On Dec. 4, a gathering of about 50, including Cocalico High School (CHS) students, teachers, and administrators, and representatives of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike), gathered at the Bowmansville Service Plaza to celebrate the installation of a new mural. The mural was created by CHS students based on a partnership between PCA, PA Turnpike, and the South Central PaARTners at Millersville University. The mural is a project of Art Sparks, which provides an artist to complete a 20-day residency with students who collaborate on creating a piece of artwork for a nearby service plaza.

students to brainstorm, develop, draw, and ultimately install the screen-printed mural in the travel plaza. Miller worked with a dozen students under the instruction of Sandra McCarthy, CHS art
department chair, and Caleb Smith, CHS art teacher.

Mention holding a yard sale to most 11-year-old boys, and it is likely the response will be a typical preteen eyeroll. That is not the case with New Holland Elementary School sixth-grade student Jake Delvisco. In early November, when Jake learned that his friend Chad Heagey was burned in an accident, he encouraged his mom, April, to donate to the GoFundMe page that had been set up to help cover medical expenses. But even after April donated, Jake still felt called to do more.

including a pretzel, a covered bridge, the Fulton Theatre, and the familiar green dragon that is symbolic of the Ephrata farmers market. According to Julie Pyle Childs, interim program manager
with the South Central PaARTners, Miller and the students collaborated to design the mural. “(Miller asked students), ‘What is it about your area that you love so much?’” she explained.

Local woman is on the move for missions

When Theresa Newell of New Holland returned home from a trip to Hilton Head, S.C., in August, she was hoping to spend a day catching up - unpacking and reading her mail. But God had other plans for the busy grandmother.
In Newell’s email was an invitation to Lausanne 4, which was to be held in Seoul, South Korea, from Sept. 22 to 28. Newell was at the original Lausanne meeting in Switzerland in 1974. “Billy
Graham and John Stott put a blanket call to Christian leaders,” recalled Newell. “The motto is ‘The Whole Church taking the Whole Gospel to the Whole World.’” The Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism, with which Newell is connected, was one of the first networks to form following the initial event.
Newell reported that “Let the Church declare and display Christ together” was the title of Lausanne 4. The seven-day event attracted about 5,000 invited church leaders. “We were in this

Lantern Tours, history classes planned
Historic Ephrata Cloister will host its annual Lantern Tours from Friday, Dec. 27, through Monday, Dec. 30. Tours, led by the Cloister’s Student Historians, will run every half hour beginning at 6 p.m.; the last tour will begin at 8 p.m. Each tour will last approximately one hour and is limited to 30 participants.
Benefactor-level members are entitled to free tickets. To reserve discounted or complimentary tickets, call the aforementioned number or email ephrata cloister@gmail.com.
The immersive, theatrical tours will offer a glimpse into the challenges and intrigues faced by the Ephrata Cloister community. This year’s performance, ”Conscience and Truth: Conrad Weiser’s Ephrata of 1744,” invites guests to step into a pivotal moment in the Cloister’s history. A performer portraying Pennsylvania Gov. George Thomas will investigate Conrad Weiser’s transformative experiences at Ephrata and the reasons behind his eventual departure in 1743. Guests will encounter community members and unravel the threads of Weiser’s complex relationship with the Cloister.
Attendees are asked to arrive five to 10 minutes before their scheduled tour time. Tours will take place inside and outside, and participants should dress appropriately for the weather. Some paths may be dimly lit, and visitors are welcome to bring a small flashlight.
In addition, Historic Ephrata Cloister will offer its Winter History Class from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays from Jan. 9 to Feb. 27, 2025. The course will feature 16 experts speaking on a range of historical topics.
There is a fee, with a discount for members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates. Advance registration is required by visiting https://ephratacloister .org/events/winter-hist ory-class-2025/, stopping by the Visitor Center during operating hours, or calling 717-733-6600. For added flexibility, single-day attendance is available for those unable to commit to the full course; call the aforementioned number to make arrangements.
For more information and the full course schedule, visit the aforementioned website.
Tailored for adult learners, the program will explore Ephrata Cloister’s history as well as local and regional 18th- and 19th-century cultural and social history. Each session will include two presentations, one at 9 a.m. and one at 10:45 a.m. This year’s course will be offered in a hybrid format, allowing participants to join in person or virtually through Zoom.
Space is limited. Tickets must be purchased in advance; no tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are available by calling 717-733-6600 or visiting https://tinyurl.com/ CloisterLanternTours24. Tickets are nonrefundable unless the Ephrata Cloister cancels the event.
Children age 5 and under will receive free admission. Discounts are available to seniors age 65 and up, students ages 6 to 17, and members of Ephrata Cloister Associates. Patron, Business Member, and
The program opened with CHS music teacher Kristin Diehl leading the school choir in two songs.
Mark Compton, CEO, PA Turnpike Commission, spoke first, explaining why Art Sparks murals have been installed in 17 plazas across the state. “We’ve got 250,000 visitors that come through this location every year,” explained Compton. “That’s 500,000 eyes that will view this art, which will show them what is on the other side of the fence behind us - the great things we have to showcase. What better way to do that than through the eyes of our students?”
Compton introduced Susan S. Cohen, council chair of PCA, who said that the partnership began in 2017 with the goal of
enhancing the visitor experience along the turnpike.
Cohen pointed out that the CHS students incorporated history, industry, and wildlife from the Southeastern region and that the students had created something that they can show their family, friends, and, eventually, their children.
CHS principal Scott Bennetch also spoke, noting that he had seen an Art Sparks installation at a service plaza prior to receiving an email on June 20 asking for CHS students to take part in creating one.
“I knew this was an opportunity to take advantage of, and I could not be prouder of the teamwork that went into creating this amazing wall panel.” Bennetch noted that the project introduced students to a creative pro-
cess that took them from brainstorming to finalizing a plan to creating artwork, which taught lessons in communication, compromise, and problem solving.
Miller spoke detailing the importance of teaching students collaboration and how to blend their individual voices into a unified concept that is pleasing to the public. When Smith spoke, he named the dozen students who completed the project.
One of those students, junior Michael Zepp, discussed how the opportunity to work on the mural affected his outlook. “A travel plaza is a place of community and culture,” he explained. “To others, our land is foreign.” Zepp went on to detail how the panels of the mural tell the story of rural Lancaster County.
He noted how the students brought together concept sketches and photographs. “We are one of three U.S. states with a notable Amish population,” he said, adding that what is commonplace to area residents may spark curiosity in visitors to the state. “(This project) taught us valuable information about our state … and gave us the opportunity to see a whole new side of the art field through murals,” he said.

