The Hershey Rotary Club will hold a fundraising reception and silent auction at Hershey Gardens, 170 Hotel Road, Hershey, on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. This event will benefit Hershey Rotary’s community support programs. The reception will include hors d’oeuvres, live musical entertainment, and more. The silent auction will offer one-of-a-kind items and other unique opportunities for bidding. All of the net proceeds from the auction and reception will be used for charitable purposes. Organizations supported in recent years include Hershey Food Bank, Ronald

McDonald House, Mohler Center, Hershey Volunteer Fire Company, Love INC, Hershey Area Playhouse, Hershey Community Chorus, Hershey Historical Society, Hershey Public Library, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and Hershey Symphony. Broadcast Of Patriot Day Concert Set On Sept. 11, 2002, the community gathered for the first Patriot Day Concert hosted by the Lebanon Valley Chamber and performed by the Lebanon Community Concert Band. The purpose was to unite the community, honor first responders, and remember the patriotism that brought the nation together to recover from the 9/11 tragedy the previous year. This year would have marked the 20th Patriot Day Concert; however, due to a number of COVID-related

barriers, a live concert will not be held. Instead, there will be a broadcast of “best of” music recorded during previous Patriot Day Concerts, including patriotic music and vocal performances. The band is directed by Timothy Erdman. The public is invited to listen to the concert on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on WiLBuR 1270. It may also be streamed at http://player .listenlive.co/65221. An audio recording of the concert will be available online after Sept. 11, as well.

Arts Festival from pg 1 In addition, students in kindergarten through 12th grade in the Lower Dauphin School District will display their winning art at the festival from the school’s annual youth art contest. Categories include painting, pastels, graphics, mixed media, sculpture and pottery. Each year, a local artist is chosen to paint the image for the Hummelstown Arts Festival poster. This year’s artist is Barbara James of Hershey. The limited-edition posters will be available for sale at the event. According to Hollinger, the festival began in the early 1980s when

two Hummelstown sisters brainstormed how to promote the businesses in Hummelstown. “They formed a committee and decided to have vendors, food and entertainment,” she noted. “They chose the second Saturday after Labor Day to hold a festival. These are the same traditions the arts festival follows today.” For more information, email HummArtsFest@comcast.net or visit www.facebook.com/Hummelstown ArtsFestival. Dogs are not permitted at the festival, and people riding skateboards and bicycles will be prohibited.

back of the church. This year, the first meeting of the group will take place on Thursday, Sept. 16. Participants do not have to be members of the church to attend. “This is for anybody in the community; everyone is welcome,” said church member Mary Clouser, coordinator. The program begins at 11:30 a.m. with a short devotion. Attendees then enjoy a homemade meal prepared by Clouser with assistance from church volunteers. “We serve the meal cafeteria style; we put the food on the plate,” Clouser explained. “I usually get there around 7 in the morning, and we cook in the kitchen. Everything is fresh.” She noted that meals are served at the table for those unable to go through the food line. On Sept. 16, the meal will include sweet and sour ham loaf balls, cheesy potatoes, five-bean salad, bread, beverages and dessert. “It’s a nice meal. We always have meat, a starch, a vegetable and homemade dessert,” said Clouser, noting that the dessert generally includes her homemade pies. The entertainment portion of the program begins between 12:30 and 12:45 p.m. For September, Jimmy Jet and the Sky Pilots will sing the oldies.

Clouser noted that the acts are geared toward the over-50 crowd. “It’s mostly the oldies, and we have comedians. It’s fun stuff,” she said, noting that her husband, Don, helps line up the entertainment. Other church volunteers also provide assistance. “I have nine to 10 (people) helping with the Seniors Alive program. Some cook, some set up and some clean up,” she said. Seniors Alive is free to attend, but donations are accepted to help finance the cost of the food and entertainment. Donations are also accepted for the Middletown Food Bank. “It’s very nice, and the seniors really enjoy it,” Clouser added. “It’s a nice outing for them, and they get a homecooked meal.” After the Sept. 16 meeting, the following entertainment will be featured: Oct. 21, John Messic, pianist; Nov. 18, Sandy Heisey, who plays the piano and sings oldies; and Dec. 16, One Man Band (Lee Moyer) playing and singing oldies. For more information about Seniors Alive, call the church office at 717-944-9608. More information about the church is available at www.middletowncog.org or www.facebook.com/middletowncog.
