SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Matincheck’s “Rosie” Featured On Magazine painting by Middletown Area High School (MAHS) sophomore Jessica Matincheck recently garnered attention both locally and in State College. Jess created the artwork, “My Version of a Modern-Day Rosie the Riveter,” as a class assignment during the height of the coronavirus shutdown in the spring of 2020. At that time, MAHS students were learning from home. High school art teacher Elizabeth Strite challenged her students to use the pandemic as inspiration for a specific art project. Students were instructed to create a social commentary piece with a strong visual statement about an aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Jess chose to honor health care workers with her version of the famous “Rosie the Riveter” painting. “I wanted to paint a prominent female figure because nurses were high risk and they are literally on the frontline and I wanted to incorporate both in one piece,” she said. Jess’ version of Rosie is Mexican with black hair, dark eyes and brown skin. In the acrylic painting, Rosie is wearing a mask and gloves, and she sports a stethoscope. She communicates the strength and courage of health care workers during the pandemic. “I chose to make her Mexican because my grandmother is of Mexican descent on her father’s side. I also made her a nurse because of their importance during this struggling time,” Jess said. “I sketched her out in about 25 to 30 minutes and painted her within two days.” The finished painting was added to Jess’ home art display, but its journey was just beginning. As an employee of Penn State Health, Jess’ mother, Lynn Matincheck, submitted the artwork to be considered for Penn State’s “Viral Imaginations: COVID-19 Project.” This online gallery archives “Pennsylvanians’ first-person, imaginative and artistic expressions

Jess Matincheck’s painting “My Version of a Modern-Day Rosie the Riveter” was recently featured on the cover of The State College Magazine, as well as on T-shirts.

The editors of The State College Magazine in State College were developing a story about the healing power of art. In their research, they came across Penn State’s “Viral Imaginations” gallery and Jess’ unique Rosie caught their attention.

“I wanted to paint a prominent female figure because nurses were high risk and they are literally on the frontline and I wanted to incorporate both in one piece.” They contacted Jess about using her artwork for another article they were developing that would archive memories of the pandemic. Not only did they want to use Jess’ art-

work, but also it was selected for the front cover of the magazine. The magazine is available to view at www.statecollegemagazine.com/pdf -archives/. Rosie was not Jess’ first piece of artwork to receive recognition. Jess became interested in art as a student at Reid Elementary, where she was featured as the Artist of the Month on several occasions and won a poster contest in fourth grade. She was recently featured as the artist for the 2020 Middletown Area School District holiday card, and her passion has caught the attention of several local organizations, as well. As seen in her art displayed in her home art studio, Jess specializes in female portraits. “I like the beauty of various skin tones, makeup, jewelry, hair, and fashion,” she commented.

Local Sewists Honored In National Contest Two residents of southcentral Pennsylvania earned awards at the 2021 National Make It With Wool Contest on Feb. 6. Olivia Morrissey of Annville was among the top 10 winners in the Junior division for youths ages 13 to 16, and Julia Schreiner from Penryn was named as third runner-up in the Adult division. Alyssa Neff from Harrisburg also competed in the Senior division for people age 25 and up. There were more than 20 state entries in each division. The top 10 juniors; top 10 seniors, people ages 17 to 24; and top five adults were recognized. Fabrics, sewing books, equipment, and notions were awarded at the state and national levels. Scholarships were also available at the national level. The national contest, previously scheduled to be held in Denver, Colo., was held in a virtual and mail-in format. Contestants shipped their ensembles for judging in January. They also provided a video which showed them modeling their garments, along with still photos of their ensemble. See Sewists pg 4

made in response to their lived experience of the coronavirus pandemic.” Jess’ painting was selected to be included in the online gallery and can be viewed by visiting https://viralimaginations.psu.edu/ visual-art-gallery/ and searching for “My Version of a Modern-Day Rosie the Riveter.” Nurses who work with Jess’ mother said they loved what the painting represented, and they expressed interest in purchasing T-shirts bearing the image. With the help of With Kidz in Mind, Tshirts are now being worn by nurses both locally and outside the area. Jess and her family made no profit on the T-shirts or her art; nurses simply paid for the cost of the shirts. Modern-Day Rosie had made it into a gallery and onto a T-shirt, but she was not finished yet.

Do you feel like your life is on hold because of everyday aches and pains? Do you have trouble walking, doing stairs or standing for long periods? Do you feel like you need to take a rest when you’re trying to keep up with your family (kids and grandkids)…or even keep up with your dog? Have you been told that your stiff, swollen, achy joints are “bone-on-bone” and there’s nothing you can do about it? Are you looking to stay active? Feel normal again? Feel younger and stronger naturally without medications, injections or surgery? If you are looking to feel younger and feel stronger naturally, then going to the Arthritis Workshop may be one of the best decisions you make. Arthritis can cause you to feel pain, stiffness, and achy…making it difficult to move… even with everyday activities. Arthritis can stop you from feeling normal. • It can force you to take pain medications, Ibuprofen, or even get cortisone injections (which are known to cause other health problems). • Everyday activities like walking, driving, doing stairs, housework or even sleeping can feel difficult to impossible to perform. (Especially in the morning when you first get out of bed). • You can feel irritated, upset or uncomfortable trying to keep up with your family or friends. • You might feel like you’re neglecting your yard, house or garden… • Arthritis can distract you from focusing on what you’re doing (forgetting why you went to the store…or what you were going to do). • And it can take away from your ability to live a normal life…feeling like you have to depend on other people…or having them wait on you while you “just sit for a minute.” Less movement and less living can lead to depression, stress and a life of sitting. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy, we’ve helped thousands of arthritis sufferers from right here in Harrisburg…and the rest of Central PA…who have suffered needlessly with arthritis…it’s our specialty. Most were experiencing pain, aching or stiffness in their back, neck, hips, knees and shoulders…and were looking for natural treatments… By request to help arthritis sufferers, I’m hosting an Arthritis Workshop right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Lower Paxton on Wednesday, March 17th, at 7:00 p.m. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake arthritis sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 2 Most Common Types of Arthritis… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • Why your joints feel stiff in the morning…and what you can do about it. • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Claim My Seat for the Arthritis Workshop? Call 717-210-9945 to Register for the Arthritis Workshop and Claim Your Seat. When you register, we will mail you The Arthritis Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. Because of limited space, we only have 10 seats available for the event…and this announcement will be going out to over 9,000 people who’ve been treated at Madden PT PLUS sent to an audience of 41,000 people on Facebook. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call 717-210-9945. Ask for Itzel. How Much Is It to Attend the Arthritis Workshop? The event is FREE. No cost to you… ***PLUS as a Special Bonus, all attendees of the Arthritis Workshop will receive a Special Report: “The 7 Secrets to Permanent Relief for Arthritis.” Looking forward to seeing you there, Chad Madden, Physical Therapist – Paid Advertisement –

