II Corinthians 5:7 reads, “I will walk by faith even when I cannot see.” This Bible verse is very important to West Lampeter Township resident Megan Fraver. Until February 2020, Megan, a former teacher at Martin Meylin Middle School and Milton Hershey School, considered herself a normal, stay-at-home mom raising four kids. One day while grocery shopping in Willow

Street, Megan noticed that the vision in her left eye had become blurry, so the next day, she visited her optometrist. Megan was initially treated for a scratched cornea, but when her symptoms didn’t improve, her doctor re-examined her eyes and discovered that Megan’s optic nerve was swollen. An MRI ruled out a tumor, but her medical practitioners were unsure what was wrong with her. Megan was told it was rare

know it was legitimate?” Then one day, the clinic came up in Megan’s news feed on Facebook. It was a reshared post of a mother in Arkansas who wrote about her son’s experience after receiving treatment. Megan messaged the woman on Facebook, and one night, Megan and her husband, Matt, talked for two hours on the phone with the woman. “She encouraged us to go for it,” recalled Megan. “Her son is preparing for his second trip to Germany to help with his genetic disorder. Instead of seeing all black in both eyes, he now sees color!” In May 2021, Megan was approved to receive treatment at the Fedorov Restore Vision Clinic in Germany. After the Fravers discovered how much her trip and treatment would cost, her aunt started a GoFundMe, Megan designed T-shirts to sell, her dad fundraised with a produce stand, and Fashion Cents Consignment in Strasburg donated to Megan. Soon enough, with the help of friends, family, and the community, Megan raised enough money for her trip. Her treatment is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 23. “We keep praying and keep believing that this was God’s plan all along,” said Megan. “This could be my miracle.” Megan will likely need two treatments. for a person’s other eye to be affected, but seven months later, she felt a haze in her right eye. She called her neuro-optometrist and was scheduled for more tests. “I have been diagnosed with ischemic optic neuropathy from unknown causes,” said Megan. This condition causes sudden vision loss due to a blockage of blood flow to the optic nerve. “At first, we could not believe that God allowed this to happen,” she said. “But we’re allowed to wrestle and be angry as long as we don’t stay there and give up on our faith.” In her condition, Megan wondered how she would raise a 10-year-old, an 8-yearold, a 2-year-old, and a baby. “Over time, I came to accept blindness,” said Megan. “I feel as if God chose this to happen to me because He knew I could be an example of keeping faith during an incredibly difficult time.” Knowing there was no treatment available in the U.S. for her condition, Megan began to search for other options in foreign countries. That was how she came across the Fedorov Restore Vision Clinic in Germany. “Dr. Fedorov combines cuttingedge electrical stimulation paired with patented vision therapy to improve vision clarity and better visual fields,” stated Megan. “I was skeptical because how was I to

offered for children on both Friday and Saturday, and a DJ will provide music on Saturday. Activities will be held in the Seven Sorrows BVM Elementary School parking lot, as well as inside the school building. “Indoors is our very famous flea market in the gym downstairs,” noted Donna Huggins, who is cochair of the festival along with Judi Leo. This year’s flea market will feature approximately 49 tables filled with merchandise that has been donated by school and church families. Bingo will take place in the school cafeteria, and visitors can purchase ethnic foods to eat in or for takeout. Among the selections will be homemade lasagna rolls with meatballs, Polish stuffed cabbage with haluski, pierogies and baked goods. Farm Show milkshakes will be available on Aug. 21.

