Fight CRC estimates that 60 percent of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented with screening. Bryan, who was diagnosed at age 34, has dedicated a year of volunteer time to Fight CRC to raise awareness about the importance of screening using her story in an effort to save lives. Out of five competing youth teams, the Twisted Five team from Dauphin County spun and wove its way to the blue ribbon during the Youth Fleece-to-Shawl Contest at the 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show. The team includes members of the former reigning champion team, Twisted Sisters and a Dude. The former team won the Youth Fleece-to-Shawl competition the past two years. Teams must finish within three hours, but finishing first is not the only deciding factor in the competition. Youth teams are judged on the condition of their fleece, their spinning technique, their weaving quality, and the overall appearance
of their shawl design. The Twisted Five used Shetland sheep fiber from a Leicester longwool sheep. The fiber used in the warp is PA Preferred, Pennsylvania-sourced, and hand-spun. In addition, the team plyed and hand-dyed the warp to represent the shawl’s theme, “Steel Welding.” The warp was dyed with variegated gray and white. The detailed pattern used in the shawl was designed by Madison Shaw, who also received the Best Weaver Award for her exceptional weaving and design skills. It is Shaw’s 10th year participating in the competition.
Lamb and Wool Queen Carrie Rutledge (far left) congratulated the Twisted Five team, consisting of (continuing from left) Isaac Bell, Tabitha May, Brooke Coble, Madison Shaw, and Jacob Bell after the team took first place in the Youth Fleece-to-Shawl competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Team members of the Twisted Five are weaver Madison Shaw of Harrisburg; spinners Brooke Coble, Tabitha May, and Isaac Bell; and carder Jacob Bell. Their shawl was sold at the shawl auction held later in the day. The second-place team was Fiber Frenzy from Dauphin County, with a “Holland” theme, and the third-place team was the Fibering Five from Dauphin County, with an “Ocean” theme. The competition included close calls, such as the Fibering Five finishing with only 15 seconds to spare. Fibering Five also won the Premium Spinning Award. Roaring Rubies from Clinton
County won fourth place. The team had a “Roaring ’20s” theme. Snow White and the Seven Sheep from Clinton County won fifth place, the Best Fleece Award, and the Team Choice Award. The team had a “Snow White and Seven Dwarfs” theme. Judges for the competition were Terry Kunst of Twin Ponds Fiber Farm of Lykens, Cynthia Baker of the Chester County Craft Guild, Rebecca Clark of Everett, and former Fleece-to-Shawl competitor Joan Carpenter. DMVA Offers Assistance To Veterans The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) encourages veterans to review their benefits with a professional to ensure they are receiving the benefits they have earned through their service and sacrifice. All veterans should occasionally check with a veterans service officer to see if changes in a veteran’s circumstances or changes to benefit policies may have modified the programs a veteran may be eligible to receive.
Safeguarding military paperwork, especially the DD-214, which is used to verify military service, is an important first step. The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately when an individual leaves the military. Veterans often find that filing their documents for free at their county courthouse of record is an easy way to secure them until needed, which can often be decades into the future.
Come To Our House Of Worship FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH: 64 W. Chocolate Ave., Hershey PA. Worship on Sundays at 8am (traditional), 9am (contemporary), and 11am (traditional). Education hour at 10am with small groups for adults and traditional Sunday school classes for adults, youth, and children. Visit our website: www.firstumchershey.org or call 717533-9668 to learn more.
Anyone needing assistance locating their military documentation can call 717-861-8910 or email RA-REQ@pa.gov. Another key step is for veterans to apply for federal health care and state benefits by visiting their local county director of veterans affairs or area accredited service organizations to take a look at what benefits they may be eligible for and to get help applying for those benefits. A complete list of county directors and their contact information can be found at www.dmva.pa.gov. In addition to connecting with a county director or an accredited service organization, veterans should sign up for the DMVA
Veterans Registry, a free tool that electronically delivers timely information about the many state benefits, programs and services available to veterans. Veterans, family members and people who work with veterans can sign up at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. Veterans and their dependents should never pay for help to apply for veterans’ benefits. There are about 200 veterans service officers in Pennsylvania who work with organizations such as the DMVA, county Veterans Affairs offices and several veterans service organizations. They are experienced, trained professionals who provide veterans with advice and assistance at no cost.

On Jan. 10, the fourth annual Army and Navy culinary competition at the 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show anchored Military, Veterans and Their Families Day, a full day of events honoring veterans for their service. The day also included demonstrations. In the culinary competition, the Army team was declared the winner. Army Sgt. Curtis A. Campbell, Culinary Specialist at the Army Executive Dining Facility, enlisted the aid of television news reporters Shannon Murphy and Corinne Lillis. The Army team was pitted against U.S. Navy Chief Culinary Specialist (Surface Warfare/Aviation Warfare) Chief Frederic M. Gilmore and his teammates, television news reporters Ali Lanyon and James Crummel, in an “Iron Chef”-style cook-off. Teams were given a bag of mystery ingredients and 30 minutes to prepare and plate dishes using PA Preferred, Pennsylvania-grown, locally sourced items. Air Force veteran Troy Jochem of Hope Hill Lavender Farm and Marine veteran John Plasterer from Shad Stone Farm, both Homegrown By Heroes members, judged the event. They were joined by Barry Crumlich, executive chef at the Pennsylvania governor’s residence; John Moeller, owner and executive chef at Greenfield Restaurant and Bar in Lancaster and author of “Dining at the White House - From the President’s Table to Yours”; and Comcast’s Keystone Region senior director of customer care, Greg Magee.
