Walkers Raise Funds For American Heart Association Close to 2,000 walkers turned out at City Island in Harrisburg on Sept. 15 for the 2019 Capital Region Heart Walk. The event raised more than $577,000 for the American Heart Association as of Sept. 25. Among the participants was 4-year-old Henry Thomas, a congenital heart defect survivor who was chosen as an honorary Heart Hero to lead the walk. During opening ceremonies, his mother, Rachel Thomas, shared the story of discovering Henry’s heart defect during a routine check-up when he was 2 years old. What nurses first believed to be a heart murmur turned out to be a serious congenital heart defect called coarctation of the aorta, or a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Just a few months later, on Sept. 29, 2017, Henry underwent a complete surgical repair of his defect. The Heart Walk coincided closely with the two-year anniversary of his surgery. Since his surgery, he has become a healthy and active boy and received the title of big
brother. The Thomas family, including father Ryan and younger brother Wyatt, had the honor of leading the walkers from the starting line. Robb Hanrahan of CBS21 News and RJ Harris of WHP 580 hosted the Heart Walk opening festivities, which included health information and blood pressure checks, CPR demonstrations, children’s activities and healthy snacks. The event culminated with a 1-mile walk around City Island or a 3-mile walk that continued to Front Street in Harrisburg. TE Connectivity, Rite Aid and UPMC Pinnacle took home honors as the top company teams. Alicia Luciani of the Capital BlueCross team was the top fundraising individual walker. Phil Guarneschelli, president and CEO of UPMC Pinnacle, was the top corporate executive fundraiser. UPMC Pinnacle was the winner of the Heart Walk Healthcare Cup, a friendly challenge among local health systems UPMC Pinnacle, Penn State Health and Geisinger Holy Spirit to raise the most money for the Heart Walk. For the 13th year, Bath Fitter partnered with the American Cancer Society (ACS) in October by serving as the presenting sponsor for the ACS Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) Walk on City Island, which is one of the largest MSABC walks in the country. The event was held in Harrisburg on Oct. 19. Bath Fitter also sponsors and participates in 19 other MSABC walks throughout other communities in support of breast cancer research and to provide support for patients and survivors. The annual MSABC walks serve to raise funds for research and critical services to patients, to increase awareness of breast cancer in the community, and as an opportunity to celebrate survivors and honor those lost to breast cancer. In addition to serving as the presenting sponsor for the Harrisburg-area MSABC walk, Bath Fitter often provides many free items to walk participants, such as bottled water, bracelets, and insulated tote bags. The company also committed to donating a portion of all October sales to the ACS. Last year, Bath Fitter raised more than $47,000 for the ACS through this program. The company’s 2019 donation campaign total will be announced later this year. Among the other sponsors for the MSABC event were Kitchen Saver of Harrisburg and Homespire Windows and Doors of Harrisburg, which co-sponsor the Big Pink Chair, a giant inflatable chair where walk participants may take a break or pose for photos. Both Kitchen Saver and Homespire also committed to donating a portion of all October sales to the ACS. Last year through this program, Kitchen Saver donated more than $5,000 to the ACS and Homespire donated roughly $3,000 to ACS. The companies’ 2019 donation totals will be announced later this year.
