The Best Of
Lancaster County – In A Box By Francine Fulton
Individuals and business owners can have their holiday shopping done for them, thanks to LancGoods and Lancaster Local Provisions (LLP), two local companies that are supporting area shop owners by offering boxes filled with gifts that showcase all that Lancaster County has to offer. Out of the coronavirus pandemic, many great ideas have come to life, including one generated by Lyndell Sahd, founder of LancGoods, which offers gift boxes that feature products from local businesses such as coffee, honey, candy, candles and handmade soaps and lotions. Sahd, who grew up in Lititz, began the effort in June, when many local residents were hesitant to leave their homes for shopping, especially gift-buying. “I always shopped locally and during the pandemic I thought, ‘What can I do to help small businesses?’” Sahd recalled. “I put together a Father’s Day box and with products from a few local businesses, and I sold all of them on Instagram.” Next, Sahd assembled a brunch edition box that included locally made honey, granola, coffee and other items. “I made 50, and that

sold out, too,” she reported. “I also (created) a Sunshine edition, which is just an all-purpose box – seeing something to make you smile. It’s at a little lower price point.” For Christmas, there are five different versions of boxes available from LancGoods, including one for children that comes in a paint can. There are also $25 boxes designed for women and for men, a $50 classic box and a $100 deluxe edition. “The men’s edition includes hot sauce from Mount Joy, a beef stick from a farm in Elizabethtown and a pack of coffee,” Sahd noted. “The women’s box includes a chocolate sugar scrub.” Each box contains information townlively.com
about the businesses that provided the products. “I contact the small businesses and ask them to be a part of this. After we agree, every edition comes with a card inside so people can find the items if they want to buy more of them,” Sahd explained. “(The card) tells about the business and gives their website.” She noted that that the entire contents of the boxes are not always revealed to add an element of surprise. “You may not love everything in the boxes, but everybody finds one or two products that are their absolute favorites,” said Sahd. She pointed out that an added benefit of her new business is meet-
ing local shop owners. “There is a coffee roaster in Hempfield, where I live. I contacted them and drank some coffee with them,” she shared. “The relationships that I am building is the favorite part of my whole journey – getting to know these small business owners.” All editions of the boxes are available for pickup locally or for delivery for an additional fee. Preorders for Christmas boxes are currently being accepted. Complete details can be found by visiting https://lancgoods.com and www.facebook.com/LancGoods or emailing lancgoodscontact@gmail. com. “I love when people receive a box continued on page 6 GiftLocal 2020

and find something they love,” Sahd added. “It makes me happy and them happy. It’s a win-win.” Chef Diana of Lancaster Local Provisions also offers several holiday gift boxes filled with local treats handcrafted in Lancaster County. These local and artisanal gift boxes will help organizations with their holiday gift-giving needs and are perfect for both clients and employees alike. Several themed boxes are available, including Sweet Taste of Lancaster and Savory Taste of Lancaster. The sweet box contains an assortment of Miesse’s chocolates, pumpkin spice brittle from Sweet Legacy Gourmet and French macarons from Rice & Noodles. The savory box includes from Rooster charcuterie Street Butcher, sharp cheddar from Noble Cheese and locally
made pretzels and mustard dip. The Grande Taste Lancaster box includes items from both the Sweet Taste and Savory Taste gift boxes. Chef Diana’s gift boxes are designed to capture the flavors of Lancaster County while supporting the local artisans, makers, farmers and growers who make Lancaster so special. LLP offers free delivery to local businesses on all gift box orders. Extra gift boxes can be ordered for office parties and entertaining at home. In addition to the specially curated gift boxes, LLP is a weekly food delivery service that offers peak-season Lancaster produce, locally sourced meat and dairy products and pantry items. Making Gift Cards More Meaningful
By Wendy Royal
For many of us, teenagers are the most challenging people on our shopping lists. They tend not to give many gift ideas, so I often end up buying them a gift card. Though they like receiving them, I hate giving them. They seem so impersonal, last-minute. It’s not just teenagers who leave us scratching our heads; what do you get for your parents who seem to have everything? A gift card most likely. This holiday season, though, I’ve decided that I can give gift cards and still make them unique to the person receiving them. Supporting local businesses is perhaps more critical than ever this year, as many of them townlively.com
have been hit incredibly hard. Purchasing gift cards from local shops and restaurants is a great way to allow the people on your shopping list to choose their unique gift while helping small businesses to thrive in our communities. What dad wouldn’t like a gift card to a local hardware store? Or, what about buying a restaurant gift card for a young couple with small children, along with a redeemable babysitting offer? My niece loves shopping at a local makers market, so I know where I’m purchasing her gift card. When you shop local, gift card giving is no longer impersonal. n GiftLocal 2020