Judging was based on poise, construction of the garments, fit and wearability, and promotion of the versatility of wool. The objectives of the contest are to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns; to encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting, and crocheting with wool fabrics and yarns; to recognize creative skills; and to develop life skills, including being responsible for one’s self, being a good sport, accepting judges’ decisions, and learning about and appreciating diversity. Each entrant constructed at least one wool or wool-blend garment using knitting, crocheting, and/or sewing skills. Olivia completed a twopiece ensemble for her first sewing project with wool. The testing program also has support from the Penn State Master Well Owner Network.

Each water supply will receive testing through a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection state-accredited water testing laboratory for coliform bacteria, E. coli bacteria, nitrate, manganese, arsenic, lead and copper. Registration will be limited to approximately 33 households. Each household must own or rent a primary residence in Dauphin County that uses a private well, spring or cistern for a drinking water supply. The program is not for water supplies at camps.

In past years, the club’s source of funds has been the annual auction and fundraiser. Last year’s event, scheduled for April 18, 2020, had to be canceled due to COVID-19. However, with the support of sponsors that allowed the club to retain their sponsorship funds, including The Hershey Company, The Milton Hershey School, Country Meadows Associates, and Bryn Mawr Trust Company, these awards are possible. Organizations that were awarded funds are New Birth of Freedom Council Boy Scouts of America, Cocoa Packs Inc., Derry Township Community Cats, Hershey Area Playhouse, Hershey Community Archives, Hershey Community Chorus Inc., Hershey Food Bank and Community Outreach, Hershey Public Library, The Hershey Story History Contest for Young Writers, Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards, Hershey Volunteer Fire Company, Liter-

acy Council of LancasterLebanon, Love INC of Greater Hershey, Middletown Public Library, Mohler Senior Center, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania, William S. Bowman Trust, Hershey Symphony Orchestra, Hope Springs Farm, Joy of Sports Foundation, Hershey Gardens, Living Well Institute, and Hope Within Community Health, Counseling, and Dental Care. Additionally, the Hershey Rotary Club, along with other Rotary chapters, recently raised a total of $83,075 to support a humanitarian project called “Healthy Families” in Quito, Ecuador. The initiative was led by the local Ecuadorian Rotary Club, Occidente Quito. With this global support, the Quito Rotary Club educated more than 70 families, covering topics in basic nutrition, clean water and lifestyle adaptations. In addition to its support of many local nonprofit organizations in the Derry Township area, the Hershey Rotary Club partners with Rotary International and other Rotary clubs to make a difference worldwide.

Couple To Support K9 Veterans Tyler and Georgie Harner, a husband-and-wife team from Hershey, will participate in the David Goggins 4x4x48 Challenge from Friday to Sunday, March 5 to 7. This exercise challenge encourages participants to run 4 miles every four hours for 48 hours. As part of their participation, the Harners will support Paws of Honor by raising funds and awareness for K9 veterans. They will also incorporate their children, Mason, 7, and Cole, 4, into some of the event’s activities. The Harners said they chose to aid Paws of Honor due to their love of dogs and their appreciation for veterans, both human and canine. Georgie and Tyler have described their family as a “dog family,” and they consider their canine pets to be members of their family. Additionally, National K9 Veterans Day will occur on Saturday, March 13. This annual tribute honors and remembers the service and sacrifices of America’s mili-

tary working dogs, as well as the numerous canines that serve with law enforcement, border patrol and other agencies. The Harners also appreciate human veterans, as most of Georgie’s and Tyler’s grandfathers were World War II veterans. In connection with the fundraiser, Paws of Honor recently recognized first responders and teachers for their ongoing service during the pandemic. Georgie is a substitute school teacher and stay-at-home mom who previously taught for approximately 10 years at Harrisburg and Central Dauphin school districts. Tyler is a career firefighter working in Frederick, Md. To donate to Paws of Honor in connec-

tion with the David Goggins 4x4x48 Challenge, readers may visit www.pawsof honor.org/k9-veterans-day -2021/. More information about the exercise challenge is available at www.goggins challenge.com, and details about Paws of Honor are available on the organization’s social media pages.

Georgie and Tyler Harner of Hershey will seek to raise funds and awareness for Paws of Honor during the David Goggins 4x4x48 Challenge from Friday to Sunday, March 5 to 7.
