Lebanon DAR Presents Awards On March 21, the Lebanon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) met at Zion Lutheran Church in Lebanon to honor local students at its annual awards celebration. Fol-

lowing a reception for the awardees, the chapter’s business meeting was conducted by regent Nancy Behney. Students in fifth, sixth, and seventh grades at local schools participated in the annual DAR American History Essay Contest earlier in the school year. At the recent meeting, Annville Elementary student Mary Haley

read her winning essay, which was based on the National DAR topic of “Women of World War I.” DAR member Sybil Stambaugh presented Mary with a monetary prize and an official DAR American History Essay pin and certificate. Mary is the daughter of Patrick and Theresa Haley. DAR member Patricia Bender introduced the DAR Good Citizenship recipients to the audience. This year’s recipients include Samantha Sperlich of Annville-Cleona High

Lebanon DAR members Bonnie Loy (left) and Stephanie Zimmerer (right) congratulated DAR American History Essay winner Mary Haley at the Lebanon DAR Award Night.

School, Alexis Steele of Cedar Crest High School, Dana Lovell of Eastern Lebanon County High School, Rachel McCarthy of Lebanon Catholic School, Alyssa Allwein of Lebanon High School, Evelyn Dyer of Northern Lebanon High School, and Camdin Carpenter of Palmyra Area High School. These seniors were selected by their high schools earlier in the year based on how they have incorporated the four qualities of a DAR Good Citizen - dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism - into their lives. Each student spoke of his or her current involvement in school, church, and community, as well as future plans. They received a monetary prize and an official DAR Good Citizenship pin and certificate. Additionally, the tombstone of patriot Jacob Light will be rededicated by the Lebanon Chapter DAR, along with members of the Sons of the Revolution and members

of the patriot’s 21st-century family. Light, born in 1758 to Martin and Anna Pfeiffer Light and married to Veronica Ellenberger Light, served in the Lancaster militia under Capt. John Stone’s Second Battalion Company during the Revolutionary War. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 7, at approximately 2 p.m. at the Ebenezer Cemetery off of Route 72 in Lebanon. A reception will follow at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. All are welcome to attend. The Lebanon Chapter will welcome three women who found genealogical connections to a patriot of the War of Independence as new members in April. Those who are interested in pursuing a genealogical search to determine if they have a blood relative who was involved in the American Revolution may contact Bonnie Loy at bloydar@comcast.net.
