Bugg Named Defensive Player Of The Year Lebanon Valley College (LVC) men’s basketball player Ricky Bugg of Palmyra has been named the 2018 LVC Judge John Walter Defensive Player of the Year. The award, given annually to LVC’s top defensive player, was inaugurated in 2005 to honor the late Judge John Walter, who was a longtime and dedicated supporter and public address announcer for the men’s basketball program. As a senior guard, Bugg ranked fourth on the team in both steals (20) and rebounds (3.9) and was third among LVC players with a 7.8 points-per-game scoring average.
Bugg’s shining moment came with LVC trailing 68-67 in the final moments of the 2018 MAC Commonwealth Championship Game. Fellow senior Caleb Barwin came away with an offensive rebound and found a wide-open Bugg on the wing. Bugg managed to make the biggest 3-pointer of his life to put LVC back in the lead with less than 10 seconds to play. LVC became conference champions thanks to that shot. Bugg, a graduate of Hershey High School, received his Bachelor of Science in business administration from LVC in May.

Organizer Elaine Jackson likes to describe the annual Victorian Tea at the Haldeman Mansion as an elegant affair. “It’s a really neat event,” praised Jackson. “Some people come from Lebanon and all over Lancaster, so it’s not just local.” The Victorian Tea will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, at the Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. A high tea will be served on beautiful china in the ballroom. The menu will include grape salad, chilled strawberry soup, ham and apricot sandwiches, cheese-nut sandwiches, chicken tarragon sandwiches, and scones with lemon curd, peach jam, and raspberry jam. All of the food will be prepared by members of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) and will be served with a variety of hot teas and iced mint tea. An assortment of homemade desserts will also be part of the meal, including Amish brownies, lemon bars, and cheesecake. Entertainment for the event will include live instrumental music. To make reservations for the limited-seating event, interested individuals may call Jackson at 717-426-3794 or 717-283-7740. The deadline to do so is Tuesday, July 10. There is a fee per person to attend the tea, with all proceeds benefiting the heating fund for the Haldeman Mansion. Jackson noted that once a heating system is installed in the historic building, the HMPS will be able to host events for the public year-round. Caring Cupboard Sets Lunch Program The Caring Cupboard, 131 N. Railroad St., Palmyra, is offering its third annual Summer Lunch Program, which will run through Friday, Aug. 24. One out of every five children in the Palmyra and AnnvilleCleona school districts receives free or reduced-cost lunches during the school year. The Caring Cupboard aims to support all families in these school districts that qualify for free or reducedcost lunches. The Summer Lunch Program provides five days’ worth of breakfast and lunch items every week to the families who need them. This year’s annual Summer Lunch Food Drive took place on June 9. Volunteers set up tables
at local grocery stores to collect donations, and donations were received from local businesses. Overall, the food drive collected more than 5,000 pounds of food and $800 in funds. Sydney Kwiatkowski, a local 8year-old, distributed flyers at three local developments, and Noah Ulrich, age 6, built, painted, and sold Nativity scene figurines to raise more than $850 for the Summer Lunch Program. The Caring Cupboard is a community food pantry located in Palmyra, serving roughly 135 families weekly. Support for this venture is garnered by donations of product and funds from churches, businesses, civic organizations, and individuals.

Jeffrey Clouser, director of music ministries at Palmyra Church of the Brethren (PCOB), has been published in the UCC Musicians’ Association Journal. In his three-page article, Clouser looks at what it means to lead a church’s song in a general congregational setting of any denomination. He then examines how the specific music ministry at PCOB embraces the task of being musician-stewards of God’s Word, and he discusses PCOB’s mission statement in this context. As part-time director of music ministries at PCOB, Clouser facilitates the choral, handbell, and praise team programs; participates in planning worship services; and organizes special musical events for the church. He also coordinates the Summer Melodies musical offerings for summer worship. He received his certification in Church Music through Virginia Wesleyan University and a Bachelor of Science in education from Millersville University. This summer, he is slated to begin his second year in the Master of Church Music program
at Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. He maintains memberships in Handbell Musicians of America, the Lancaster and Harrisburg Chapters of the AGO, ACDA, The Hymn Society, and UCC Musicians Association. He sings with the Elizabethtown College Community Choir and serves as festival coordinator for the Central Pennsylvania Handbell Festival.
