After 10 seasons of coaching Girls on the Run (GOTR) and Heart and Sole programs with Lancaster-Lebanon GOTR, Gayle Boltz, winner of the 2022 Shining Light Award, knows exactly what is most rewarding about volunteering, but she cannot talk about it without becoming emotional. “It’s when you see the girls just come to life (as a team),” explained Boltz, who said the transformation usually happens midseason after the girls complete their first practice 5K. “That’s what I call the magic … when they feel that strength within them.” Boltz began coaching at Annville Elementary School in the spring of 2017. She was soon working to start a team at Lebanon Catholic - a kindergarten through 12thgrade private school that she had attended. Her success inspired her to start a Heart and Sole program at Lebanon Catholic for middleschoolers in the spring of 2018. When a team could not be raised, Boltz coached at Lebanon Middle School, where she connected with Laurie Funk, now a board member with GOTR Lancaster and Lebanon. In the fall of 2018, Boltz returned to
GOTR at Lebanon Catholic, where she continued to coach until the spring of 2019, when she decided to transport girls who were interested in taking part in Heart and Sole to the Lebanon YMCA. “That’s when Laurie and I realized the power of connecting girls from different schools,” said Boltz. In the spring of 2020, a community team was born. Then, the COVID-19 shutdown occurred. Coaches reached out with activity packages to girls who had signed up from all over Lebanon County. Boltz noted that the YMCA has supported the program, but a lack of coaches has caused the GOTR program to struggle recently. Boltz was nominated by fellow coaches who mentioned her positive attitude and vision as well as her ability to connect with each girl and celebrate her individual achievements. When 2021 Shining Light winner Cara Scudner announced Boltz as the award winner at the May 25 banquet, she said, “(Boltz’s) infectious enthusiasm, strength, and leadership skills brought girls from different schools together into one team with a strong bond.” Each Shining Light Award winner receives a bracelet and
$500 to donate. Boltz chose to give to the Tour de Lebanon Valley bike ride, which raises funds for the Community Health Council of Lebanon County; the Lebanon Valley Conservancy; the Lebanon Valley Bicycle Coalition; the Lebanon Valley Mountain Bike Team, which is an interscholastic cycling team for young students; and the Lebanon Bicycle Recycle, which provides bikes for children in Lebanon. The GOTR fall season will be held from Monday, Sept. 12, through Monday, Nov.
21, with the GOTR 5K presented by OAL scheduled to be held at Millersville University on Saturday, Nov. 19. The 5K, which is open to the public, will begin at 8:30 a.m. GOTR is especially in need of volunteer coaches to help make the season possible for girls at each participating school. Readers who wish to learn more about GOTR Lancaster may visit w w w. g o t r l a n c a s t e r . o r g . Those who have questions about volunteering may email jwest@gotrlancaster.org.

A Fun Time At The Fair BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“We provide something for all ages - babies up through senior citizens,” said Sally Nolt, describing the Elizabethtown Fair. The 2022 Elizabethtown Fair will run from Monday, Aug. 22, through Saturday, Aug. 27, at the fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. “ We have a lot of new entertainment this year,” said Nolt, fair secretary. “Pentagon is back after an absence, and the LUV GODS are new this year.” Other new acts include Ironwood Drive Band, which performs bluegrass; The Sounds of Charlie Lee; and the Dave Kelly Band, which performs country music. New competitive exhibits this year include the return of Lego and K’Nex. Entries for both will only be accepted on Sunday, Aug. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. or on Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“Lions Club is bringing back bingo this year, and we’re excited about that,” Nolt said. “Kiwanis will be doing a story time with a bunny each morning at 10:30 a.m. in the petting zoo. This is for preschoolers, and they’ll also be giving away one book per family. They are doing that every day of the fair, even on Monday before the fair officially opens.” On Saturday, Honey Queen Khristyn Maurer will offer a story time and crafts for children at 10:30 a.m. in the petting zoo area. Also new this year will be an aquaponics display, entertainment from one-man sideshow Dave Darwin, country line dancing with DJ Chicken Nugget, country music from Corina Rose, a 2by-4 woodworking competition and an obstacle course for children. “We also have lots of good food,” Nolt noted. “We are a

free (admission) fair, and we have people who come every night just to eat dinner.” Popular food items include Harvey’s Main Street BBQ, pretzel sandwiches and Grange milkshakes. “We have a lot of local church and civic groups who sell food, and that is their main fundraiser for the year,” Nolt said. “The money they make gets funneled right back into the community.” The fair truly offers something for everyone, Nolt commented. “We are an agricultural fair, so we have lots of animals, and we also have great competitive exhibits in the church (next to the fairgrounds),” she stated. “Local businesses have the opportunity to showcase what they do in the exhibit area. There is so much to see and do.” For more information on the Elizabethtown Fair, including a complete schedule of events, visit www.etownfair.com.