“ We also serve normal cookout food outside: hamburgers, hot dogs, Schmit’s sausage, fresh-cut fries and our popular funnel cakes that are 100% homemade and made to order,” said Huggins. Beer and wine will also be offered for sale at the festival for the first time. Also new this year is an appearance by the magic bus. “It’s a Volkswagen bus and they have props, and you can get your photo taken with the bus,” Huggins noted. There will also be an opportunity for people to win a handmade quilt, as well as gift baskets that have been assembled by parish members. “Each basket is worth at least $75, and there are a plethora of themes,” Huggins explained. “We will (sell) tickets on the night of the festival, and you put your ticket in front of the basket you want to win.” All proceeds from the festi-

val will benefit the parish. “It’s a fundraiser for the church, but it is also a community event,” Huggins said. “It’s a way for the community to socialize and have fun.” The festival was canceled in 2020, and this year’s event is being held later than usual to allow more time for the pandemic to ease. “We usually run it in June, but this year we moved it to August,” said Huggins. At least 200 volunteers from the parish family will contribute their time before, during and after the festival to make it a success. “Volunteers not only work at the event, but they help with setup and making the food,” said Huggins. “There are also so many volunteers over the course of months who help with the planning.” Seven Sorrows BVM Parish is located at 280 N. Race St., Middletown. For more information, visit www.ssbvm.org.

Rite Aid To Help Children’s Hospitals Rite Aid’s annual in-store customer fundraising campaign benefiting Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals will run through Saturday Aug. 28. All funds donated by customers will benefit 53 children’s hospitals providing lifesaving care and services for children in Rite Aid communities. This marks the 27th year for Rite Aid’s annual

campaign, with customer support helping the company and its public charity, The Rite Aid Foundation, to raise and donate more than $100 million overall to CMN Hospitals. During this year’s campaign, customers can donate during every in-store transaction at Rite Aid. In addition to patient services, charitable care and equip-

ment, donations help pioneer research that transforms how hospitals care for children not just in their youth, but throughout their lives. All donations made during Rite Aid’s campaign will stay local, supporting the children’s hospitals in customers’ communities. To learn more about CMN Hospitals, visit www.cmnhospitals.org.

The Hershey Lions Club recently recognized members with awards for their many years of dedicated service to the club and community. Honorees received recognition at a club meeting in June. David Crist received the Lion of the Year award. Crist is the Hershey Lions Club’s secretary. In addition to his outstanding service, loyalty, and devotion

to Lionism, he can often be counted upon for adding humor to his secretary reports. Receiving Melvin Jones Fellowships were Chuck Frank and Cliff Passuello, both of whom have long tenures with the Hershey Lions Club. Frank has also managed the club’s eyeglass collection effort, and Passuello has served as zone chair of Lions District 14T.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship award is the backbone of the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), the procurement of which is a contribution to humanity and to the legacy of the organization’s founder, Melvin Jones. The club also recognized Bart Callear with the Immediate Past President award. Callear served as club president

from 2018 to 2020. Current club president Steve Gallerizzo presented the award. The Hershey Lions Club hopes to resume in-person meetings in the near future. Lions clubs are groups of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs. For more information, visit www.hersheylions.org.

See You At The Fair BY CATHY MOLITORIS

It’s “An American Tradition.” That’s the theme for the 48th annual Elizabethtown Fair, which will begin on Monday, Aug. 23, and run through Saturday, Aug. 28. The theme sums up the fair perfectly, said Sally Nolt, fair secretary, who noted that the fair committee is ready to go after having to cancel last

year’s fair. “We’re back after a year off, and we’re back in full force,” she said. “You can see all of things you’d expect to see. We rebooked all of the entertainment from last year.” The fair will feature rides, games, food, agricultural exhibits, livestock shows, competitions and more. “We really have something for all ages, from the baby contest to the Senior Citizens’ Day and all ages in between,” she stated. Nolt cautioned that although the fair is back in full form, some vendors may be missing, and some rides may not operate. “The only issue we’ve run into so far this year is help. We have several stands who won’t be here this year because they just couldn’t find people to help them run them,” she explained. “We’ll also