COMMUNITIES WIN WHEN YOU
SHOP LOCAL T THIS CHRISTMAS he holiday season is an important one for small businesses every year, and it figures to take on heightened importance in 2020. The outbreak of COVID-19 hit small businesses especially hard, with many being forced to close their doors to customers in compliance with state and national regulations.
Estimates regarding the pandemic’s effects on small businesses varied, but many small business owners had to let go of employees as they confronted steep declines in revenue. As small businesses face difficult challenges, it’s no surprise that many consumers want to support locally owned small businesses this holiday season. Such support not only can help small businesses but also can help to revitalize local communities. Some local businesses have been part of our community and our lives for as long as we can remember. J B Hostetter and Sons, Inc. 1225 W. Main St. has been serving Mount Joy and the 10

surrounding area since 1927. Their 64,000 square-foot True Value hardware store employs approximately 65 people. With appliances, tools, hardware, plumbing and electrical supplies, housewares, greenhouse, lawn, and garden equipment, shoppers are sure to find something for everyone on their Christmas list. Also, Hostetter’s offers a True Value paint shop, rentals, and service and parts departments. Regular customers appreciate the variety of products, free delivery, and service after the sale. With 93 years in business, you can count on JB Hostetter’s to be there to provide all the products and services needed for your homes and lawns. For

In addition to clothing and household goods, Mount Joy Gift and Thrift is fully stocked with a variety of gift ideas and Christmas decor. Shopping at Mount Joy Gift and Thrift not only saves you money, but your purchases will help support the worldwide relief efforts of the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). Because of the shop and others like it, MCC can send food, clothing, essential hygiene items, and other assistance to people in need due to war, natural disaster, or famine. townlively.com

The farm has been family-owned and operated since 1760, with the ninth generation currently in a leadership role. Christmas at Frysville Farms is a unique experience that the whole family can enjoy. The poinsettia display is a showcase of holiday floral innovation crafting poinsettias in a wide variety of colors and sizes. The aroma of freshly cut Fraser and Douglas fir fills the air as wreaths greet you at the entrance. You can enjoy one of the area’s finest ornament selections with many theme trees. But possibly the best attraction at Frysville Farms is the holiday garden railroad display. With all that Frysville Farms offers, it is no wonder that Frysville has become a holiday destination. Frysville Farms is located at 300 Frysville Road, Ephrata. Call 717-354-4501 or visit frysvillefarms.com.

More tips on how you can support local business: • Shop online. Big-box retailers have traditionally dominated online shopping. However, many small businesses increased their e-commerce capabilities to generate revenue. Shoppers concerned about shopping in person this holiday season should explore the delivery and curbside pickup options available at locally owned small businesses. Even businesses that have not traditionally been allowed to deliver, such as breweries and wineries, have been able to do so during the outbreak, giving consumers unlimited online shopping options.
• Purchase gift cards. Gift cards take the guesswork out of holiday shopping, and such cards are quickly shipped or even emailed to loved ones. That’s a significant benefit during the 2020 holiday season when delivery times are expected to be lengthy. Gift cards to local businesses simplify holiday shopping, support small businesses, and help shoppers avoid potential delivery delays. • Share your experience. Wordof-mouth is vital to small businesses at any time and can be incredibly valuable as these companies try to overcome the challenges posed by the
BOGO
COVID-19 outbreak. Holiday shoppers can share their experiences with local businesses via social media. Share information about the lengths local small businesses have gone to regarding safety measures, order fulfillment, and delivery and pickup efforts. Such sharing may compel neighbors and friends to follow your lead and provide vital support to local businesses in need this holiday season.
Small businesses are the backbone of many communities, and the holiday season provides an excellent opportunity to support them as they look to recover from a challenging year. ■