To help families in need enjoy a holiday meal, the Giant Company is focusing its giving efforts this season on hunger relief efforts, recently announcing donations of $160,000 and 3,000 hams to organizations addressing food insecurity in their local communities.
The Giant Company donated $100,000 to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank on Dec. 3, Giving Tuesday, in support of its hunger relief efforts. The gift will help the food bank provide 400,000 fresh, healthy, nutritious meals to neighbors experiencing hunger in its 27-county service region in Pennsylvania. The food bank is now providing food assistance to more than 250,000 individuals each month. This includes individuals; families; active-duty service members and veterans via its MilitaryShare program; seniors via its ElderShare program; and youths via its in-school, after-school and summer programs.
Additionally, the Giant Company is supporting the Salvation Army’s holiday hunger relief programs by donating $5,000 to 12 Sal-
vation Army locations for a total donation of $60,000. Recipient Salvation Army locations in Pennsylvania include Boyertown, Carlisle, Chambersburg, East Stroudsburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, Levittown, Norristown, Philadelphia and Sunbury, as well as the Winchester, Va., location.
Lastly, to ensure families have a holiday staple at their table, the Giant Company is contributing 3,000 hams to 15 food banks and pantries across its operating area this month. Local recipients are Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Harrisburg; Chester County Food Bank, Exton; Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank, Reading; and Lancaster County Food Hub, Lancaster.
Customers can also join the Giant Company to make a difference this holiday season. Through Tuesday, Dec. 24, customers at any Giant, Martin’s or Giant Heirloom Market store can donate free ham certificates at the register in-store to a local food bank. In addition, customers can purchase reusable bags to benefit regional food banks.

huge auditorium divided into table groups of six,” said Newell, who noted that worship was held both morning and evening.
“There was Bible teaching from the Book of Acts and then a plenary morning teacher,” said Newell, who added that she can rewatch sessions, such as a day devoted to “the persecuted church,” featuring speakers who had been confined in Iran. “(One speaker) had been in solitary (confinement) for a year, and he was rejoicing about the people coming to faith in Jesus in Iran,” said Newell.
Afternoon sessions included a variety of topics for participants to attend. “I picked secularization because I feel that’s very important in America,” recalled Newell, who heard David Brown of England report on the secularization of Europe.
Newell’s photos from the event are filled with individuals who make up a “who’s who” of international evangelism. Newell had her photo taken with Susan Perlman, the assistant director of Jews for Jesus, well-known Christian author and pastor Rick Warren, and a pastor from one of Tim Keller’s churches in Manhattan, among others.
Newell’s next stop was Uzbekistan in Central Asia. “I was on the Old Silk Road,” said Newell of the trade route that originally led from China to the Mediterranean Sea. “I was invited by a YWAM couple from Petra Church who have been in Central Asia for many years,” Newell explained, noting she traveled from Seoul to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and that she visited Samarkand and Bukhara, as well. “I am doing research on the history of the Jews in Central Asia, so I went to many synagogues,” she said, adding that she has been connected to CMJ USA, a ministry among Jewish people. Newell opened the first CMJ office in the U.S. in 1980. During her visit, Newell stopped in major cities along the Old Silk Road while completing her research. Newell has written booklets on a variety of topics, including “The Rev. Dr. Jakob Jocz, CMJ Evangelist and
Theologian;” “Bonhoeffer and the Jews;” and “Jesus Masked: Anti-Jewish Theologies,” which explores why the Jewish heritage of Jesus has been excluded from the understanding of Christ as Savior.
Newell did a little sightseeing on her journey as well, having a photo taken at the borders of North and South Korea with one
foot in each country. She also took lots of photos on the Old Silk Road.
“These are silk cocoons,” she said as she displayed her photos. “There was silk everywhere.”
More information on CMJ USA may be found at www.cmj-usa.org. Information on the Lausanne movement is available at https://lausanne.org/l4.

