The Elegance at Hershey, now in its ninth year, will take place from Friday to Sunday, June 7 to 9, in Hershey. The event is a fundraiser for the JDRF, the AACA Library and Research Center and the AACA Museum. Kicking off the weekend, The Grand Ascent will take place on June 7 and Saturday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the hill course behind the Hotel Hershey, 100 Hotel Road, Hershey. Modeled in part on the previous Hershey Hill Climbs and the famed Goodwood Festival of Speed, the event will consist of speed exhibitions featuring mostly pre-war race cars sanctioned by the Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA). Grandstands will be available at the start and near the finish line, along with a trail up the hill where spectators may watch during runs on June 7 and 8. Each day during the midday hours, guests may opt to purchase a VIP ticket that will allow them ride in one of the cars with a professional driver. Vendors and food concessions will be stationed at the Midway along with a vintage race car display, plus additional family-friendly activities. Cars and Coffee will return on June 8 from 8 a.m.
to 1 p.m. There is a fee per car until 9 a.m. No preregistration is required. Attendees are encouraged to bring their cars. The Concours d’Elegance will be available on June 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the gardens of the Hotel Hershey, 100 Hotel Road, Hershey. Modeled after the grandest concours hosted in Europe and America, the garden party is expected to feature more than 70 collector cars. The race cars from The Grand Ascent will be on display as well as automotive art, lifestyle art, and more. There is a per-person cost to attend. Among the vehicles to be displayed are two famous and important concept cars from the collection of General Motors. The vehicles will not be roped off, so visitors will be able to view the cars up close. The 1951 General Motors LeSabre show car was the first concept car produced by the GM Styling Section following World War II. The LeSabre reflects GM Styling vice president Harley Earl’s fascination with the sleek designs found in highperformance aircraft of the day. Lightweight See Elegance At Hershey pg 2

Soroptimist International is a worldwide organization of women dedicated to helping other women. Members provide service and financial support at the local, region, national, and international levels with the goal of advancing human rights and the status of women. Soroptimist International of Harrisburg members have a mission to use their time, talent, and resources to advance the status of women and children. To accomplish this mission, they establish and support specific projects to address needs locally, regionally, and internationally. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes and honors young women ages 14 to 17 who improve the community and the world through volunteer efforts such as fighting drugs, crime, and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty. Volunteer actions that benefit women or girls are of particular interest. Although Hope Springs Farm serves to help both men and women with disabilities in the community, the Soroptimist Club recognized Erdman’s unique volunteer work to improve the farm’s community outreach. Hope Springs Farm is a nonprofit organization with a day program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. The program is located See Volunteer pg 2

“Warehoused” To Be Shown “Warehoused,” a 72-minute documentary that examines the plight of long-term refugees in Kenya’s Dadaab refugee camp, will be shown from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey. This documentary follows several people as they try to carve out an existence in a residence that was designed to be temporary but has become permanent. Following the screening, staff from Church World Services (CWS) Lancaster will share their first-hand experiences living in the Dadaab refugee camp and
take questions from the audience. CWS is a faith-based organization supporting the refugee community with resettlement, employment, and immigration legal services. The program is free of charge, and light refreshments will be served. The event is hosted by the church’s Mission and Peace Committee in recognition of International Refugee Day on Thursday, June 20. Elegance At Hershey from pg 1 materials were used throughout the car, and the 201.87-inchlong vehicle was carried by a supercharged V-8 engine. A unique feature of this car is the two rubberized 20-gallon gas tanks - one to hold gasoline and one to hold methyl-alcohol. The alcohol gave the car additional power after the accelerator pedal was pushed beyond the halfway position. Other features include the wrap-around windshield, electric windows, and a built-in hydraulic system that enabled the car to be lifted when a tire had be changed. The 1959 Cadillac Cyclone also reflects the influence of aircraft design, both in its instruments and in the canopy, which allows both the driver and passenger to have a 360-degree view of the surroundings. The car also
boasts numerous power-operated features, such as doors that open electronically, allowing people to slide them back for easy entrance, and headlights that flip up 180 degrees from under the front grille. The Cyclone also has a device that would scan the road and let the driver know if there was a foreign object in its path. A 325-horsepower V-8 engine is nestled in the nose of the car, with the exhaust routed just ahead of the front wheels. Tickets for all events will be available on-site or may be purchased in advance at www.The EleganceAtHershey.com. Children age 15 and under may attend all events free of charge. statement, which is to provide meaningful and purposeful days for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Erdman will use the Violet Richardson Award to continue her education at Florida Southern College, where she will major in marketing. Hope Springs Farm has decided to use its portion of the award in a way that will benefit what the Soroptimist International of Harrisburg stands for. The farm will put the donation into its Sharing Hope Program, which entails Growers going into the community and serving organizations, in this case organizations that empower women. The farm will make contact with organizations for women’s and girls’ causes and find out what materials or supplies they need. The Growers will buy supplies and materials from the organizations’ wish lists and deliver them to the organizations. The program is called Sharing Hope because members of the public who donate may give to their charity of choice, and they also share their donation with Hope Springs Farm in the form of a full day of community volunteer work for Growers. For more information about the Sharing Hope Program, community members may visit www.hopespringsfarm.org.

