Windborne Presents Virtual Concert
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Anne Marie McAlester became executive director of Hope Within Ministries in October 2019, she started thinking about changing the sign outside the Elizabethtown organization.
“I felt it didn’t communicate everything we are about,” she said. So last fall, she applied for a community awareness grant through Hershey Medical Center and received funding for a new sign.
The sign, at 4748 East Harrisburg Pike, now reads “Hope Within Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center.”
McAlester said the nonprofit provides primary care for uninsured, low-income people in Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. “These are people who work part-time hours without benefits or people who have lost their jobs or are unemployed,” she explained.
Counseling is offered on a sliding-scale payment plan and is open to anyone, with no income qualifications.
All medical services are provided by volunteers, including a volunteer psychiatrist who comes in twice a month.
She added that the organization hopes to expand its dental clinic but is in need of more volunteer dentists.
Over the last year, Hope Within has seen a rising need for its services.
“Across the board, we’ve seen huge increases. We’re seeing people who have lost their jobs, people who are afraid of losing their jobs. We’ve seen a major spike in requests for services. We have people who can no longer afford insulin or asthma medication,” McAlester remarked. “These medications are very expensive.”
The organization typically holds four fundraisers throughout the year, but had to cancel all of them in 2020.
Hope Within is planning a Valentine’s Day fundraiser, she noted, with more information coming soon on the organization’s Facebook page. “We’ll ask people to donate to us, and in return, we’ll send a personalized card out on their behalf,” McAlester explained.
Along with financial constraints, the organization lost a lot of volunteer office staff and a few doctors, many of whom are elderly and were worried about the risk of continuing to volunteer during a pandemic.
Despite these challenges, McAlester remains hopeful that Hope Within will continue to thrive.
The Susquehanna Folk Music Society will present an online concert featuring the a cappella group Windborne on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. Preceding the concert will be an online community sing from 4 to 5 p.m.
Windborne, a quartet of young singers from New England, reflects the singing traditions of Eastern Europe and North America. Concert programs include songs from Corsica, the Republic of Georgia, Bulgaria, Quebec, and the Basque country, as well as traditional and original American folk music.
The Windborne singers grew up immersed in the traditional song and dance communities of New England and discovered a love of world folk music in their teens. Over the past decade, Windborne has sought out masters of traditional singing styles in the U.S. and around the world to study a variety of vocal music. The group specializes in close harmony singing.
Participants attending the community sing via Zoom will learn a selection of songs from Windborne’s “Song on the Times” songbook. Members of the quartet will discuss each song’s origins and encourage conversation about the content of the song and how it may be meaningful in the current times. With participants muted, singers of all levels can join in from the comfort of their home.
Windborne’s livestreamed concert will incorporate stories and notes about the traditions from which the group’s songs spring.
The community sing is free, and there is a requested donation for the concert. Registration at www.susquehannafolk.org is required to attend.

PARPC Receives Donation
The Palmyra Area Recreation and Parks Commission (PARPC) received a check for $1,000 from Knights of Columbus Council 10502 from the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Palmyra. The funds will help to provide scholarships for economically disadvantaged youths so they can participate in the various recreational programs offered.
As a result of this donation, 30 PARPC scholarships will be granted during 2021. Funds were raised from the Knights of Columbus’ annual golf scramble.
For more information, readers may contact PARPC at 717838-9244.
Windborne will offer a free livestreamed concert on Sunday, Jan. 24.