The Youth Chorus is open to any singer entering third through eighth grades, and no auditions are required. Adult Chorus rehearses from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. This season, during rehearsals, masks will be optional for youths and optional with proof of vaccination for adults. The chorus seasons run from September to December and February to May, and singers may participate in one or both seasons. In anticipation of the regular rehearsal season beginning in September, the Youth Chorus will host a free, one-day camp on Monday, Aug. 15, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. To register for the camp or to learn more about LCCS, email managementlccs@gmail.com.
Additional rehearsals will be added one to two times a week based on actor availability. Rehearsals on Saturday, Oct. 8, and the week of Monday, Oct. 10, are mandatory. Those auditioning should come prepared with a 36bar song selection. The song choice should be reminiscent of the show, such as a song from another fairy tale musical or a piece by Rodgers and Hammerstein. An accompanist will be present for auditions. Auditioners are asked not to sing a cappella. Those auditioning should bring sheet music or a prerecorded karaoke track on a device that can play in the room. Short scenes from the show will be provided, and those auditioning may be asked to do a reading. Tryouts will also include learning and performing choreography, so participants should wear or bring appropriate shoes.
The audition form is available on the aforementioned website. Auditioners should include a recent photograph with the audition form and be prepared to list any possible conflicts, including dates and times. Available roles include Cinderella, Stepmother, two Stepsisters, Prince, Godmother, Herald, King, Queen, Four Sisters (Sloppy, Mean, Studious, and Kid), Three Girls, and ensemble members, such as Townspeople, Palace Staff, Mice/Horses, Footman, Coachman, and Ball Guests. Auditioners may wear a mask, but they may be asked to remove it once in the audition room. Shields are also acceptable. For those who are cast, there will be a registration fee, which will include a script, a show shirt, and photos of the production. Scholarships are available. For more information, visit the aforementioned website.

Lions Club Installs New Officers The Hershey Lions Club installed incoming officers at its June meeting. Steve Gallerizzo, outgoing club president, passed the club gavel to incoming club president John Mallonee. The new club year began on July 1. Since the club’s chartering in 1944, its members have supported a variety of projects, such as eyeglass collections and exams, food bank collections, tree planting, supporting youth sports, and providing scholarships. The club also partners with the Grace United
Methodist Church’s backpack project annually. Hershey Lions Club members fill about 20 officer positions within the club. Leadership opportunities still exist for interested members of the community. Lions clubs are a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs. Bank Of Bird-in-Hand To Open New Branches
INTRODUCING
Bank of Bird-in-Hand, a community-based, full-service bank with assets of approximately $977 million as of June 30, has announced that it will open two additional branch locations in Manheim, Lancaster County, and Schaefferstown, Lebanon County, by the end of 2022. The Manheim branch will be located at 118 Doe Run Road, just north of the downtown Manheim area. The bank anticipates that the branch will open in October. The Schaefferstown branch will be located at 2483 Stiegel Pike in the shopping complex shared with DutchWay Farm Market and Good’s Store. An anticipated opening is planned for November. The two locations will be the fifth and sixth brick-andmortar branches for Bank of Bird-in-Hand since its original launch in 2013, in addition to its locations in Birdin-Hand, Intercourse, Paradise and Ephrata. The two new locations will be the second and third branches to open this year. In March, Bank of Bird-inHand began servicing the Lykens Valley region through its Mobile Branch initiative. These “Gelt Buses,” named for the word meaning “money” in Pennsylvania Dutch, feature a walk-up teller window, an interior office area, and an ATM, and they provide banking services to 18 locations in Lancaster, Chester and Dauphin counties.