on a family farm setting in Hershey. Participants, called “Growers,” range in age from 21 to 59 and have many different needs. Erdman is a senior at Lower Dauphin High School and has volunteered with Hope Springs Farm since September 2018. Her volunteer work includes writing press releases and blogs, managing social media accounts, and organizing fundraisers. Fundraisers she has promoted through social media and press releases have included the fall harvest barbecue, cookie sale, and pancake breakfast. This year’s new fundraisers that she helped plan and create were #GivingTuesday and the golf tournament outing. She worked on #GivingTuesday as an individual project using little supervision from the farm’s director, Jim Gainer. Erdman’s efforts promoting #GivingTuesday in the press and through social media, email and the website generated nearly $1,000 for the farm and its programs. When Erdman began volunteering, the farm’s Facebook page needed attention, and the organization did not have an Instagram account. Erdman worked to establish consistent social media accounts that all disseminated the same message as Hope Springs Farm’s mission

Local Cleanup Efforts Continue neighborhood blocks, greenways, waterways, and trails. According to Keep America Beautiful’s 2009 National Visible Litter Survey and Litter Cost Study, litter cleanup costs the U.S. more than an estimated $11.5 billion each year, with municipalities spending more than $790 million and counties spending $185 million each year. The Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful
adoption program helps mitigate the costs associated with cleaning up by encouraging local residents to take ownership of their communities. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful provides a sign recognizing the groups or individuals who have adopted the road or area and seeks the support of the local municipalities to provide the sign post, install the sign, and provide
trash disposal options as needed. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup of PA will run through Friday, May 31. Free bags, gloves, and vests are available for cleanup volunteers through a partnership with PennDOT and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. For more information about adopting a municipal road, park, neighborhood block, greenway, waterway, or trail, readers may visit www.keeppabeautiful.org and click on Keep It or contact Stephanie Larson at slarson@keeppabeautiful.org or 724-836-4121, ext. 104. Introducing BAGGED UPRIGHT Food Bank Receives Grant • 12 AMP Motor • On Board Tools • Metal Brushroll • HEPA Filter • Headlight • 30 Ft. Cord
CLASSIFIEDS
The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, headquartered in Harrisburg, has announced it has been awarded a $35,000 grant from Highmark Blue Shield to help fund its senior programs. Through its ElderShare program, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank provides low-income seniors with a fresh, nutritious box of food items every month. In 2018, the program helped more than 7,500 seniors struggling with hunger throughout the food bank’s 27county service area. The grant from the Highmark Blue Shield will help grow the food bank’s ElderShare program by increasing awareness of its senior programs and providing better analytics on the senior populations in Pennsylvania and the distance some travel to receive their boxes. It will also allow the food bank to continue working with direct service programs like the West Shore Meals on Wheels, which is now delivering boxes directly to seniors in
need so the seniors do not need to leave their homes or send a caretaker or proxy to pick up their box. The Highmark Blue Shield grant will also support funding for increased advocacy with local, state and federal officials. The food bank often reaches out to legislators encouraging them to fund programs that help fight hunger such as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) for seniors and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The food bank will also increase its outreach to seniors, helping eligible seniors access SNAP. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reduce hunger in 27 counties across Pennsylvania. For more information, readers may visit www.centralpafoodbank.org or www.face book.com/centralpafoodbank, call 717564-1700 or follow @centralpafb on Twitter and Instagram.