What happens when a bunch of motorcycle riders come together? A giant convoy traveling through a 25-mile route and raising money for veterans at the same time.
The 16th annual New Year’s Day ride will take
place on Wednesday, Jan. 1, with registration beginning at 10 a.m. at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. The ride will leave from the Legion at 1 p.m., and participants will follow a route along the Susquehanna River, ending at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St.
Members of the ladies’ auxiliary will serve breakfast at the Mount Joy Legion before the ride, and a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served at the Elizabethtown Legion at the ride’s conclusion.
Tyler Stumpf and his friend Jeff Andrews dreamed up the idea for the benefit ride while hanging out during the Christmas season 16 years ago.
“They started talking about how nobody does a ride in January, and they were like, ‘Let’s do one!’” said Mike Hehnly, who is stepping up to coordinate the event for the first time this year. “They thought, instead of making a New Year’s resolution they’re never going to keep, they wanted to get people together for a ride and raise some money for veterans at the same time.”
Money will be raised through the entry fee as well as sales of tickets for giveaway items donated to the cause. All proceeds will benefit the Lebanon VA Medical Center.
“Last year, we raised $36,000,” Hehnly shared. “All of the money we raise goes directly to the vets, to help with their needs. Over the years, we have raised more than $300,000.”
Although the event raises money for a serious cause, it’s filled with light-hearted moments and fellowship. Each year, a participant

Although the event began as a motorcycle ride, it’s open to any type of vehicle, and people do not need to have a connection to the Legion to participate.
“We’d love for anyone who is interested to come out and join us,” Hehnly said. “We usually have more than 450 people registered for this. It’s a great way to meet and share fellowship with other riders in the community.”
And for non-riders, the event has become a fun tradition as well.
“We have people stand out in their yards along the route, holding signs cheering us on,” Hehnly commented. “It’s fun to see people along the route.”
Local businesses help to make the event possible as well, from Hummer’s Meats, which donates the post-ride meal, to Love’s Tree Service & Systems, which provides a video overview of the riders from a crane as they pass by.
For more information on the ride, visit https://bit .ly/3D3WAZb or call 717629-7754. Photos of items available to win will be posted regularly on the site up until the event. Preregistration is encouraged for the ride, but same-day signups will also be available.
Chad’s injuries were extensive. He suffered second- and third-degree burns, and he was initially in critical condition. Chad was airlifted from Lancaster General Hospital to the Burn Center at Lehigh Valley Hospital.
“I am his friend,” said Jake. “I felt like I should step it up.” April noted that Jake and Chad are in the same grade and that they sat together on the afternoon bus each school day.
“I got the idea of a yard sale,” said Jake, who chose Nov. 16 to hold the event at the family’s home in The Willows in New Holland. Jake started collecting items beginning with his own room, and soon family, extended family, friends, and other members of the community were chipping in.
April shared the date, time, and background information about the fundraising effort on her own Facebook page along with local yard sale pages, and area residents responded. “When we posted, nice people in the community donated items,” shared April. “It was wonderful.” April added that many people stopped by the house to say that although they could not come to the yard sale, they wanted to donate money and items.
“The community was very moved by what (Jake) wanted to do for his friend,” she pointed out.
Jake asked his brother, Jaxon, and cousin Londyn Hummer to help man the yard sale, and the event opened at 7 a.m. Jake said that his first customers
arrived around 7:15 a.m., and that the yard sale continued until 1:30 p.m. Jake noted that many customers gave him more money than was asked for the items they purchased.
“We were blessed by the community,” said April, who noted that many of those who could not be present donated electronically. In the end, Jake was able to raise more than $1,400 to help cover Chad’s medical expenses.
Perhaps the best news is that Chad is responding well to his treatment.
“Chad has a long road ahead, but his skin grafts have taken 100%, and there is no longer a fear of rejection,” reported April, who referenced www.gofundme .com/f/support-chads-heal ing-journey for information. “(Chad) was able to come home for Thanksgiving,” she added. Jake noted that he is looking forward to being able to visit Chad in the future.
Jake’s efforts to help his friend did not surprise his mom. “My kids have been raised on acts of kindness,” she said, noting that the family has purchased ice cream for others and provided dinners to veterans.
After April’s mother succumbed to leukemia, the family held a yard sale to help fight that disease.
Jake’s reasoning for helping echoed the Golden Rule, which reads, “Do unto others as you would have done to you.” “If this happened to me,” he stated, “I would want other people to do stuff to raise money for me.”
