Servant Stage, a nonprofit theater serving Lancaster County, will produce “Newsies.” The Tony-award winning Disney musical, based on the 1992 motion picture, was inspired by a true story. The show features a score by Alan Menken, dancing, and a focus on the message to fight for what is right. Producers have gathered a cast of more than 40 local performers, working with a 10piece orchestra, in an energetic and family-friendly show that audience members of all ages may enjoy. “Newsies” will play at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Thursdays, June 9 and 16, at 7 p.m.;
Fridays, June 3, 10, and 17, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, June 4, 11, and 18, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, June 5, 12, and 19, at 2 p.m. According to artistic director Wally Calderon, the wellknown musical is one that Servant Stage has wanted to undertake for some time. He said that he is enjoying working with the large ensemble cast as they explore the story of New York City’s newsboys at the turn of the 20th century. The cast will also include Lancaster’s Dan Deal, known for his work at Sight & Sound Theatre. Director Jonathan Bauer reported that teenagers were cast in the roles of the newsies to preserve the

Memorial Day may be the first big event of the season, and chances are that the grill and yard could use some attention. Before the party, hosts should make sure all the grill’s burners are clean and working properly. Clutter should be cleared from the yard, and patio furniture should receive a thorough cleaning. Additional outdoor furniture should be added if more seating is needed. Hosts should keep a spare propane tank on hand to be sure the grill does not run out of fuel. At homes where there is a pet, the yard should be cleared of waste. In addition to cleaning the yard, it is a good idea to stock up on citronella candles or insect repellents. Bugs may want to join the festivities, too. Hosts may consider using their burgers to highlight the patriotic meaning of Memorial Day by showcasing the nation’s colors. A grilled burger patty should be placed on a bun of choice and topped with raw or grilled tomato slices for red, mayonnaise or aioli for white, and blue cheese crumbles for blue. Hosts can carry the color theme over into a side salad as well and top favorite greens with beets, blueberries, and chunks of feta cheese. One of the easiest ways to
serve a group is to put the food out on long tables so that guests can choose what they want. Condiments and beverages should be placed in a separate area to keep the line flowing. Additionally, hosts should make sure that alcoholic beverages are kept separate from
non-alcoholic options so that children do not take the wrong drinks. Coolers placed on opposite sides of the yard can eliminate confusion. By following these tips, hosts can seek to make their Memorial Day barbecue enjoyable for their friends and family.
