One of the club’s most rewarding programs is its therapeutic and adaptive skating class. “(These classes) are for anyone who has special needs or is recovering from an injury and is going through therapy,” Spittler said, noting that wheelchairs are permitted on the ice during the classes. “(This gives) the skater with special needs the experience of being on the ice and having the feeling that they are skating.”

She said that learning ice skating skills can actually begin off the ice. “You can do the floor (activities) first, which makes transitioning over to the ice easier,” she noted. “(The online classes) actually helped increase our off-ice classes for both hockey skating and figure skating - ballet, strength training and choreography.”

The club remained active, even during the pandemic, by offering online classes. “There are things they make for office training, like spin boards, where you can do spins on the floor,” Spittler explained. “You can practice spinning, posture and rotation. We did some strength training and ballet classes and some Pilates and yoga classes. We did everything over Zoom. And the classes were free or low-cost.”

and then classes start the following week,” said coach Melissa Spittler, the club’s Learn to Skate director. The six-week semester of classes will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning on Sept. 6 and 8, respectively. “We do Learn to Skate for all ages - anyone from age 2 through adult,” Spittler explained. “We skate at the Hersheypark Arena and the Giant Center, which is where Hershey Bears play.”

Spittler noted that the Hershey Figure Skating Club is one of the oldest figure skating clubs in the United States. In addition to offering lessons and clinics, the club hosts the Hershey Open Figure Skating Competition each August. “The club began at a rink called the Ice Palace - what is now the Chocolatier restaurant,” she said. “Milton Hershey was its first honorary member. He was a big hockey fan, which is how ice hockey came to be in this area.”

Although all classes are programs open to the public, attendees are encouraged to become club members. “Members get a discount on all the programs that we offer,” Spittler said, noting that the club currently has 190 members. “It also includes membership to U.S. Figure Skating.”

The showcase will be held at the Brick House Café, 60 N. Main St., Manheim, which recently underwent renovation and expanded to include an art gallery and tasting room for 2D Distillery on the second floor. Lindsey noted that the art event would not be possible without the support of the Brick House, which will be providing catered hors d’oeuvres for the opening reception, as well as 2D Distillery, which will provide tastings at that event. “The opening reception is bringing together three things people love - art, food and drinks,” Lindsey noted, emphasizing that the showcase is a collaborative effort between the three businesses. The reception will also feature music from a violinist and performances from Balance Dance. Lindsey encourages anyone with a passion for art to enter the showcase. “Art is so subjective, so people can enter anything they want that fits the theme,” she said. “My heart is for the showcase to be geared toward up-and-coming artists who don’t have the resources or contacts for a big gallery opening.” She noted that three pieces to be spotlighted in the window at the Brick House will be selected by herself, Brick House manager Christa Neville and 2D manager Joanie Lindsey’sKretzer.goalis to offer an art showcase every other month throughout the year in the Brick House gallery space. She’s starting with a soft opening of the concept in September and October. That showcase will feature a sunflower theme. “I just want to support artists and give people access to beautiful art,” Lindsey said. “I want the art showcase to be welcoming to everyone.” For more information on entering art in the “Interpretation of Time” showcase, missionspieces.Artistshncinspirationz@gmail.com.emailmayenteruptosixThedeadlineforsub-isSaturday,Oct.1. BY CATHY MOLITORIS As the owner of Creative Inspirationz Gallery in Manheim, Heather Lindsey believes in the power of art. She also believes in collaboration. She’ll bring the two together for the “Interpretation of Time” art showcase. Scheduled to open on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, the exhibit is currently accepting entries. The showcase is open to any medium of art, and Lindsey said the theme is also open for interpretation. “It’s about, ‘What does time mean to you?’” she stated. “Since it’s happening in January, that’s when people think about time - the new year, the beginning. I think also as we’ve gone through COVID, a lot of people have reevaluated what’s important to them, and that can be reflected in their art.”

The Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS), Central PA (CPA) Chapter, presented a check to the Children’s Miracle Network in the amount of $7,000 on July 26. The money was raised from the chapter’s 2022 golf outing at Regents’ Glen Country Club, located in York. The golf outing had the highest number of participants in the history of the event. Those who took part in the check presentation were SMPS CPA members Carl Rinkevich and Amber Knauss, Katie Anderson from the Children’s Miracle Network, SMPS CPA director-at-large and programs chair Christina McCullough and SMPS CPA membership chair Brooke Wenger. Participants had the opportunity to hear from Gannon “Bubba,” an 8-yearold boy, who shared his personal journey with the group. Gannon was delivered by emergency C-section on Dec. 11, 2013. When Gannon was born, he was 12 weeks premature and weighed only 13 ounces. Gannon was transferred to Penn State Children’s Hospital by pediatric ambulance for a tracheostomy. The doctors did not think he would survive, but he did, earning him the nickname “Warrior Gannon Jr.” After spending 225 days in the NICU, he was allowed to go home. Today, “Warrior Gannon Jr.” continues to defy the odds and is thriving. Children’s Miracle Network is an international nonprofit organization that has affiliations with 170 children’s hospitals. Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, a member of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, raises funds in 10 counties: Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, York, Adams, Franklin, Cumberland, Perry, Juniata and Mifflin. Since 1984, Children’s Miracle Network has raised more than $87 million for Penn State Health Children’s Hospital. SMPS represents a network of more than 7,000 marketing and business development professionals from architectural, engineering, construction and specialty consulting firms throughout the United States and Canada. For more information about SMPS Central PA, visit www.smpscentralpa.org.
