryan.
Ryan holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology with an addictions and recovery specialization as well as a degree in religion from Liberty University. He has worked with several local ministries, including The Potter’s House and CrossNet Ministries. Ryan was in prison ministries for several years, and he also wrote a book, “Unchained,” with police officer Wen -
dell Metzler about their unlikely friendship after Metzler arrested Ryan a number of times. After Metzler died of cancer in 2021, Ryan took a respite from sharing his testimony, but now he has two upcoming mission trips planned. During the summer, he will fly to Kenya for a two-week leaders conference with Preparing the Way Ministries. “I have been going to that annually,” noted Ryan, who is especially excited about the second event - a leaders conference in Peru in the fall. “It will be (held) in two different cities, so we will be running it twice,” pointed out Ryan. “They requested my story specifically because of the addictions focus.”
Ryan reported that the addictions problem in this area of Peru is such that a speaker with his qualifications and experience was sought. “My degree is in that. My life experience is in that,” said Ryan. Now, Ryan is looking to partner with those who have a heart for his ministry. “I want to get the message out,” said Ryan. “It’s always boiling inside me, and I think I’m ready to share the ongoing testimony of Christ’s life in us.”
Readers who would like to learn more about Ryan’s ministry may call 717-9178496 or email office.rf ministries@gmail.com.

Fifty-three local law enforcement agencies in Lancaster, Adams, Perry, and York counties are joining Pennsylvania State Police and approximately 300 municipal agencies statewide to conduct a targeted aggressive-driving enforcement wave that began March 17 and will run through Sunday, April 27.
The goal of targeted enforcement is to reduce the number of aggressive driving-related crashes, injuries, and deaths on roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement wave will focus on distracted driving, speeding, and work zone awareness. Motorists
exhibiting other unsafe behaviors, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other aggressive actions, will also be cited.
The enforcement is part of Pennsylvania’s Highway Safety Program and is
funded by part of PennDOT’s investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). For more information on aggressive driving, visit www.penndot.pa.gov/ safety.
