Rotary Club Presents Award The Rotary Club of Hershey recently presented the 2018 Packy Award to Richard Hann for his dedication to the organization. Hann has served the Hershey Rotary Club for many years, serving on the auction committee and on the board in all leadership roles, including president in 1980. He later served as program chair and then as club service administration chair for several years. Hann is an integral part of the International and District Service lane as the Youth Exchange Outbound coordinator.
The Packy Award was established in 2004 to honor Hershey Rotary member Purnell “Packy” Payne, who exemplified the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.” Each year, the award is presented to a Rotarian who displays service above self in his or her contributions and dedication to the Hershey Rotary Club and Rotary International through volunteer public service, community outreach, and philanthropic activities. For more information about the Hershey Rotary Club, readers may visit www.Hershey Rotary.org.

The Caring Cupboard, located on North Railroad Street in Palmyra, earned runner-up honors for the Agency Partner Award from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB). Each year, the CPFB hosts its Agency Appreciation Conference. This year’s event was held on Aug. 24. More than 900 agencies within 27 counties partner with the CPFB, including
The Caring Cupboard. The Caring Cupboard serves more than 420 families in the Palmyra and Annville-Cleona school districts. The organization averages roughly 150 families every week. The food pantry relies heavily on the help of volunteers and donors. To donate or volunteer at The Caring Cupboard, readers may visit www.caringcupboard.org or call 717-838-9493.
The annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22. Clark Witman (left) takes bids for an item at a previous auction. The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and
internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana to a tornado in Campbelltown. The petting zoo, children’s games, bake sale, and class basket giveaway drawings will begin at 9 a.m. Food trucks will open at 10 a.m. and will offer items such as pizza and frozen yogurt. Community organizations like Hershey Volunteer Fire Company, Derry Township Police, and Life Lion Ambulance will also be on-site. The PTO will also host an online silent auction at www.LaneRyanAuctions.com. Bidding opened on Sept. 17. All lots will be on display at the Country Fair beginning at 9 a.m. Bidding will end at 1 p.m. Winners may pick up their items at the fair between 3 and 4:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium or the following week from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the school office. The event is the primary fundraiser for the Conewago PTO. Thanks to the previous success of the fair, the PTO has been able to eliminate student sales-based fundraisers. Money raised through the fair is used to support school assemblies, field trips, and projects like the school book closet. For more information, readers may contact the school at 717-367-7233.

Thomas will broadcast her radio show live from the farm from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for children under age 12. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the reconstruction of the barn, which was destroyed in an overnight fire on April 23. The fire also took the lives of the Hope Springs mini horses, Bunny and Brownie, along with two rabbits and a couple dozen new chicks. On Sept. 4, the barn was rebuilt by local builders. Donations are necessary to cover the cost of the new barn. The rest of the proceeds will go toward the farm program for all growers. The farm program includes community activities, animal therapy programs, gardening therapy programs, and cooking and crafting therapy programs. To support the Hope Springs Farm, readers may attend the Harvest Celebration Barbecue or visit www.HopeSpringsFarm.org. Information is also available by calling 717298-1845. Opened in 2005 by Nina and Neil Rovner for their daughter Mimi and other adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities in the community, Hope Springs Farm provides a day program designed to allow growers to maximize their abilities. More than 50 adults are currently enrolled in the day program. These growers participate in volunteer programs in the community, such as Meals on Wheels, and visit nursing homes. On the farm, they feed and clean the animals, plant and water gardens, make crafts, take classes, and harvest flowers and vegetables.

Bell Choir Receives Donation The Central Pennsylvania Handbell Festival (CPAHF) presented a $500 check to the Forever Friends Bell Choir on Aug. 20 to provide financial assistance for its bell ministry. The funds were raised at the March 10 CPAHF held at Lebanon Area Evangelical Free Church in Jonestown. Forever Friends is a monthly outreach program held at Palmyra Grace Brethren Church that offers additional support to all individuals in the community, including those with intellectual disabilities, autism, or both who have difficulty attending a typical worship service and prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. Forever Friends is expanding the program to include an inclusive, mixed-ability handbell choir that will meet three times per month for music and fellowship. A local handbell musician and an occupational therapist are working together to increase the ease of playing handbells for people of all abilities. Participation will be
free. For more information about the group, readers may contact Betsy Cohick at 717-9261274 or email Palmyra Grace Brethren Church at secretary@palmyragrace.org. The bell choir currently meets on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at Palmyra Grace Brethren Church. Formerly known as the LancasterLebanon Handbell Festival, the CPAHF began as a handbell workshop in 1992 and was co-hosted by Palmyra Church of the Brethren and Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren. The next festival will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020, at Lebanon Area Evangelical Free Church in Jonestown under the direction of Raleigh Ringers director David Harris. The event is endorsed by Handbell Musicians of America Inc., dedicated to uniting people through the musical art of handbell and handchime ringing. For more information, readers may visit www.handbellmusicians.org.
