Crafts to be featured include painting, pottery, acrylics, wood working, and broom making. Guests can park on public streets or at Fink Elementary School, 150 Race St., at no charge. Free shuttle transportation will be provided by Rohrer Bus Services from Fink to Hoffer Park and back again. The fair’s sponsors are Suez, The Giant Company, Members 1st Federal Credit Union, Renewal By Anderson Central PA, and Rohrer Bus. Fundraiser To Provide COVID Relief In Bolivia A local youth recently undertook a project to aid Bolivian orphans as part of a larger COVID-19 outreach through Friends In Action Intl. (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown. The project began when Lily Medich, 11, of York, learned through FIA’s website about the great need in Bolivia. Northern Bolivia in particular has been significantly affected during the pandemic and continues to be severely underresourced. The town hospital has a maximum capacity of 35 beds and one ventilator, and many people from nearby villages along the Amazon River travel two days to find medical items as simple as acetaminophen. Bolivian doctors have run out of many medications. “I can’t imagine living somewhere where there are no food banks, no shelters, or no clothing banks to help the people. I just knew I had to help in any way I could,” commented Lily. See FIA pg 3

No in-person public meetings will be held, but those wishing to provide feedback may visit www.survey monkey.com/r/CATSEPT7. For more details, contact CAT at info@cattransit.com. Lily Medich displays bags that she hand-painted and planned to sell, with proceeds benefiting Friends In Action Intl.’s relief work in Bolivia.
Lily decided to raise funds to help the Hogar de Andre de Esperanza y Alegria Orphanage. Due to another round of lockdowns, the children had not been able to get new shoes in quite some time, so Lily set a goal to raise $2,000 so each of the close to 100 orphans could receive a new pair of shoes. Working from her interest in art and fashion, Lily decided to hand-paint bayong bags her Thai aunt helped her purchase from a womanowned Thai business. “I was excited that purchasing the purses was also going to bless the artisans who handmade them in Thailand. It’s like a double blessing,” Lily explained. Starting with 16 bags, Lily used acrylic paints to decorate the purses with her own design or with different flower patterns she learned through YouTube tutorials. By producing something both beautiful and useful, she hoped other women and girls would join her fundraising efforts. As of May 3, Lily had raised $1,200 toward the effort by asking family and friends to donate online to FIA’s work in Bolivia.

Community members interested in buying any of the remaining bags may email Lily at ssmedich@ comcast.net. Direct donations to FIA’s ministries in Bolivia can be made at www.fiaintl.org/donate/. Lily hopes to have the full $2,000 raised by early June, so donations are sought in May. FIA provided close to $45,000 in 2020 for COVID relief to the hard-hit town of Guayaramerin, in northern Bolivia. National pastors who partner with FIA have been using contributions to distribute food and medicine to the small villages in Cauchuela Esperanza and Primero de Mayo. A caravan of three pickup trucks and a minivan have delivered enough food for more than 150 sick or grieving families. Waves of relief resources continue to be distributed every two weeks. “(In northern Bolivia), 90% of families (have) at least one person who contracted the virus. The local pastors who partner with us are desperate to offer hope and tangible demonstrations of God’s love to the villagers,” shared Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director.

Following the observance of Donate Life Month in April, the Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation and Health are spreading the message that driver’s license and identification card holders can easily help another person live a fuller, longer life by registering as an organ donor. An organ donor designation can be added by selecting Become an Organ Donor in 30 Seconds at www.dmv.pa.gov. Once the designation is added, individuals will receive a designation card that they must carry with them to affirm organ donor status until they renew or replace their driver’s license or identification card. There is no charge for adding the designation to a driver’s license or identification card.
Driver’s license and identification card holders, as well as registered vehicle owners, can also support organ donation programs by donating a nominal amount to the Robert P. Casey Memorial Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Trust Fund at the time of application and/or renewal. Proceeds from the fund are used to educate and promote awareness of the importance of organ donation through nonprofit organizations like the Center for Organ Recovery and Education and the Gift of Life Donor Program. Pennsylvanians have donated more than $16.8 million over the life of the fund. More information on organ and tissue donation in Pennsylvania can be found at www.donatelifepa.org.

SFMS Plans Concerts, Workshop The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) has planned virtual two concerts and a virtual mandolin workshop. Donations will be accepted for each of the three events. The group Fàrsan - which in Gaelic means to range or ramble - will perform Celtic music from Scotland, Canada, and the U.S. on Saturday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m. Fàrsan’s performances feature fiddle, pipes,
whistles, piano, and accordion united with percussive stepdance and puirt-à-beul (mouth music). The event will begin with a prerecorded concert by the full band, followed by solo mini concerts filmed in each member’s home. A conversation with an SFMS member will round out the evening. On Saturday, June 5, in collaboration with Music at Dickinson, SFMS will pre-
sent Sierra Hull and Justin Moses for a 4 to 5:30 p.m. virtual mandolin workshop followed by a 7:30 p.m. livestreamed concert of bluegrass and Americana music. This is the first headline act to be announced in the Susquehanna Folk Music Society’s schedule of summer events. Both Hull and Moses have received honors from the International Bluegrass Music
May 26, 2021 - 9
Association (IMBA) as well as Grammy nominations. Married in 2017, the two now often perform as a duo. During the workshop, “Mandolin Essentials With Sierra Hull & Justin Moses,” the artists will dive into technique, tone, and tips to play any form of acoustic music. For more details about any of these events, visit www.sfmsfolk.org or call 717745-6577.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) has welcomed Rovenia Roe Braddy as its new vice president of programs. Braddy has close to 30 years of experience working with community youths. Her prior roles include youth educator and curriculum developer and inclusion facilitator for local school districts and charter schools. Braddy has served as a parent advocate for students enrolled in special needs programs, a board member for a local theater company, and a judge for the local ACT-SO program for youths in the arts sponsored by the local NAACP. She also volunteers to read to elementary students as part of the Great African American Read-In sponsored by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
Braddy holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from Edinboro University and a master’s degree in curriculum, design, and instruction from Walden University. She lives in Harrisburg with her husband and has two adult children. She is also a published author of seven books and a playwright of three community theater stage productions.

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will hold its next monthly meeting online via Zoom on Thursday, June 3, at 7 p.m. The Roundtable will welcome Col. Clarence E. “Bud” Anderson, the group’s first speaker who is a World War II veteran. During World War II, Anderson served two combat tours as a fighter pilot escorting heavy bombers over Europe. He was chosen as one of the original flight leaders of the 357th Fighter Group, equipped with the new P-51 Mustang. From November 1943 through January 1945, he flew 116 combat missions and in the
Summer Reading Challenge Set
process became the highest scoring ace in the 363rd Fighter Squadron. He also earned the distinction of triple ace, meaning he shot down a total of at least 15 enemy aircraft during aerial combat. His plane, Old Crow, was never hit by enemy aircraft or forced to turn back for any reason. Anderson was decorated 25 times, was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame and has been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Following World War II, he served in the Air Force as a test pilot. He has written a book about his exploits, “To Fly and Fight,” coauthored by Joseph P. Hamelin. Anderson turned 99 in January and is known as the highest scoring living U.S. fighter ace and the only surviving U.S. triple ace. The Zoom meeting is open to the public, and no registration is required. To attend, visit www.centralpaww2roundtable.org. The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for World War II veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war.