have fewer rides for the kids for the same reason.” Help is also needed to run the horseshoe pitch contest, she said, or the event will be canceled. Still, the fair will feature traditions such as the Fair Queen competition and popular food, including Grange milkshakes. “The petting zoo is always fun,” Nolt remarked. “We also have the Rock N Roll Pet Store. That’s new this year. He’ll be doing activities for kids.” Nolt encouraged fairgoers to check out the exhibits located in the adjacent Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church. “We have really nice exhibits, and some people may not be aware that they are there,” she said, adding that the exhibits will feature flowers, vegetables, art, photography, crafts and baked goods. Nolt, who has been secretary for the fair for 37 years, said the event attracts people from across the state who

come for the fun. “We’re a free fair, and I think that’s a big draw,” she commented. “I often get people telling me, ‘Thank you’ because it’s free.” Planning for the fair happens year-round, she noted, adding that the community is invited to help with the fair or offer input at board meetings. “The fair provides an opportunity for the community to socialize,” she said. “It’s a chance for local businesses to showcase themselves. For a lot of churches and businesses that participate, this is their primary fundraiser. It’s an opportunity for kids to show their animals or auction them off. ... We just have wonderful community support for the fair.” The Elizabethtown Fair will run from 5 to 11 p.m. on Aug. 23 and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24, through Aug. 28. It will be held at the fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. For more information, visit www.etownfair.org.

Lancaster County has a rich geologic history, and Jeri Jones loves to highlight it. He will offer a geologic tour of the Haldeman Mansion property on Saturday, Aug. 21, beginning at 10 a.m. The tour will be held on the grounds of the mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. Jones, who operates Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove, said the program will feature stations set up around the mansion. “I will be talking about several different topics,” he stated. “I’ll talk about the building stone that’s on the mansion, which includes limestone that was quarried on the property.” He will include interactive demonstrations to help

attendees identify different types of rock used to build the 18th-century home. The mansion makes a perfect site for the program, said Jones, who has given multiple talks at the location. “The Haldeman Mansion itself is really neat in terms of geology. It’s located between the oldest rocks and the youngest rocks in Lancaster County,” he said. Jones will also discuss local geology around the mansion and will highlight the geologic history of the Susquehanna River, which the mansion overlooks. “The river has a fascinating history,” Jones remarked. His tour will also include information about Samuel Haldeman, who was born in the home in 1812. Haldeman

played a significant role in local geology, including discovering skolithos, a type of fossil, in the Chickies Rock area. “He had a vast knowledge of a lot of subjects,” Jones noted, including history and languages. “He’s someone you wish you could have met in person.” Jones will conclude his tour with an overall view of the geology of Lancaster County as a whole. Although the topic of his tour has a scientific focus, Jones emphasized that the program will appeal to a wide audience. “I’ll be delivering the information in a sense that you don’t have to have any

knowledge of geology to enjoy the program,” he explained. “I’ll speak in layman’s terms. It’s a good program for anyone with an interest in history, anyone who enjoys the outdoors or anyone who enjoys science.” Jones said the program will also be infused with his trademark sense of humor. “I’m famous, or maybe I should say infamous, for my jokes,” he stated. “I want to make it a fun program for everyone.” For more information or to register for the program, call Elaine Jackson at 717-4263794 or email her at elainek jackson1936@comcast.net.

Nora Brown will bring her Southern bluegrass banjo playing and ballad singing to the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna, on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 7:30 p.m. The 15-year-old Brooklyn native’s performance will be presented in partnership with the Susquehanna Folk Music Society. At 3 p.m., Nora will perform a Gretna Music for Kids show geared toward youths. She will share her love of the banjo and talk about banjo and Appalachian music. The program will also include an audience sing-along to folk tunes and an opportunity

for youths to make their own Appalachian folk toy called a flipper dinger. Nora began learning music at the age of 6. Since then she has been featured in a TedTalk and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, and she was the subject of a documentary funded by the Tribeca Film Festival. In addition to playing solo, Nora plays with other bluegrass musicians and teaches banjo lessons. In 2019, at the age of 13, Nora released her first album, “Cinnamon Tree.” Tickets can be purchased at www.gretnamusic.org or by calling 717-361-1508.
