Book Inspires Career Choice When John Banaszek was a boy, he decided he wanted to become an architect after repeatedly borrowing Middletown Public Library’s copy of “Architecture: Residential Drawing and Design.” Today, Banaszek is an architect living in Gettysburg.
He recently visited Middletown because he wanted to own the book - the exact copy that inspired him years ago. Library director John Grayshaw gave Banaszek the book in exchange for another copy that Banaszek donated.
The Hershey History Center’s newly unveiled train layout depicts downtown Hershey and the surrounding countryside as it was in the 1920s.
History Center Unveils Model Railroad he Hershey History Center opened a new exhibit, “Return of the Chocolate Town Special,” on July 10. The exhibit will continue through December. This 1920s scene of rural life features three N-scale model trains that depict the Lebanon branch of the Reading Railroad and the significance of this transportation on the vitality and growth of the community. Models of historic Hershey buildings,
teers from Capital PenNScalers NTRAK, an N-scale modular model railroad group, along with the Hershey History Center and John Cassel, installed the train layout exhibit. For up-to-date event information, visit www.hersheyhistory.org or search for “Hershey History Center” on Facebook. Hershey History Center, 40 Northeast Drive, is the home of the Hershey-Derry Township Historical Society.
Library Director Bids Farewell Hershey Public Library director Laura O’Grady is heading to a new position in August, but she leaves behind a chapter full of accomplishments at Derry Township’s library. During her tenure, O’Grady led the renovation of the library, which resulted in a brand-new youth services wing and reading garden. The project was supported by the Hershey Library Endowment Trust, the Friends of Hershey Public Library, and the Keystone Grant for Public Library Facilities, guided by the library staff and community.

Library has incredible support within the community, so I believe the Friends of the Library and the Hershey Library Endowment Trust will continue to support library improvements and library events that make it one of the best libraries in the region,” said O’Grady. O’Grady thanks everyone for supporting the library, including the public, the Friends of the Library, the Hershey Library Endowment Trust, township administration, and, of course, the dedicated library staff. “My biggest thank you is to the staff, who made coming to work every day a total delight. Between the construction project and the pandemic, I feel like we’ve weathered some big storms together, and we couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help,” she concluded. “I speak for all board members when I say that Laura has done a wonderful job and she will be greatly missed. It has simply been a pleasure working with her, and we wish Laura and her family all the best,” said Derry Township Board of Supervisors chairman Chris Abruzzo. O’Grady’s next position will be as the vice president of advancement for York Day Nursery, where her 2-year-old son attends day care. The move allows her to stay closer to home and support an organization that is close to her heart.
The Hermitage Trio, from Russia, will be featured at the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna, on Sunday, Aug. 1, at 3 and 7:30 p.m. The group will perform Rachmaninoff ’s Second Elegiac Trio. The Hermitage Trio consists of violinist Misha Keylin, cellist Sergey Antonov, and pianist Ilya Kazantsev. Keylin has sold hundreds of thousands of copies of his works and has garnered numerous accolades and awards, including Critic’s Choice by the New York Times, Gramophone, and the Strad. Antonov is one of the youngest cellists ever awarded the gold medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Kazantsev has won many awards and honors, including the International Chopin Competition in Russia and the 2007 and 2008 World Piano Competitions. Now based in New York, the Hermitage Trio has been performing all over the United States. The trio’s debut album was nominated for three Grammy awards, including Best Chamber Music, Best Engineered Classical Album, and Producer of the Year for a Classical Album. Beyond the physical space in the library, O’Grady focused on removing barriers to library services. “We reexamined our collection, our website, and even our customer service model to make library services more welcoming and accessible to the whole community, not only our regular users,” said O’Grady. “My goal was to make the library an exciting and welcoming place for people to want to visit. With new programs, enticing displays, and a more visible staff in the community, we were able to accomplish that,” she added. During the pandemic, O’Grady and her team reimagined library services. They ramped up virtual reference services, issued digital library cards, and held virtual story time and virtual book groups. “We worked as a team to figure out how much of regular library services we could offer without in-person capabilities, and we came up with a lot of creative solutions,” she said. When it came time to reopen, O’Grady established lobby and curbside pickup services and a home delivery service, continued virtual programming, and followed all guidance on how to safely circulate library materials. She also led the library staff through difficult townshipwide cuts, which resulted in the elimination of several positions at the library. “It was tough, but our team did the best they could to work the public desks and reshelve the library returns to keep up with community demand,” she added. As for the future of the Hershey Public Library, O’Grady hopes that the next library director will continue to engage with the community to ensure that the library is providing top-tier services to all residents. “Hershey Public

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will hold its next monthly meeting online via Zoom on Thursday, Aug. 5, at 7 p.m. The Roundtable will welcome Col. Clarence E. “Bud” Anderson. Anderson was originally scheduled to speak at the June meeting, but had to postpone.
During World War II, Anderson served two combat tours as a fighter pilot escorting heavy bombers over Europe. He was chosen as one of the original flight leaders of the 357th Fighter Group, equipped with the new P-51 Mustang. From November 1943 through January 1945,
he flew 116 combat missions and in the process became the highest-scoring ace in the 363rd Fighter Squadron. He also earned the distinction of triple ace, meaning he shot down a total of at least 15 enemy aircraft during aerial combat. His plane, Old Crow, was never hit by enemy aircraft or forced to turn back for any reason. Anderson was decorated 25 times, was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame and has been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Following World War II, he served in the Air Force as a test pilot. He has written a
book about his exploits, “To Fly and Fight,” co-authored by Joseph P. Hamelin. Anderson turned 99 in January and is known as the highest-scoring living U.S. fighter ace and the only surviving U.S. triple ace. The Zoom meeting is open to the public, and no registration is required. To attend, visit www.central paww2roundtable.org. The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for World War II veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war.
